Difficult layer alignment in CS3

I'm trying to align two layers as precisely as possible in CS3.The two images were taken from very slighty different angles of a subject close to infinity. Auto Align fails, so I have fallen back on Free Transform/Warp. But I'm having a great deal of trouble getting them to align, and I could use some pointers.
Is there a way to approach this type of problem systematically?
One specific problem I'm having is that I will get one point aligned, then adjust the warp/transform to align another point, but by so doing the first point will be thrown out of whack. How does one manage this?
Another problem is that I can only see all the warp/transform handles when the image is zoomed out to 15-20%, but I need to examine each area of the image at 100% to see whether my corrections are good enough. I tried opening the file at 100% in a second window, but the changes aren't visible in window #2 in real time, and I can't scroll around window #2 because clicking on it exits warp/transform mode. Any suggestions re how to do this?
Is there some other way of doing this that I'm missing completely? Another function in PS, or a third-party plug-in, or an external tool like PTGui?

Anyone have pointers about how to approach the process of transforming and warping one image to match another? I am thinking of advice like, "Nudge the top image until you have aligned the two over a point near the center. Then, using transform, adjust the corner points until you have a point in each corner aligned. Then, using warp..." Obviously I'm making that up, but is there a way to do this systematically?

For those of you who couldn't figure out a clear solution, combining what has already been said, I figured out a little system that might help someone who likes to line up their objects WITHOUT have to move-one-of-the-objects-that-you-so-carefully-already-placed...
Simply copy the position of the importantly-placed object (let's call it object A) that you don't want to move, and then select that and the other object you want to align and hit the center align (or whatever align you want). If you are already lost and don't see the Align tab, you can find it the "Windows" menu.
Obviously object A & B are now aligned but are out of place. Now parent object B (that you didn't copy the keyframe from) to the important object A. Next, paste the original position back into the important object A, and both will return to the original spot.
It's not as nice an abobe built-in solution, but hey at least it works.

How do I create layer styles in CS3 to use in elements?

sorry if this is a very broad question, I am new to CS3. I usually use elements.
I really want to create lots of different layer styles that I can save and use in Elements.
Can someone tell me, or direct me to a good tutorial for making new layer styles in photoshop.
Also is it easy to save the new style so I can load to elements?

Unlocking a "Partially Locked Layer" in Ps CS3

I am working on a poster for a school project and I have come across something that I have never encountered before in the 4 years of photoshopping I have done. Its a "Partially locked layer". The layer is a text layer and the "lock" button in the layers pallet is off. I have been searching around for how to unlock this layer I have only found these on the "backround" layer not text layers and i cannot figure out ( nor can my teacher(s)) how to unlock it. I need to just transform and edit the text in this layer but am unable to due to the partial locking of the layer.
Any ideas on how to unlock?
What I have tried:
restarting Ps CS3
Lock Button
Copying the text layer
saving as another name and re-opening
Differnt Computer

Are either of the 2 icons in red down? If so click on them so they are not depressed.
If you accidentally used New>> background from layer (your layer would look like the screenshot above). In taht case thje text has been bitmapped, adn even releasing would release this bitmapped.
If this does not solve your problem, can you post a screenshot of your layers palette?

Can't unlock background layer using Photoshop CS3 Extended

I installed CS3 a few days ago (though I'm an experienced CS2 and Photoshop 6 user) and opened Photoshop CS3 Extended today for the first time.
The problem I'm having is with unlocking the background layer. I read in the documentation and on the Net about double-clicking and renaming the layer (which is what I did in other versions), or creating a new file with a transparent background, but those things aren't working for me in this version.
I opened a tiff file (a logo I want to use as the basis for a new image) but I can't unlock the background layer so I can copy, manipulate or add to it. Everything on the Layers drop-down menu is grayed out, as are the word Lock: and the symbols following it in the Layers window.
I tried creating a new image but when File|New dialog box opens the option to use transparent in the Background Contents dropdown is grayed out, too.
I'd appreciate some help with this.

The issue has to do with the mode that you are in. If it is a TIFF or GIF file that you are opening, when you click on "Image -- Mode" you are likely to see "Indexed Color..." with a checkmark next to it. Be sure to select "RGB Color." Once you have done that, you can simply double-click the background layer in the layers palette to unlock the image.

Problem with Layer Align

Ok, I created a website and use ImageReady to export it to
Dreamweaver. I then converted the tables to layers and set up the

Unfortunately I forgot to set up a parent layer, to place all
the other content within, so I could align the site to center. Now
the site looks fine when viewed at 1280 x 1024 but if viewed at
1024 x 768 it is offset to the right.
I tried to create a new parent layer...aligned auto center
and then tried to select all layers, cut and paste them into the
new parent layer...but dreamweaver would not allow it.
I then tried to go into the code and write in a parent layer
around the content....still nothing.
Any ideas how to do this quickly and easily???

How do I get an ap div (layer) to stack on top...it is so
easy in all other adobe programs...I can't even find a layers
panel.

The z-index style value determines the stacking order for any
absolutely or
relatively positioned element on the page (by the way, the
old 'layers'
panel is now called the AP Elements panel).
Do not use negative z-indices, however, as that will get you
into support
issues.

Rasterize Layer in Fireworks CS3?

Hi,
I am trying to do this tutorial in Fireworks CS3, but I am

Layer Control in CS3

Is there a way to turn layers off on individual pages of a document and have them turned on on other pages in the same document?

Adjustment Layer Issue in CS3 & new Mac Pro

anyone having the following issue:
when adding an adjustment layer to a file I get a spinning beachball for 10-30 seconds before the adjustment layer is applied. Strange behaviour never seen before. New Mac Pro Dual Quad 3.2ghz, 10gb Ram, Nvidia Gefore 8800GT.

Strange Layer Style Behavior CS3

I'm having a problem with creating a custom layer style. When I click the layer style button at the bottom of the layer pallet, or chiise a layer style from the Layers menu) Photoshop does not open the Layer Styles dialog box. It instead applys some sort of default style and I see a message in the top tool bar that says "Click and drag to reposition the effect." Double-clicking the layer in the Layers Pallet switches to the hand tool and disables most menu functions. I either have to hit Enter or Cmd-Period to cancel and return to normal functionality.
Is this some arcaine setting I've never encountered before, or is PS broken? The problem seems to have started after I ran the OS X Software Update yesterday-- I'm using OS X 10.4.11. I also recently switched my Workplace setting from a custom two-monitor pallet layout to a single monitor default layout.

It seems like the layer effects dialog is popping up off-screen somewhere... When you double-click on a layer with styles/effects applied to it, it usually pops that up, and then if you mouse over the image while that's up, you get the hand tool and allows you to drag to reposition the effect.
That would also explain the disabling of the menu items, that also happens when the layer styles dialog box pops up.
I'm not sure how you go about fixing that, though... I would try saving your workspace layout as something else, and then hitting window>workspace>"reset palette locations" or "reset menus" (although you'll probably lose any custom menu stuff that way) and I would also try applying other default workspaces.

Using a .swf as an HTML layer in DW CS3

Hello,
I am using a .swf file as a background for my site and I can get the thing to work in Firefox and Safari on the Mac, but not in IE or Opera. It will play the .swf but in layers in on top of the content, not underneath. What is so different about how IE and Opera view the page that Firefox and Safari do not have. The .css files are posted on the root directory, just check the code to find the file names. I'm going to continue to experiment on the code and see if I can come up with something. Also this site displays in a different way on Netscape, it just leaves the movie out altogether.

You need a document type on your first line of HTML code. On DW menu hit FILE > Convert and select HTML 4.01 Transitional as your doc type. Without a doc type declaration, your pages will have undrepdictable cross browser results.
I've never needed to use an SWF as page background, so can't be much help. Maybe this thread from another forum will shed some light.

Way to align layers way CS2 did in CS3 photoshop

Hi
Is there a way in PS CS3 to align layers in way PS CS2 did? In CS3 there is no way to align layers by selecting them and selct layer to alignt to it. Not to move all layers selected but only move layers aligned to one specified layer by clicking it after selcting all layers? Any sugestions?

I could be wrong, but it sounds like you may have confused the "reference object" functionality between applications. In Illustrator, an additional click sets the target align-to object, but Photoshop layer alignment has never worked that way.
On the subject of controlling alignment reference, Help says: "To align the content of one or more layers to a selection border, make a selection in the image, and then select the layers in the Layers panel. Use this method to align to any specified point in the image."
So you can leverage this "selection border" reference feature to set your align-to layer. Multi-select the layers to be aligned, then Ctrl/Cmd-Click the thumbnail of the desired align-to layer to load it as a selection. Now all the other layers will align to the selected one. It's like that extra click, just add the Ctrl/Cmd key.

Audio layer causes "NOT realtime" on RAM Preview

Hi I am using a new machine I built mostly for AE and music video production.
Mac Pro 2008 - 2.8ghz 8-core
8GB RAM
AE CS3 + Nucleo Pro 2.0
Areca 1261ML
I have spent some time tuning the Nucleo & AE parameters to work most effeciently and I'm happy with the performance execpt for this issue.
What I am noticing is I get 29.97 fps playback with the RAM preview and NO audio, but as soon as I check the audio layer my fps drops to 22 fps and the audio only plays for only half of the preview. Most importantly the audio gets out of sync... It is frustratingly difficult to align video and audio like I've grown use to in AE7 & 6.5
Perhaps I'm missing a preference somewhere?
My comp is 29.97 fps 640x480. My project settings are set to 44.100 khz.
My footage is partially
60fps 640x480, 48K audio (audio unchecked)
30fps HD 720p , 48K audio (audio unchecked)
& mostly stop-motion jpg sequences taken from a 2MP camera.
1 song - 44.1khz wav
All my previous projects behave similarly.
All of this plays fine with no audio. However, even 29.97 SD alone still causes "NOT realtime" playback as soon as I check the audio on. This happens no matter if it is full-res or 1/4.
I have tried:
making sure all audio is set to 44.100Khz and also tried 48,000khz (with 48k audio)
changing the buffer size on the audio preference
swapping out the 44.100 wav with 44.100 mp3 or a 48,000 wav
Also tried switching to an external USB audio device in the audio hardware preferences - no change
still plays back in the 22fps range...
I don't remember having this issue on my XP64 quad core machine w/AE 7.0 OR with my old dual cpu XP box running AE 6.5.
As this Mac Pro is supposed to be for music video production. This is really an important issue to me and is making my work very difficult and tedious -- or I have to just render it out like in the ole slow computer days...
*EDIT* It does play 15 fps realtime -- if I tell it to skip 1 frame (just double checked - thought it played sluggishly too) But this is kinda upsetting... It should resolve my timing issues for now.

no effects on the audio -- it's just straight wav 44.100Khz.
Preferences > Audio Hardware > Built in line output
Preferences > Audio Output Mapping > Built in line output
System Preferences > Sound > Output > Built in line output
All of these settings in any configuration produce the exact same result. Presently set to "built in line output", I have also tried using the USB output and the ones labled "built in line input/built in line output" -- no success, even if all the settings are set to the same line or pointed to different audio hardware. Buffer size also has no effect.
I'm really stumped.
Also, my audio library is on a HDD by itself. I tried hard to set up the machine to not have issues like this...
I'd like to get a MOTU Ultralight for audio recording one day, but I don't think this is a $500 issue now. Plus, I doubt it will make a difference.
I mean 15fps works, but I miss stuff when I'm viewing stop-motion footage. I feel like I wasted a lot of money on hardware and CS3.

Annoying layer "ghost" when dragging a layer

What is the purpose of this annoying new layer ghost that appears when you drag a layer in Photoshop CS5? It's very irritating, since it doesn't seem to serve an useful purpose, and it makes it difficult to align layers with precise pixel borders. Can I turn it off?

Yes here a a lot of bad visual decisions been made at Apple within Cocoa. Personally, in most respects things visually are a move backwards, from Carbon. Screen refresh also seems to be poorer, and more clunky.
My personal least favorite visual feature: In Exposé, when you use Show Windows - this ridiculous, thick blue bar with nasty beveled edges appears. Looks like the result of a high school "Program Your Own Operating system" project.
