There is no difference from functionality point of view.
But when the new versions of SAP comes into picture certain objects(fun modules,tables,fields etc) will become Obsolete and the new Objects will come into picture in the place of Obsolete Fun modules and other objects
So GUI_Upload and GUI_DOWNLOAD are the newversion of function modules which are the replacement for the UPLOAD and DOWNLOAD fun modules
So we should use the New one.
So it depends on the SAP Version on which you are working
If you are still working in the Older versions of SAP like 4.0 like thing then you can use the DOWNLOAD and UPLOAD.
But if you are working on the latest versions like ECC5.0 and ECC6.0 you have to use GUI_download and GUI_UPLOAD fun modules only

    UPLOAD fm is the old function module which is now obsolete. From 4.6C onwards SAP has delivered new FM's for uploading and that is GUI_UPLOAD.
    the diff is  UPLOAD pops up a box during runtime to accept the file path the GUI_UPLOAD does not pop up any box during runtime instead takes the path as a paramter.

    WS_UPLOAD and WS_DOWNLOAD, the function modules used until now are not part of the standard set of ABAP commands. They are used to display the file interface on the presentation server. WS_UPLOAD and WS_DOWNLOAD are not compatible with USs and have been replaced by GUI_UPLOAD and GUI_DOWNLOAD.

    SAP 4.72 onwards system is unicode compliant.
    THE WS_DOWNLOAD and WS_UPLOAD function modules are not compatible for unicode systems.
    So it is replaced with this new FM GUI_UPLOAD.
    There is a SAP note on this issue  Note 992677 - FMs WS_DOWNLOAD & WS_UPLOAD incompatible for unicode systems

    The difference between programming in Unicode or not Unicode is that you should consider some adjustments to make on the Program "Z" to comply with the judgments Unicode Standard.
    In the past, developments in SAP using multiple systems to encode the characters of different alphabets. For example: ASCII, EBCDI, or double-byte code pages.
    These coding systems mostly use 1 byte per character, which can encode up to 256 characters. However, other alphabets such as Japanese or Chinese use a larger number of characters in their alphabets. That's why the system using double-byte code page, which uses 2 bytes per character.
    In order to unify the different alphabets, it was decided to implement a single coding system that uses 2 bytes per character regardless of what language is concerned. That system is called Unicode.
    Unicode is also the official way to implement ISO/IEC 10646 and is supported in many operating systems and all modern browsers.
    The way of verifying whether a program was adjusted or not, is through the execution of the UCCHECK transaction. Additionally, you can check by controlling syntax (making sure that this asset verification check Unicode).

  • Download and upload of file to server dir (AL11)

    Hello,
    I have a custom program that is downloading files from application server directory (they are like templates) to user local pc. User is then modifying such files and finally upload them in another AS directory.
    The program is currently making use of FM's C13Z_FILE_DOWNLOAD_BINARY and  C13Z_FILE_UPLOAD_BINARY.
    There was no problem until hot packages have been implemented: now such FM's are returning an error saying:
    Internal program error; (YDOWNLOAD SAPLC13Z 0 C13Z_RAWDATA_WRITE)
    When in debug, it appears that the FM C13Z_RAWDATA_WRITE (called by the above mentioned FM's) is checking the calling program (sy-cprog) and if this latter is not within a list of standard programs (hardcoded), then the error is thrown.
    My question is: Is there another way to download and upload files without such error? Could you please share the code?
