Differences between Article Hierarchy and Merchandise Category

Hai Gurus,
Can somebody distinguish the differences between the Article Hierarchy and Merchandise Categotry? Which one is better to use? Both seems to have a similiar functionality but why SAP had proposed Article hierarchy and Merchandise category seperately?

Hi Voyeurhuman,
if you have not typed correctly, then you might be interested to know the difference between Articel hierarchy & Merchandise hierarchy.
pls go thru following:
Article Hierarchy
.grouping of articles with sales oriented approach
.customer oriented structure
.Consumer decision Tree
.maximum eight levels
.planning hierarchy used for sales plannng in MAP
.multiple no. of  Article hierarchies at a time with schedule article hierarchy i.e. with time dependent functionality
.can be define for distrubution chain dependent
.can be transported to BI
.data can be imported as wellas exported using interfaces
.sub structure of one can be copied from one to another
.Major characteristics-->responsibility, reference assignment, price point group assignmnet, merchandise distributio(fashion/basic), role,strategy/
.multiple assignment of articles is not possible within same category
.it can be assigned to department store and shops with pre-requisite of multiple assignment checked
Merchandise Hierarchy
.its a purchase oriented approach
.it classify and structure all aspects of the merchandise
.purchaser decision tree
.An unlimited number of hierarchy levels is possible
.terms are used in merchandise category hierarchies
     -Merchandise category hierarchy levels
     -Merchandise category hierarchies
     -Characteristics profiles
.All the elements in the merchandise category hierarchy are defined as classes(class 026)
Both Article & Merchandise Hierarchies are very much different. Both are meant for differnt purposes.

  • Difference between Material type and Item category

What is the difference between Material type and Item category?
We can differentiate different kind of materails according to material type then why do we have Item category which is also more or less on the same lines.
Both can be considered as a terminology in SAP to group similar kind of materials.
Please let me know the exact difference between the two?

    Dear Christino
We can list out so many differences.
When you create a material master record, the material type you choose determines:
    - Whether the material is intended for a specific purpose, for example, as a configurable material or process material
    - Whether the material number can be assigned internally or externally
    - The number range from which the material number is taken
    - Which screens appear and in what sequence
    - Which departmental data you may enter
    - What procurement type the material has; that is, whether it is manufactured in-house or procured externally, or both
Together with the plant, the material type determines the material's inventory management requirement; that is:
    - Whether changes in quantity are updated in the material master record
    - Whether changes in value are also updated in the stock accounts in financial accounting
In addition, the accounts affected by a material entering or leaving the warehouse depend on the material type.
-Most importantly, Users can be authorized to create materials of specific material types but not based on item category
    - Item category will define whether the material should be valuated for stock or it should be considered as non-stock
    - Pricing is carried out based on Item Category and not based on Material type

  • Difference between personal folder and personal category

    Hi All,
I am new to this site, I want to post my query. Is this a right place to post my queries? If it is wrong please guide me, where to post my query related to CMC.
My question is, What is the difference between personal folder and personal category in central management console (CMC)?
    Thanks and regards,

    HI
Item Category determines the processing of any Item/material that we enter in a sales order and in this way it also effects the procesing of any sales doc in which it is used.
Item Category Group is one of the component which along with the Sales Doc Type, The Item Usage and Higher Level Item Category decide about the Item Category in a sales doc.
Item category determination enables, the system proposes the corresponding item category for sales document type through item category group. t-code: VOV4
Fields in the item category determination:
Sales document type, item category group, item usage, and higher-level item category
Default item category, manual item category
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_47x200/helpdata/en/43/3bcfea0bff11d2956700a0c9306667/frameset.htm
    refer below for further details
Item category is for a particu;lar sales order item and it has integration with sales document type and material master.
In material master ,you must have seen the item category grp in basic data and sales area data.
That means your item category is assigned to the combination of sales document type and item category grp in the configuration.
Whenever you will create an order for a particular type and you will put your material then your item category will be determined automatically.
Configuration is done by spro---sd -sales-sales document item----assign item category

  • Difference between Standard Hierarchy and Alternate Hierarchy

    Hi
Can anyone explain the difference between Standard Heirarchy and Alternate Hierarchy in Controlling.
    Thanks in Advance,
    Deepthi.

<b>Standard Hierarchy:</b> It is a hierarchy of cost center groups / profit center groups in which all cost centers / profit centers are gathered together in a controlling area.
In order to create cost centers, you require a structure in master data maintenance to which you can assign cost centers. You create this CO structure, the standard hierarchy, when you create a controlling area. If this hierarchy is not present during controlling area maintenance, the system automatically creates the highest node there.
    <b>
Alternate Hierarchy:</b> The alternate hierarchy setting in the controlling area enables you to name up to two more alternative hierarchies (according to fiscal year), which can be used for the authorization check in the same way as the standard hierarchy (meaning, that inheritance logic is used). You can also deactivate the standard hierarchy as an authorization hierarchy, and use only the alternative hierarchy.

  • Business Content: Difference between Articles, Products and Material

    Hi experts,
what is exactly the difference between the repositories of the business content for
    - Articles
    - Products and
    - Material?
In which business cases do I have to choose which repository? Maybe articles for retail, material for manufacturing, etc.?
When I am using business content repositories is there any kind of (customizing) data that is necessary in more than one repository (e.g. plants, units, etc.) so that it has to be maintained twice in two different repositories?
Thanks for your answers. Of course helpful answers will be rewarded.
    BR, bd

    Hi,
First of all please make your question clear.
On the other hand I don't think you required two different kind
of repositories for a particular master data object(AS Material)
in terms of activation of standerd business content.
Because there is no relevance if you are considering to make two different repositories with two different field of Material say
Unit, Plants..it is kind of reference data for a particular object(Material). and by making two different Repo. there will be no relavance otherwise you can make it.
    Hope it helps.

  • Differences between Position Hierarchy and Supervisory Hierarchy

    Hi All,
Can somebody tell me the pros and cons of using Position Hierarchy and Supervisory Hierrarchy .
    Regards,

If you use the Position hierarchy then you will have to go through the process of defining all of the positions / posts in your organisation and specifying all reporting lines in your organisation from top to bottom. You will then have the overhead of maintaining your positions and position hierarchy and keeping them in line with the business on a day to day basis.
If your organisation is fairly fluid, e.g. a project based organisation or an expanding organisation, these can be very significant overheads. Business re-organisation will create a large workload in creating new positions and migrating employees to them.
If you are in a fairly static organisation e.g. public sector then it may well be that the position structure is well documented and changes infrequently. In this case use of positions and position hierarchies is a simple data entry task and adds significant value.
The supervisor hierarchy is more flexible. It is simply a field held against the person record. However, there is very little validation on it so the you have to put manual processes in place to make sure the data is valid e.g. leavers are replaced and that no loops are created.
I would recommend NOT using positions unless yours is a public sector implementation.

  • Difference between SERVICE HIERARCHY and LIMIT PO's in SRM

    Hi all,
    SRM 5.0 SP12,ECS.
Can anyone explain when do we need to create SERVICE HIERARCHY PO's and LIMIT PO's in SRM?
    Thanks.

    Hi Rajan ,
    Thanks for teh reply.
I'm but confused with your answer....
We have SRM 5 implemented at our place and I see that service carts  created in the system using the link "ORDER" when converted to PO's in Sourcing create Purchase orders with HIERARCHY structure i.e. 1 header and 1 item(with the actual service line) but when they are replicated to ECC,we have done an enheancement to create LIMIT PO's for service orders.
Hence I wanted to know when do we need to create SERVICE HIRERACHY based PO's in SRM and when we need to create LIMIT PO's directly in SRM?
Also I understand that in SRM,for limit PO's,when the PO item is deleted in PROCESS PO trasnctions, the items are not returned back to sourcing. We dont want this to happen for all types of PO's(both material and Service). We want that when a PO item is deleted, the item should return back to sourcing.
But other then above functionality, what are the advantages of creating SERVICE based HIERARHCY PO's v/s LIMIT PO's in SRM?
    Please advise.
Any inputs from Experts on this forum will be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

Oracle does not support REPEATABLE READ transaction isolation level. It only supports SERIALIZABLE, READ COMMITED and READ ONLY isolation levels.
    The default is READ COMMITED.
While the READ COMMITED can access all the committed data till the point of execution in transaction, READ SERIALIZABLE can access committed data till the point of start of transaction.
Another difference between two with respect to ROW LEVEL LOCKING is
Both read committed and serializable transactions use row-level locking, and both will wait if they try to change a row updated by an uncommitted concurrent transaction. The second transaction that tries to update a given row waits for the other transaction to commit or roll back and release its lock. If that other transaction rolls back, the waiting transaction, regardless of its isolation mode, can proceed to change the previously locked row as if the other transaction had not existed.
However, if the other blocking transaction commits and releases its locks, a read committed transaction proceeds with its intended update. A serializable transaction, however, fails with the error "Cannot serialize access", because the other transaction has committed a change that was made since the serializable transaction began.
Read following for clearing your concepts on transaction isolation levels and locking mechanisms

  • Difference between Free goods and BOM (ERLA)

    Hi,
Could any body throw some light on the Difference between Free goods and BOM(ERLA) to clarify my weired thought.
AS of what i know is Free goods is 1:1 ratio.
The main item will be prices and sub item will be free .
Than same thing is also With BOM (ERLA)
    Regards,
    Venksys

    Hi Venksys
Please note as given below :
Free Goods : This function allows you to offer your customers a product free of charge in the form of free goods when a certain quantity of products is ordered. Free goods is a kind of quantity discount, and is granted in the form of a goods delivery that is free of charge when a certain quantity is purchased. There are Two types of free goods :
1.Inclusive : The customer only pays for part of the goods ordered. The rest of the products are provided at no extra cost. For example, a customer orders  for 3 bottels but pays for 2 bottels  and 1 is supplied free .
2.Exclusive - The customer pays for the goods ordered, and also receives additional products for free. The materials delivered as free goods will not be the same as that of ordered onces. For examples customer orders 5 bottels , but will receive 1 Bottle opener free.
BOM : It consists  of 2 or more items combined and sold as an package : Example : Combination of 1 Tooth paste  + 1 tooth brush  packed as BOM.
The Higher level Material ( BOM) is  not relevant for pricing but relevant for picking : The tooth paste and brush is relevant for pricing  and also can be sold independently : The Item cat group of the Header BOM material will be ERLA  and for Tooth paste and brush material the Item category group will have TAN.
For more details , please refer to the  link below:

  • AppID during application update and Difference between app id and product id

    Hi
I understand once a app is in store it has a associated Appid. How does this differs from the product id?
During each app update does the product id's should be same?
or during the store certification process will the appid and the product ids be mapped?
How does the product id and App id differ if this is not the case?
Can you provide some article which actually explains what is the difference between XAP uploaded and xap after certification?
    Regards
    Varun
Varun Ravindranath Please 'Mark as Answer' if my post answers your question and 'Vote as Helpful' if it helps you.

    Hi
In that case the dev account from which the update is done will have the unique id or  appid  and the appid or the product id mapping will be always done by the store certification process.
I'm not clear on this part whether the developer who does the update of the app should update the id or the process which does the certification of the app as an update will update automatically do it?.
