Directory Server Replication

Hello all.
I am looking for a best practices for DS 6.3 replication wth Sun Access Manager and Sun Portal Server.
Here is the scenario:
We have 2 sites, A and B. At each site there are the following: 1 DS 6.3, 1 Sun Access Manager, and 1 Sun Portal Server. The DS 6.3 instance servers both AM and Portal. Both configurations at each site are configured the same except for host name's and IP's. Essentially, what I am looking for is to setup multi-master replication between the 2 site so that user/group data is replicated between the 2 DS instances.
I have configured MMR before, the problem here is that, once it is configured, one side of AM and Portal and corrupted and not usable. I suspect it is that replication overwrites AM and Portal configs that are stored in DS.
Does anyone have any insight on how to set this up properly?

I have configured MMR before, the problem here is that, once it is configured, one side of AM and Portal and corrupted and not usable. I suspect it is that replication overwrites AM and Portal configs that are stored in DS.I don't think I understand your problem. What are your replica databases and which suffixes are being overwritten wrongly?

  • Directory Server Replication and Access Manager

    I've set up 2 Access Managers instances AM1 and AM2 connected to one Directory Server DS1. Changes to AM1 are replicated to AM1. DS1 is replicated to DS2 using MMR. I'm following Sun's document http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/819-4672/6n6qcof22?a=view to setup failover for this environment. Step 5 says
    Modify the following properties to reflect the host and port number of a consumer Directory Server installed in Configuring For Replication .
    com.iplanet.am.directory.host = DS1.domain
    com.iplanet.am.directory.port = port of DS1
    How do I modify above to reflect DS2 so that should DS1 fail, DS2 takes over?
    Also step 9 says - In the serverconfig.xml file, specify the host name and port number of the consumer directory installed in Configuring For Replication, as shown in the following example for the serverconfig.xml file.
    <iPlanetDataAccessLayer>
    <ServerGroup name="default" minConnPool="1"
    maxConnPool="10">
    <Server name="Server1"
    host="consumer1.example.com" port="389"
    type="SIMPLE" />
    Again, how do I modify serverconfig.xml to reflect the 2nd Directory Server, DS2 so that if DS1 fails both AM1 and AM2 can connect to DS2. If anybody has done this please let me know how it worked, thanks.

    Are you talking about Access Manager flopping over from ds1 to ds2 if ds1 is down?
    In serverconfig.xml look for the line containing 'Server Name' and add a line like this directly underneath of it:
    <Server name="Server2" host="ds2" port="389" type="SIMPLE" />
    Save and exit
    vi AMConfig.properties and add something like this after the existing com.iplanet.am.directory.host and com.iplanet.am.directory.port:
    /* Added for multi-master directory fail-over */
    com.iplanet.am.directory.host=ds2
    com.iplanet.am.directory.port=389
    com.iplanet.am.replica.retries=3
    com.iplanet.am.replica.delay.between.retries=5000
    /* End Added for multi-master directory fail-over */
    Save and exit
    Restart the Access Manager web container

  • Directory Server Replica and Messaging Server 6

    I install Directory Server 5.2 as Master Replica in one machine (V120) and on the other machine (V240) I install the following:
    1. SunONE Directory Server 5.2 (Consumer
    Replica) or slave replica.
    2. SunONE Identity Server
    3. SunONE Messaging Server 6
    I have successfully install and configured the 3 Servers, when they are running on just one machine (one box). But when I try to run them in two separate machines as described above, the messaging server acts strangely and it's configuration fails, when i try to configure it on the directory server replica.
    In simpler words, I want to know if someone has installed Messaging Server in a Directory Server Replication scenario, where there are two machines involve. Because all works well when we install everything on one machine (one box) but I am having hard time configuring the messaging server in this split setup scenario.
    So, if someone has idea about how to run the Messaging Server 6 ( ./configure ) file successfully on a Directory Server 5.2 Replica, please suggest me in detail.
    Thanking you,
    Farhan Ahmed.

    Messaging Server uses LDAP in two ways. The obvious one is that user/group/domain information is stored there.
    The non-obvious way is that some configuration information is stored in LDAP, in the "o=NetscapeRoot" tree. This tree is NOT ususally replicated, so if you perform the installation against one LDAP server, and then attempt to move the configuration to point to another one, and don't make a separate replication agreement for the configuration, your server won't work correctly.
    To configure Messaging against a replica, you also need to understand how the replication and "referral" works. Without studying your scenario, I cannot tell what has failed, but indeed, there are users that have configured Messaging 6.0 against a replica LDAP system.
    You may want to open a tech support ticket, and get personal help for your issue.

  • Subtree replication in Directory Server 5

    Hi,
    I previously posted this question in the netscape.server.directory
    newsgroup because I didn't know this one existed! (The link on the
    iplanet web page points to the
    netscape newsgroup)
    The administrator's guide for iplanet Directory Server 5 states that
    "the smallest unit of replication is the database".
    Our previous implementation of replication using DS 4.x replicates
    subtrees.
    Does anyone know if iPlanet is going to restore this feature in further
    versions or why they do not support it anymore?
    Thanks!

    Anyone wanting to control what part of the DIT, and what attributes of each
    object are synced, may want to take a look at SimpleSync from CPS Systems
    www.cps-systems.com
    This product lets you select what part(s) of the directory to sync, or which
    parts to exclude. It also lets you determine what attributes get synced.
    Further, it treats all directories as peers, so you can sync in one or both
    directions. Lastly, it syncs at the attribute level so is not schema
    dependent.
    In addition to iPlanet, SimpleSync synchronizes Active Directory/Exchange
    2000 Forests, Exchange 5.5 Organizations, Lotus Notes/Domino.
    Cheers,

  • Iplanet Directory server 5.0 replication issue

    Hi,
    I'm currently running some test for replication with the OLD version of DS 5.0 on Windows XP
    Running 2 Servers Master A and Consumer B, where A is the original who initialise B with Data then from there on Master A replicates changes to Consumer B.
    My problem is here, I can initialise the the Data ( copying it from A to B ) no problem.
    But when I make changes in A and wait for it to replication from A --> B.
    it does nothing.
    I followed MOST of the steps in the replication guide for Administrator, but have hit a wall.
    Only part i did no understand is below:
    //=============================================
    Create the entry corresponding to the supplier bind DN, if it does not exist. This is the special entry that the supplier will use to bind.
    In the Directory Server Console, click the Directory tab, and create an entry. For example you could use cn=Replication Manager,cn=config.
    Specify a userPassword attribute-value pair.
    If you have enabled password expiration, or intend to do so in future, disable the password expiration policy on this attribute, by adding the passwordExpirationTime attribute with a value of 20380119031407Z.
    //=============================================
    Therefore I used cn=Replication Manager,cn=config wheen it asked during the replication config setup.
    I also used this when creating the Directory server instance for Master A and Consumer B.
    Logs are below:

  • Replication : Directory Server shutdown while creating user

    Hi,
    We are trying to do a load test with multiple threads trying to create entries in LDAP Replication setup. The load test is being done using a in-house test tool which spawns multiple threads and uses a JAVA API provided by iPlanet Directory Server to create entries in Directory Server.
    The test runs fine in Single Directory Server setup. But when we repeat the same test by using a replicated setup (both Single Master as well as Multi Master) we face an issue as listed below:
    - First entry gets created and also replicated across
    - When the request for second entry is recieved , the directory server shuts down without any error in the log file.
    Any urgent help is highly appreciated.
    Type and Version : iPlanet Directory Server 5.1
    OS : Windows 2000 server
    Thanks in advance,
    Krishna Kumar

    Hi ,
    We are actually using iPlanet Directory Server 5.1 SP1 here.
    We had even tried SP2 for the above issue, still we are getting the above problem. Is there any other patches available for the above problem, please let us know about it.
    Thanks,
    Krishna Kumar

  • Configure replication between directory server 5.1 and 5.2

    we have two directory servers running on different machine 5.1 and new 5.2. All database have been successfully backup and restore from 5.1 to new 5.2. In this scenario, we would like to setup 5.1 and new 5.2 D.S as multi-master replication.
    As described in the sun Documentation, we have copy few ldif file from new 5.2 to 5.1 so that both schema are up to date.
    The new instance of 5.2 is running fine. However, on the other hand, 5.1 has a problem to start the server as show in the following below.
    # ./start-slapd
    [31/May/2005:14:07:43 +0800] dse - The entry cn=schema in file /usr/iplanet/servers/slapd-ifpdev02/config/schema/50ns-admin.ldif is invalid, error code 21 (Invalid syntax) - object class nsAdminServer: Unknown required attribute type "nsServerID"
    [31/May/2005:14:07:43 +0800] dse - Please edit the file to correct the reported problems and then restart the server.
    Any help from you guys are greatly appreciated.

    I recommened that you read the Release Notes of DS5.2, there are some notes on Replication between 5.1 and 5.2.
    ===
    In Directory Server 5.2, the schema file 11rfc2307.ldif has been altered to conform to rfc2307. If replication is enabled between 5.2 servers and 5.1 servers, the rfc2307 schema MUST be corrected on the 5.1 servers, or replication will not work correctly.
    Workaround
    To ensure correct replication between Directory Server 5.2 and Directory Server 5.1, perform the following tasks:
    * For zip installations, remove the 10rfc2307.ldif file from the 5.1 schema directory and copy the 5.2 11rfc2307.ldif file to the 5.1 schema directory. (5.1 Directory Server Solaris packages already include this change.)
    * Copy the following files from the 5.2 schema directory into the 5.1 schema directory, overwriting the 5.1 copies of these files:
    11rfc2307.ldif, 50ns-msg.ldif, 30ns-common.ldif, 50ns-directory.ldif, 50ns-mail.ldif, 50ns-mlm.ldif, 50ns-admin.ldif, 50ns-certificate.ldif, 50ns-netshare.ldif, 50ns-legacy.ldif, and 20subscriber.ldif.
    * Restart the Directory Server 5.1 server.
    * In the Directory Server 5.2 server, set the nsslapd-schema-repl-useronly attribute under cn=config to on.
    * Configure replication on both servers.
    * Initialize the replicas.

  • Replication problem with iPlanet directory server 5.1 SP2 HF1

    If I make a apply a change to either of consumer servers for an entry that belongs to the large database, that change does get applied to the consumer targated but it can not refer the change to teh master. Neither the master, nor the other consumers get updated consequently. I did not have this problem with directory server 5.1 SP1. I only see this problem after I apply directory server 5.1 SP2 HF1.
    From the error log file, I see the following message:
    NSMMReplicationPlugin - repl_set_mtn_referrals: could not set referrals for replica

    I have a suggestion - try another means for administering your directory - use the console only for maintenance and tuning purposes. There are several products out there that are much better for day to day operations ...
    Otherwise - I think with 5.1 the view is based on the rdn of the entries - and I am not sure it is customizable. Additionally I know 5.2 solved your second issue - maybe the latest SP of 5.1 has solved it as well - though I don't really know ...

  • Issue w/ Case Differences Using the IBM Directory Server MA

    We have the following issue using the IBM Directory Server MA using FIM 2010 R2 (Version 4.1.3479.0).
    We provision a new object, e.g., uid=jdoe,ou=users,o=contoso, into an instance of IBM Directory Server
    The object is created in IBM Directory Server as uid=jdoe,ou=users,o=contoso
    A Full Import on the IBM Directory Server MA runs and confirms the export
    Subsequent imports, sync, and exports run successfully
    <Time passes>
    A Full Import on the IBM Directory Server MA runs, and this object shows up as a staging-error (uid=jdoe,ou=Users,o=contoso)
    Subsequent imports and syncs report errors on this object (staging-error)
    Note that we do not manipulate the anchor (DN) of this object once it is created in IBM Directory Server. Other attributes are synchronized, but the object is never renamed/moved. This case change does not happen with all of the objects brought
    in during the Full Import, but the number of instances do increase periodically. At this point, it does look like the import is changing from a lowercase "u" to an uppercase "U" but not vice versa.
    I found a related
    TechNet article containing the following remark:
    "IBM Directory Server does not guarantee that the case of a DN component will match in all instances. On a synchronization or import from IBM Directory Server, this can manifest itself as an unexpected update. For example, if you create
    O=TEST, and then create the user cn=MikeDan,O=TEST, this might be imported from IBM Directory Server as
    cn=MikeDan,O=test. Because of the case difference, FIM treats this as an update on subsequent full imports."
    Unfortunately, the article does not propose a resolution.
    Has anyone encountered this issue? More importantly has anyone resolved this or found an acceptable workaround?
    Note that deleting the connector space is not an acceptable workaround. :)

    I remember experiencing this issue when we were on 5.0, and I believe it persists through 5.1 as well.
    There is a comment in the 5.2 release notes that something similar was fixed:
    Changing case sensitive attribute values failed in MMR. (4624693)
    If I had to take a wild guess, I would say that the server does some internal checking to see if the value has changed, possibly based on the attribute syntax, to avoid replicating "changes" that really don't change anything except case. I doubt that all your custom attributes are case-sensitive, though. Enabling replication probably "turns on" this behavior, which doesn't go away even if replication is disabled.
    In any case, you're probably out of luck unless/until you upgrade to 5.2.

  • Performance concern with directory server implementation

    performance concern with directory server implementation
    I first posted this at metalink forum, and was suggested to post it here instead.
    Hi,
    I'd like to get any feedback regarding performance of oracle directory server implementation. Below is what I copy&patested from 9i Net Services Administrator's Guide, I found no 'directory server vendor documentation', so anything regarding this is welcome too.
    Performance
    Connect identifiers are stored in a directory server for all clients to access.
    Depending on the number of clients, there can be a significant load on a directory
    server.
    During a connect identifier lookup, a name is searched under a specific Oracle
    Context. Because of the scope of the lookup, you probably want users to experience
    relatively quick performance so that the database connect time is not affected. Users
    may begin to notice slow connect times if lookups takes more than one second.
    You can resolve performance problems changing the network topology or
    implementing replication.
    See Also: Directory server vendor documentation for details on

  • Unable to Start/Stop Directory server from console

    We have two Directory Server 5.2 installations with both running as masters with replication between them. One of them was installed with the admin server and the other without. On the one that was installed without the admin server we added it afterwards.
    We now find that on the one that had the admin server installed after the directory server that we cannot start/stop the directory server from the server console nor can we view or access backups or logs from the console. The system does however create the log and backup files and we can start/stop it from the command line.
    I read in a post somewhere that the admin server can be created with a different user from the directory server or with the same username but a different domain and wondered if that was the problem but have looked through the configuration files on both machines and haven't managed to spot a discrepancy.
    Does anyone have any ideas where and what to check?
    Thanks in advance.
    Peter

    Ah, I wouldn't have recognized this scenario if you didn't report the scrozzled user name. The "access denied" error happens for the simple reason that 'IAyjcJlYKL' is not a valid user in your domain. Fancy that. If you look in your config.xml for the "node-manager-username" element, you may find the value is encrypted, and probably is 'IAyjcJlYKL'.
    It might be best if you filed a support case for this. I can make some guesses about what you should do, but it's just a guess. In any case, if you try fixing something, make a backup of the file first.
    The two things you can try doing are (backup the files and shut down everything first):
    * Edit the nm_password.properties file, replacing the one "hashed" line with two lines, setting the "username" property and the "password" property, both in cleartext. When the nodemanager starts up, it will replace those two lines with the "hashed" value.
    * Edit the config.xml file, replacing the values in the "node-manager-username" and "node-manager-password-encrypted" elements with their cleartext versions.
    Then start up the nodemanager and server.
    I'm familiar with this because I saw this happen, and I'm trying to remember the strange thing we had to do. I worked this out with BEA support a while ago. If it helps, my case number was #796710.

  • Access Manager Failed to Connect to Directory Server

    Dear All,
    I have problem with Directory Server connection in Access Manager. This happened in Production site, all application that integrated with Oracle Access Manager (OAM) for Single Sign On are not accessible after the Directory Server connection problem occur in OAM. The problem has only started occurring suddenly, before it the all service including the OAM and Directory Server is running well. Below are the error messages that appear in WebGate log file (ohs1.log) and OAM log file (oblog.log) :
    >> OHS/WebGate (ohs1.log) :
    [2014-01-21T09:25:12.0053+07:00] https://community.oracle.com/OHS https://community.oracle.com/OHS-9999 https://community.oracle.com/apache2entry_web_gate.cpp host_id: &lt;WEBGATE_HOSTNAME&gt; [host_addr:10.10.254.178] [ecid: 004w76rlRYt0NuapxKL6iW0000sE001oGY] The host and port from the requested URL could not be found in the Policy database. Check if the corresponding directory service is up.

    The OAM using the Load Balancer between the LDAP Directory Server to OAM's component. When the error appears, there are no problem with the Load Balancer and all of Directory Sever services is up. There are two Directory Server servers in Multi Master Replication and 14 WebGate servers that integrated with OAM. Is there a limitation number of WebGate for integrated to the OAM?
    I have tried to set some parameters in OAM configuration to solve this problem. I set the Maximum Connection of Directory Server parameter to 10 value (in OAM Console), the LDAPOperationTimeout paramater to 1 hour value and the LDAPMaxNoOfRetries parameter to 2 value (in the globalparams.xml). After set these parameters, the error is not appear in some days, but suddenly appear again in the same error message. May be set these parameters is not appropriate solution for the problem or the value that I set is not correct. Any experience with this?
    I still don't know what the root cause of this problem. Restart all of OAM services (including the WebGate) is temporary solution when the error appear.
    Any idea for this problem?
    Thanks in advice.

    Hi Jun-Y,
    Thank you for your answer.
    What do you means with the Directory Server's idle timeout is the "Idle Timeout" parameter in LDAP Client Control Settings?
    I use Oracle Directory Server Enterprise 11.1.1.5.0. Now, the Directory Server's idle timeout parameter is "unlimited" value.
    If the idle timeout of the load balancer set 1 hour, it means that I must change the directory server's idle timeout to be less than 1 hour. Isn't right?

  • Active Directory - Server 2008 R2 and 2012 R2 (Server Formatting or not productive

    Hello guys, I come here to try to clarify a great doubts regarding Server Operating Systems, I will attempt to detail the most of my scenario.
    Suppose I have a Server 2008 R2 in production, and this is my Active Directory server (meudominio.local) and am managing through Group Policy settings my workstations that are around 60-70 computers, guys my doubts the thing is, if I need some time to format
    and perform a fresh installation of my server as it will be my Active Directory? Of course I will have lost my domain controller and I have to accomplish the placement of each workstation again that enters my domain one by one.
    I know there is the option of AD replication, so we call the Active Directory, even for another version of the Operating System, prátia already realized this, but it most often comes not functioning properly, done without replication problems Server 2003 to
    2008 R2.
    Guys like to know a solution to not having to put my plants in my domain network again one by one, is there any way to backup so that when I reinstalled the system and the AD again in my server stations return to "see" again that server as your domain
    controller, even me installing AD with the same domain name before this formatting stations do not respond to this driver in this case do the Network ID or add the station to the area again, so she creates a new user profile for example (Max.meudominio) while
    your old profile "guy" still remains on the machine, I adopted the practice of editing the record of this newly created profile and pointing him well for the old user folder which contains all data and settings, eg edit my key "ProfileImagePath"
    regedit logged in with the newly created profile (Max.meudominio) ->
    (switch "ProfileImagePath" C:\Users\Max.meudominio) thus pointing to the folder before replacing in the field again this season after formatted server, thus ->
    (Switch "ProfileImagePath" C:\Users\Max), detail that we give permission for all such user "C:\Users\Max" folder, after that restart the computer and he comes back with the user profile and all your settings.
    I wonder if there is another method to perform this procedure, do not know even a backup AD to not have to replace all the seasons again "meudominio.local".
    Thank you for your attention!

    As the practice of replication I know her mostly said she has some flaws when I do the replication of my domain to another server but it works correctly, so having a server "master" and the other ServidorBKP as "slave", in redundancy,
    the problem is when I say, and put the "ServidorBKP" being my primary domain controller and disabling my main controller, to disable or turn off my main controller the stations themselves are unable to login because it does not communicate with the
    my ServidorBKP "slave" even I put it as the main driver of course.
    Regarding the System State as far as I know this option existed in Server 2003.

  • How can I achieve high available solution for directory server

    You can start with deploying multi master replication which will give you 2 servers available for writes (and as many read-only consumers as you want).
    You can also install Directory Server in a Cluster (using Sun Cluster) which will provide more failover capabilities.
    If you combine both, you should be able to have almost no downtime.
    You can also use the Directory Proxy Server (aka iDAR) to provide transparent failover for client applications.
    I hope this help.

    Ludovic.
