Differences:  Data warehouse/BI/BW/SAP/NetWeaver

Hello Experts,
Can you help me strike the differences in the following:
An agent said to describe to him my experience in each of the following:
Data warehouse skills
Business Intelligence skills
BW skills
and SAP skills
I will appreciate knowing the details of each. What actually is expected under each?
(what about NetWeaver, I hear about it often these days)
Thanks.

Hi Amanda,
I give you a short description of each:
Data Warehouse: focused on data storage for large volumes. Is the one responsible for creating cubes and star schemas.
Business Intelligence: focused on information analysis. It mixes datawarehouse knowledge with business knowledge.
BW: knowledge of SAP BW product.
SAP: Knowledge of SAP platform.
NetWeaver: its the "new" SAP platform for development. its a platform, concept, etc that includes technology solutions for modern businesses.
Hope this helps.
Regards,
Diego

  • Core data warehouse-component in SAP BW

    Hi experts,
a typical data warehouse reference architecture (as described in many books) basically consists of a core data warehouse, an ods and data marts.
As far as I understood in SAP BW an ODS object acts as a storage location for consolidated and cleaned-up transaction data (transaction data or master data, for example) on the document (atomic) level. This data is not stored permanently but overritten as soon as changes are applied to data in the operational systems.
But where in SAP BW is a component like a core data warehouse that stores consolidated and cleaned-up transaction data on atomic level permanently without overwriting it????
    Thanx
    Axel

    hi Dinesh
thanx for the PDF! Does it refer to SAP BW 3.5 or NW2004?
Do I get it right that in SAP BW version 3.5 there is no "core data warehouse" that provides persistent historic data on a granular level but only ODS-Objects that can only provide the latest integrated but NOT HISTORIC data on a granular level?
And do they actually introduce a new component in NW2004 (referring to page 20 in PDF) or only suggest a differnt way of modelling a set of ODS-Objects and InfoCubes (that have already existed in version 3.5) with granular data to a "Data Warehouse Layer"?
    Thanx
    Axel

  • Cannot find Master Data folder in the SAP Netweaver

    Hello,
I need to create Open Catalog Interface (OCI) punch out system for our web shop. In order to test it I need SRM server that can call our web shop. I have downloaded this SRM software and installed it in my local computer:
    ABAP_Trial_7_02_SP11_Win_64_bit_Version_with_Gateway_2_0_SP04
But I cannot see the Master Data folder inside the SAP Easy Access. Does that mean SAP SRM server has not been installed on my computer? If yes, how can I install it? Can i have it for free or I should pay for it?
    Best regards,
    Kevin

I'm having the same problem. As far as I know the only version of ODAC that I have installed is 11.2.0.3. What version did you ultimately install?
    What I have:
    - Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate
    - .Net framework 4
    - Entity Framework 4
    - 64 Bit ODAC 11.2.0.3
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

  • Difference between Data warehouse BO and SAP BO

    Dear All,
can anyone let me know the difference b/n data warehosue Business Objects and SAP Business Objects.....and aslo can u suggest which is the better future among these two tools....
explaining in detailed view is highly appreciable!
    Thanks & Regards,

    Hello,
in the SAP BusinessObjects portfolio there is no solution for a DWH. A DWH is a DataStore based on a Database technology like Oracle. SAP BusinessObjects doesnt have its own Database. SAP BusinessObjects Tools support loads of Databases like Oracle, DB2, MS SQL etc.
What the SAP BusinessObjects portfolio has is an ETL tool to create a DWH - called "DataServices". Also there is a tool for creating a virtual DWH - called "Data Federator"
SAP has its own Datastore for a DWH - called "SAP Business Warehouse" (SAP BW)
    Hope this helps.

  • Data Volume handling in SAP Netweaver Mobile 7.1

    Hi,
I wanted to know what is the kind of data volume a device which has netweaver mobile can handle. Assuming we have Intermec cn 50 device what could be threshold value for the data that the device hold after it has consumed memory for the Mobile Client to work.
I know this is a very abstract or not a to the point question but this is something what Stakeholders expect when they are plannign to mobilize any of the business processes.
    Thanks.
    Srikumar V

    Hi Ankur,
you can also directly navigate to the mobile administrator using the web browser. The url is as follows:
    http://host:port/sap/bc/webdynpro/sap/sdoe_administration?sap-language=EN
Host and port you have to adjust to your settings. These are the same settings you are using during synchronization on a client device.

  • Can SAP BI (BW) stand alone as a data warehouse for Non-SAP Source Systems.

I recognize that the answer to this question depends on the version of SAP BW we are discussing. My question is one being posed to determine how SAP BW fits in with the BI world and the other tools available.
    - Can a company implement SAP BI without also having the SAP ERS applications?
    - If so, will SAP BI effectively support 3rd party source systems and what is needed to make it effective (NetWeaver XI, NetWeaver 2004s)?
    Thanks for your expertise.
    Denny

    hi dear,
clearly the most valuable input given by BW is a native integration with all SAP world...
well, you can manage a BW without having a SAP ERP as source system:

    Hope it helps!

  • How long do you keep data in PSA ? (SAP NetWeaver BI 7.0)

    Hello gurus,
According to your expertise, do you consider that PSA must keep data for a long time ? Or should it be set to empty after a short time (one month for instance).
If we consider that PSA must not keep data for a long time, how do you let your clients access old data (for instance, results of 2005 that are accessed rarely) ? Do you create another cube with old data, compressed, with aggregates ...
I have investigating archiving, but this option does not fit because we want to be able to access the data at any time, even very rarely..
Any feedback on the topic is appreciated.
    Best regards,
    Vanina

    Hi Vanina,
How long you save your PSA is depending on the load frequency and the way you load:
    e.g.
    - Daily full load: one week will be enough
    - Daily delta: depending on the possibilities to repair/ to run a new init. If a repair is difficult or a init takes a lot of time (billions of records) keep your PSA for  90 days.
Also the time the business needs to "discover" errors is important. If they run monthly reports, don't delete the PSA on weekly basis.
If you load data from flat files or other sources that cannot be easily recovered: save PSA "forever".
Cubes with a lot of data can be split into "Yearly" cubes. Run reports with only recent data direct on the cube. reports with this and last year on a multi-cube. (you can even make another multicube for all the years. Compress cubes once they are not filled anymore.
Yearly cubes can also partitioned (menu --> extra's --> DB performance --> partitioning)
    Hope this helps.

  • XMII query against a SAP NetWeaver database

    Hi all,
I have set up a data server for a SAP NetWeaver MSSQL database (DX1 on SAPSRV03) for SAP Web AS 6.40. The status of this data source shows OK. I try to create a new query template. In the SQL Query details, I can see the list of the tables and the list of the columns from a selected table. However, the test result always shows an error: “A SQL Error has occurred on query, [SAPSRV03\DX1]Invalid object name 'TMP_PRD_LINES'” It does not work for any table from that database, so it seems that the error has nothing to do with the table name.
If I change the database name of that data server to something else, like pubs or Northwind, on the same SQL server, the query works well with any table.
I wonder whether there is any special parameters that I need to set up so that I can query against a NetWeaver database.
I’ll appreciate any advice on this problem!
    Best regards,
    Hart

    Hart,
We are able to query a Netweaver DB, but we needed to include a schema.
Your query to the TMP_PRD_LINES table should look like the following:
    Select * from SAPDX1DB.TMP_PRD_LINES
Working with you through support I know that this worked for you - I am just wanted to post the answer for everyone to see.
    Thanks,

  • Database and Data Warehouse, SAP BW Vs Oracle

    Hello Gurus,
I would like to know the differences between Database and Data Warehouse.
Oracle acts as a Database for SAP BW. I understand it this way, that all the data is stored in Oracle and BW tell the Database how to store, with all the links etc.
Please tell me whether I am correct.
It’s my pleasure to award points,
    Thanks and best wishes,
    i-bi

    hi,
A data warehouse is, primarily, a record of an enterprise's past transactional and operational information, stored in a database designed to favour efficient data analysis and reporting (especially OLAP). Data warehousing is not meant for current, "live" data.
A database is a collection of information stored in a computer in a systematic way, such that a computer program can consult it to answer questions. The software used to manage and query a database is known as a database management system (DBMS). The properties of database systems are studied in information science.

  • Difference between SAP NetWeaver Gateway 2.0 and SAP NetWeaver Gateway productivity accelerator for Microsoft

    Hi Experts ,
Can anyone tell me the difference between SAP NetWeaver Gateway 2.0 and SAP NetWeaver Gateway productivity accelerator for Microsoft ?
    Best Regards,
    SK

SAP  Netweaver Gateway 2.0 is a product for Exposing ERP data as OData for external consumption which is independent of any Microsoft product. Using this you can model OData services and Expose them for light weight consumption. You can use this in use cases where  you just want to consume the OData in some client or so, and you do not want any kind of accelerators to help you in development or in your integration.
GWPAM is an interoperability framework from SAP that leverages SAP NetWeaver Gateway and Microsoft technologies enabling customers and partners to easily and quickly compose solutions that consume and extend SAP throughout Microsoft technologies for on premise and on demand deployment. With GWPAM you get components like
GWPAM Visual Studio Add-On,GWPAM Template,GWPAM Project,GWPAM Outlook Add-In which are very much Microsoft specific.

  • Difference between SAP ECC IDES 6.0 and SAP NetWeaver?

    Hello everyone!
I am a bit confused since I am also new to SAP world, so I would to ask you, we have a SAP IDES ECC 6.0 in our server here to our company, I was trying to see a little of SAPUI5 and in a tutorial a guy was using SAP NetWeaver Visual Composer.
1- But, what's the difference between the SAP IDES ECC 6.0 and SAP NetWeaver?
2- What are the other parts I am missing? Are there any other IDES or such a thing around those terms?
3- How can I get installed SAP NetWeaver?
4- I have also got some info about SAP ERP, SAP CRM, SAP MM, SAP BW.. And those?
5- What are they in term of software/patch/ide/plugin/addon... ?
Please, I really need an overview in order to make all the things clear in my mind,
    Thank you!
    Denis

    Hi Denis,
SAP is a big umbrella where lot of products are developed and made to use in various industry solution like Engineering, Chemical, Retail, Oil & Gas. I used the term Solution to relate SAP application to these solutions.
SAP NW is comprised of following components SAP_BASIS, SAP_ABA, PI_BASIS and SAP_BW. In totality we refer this as NW stack.
SAP application will have underlying database like Oracle, DB2, MSSQL or MaxDB where actual business data is stored.
Please check link Products | SAP to have more insight of SAP products ,services and offerings.
    Hope this helps.

  • Differences between operational systems data modeling and data warehouse da

    Hello Everyone,
Can anybody help me understand the differences between operational systems data modeling and data warehouse data modeling>
    Thanks

    Hello A S!
What you mean is the difference between modelling after normal form like in operational systems (OLTP) e. g. 3NF and modelling a InfoCube in a data warehouse (OLAP)?
While in a OLTP you want to have data tables free of redundance and ready for transactions meaning writing and reading few records often, in an OLAP-system you need to read a lot of data for every query you do on a database. Often in an OLAP-system you aggregate these amounts of data.
Therefore you use another principle for these database scheme. This is called star schema. This means that you have one central table (called fact table) which holds the key figures and have keys to another tables with characteristics. These other tables are called dimension tables. They hold combinations of the characteristics. Normally you design it that your dimensions are small, so the access  on the data is more efficent.
the star scheme in SAP BI is a little more complex than explained here but it follows the same concept.
    Best regards,
    Peter
