Different content delivered to Internet Explorer than to Chrome?

We recently noticed some rendering issues in the Chrome browser for our SharePoint 2010 site. The differences are primarily the top nav/horizontal nav and the quicklaunch navigation.
Here's an example of our top nav code:
<asp:ContentPlaceHolder ID="PlaceHolderTopNavBar" runat="server">
<asp:ContentPlaceHolder ID="PlaceHolderHorizontalNav" runat="server">
<SharePoint:AspMenu ID="TopNavigationMenuV4" runat="server" EnableViewState="false"
DataSourceID="topSiteMap" AccessKey="<%$Resources:wss,navigation_accesskey%>"
StaticSubMenuIndent="0" StaticPopOutImageUrl="/_layouts/images/whitearrow.gif"
UseSimpleRendering="true" UseSeparateCSS="false" Orientation="Horizontal" StaticDisplayLevels="2"
MaximumDynamicDisplayLevels="2" SkipLinkText="" CssClass="s4-tn" />
<SharePoint:DelegateControl runat="server" ControlId="TopNavigationDataSource" ID="topNavigationDelegate">
<Template_Controls>
<asp:SiteMapDataSource ShowStartingNode="False" SiteMapProvider="SPNavigationProvider"
ID="topSiteMap" runat="server" StartingNodeUrl="sid:1002" />
</Template_Controls>
</SharePoint:DelegateControl>
</asp:ContentPlaceHolder>
</asp:ContentPlaceHolder>
The Chrome browser is actually receiving a different response than Internet Explorer from the server. Chrome receives this additional CSS code within a style element just before the end of the head element:
.zz1_TopNavigationMenuV4_0 {
background-color:white;
visibility:hidden;
display:none;
position:absolute;
left:0px;
top:0px;
.zz1_TopNavigationMenuV4_1 {
text-decoration:none;
.zz1_TopNavigationMenuV4_2 {
I checked this behavior by requesting the page using cURL using IE's user-agent string and using Chrome's user-agent string and found the same difference.
Additionally, the output HTML output of the menu is different. The Chrome version uses a series of span elements to contain just teh top-level links, whereas IE uses nested unordered list elements (ul) to display multiple levels of navigation.
Is it normal SharePoint behavior to delivered different content to different browsers? I should be able to override the Chrome-specific CSS by using more-specific selectors, but I'm curious if others have run into this issue, and if so, how they have addressed
it.

Update:
I already tested different user-agent strings, as I noted in my initial post.
I do have a modified compat.browser file (in C:\inetpub\wwwroot\wss\VirtualDirectories\[sitename]\App_browsers\compat.browser (isMobileDevice is set to false for iPhone and some other devices). This certainly seems like a likely source of problems, but
the same file, when applied to a development development environments, does not cause the same problem.
Production and development environments are all running Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010, database version 14.0.5136.5002.
I changed the custom masterpage to an OOB masterpage (nightandday.master). Although the top nav is not present in that masterpage, the differences between Internet Explorer and WebKit browsers were apparent. (The differences are not apparent in the development
environments).
Disabling the custom top nav feature does not address the issue (i.e. the default top nav exhibits the same problem)
Additionally, as suggested on some other sites, I checked the mozilla.browser file at C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v2.0.50727\CONFIG\Browsers. The file contains an entry that should match Safari and Chrome, but is identical across the production
and development environments:
<browser id="Safari" parentID="Gecko">
<identification>
<userAgent match="AppleWebKit/(?'webversion'\d+)" />
</identification>
<capture>
</capture>
<capabilities>
<capability name="appleWebTechnologyVersion" value="${webversion}" />
<capability name="backgroundsounds" value="true" />
<capability name="browser" value="AppleMAC-Safari" />
<capability name="css1" value="true" />
<capability name="css2" value="true" />
<capability name="ecmascriptversion" value="0.0" />
<capability name="futureBrowser" value="Apple Safari" />
<capability name="screenBitDepth" value="24" />
<capability name="tables" value="true" />
<capability name="tagwriter" value="System.Web.UI.HtmlTextWriter" />
<capability name="type" value="Desktop" />
</capabilities>
<controlAdapters>
<adapter controlType="System.Web.UI.WebControls.Menu"
adapterType="System.Web.UI.WebControls.Adapters.MenuAdapter" />
</controlAdapters>
</browser>
I was finally able to reproduce the issue in a development environment when I changed removed the adapter element from compat.browser and restarted IIS:
<browser id="Safari2" parentID="Safari1Plus">
<controlAdapters>
<adapter controlType="System.Web.UI.WebControls.Menu"
adapterType="" />
</controlAdapters>
</browser>
The chain of browser property inheritance appears to be:
Default > Mozilla > Gecko > Safari > Safari1Plus > Safari2
The asp.net menu control not rending correctly in safari thread on Stackoverflow suggests a workaround, although since I
have development environments not exhibiting the behavior I feel there is another way to address the issue.

  • Making Edge content work in Internet Explorer - Still looking for the easy fix!

    I know this subject has been kicked around a lot. I've done a lot of on-line research on the matter and came across claims of easy fixes using .js files.
    But none of them are working for me!
    Is there truly a good (and simple) way to make my HTML5 (Edge) content work in Internet Explorer?
    Here is a link to my current project
    Beach Bunny Cottage
    The foreground is the Edge content. The slide show background is not. It is .js file running a background slide show.
    Thanks!!

    Web safe colors are really important if your website is going to be viewed on a PC in Internet Explorer.

    As far as making a site compatible with IE is concerned, the best way is to test your site in this pathetic browser and see how horrendous it looks!

  • Firefox will no longer play videos and keeps telling me to download the latest version of Adobe Flashplayer which I have done 5 times but still get the same message when I try to play videos. I can play videos on Internet Explorer and Google Chrome .

    Recently when I try to play a video on Firefox I get the same message that I need to download the latest version of Adobe Flash Player. At least 5 times I have downloaded Adobe Flash Player 11 Active X and Adobe Flash Player Plugin 64 bit. Problem is that even though I have the latest version I still get the same message when I try to watch videos on Firefox. The frustrating thing is I can watch videos on Internet Explorer and Google Chrome as well as on Safari. How does that make sense?
    Today, I upgraded to Firefox 10.0.2 (x86eng-us) hoping that would enable me to watch video on Firefox but it made no difference either. I would rather use Firefox as my default browser but if I can't get help so I can view video on it I will be forced to use another browser.

    Hi arpriltime,
    Have you looked at our [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-crashes-or-flash-plugin-crashes Flash plugin troubleshooting section]? There is a lot of useful information in there that should help you get to the bottom of your issue.
    Hopefully this helps!

  • The Mozilla plugin for Windows Media Player will not allow me to access streaming video whereas both Internet Explorer and Google Chrome will.

    I cannot get the videos I've created to stream with the Mozilla browser. I have no problems with either Internet Explorer or Google Chrome and both will automatically stream my video files. I have had to install the Mozilla Plug in and I still had to wait a long time for the video file to download. Then I followed Hostgator's support advice which is on this Url http://support.hostgator.com/articles/hosting-guide/publish-your-site/how-do-i-set-up-streaming-video-or-music
    Nothing seems to be working which is a shame as I like Mozilla's browser the best and want to offer my video so that it will stream to all my users. Thanks in advance.

  • Quicktime content will not play in Internet Explorer 8 or Chrome

    Hi,
    So I go to the apple website to watch some ads, the iMac videos and movie trailers.
    I have quicktime 7.6.4 installed and working.
    I have Tunes 9.0.2 installed and working.
    I have Vista 64 bit home premium installed.
    Internet Explorer 8. Quicktime content will not play. Neither the Mac ads, or the iMac videos or the movie trailers. I get the message "Quicktime required. Free download".
    Google Chrome. Quicktime content will play the Mac ads and the movie trailers but will not play the iMac videos although it does try to load the video but fails to play it.
    Firefox 3.5.5. Quicktime content will play the Mac ads and the iMac videos and the movie trailers.
    Help.
    Thanks

    Just ran into this same problem after updating Itunes and Quicktime.
    Got a Ipod Touch for Christmas, and downloaded latest version of Itunes and Quicktime and installed it without issue.
    Quicktime movies (Mov) play fine, and mp3's play via Itunes, but in IE8 all I get is "QuickTime required. Free download" when I try to play movies on-line, such as trailers from the Apple Movie site.
    Checked the plug-in folder for IE and all the QT files seem to be there.
    I have uninstalled Itunes and Quicktime, restarted and re-installed but I get the same result.
    Anyone got any clues ?

  • JPEG Images Appear different in Safari vs Internet Explorer

    I created a logo for a web site using Photoshop CS2 and noticed that in Safari, the alpha channel (which is supposed to be transparent) gives the logo the appearance of a cream colored background while in Internet Explorer, the logo background has the expected transparent effect.
    Can anyone explain why I am seeing this difference?
    The site is http://polyols.synair.com/toll_manufacturing.htm in case anyone wants to run the comparison themselves. The logo is in the upper right hand corner of the page.
    There is only the one image file for the logo.
    Thanks,
    Jeff

    Hi Jeff, and welcome to Apple Discussions!
    I have taken a look at the link you provided, but do not see the problem you describe.
    The logo looks the same in both Safari and Explorer on my Mac, as well as Explorer and Firefox on my PC... if you could provide some extra information on which version of OSX you are using, as well as which version of Safari, we may be able to figure out what's happening.
    Maybe you could even upload a screen shot of what your browser displays and provide another link.
    Also, note that your logo is a JPEG, which does not support alpha channels or transparency (as far as I know). It looks to me like it is a flattened image of your logo with a shadow on a plain white background.
    In addition, might I suggest you extend the area below the logo, as the shadow is getting cut off.

  • Flash Player Freezing and Crashing Internet explorer and Google Chrome

    Hello,
         I have a dell xps 16 running on i7, windows 7 home premium 64 bit, 4gb ram, 500gb hdd. For at least a year i have been having problems viewing sites that use flash player such as youtube, and facebook. I orginally thought my anti virus was the problem because when ever I uninstalled it the flash began to work. I switched anti-virus programs about 3 times go from mcafee to kaspersky to avg 9.0 full...and it still would freeze up on me. Now it  has been 2 weeks since I uninstalled avg 9.0 and now it has started freezing up my internet explorer and chrome when ever i go to youtube or facebook. Also for some strange reasion it also is making some of my programs like pinnacle studios 14, itunes, and window media player unresponsive. Currently I have taken flash out of my computer. And i have to use my ipad to view youtube videos..but i still can not view flash. I have heard this has happended to many people on mulitple o.s. , Please help. I have tried reinstalling it and it says that instalation failed evertime. Ive also tried reinstalling my os with no success. I ve tried reseting my browsers and reinstalling them....no success.

    Hi a, I wonder what happened since it was working on 7/21/10. Then after you Installed AVG9 you started having problems, even after disabling the AVG add ons, etc.
    You have had this freezing issue for awhile and I don't know what is causing it, although cleaning up McAfee certainly helped and the Re-Install of Flash Player.
    I think the first thing you should do is go to the Kaspersky website and find out if there is an Uninstaller to use and use it if there is. Then I would go to AVG 9 and do the same. Then Reboot after using each one. That way you will have had a Clean Uninstall of both of them.
    Then go to Microsoft and Install Windows Defender. That way you would have some protection and that along with the Windows Firewall will help until we see what is causing this freezing and then you can Install AVG again.
    Also these: Dellweb cam central, informational alerts, dell data safe online, oovoo, fastaccess.. I wonder if any or a combination are conflicting. Have you had these for sometime or were any added about the time you started having issues? I am not familiar with them, but if they are in your system tray, I would guess they use Flash? I would try to disable them all at once, try your websites, especially youtube. If you have no problem, enable only one of those and test youtube again. Then enable another one and so on and if any are conflicting, you will be able to find the one.
    Thanks

    Check your proxy settings or contact your network administrator to make sure the proxy server is working. If you don't believe you should be using a proxy server: Go to the Chrome menu > Settings > Show
    advanced settings... > Change proxy settings...> LAN Settings and deselect "Use a proxy server for your LAN".
    Error code: ERR_CONNECTION_RESET
    and my internet explorer doesnt open the sites either, can anyone assist me with this problem please?

    Hi  hein56,
    According to your description, the error  is encountered  when you try to login your SharePoint Online site.
    To troubleshoot this issue, please follow these steps for  identifying the error code:
    View the source code of the login.microsoftonline.com webpage that shows the error message.  For example, in Internet Explorer, press the ALT key to display the menu bar (if it isn't already displayed),
    and then clickSource on the View menu.
    Search the source code for the HR= string, and then note the numeric code that follows the HR= string.
    Then you can find more information about how to troubleshoot the issue according to the error code.
    Best Regards,

  • For the last week I have had difficulty getting into the Familysearch website with Firefox. It comes up with connection reset. This problem does not occur with either internet explorer or Google chrome. Are you aware of this?

    I was told this problem is likely because of an update in coding which IE can read, but Firefox has yet to implement. Is this correct, and if so will it be rectified soon. I much prefer using Firefox than going between to the two search engines as I am having to do at present. Sometimes the home page comes out and the connection times out when processing the request, other times I can't even load the home page

    The website's link you provided isn't working here either. Contact the Website's Developers about this issue.

  • JPEG Export Looks Saturated in Internet Explorer

    I see this question in many forums and online but without a solution.
    JPEG exports (sRBG) look overly saturated when viewed in Internet Explorer browser, including when uploading/viewing in Facebook, etc, etc.  In other words, the colors looks different between Lightroom and Internet Explorer.  (Colors looks the same between Lightroom and Photoshop though.)
    As point of reference, when you download a sample JPEG image from Canon EOS's website (used to show sample images from their cameras) you see that those images also use sRGB profile.  They also look exactly the same no matter how you view them (Lightroom, Photoshop, Internet Explorer, Safari, etc.).
    What is Lightroom doing to photos upon export to JPEG and you need Lightroom or Photoshop to see the same colors?
    I saw some talk about it had to do with Lightroom presets and that you had to zero those out?  Any ideas from Windows users?

    Have you got Firefox or Safari on your machine?  In which case, how do the images look in either of those browsers?  Or, if you're using Windows 7, how do the images look in Windows photo viewer?
    Also, can you say what monitor you are using please?
    I think it might be a colour management issue.  Internet Explorer is not colour managed (not even IE9), Lightroom and Photoshop are colour managed, so is Windows 7 photo viewer (but not the XP equivalent), so are Firefox and Safari (but not Chrome).  When there's a difference between how something looks in an non-colour-managed program and colour-manged programs then it's worth checking for colour management issues.
    If your monitor has a wider gamut than sRGB, then you would expect IE9 and other non-managed programs to look over-saturated.

  • Why does Twitter operate and look inferior on Firefox when compared to Internet Explorer?

    When I send a Tweet on Twitter on Firefox, my server said that the message could not be delivered when in fact is was. The layout of Twitter also looks and acts differently when I use Internet Explorer (it is superior.) My friend was having such a hard time used Twitter on Firefox several months ago, she uses Google Chrome, which I intensely dislike. It seems that Firefox is NOT keeping up with the upgrades with Twitter and Youtube.com

    Every browser renders a webage differently. Usually very slightly but enough to notice it.
    So you have to take that into account. Not a big deal. Simply make the changes and everybody is happy.
    And Internet Explorer became obsolete in 2003 :

    So don't mention it.
