Disabling automatic download of Java plug-in

We make a software product which is deployed as a large applet and uses the Java plug-in with IE. We have a customer who NEVER wants the plug-in to be installed dynamically, even from an internal location. Instead of attempting to install the plug-in from the codebase location, they want to redirect users to a static web page with instructions on how to request the plug-in from their IT department. We attempted to disable the automatic install by removing the codebase string. When the application loaded it still tried to download the Java plug-in. Is there any way to disable the automatic install and redirect to a static web page?

hi,
we had about the same problem and solved it like this. We created an installer which will use an internal plugin (installed in it's directory) with InstallAnywhere (http://www.zerog.com). The installer creates an executable and that will check in the registry if the java-plugin needed is installed. If so it will invoke the browser and navigate to the applet-html. If not it will display a message but instead you could easily navigate to a static html-page. I admit that it's not a very nice solution but it works and might be the most user-friendly solution.

I keep trying to disable automatic downloads from iTunes (don't want TV shows I've purchased through my Apple TV to download onto my computer), by going to iTunes - Preferences - Store - and it works for a while, then it starts to automatically download these TV shows again when I open iTunes. So it works some of the time, but not consistently. Very frustrating! Can anyone help?

After reading some of the similar posts on here, I tried removing all the items from the iTunes downloads folder on my hard drive, and signing out from the iTunes store. Signing out from the iTunes store solved the problem temporarily, but as soon as I signed in again, the automatic downloads started again. When I looked in the iTunes downloads folder, there they were again - the .tmp files of the TV shows I DON'T want on my computer. Now I have another problem. When I went back into iTunes to check if the Store Preferences were still set to NO automatic downloads, I found those choices greyed out. They were still set to disable automatic downloads (no tick in those boxes) but now I can't change them at all. So I must have thrown out something I needed when I threw the contents of the downloads folder into the trash, and then emptied the trash. I tried to get the trash back using Time Machine, but couldn't find it in there. Sighhhh! I'm at my wits end and now I'm afraid to make things any worse than they already are.

Can you disable automatic downloading in Safari? This is so annoying! I don't see any way of disabling it in preferences. I like to keep my downloads organized by selecting where I want to save them. Not having them all download into one folder. Its not always obvious what links are to a file so you end up with all kinds of random crap downloaded in one folder.

Are you asking how to download iTunes to your computer, or are you asking if iTunes should open automatically when you plug your iPad to your computer?

In Mail Preferences/General, I have selected "Check for new messages - Manually." In spite of this, Mail has downloaded fresh messages waiting for me to read when I return to my iMac. In other words, it's not doing it Manually, but automatically.
I will soon be travelling for a few weeks. I want to be able to read my mail from an iPad on the road. If the iMac keeps downloading fresh email I wouldn't be able to read it when I'm away from home. My only choice seems to be to go in and change the settings (uncheck Remove copy from server....) in all six of my mail accounts in order to leave messages on the server for the iPad to access. I don't understand what the Check for messages Manually in the General settings is good for.

Thanks for the suggestion. It makes sense. Unfortunately, my wife will be using the iMac while I'm gone, so she would have to forward what she thought was important. Seems odd to me that the Manual command doesn't seem to do anything.

How to disable the Next Generation Java Plug-in?

How to get to use the classic plugin, that is the question. The NG plug-in was introduced in 6u10 and I have 6u14.
That is, if it's on in the first place (I have no idea).
I was told to turn it off when I complained to a company about an applet which doesn't work so well (it kind of works but is frustrating to use, animations are anything but smooth, random delays in drawing graphics and things like that), and apparently the new plugin is suspected to cause the problems (which other customers haven't reported).
Windows version of java has the option to turn it off and Sun has instructions on how to turn it off, but in Linux there is no such an option in Java Control Panel and if it's possible to do in Linux, googling and searching forums didn't really help.:(
Of course I could try downgrade, but I suspect there is no ready package for 6u9 nowhere to be found and the cvs pkgbuild I found in AUR proved to be too bitchy for me and would require more editing than simply changing version number and md5 sums.

Is there a way to disable the Next Generation Java Plug-in using a script or batch file for GPO software deployments?
Our group needs to deploy JRE 6 Update 20 to a large number of Oracle Financials users. As part of this deployment, we need to disable the Next Generation Java Plug-in as part of the installation for each desktop. Our plan is to extract the MSI installer package from Sun and create a GPO for software deployment.
It seems you cannot disable the Next Generation Java Plug-in using a simple registry hack or customized MST transform file. Is there another method for disabling Next Generation Java Plug-in?

Also, will this set the configuration just for the user logged on (current user) OR for all users existing and future?
We are having trouble getting next-gen java shut off for all possible users that may logon to a machine in future .. thus looking at putting in bootup login script, but hoping there is a better way to have it take affect at the machine level. Or to at least automate at the user level (existing and future windows users/profiles)

we have an swing applet on our intranet web server.
We dont want to install the java plug-in on each client pc( a lot of pc...)
Our client machines are not connected to internet so they can not download the Java plug-in.
Is it possible to have the java plug-in , on our web server and let the users to download it from the web server to run the swing applet?
if we decide to let the swing libraries to be downloaded with the applet to clients, what libraries should be added?

I don't know about the Swing classes, cause I've never used
Swing, but JRE plugin can be downloaded to your webserver,
and pc in the intranet can download it form there.

How to reload proxy configuration with Next Generation Java Plug-in

When using the Next Generation Java Plug-in, I no longer see an option in the console to reload the proxy from the browser by pressing p. If the proxy information is changed in the browser after the Java console loads, is there a way to reload the proxy from the browser? If not, why was it removed?
It's been useful to us because of the way we test with LoadRunner, which uses a proxy. Our other options are to either disable the Next Generation Java Plug-in so the option comes back, or set the proxy in the Java settings instead of trying to read from the browser, but I'm trying to find out it's one of those will be necessary.
We're using Java 1.6.0_17. Thanks!

I really need to disable the next-generation Java Plug-in on the Advanced tab of the Java control Panel, but it is grayed out. I have admin rights. I tried to uninstall/install Java, but that did not work. Any suggestions? Thank you

Lately, iTunes on my computer has been evil with me. It's been acting up by crashing or not letting me download videos when it gives me the "error 50" message. Every time, I open up iTunes on my computer it starts downloading the Digital Copy of Rise of the Guardians and True Blood season 5. So how do I stop the iTunes program on my computer from automatically downloading? It is really annoying. My computer is a Lenovo laptop with Windows 8.
