Disc Partition problem

I am trying to partition my HDD and want to install bootcamp, But when I am trying to partition my HDD its says that partition cannot be completed, some files cannot be moved. Need help!!!

This means either the Windows partition is too large or that the drive is fragmented and Boot Camp Assistant cannot allocate a contiguous space.  Here's the solution:
1. Get an empty external hard drive and clone your internal drive to the external one.
2. Boot from the external hard drive.
3. Erase the internal hard drive.
4. Restore the external clone to the internal hard drive.
Clone the internal drive to the external drive
1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
4. Check the box labeled Erase destination.
5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager appears.  Select the icon for the external drive and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
After startup do the following:
Erase internal hard drive
1.  Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your internal hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.  Do not quit Disk Utility.
Restore the clone to the internal hard drive
1. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
2. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
3. Check the box labeled Erase destination.
4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the internal hard drive. Source means the external startup drive.
Note that the Source and Destination drives are swapped for this last procedure.

  • HP pavilion g6-2005AX Hard disc partition

My laptop is new one which is HP Pavilion g6-2005AX. The operating system is Windows 7 Home Basic.
When I tried to do hard disc partition, it failed showing one warning "The operation you selected may convert the selected basic disc to dynamic disc.If you do so you cannot start the installed programs from any volume on the disc."
Then I called HP. They told me to create recovery discs from the "HP recovery manager window". They said that they will call after completing this. I have followed what they said and created 5 recovery DVDs. Now they are not calling. I tried to call them many times, but they are too busy.
Please help me how can I proceed to do the hard disc partition.

  • After creating partition, problems start

I use Boot Camp Asst. and create a 32 GB partition. at the end of the process, I'm told to "hit the Restart key or hold the power key for a few seconds." Since i have no restart key on my MacBook, I hold down the power key. Then the system turns off. I turn it on again, and reboot. I get an error - osx shut down unexpectedly, do i want to report to apple. whatever. the space i allocated on the partition is gone from my free space, but if I go into BCA, it doesn't seem to know that i've already created a partition. things are screwy and i have to reboot from the Leopard disk and use Disk Utility to repair the disk.
So, how do I get around this? I really want to use boot camp.

I have it all fixed (except that the Windows XP system won't completely shut down or restart into any startup volume...I have to hold down the power button until shutdown, then start by pressing the start button).
AppleCare tech, on two different calls, spoke of a bug in OS X (10.5.2) that is causing the partition problem described by me and others in this thread.
The solution (assuming that you don't have a Windows partition yet) is to install OS X (10.5.1). Don't do any software updates to 10.5.1 until you've completed the Windows install using Boot Camp Assistant.
    Remember to have backups.
I didn't exactly follow the solution directly. I reinstalled Tiger 10.4.11. Then I installed 10.5.1 as an upgrade. The reason for this is that I was not warned by AppleCare tech that a 10.5.2 install using "erase and install" would delete the entire iLife '06 suite. I lost iLife '06. That's why I reverted to Tiger before attempting the Leopard and Boot Camp installations.

  • IMAP Alternate partition problem

    IMAP partition problem
IMAP is set so all boxes are on a separate partition ..
    and until recently, worked fine.
one day (shortly after 10.4.9 upgrade)
after "rebuilding" an IMAP inbox from Mail.app
everything went down.. and came up again with all IMAP boxes other than INBOX appearing gone
but what happened is that all the accounts suddenly reverted (?) to existing on the default partition (var/spool/imap)
and although the alternate partition still exists and all settings reflect such..
I can't get the accounts back to seeing that partition.
cyradmn does not 'see' boxes on the alt partition.
thus, I cant retrieve some huge folders of stored mail.
in addition, the accounts are unable to create any folders on the current (default) partition and only "inbox" exists (no Sent or Drafts, etc..).
(the error returned : System I/O error)
mail works, can send and receive, .. but how to restore accounts to the alternate partition ??
Ive tried shutting off the account and deleting the user mailbox (on default partition) and turning back on the user.. still creates on the default partition
the accounts still show (in SA and NetInfo record) set to alternate partition..
and imapd.conf still has the partition entry ..
    what's up ??

    Thanks for the responses ..
yes, actually, I have tried reconstruct from mailbfr (options -o and -m) as well as via cyradm.. and SA
either option succeeds at reconstructing all the boxes fine, and permissions appear to be fine as well..
    drwxr-xr-x 4 cyrusima mail - 136B Jun 3 2006 mailstore
mailbfr reports both partitions being operated on ..
my config also appears OK, its the same as has been working flawlessly for over a year :
    admins: cyrusimap localadmin
    configdirectory: /var/imap
    partition-default: /var/spool/imap

    tlscommonname: mail.mydomain.com
    tlsserveroptions: use
    imapauthlogin: yes
    partition-mailstore: /Volumes/path/to/alt-partition
I did notice an odd thing though..
although the boxes are being read from /var/spool/imap
and accounts show "default" partition (in SA)
when I try to create a box (via Mail.app) in IMAP acct..
    it fails .. can't so it ..
    and the IMAP log shows
imaps[22176]: IOERROR: creating directory /Volumes/path/to/alt-partition: Permission denied
so it appears to want to write to the right place and can't ..
but still reads from the wrong place.
    something is amiss !!
    where to look next ?

  • Mac OS 10.4 can not recognize Mac OS 10.6 disc partitions

    Hi,
I am in a big problem, I already post it Western DIgital Comunity forum but I still not get a good answer from the forum or from WD support.
    http://community.wdc.com/t5/Other-Internal-Drives/WD7500BPKT-is-not-recognized-b y-MacOs-10-4/td-p/266338
Western DIgital state that 10.4 disk utility is compatible with the Advance Format and will format the disc.
I get a Wester DIgital WD7500BPK to make a triple boot disc on my MacBook Pro (MacOS 10.4, MAcOS 10.6 and other Linux distro).
    MacBookPro2,2
Intel Core 2 Duo  2.16 GHz
    WDC WD7500BPKT-00PK4T0
    Revision: 01.01A01
I sucessufull partition the disc with 10.6 and install SL but after booting from MacOS 10.4 original DVD, Disk Utility can´t see correctly the partitions created by MacOS 10.6
I already try to make just one partition with macos 10.6 and boot and try partition the disk with MacOS 10.4 but the disk utility is detecting a disc with 5.5.TB and it´s capacity is 750 Gb.
If I try to partions I get a input/output error.
I also try to boot from a MacOs 10.4.8 from a external drive and I get the same issue with Disk Utility.
Terminal diskutil give me the partitions that you can see in the image.
I will apreciate if anybody can give me some tips to partition this disc and be correctly recognized by MacOS 10.4 Disk Utility.
    Thanks in advance,

    Hi, BDAqua,
I was trying with 10.4.10 and this version still didn´t recognize the disc but after updating to MacOS 10.4.11 the system start to recognize correctly the disc.
I have to say that from MacOS 10.4 till 10.4.10 the disc was not correcty recognize.
In other words it was not possible to install directly from the system DVDs, unfortunatly the soluion will envolve other disc.
We need to install system and update till MacOS 10.4.11 in an external disc and then use CCC (Carbon Copy Cloner) to clone the system into the internal disc.
I hope that this post will help other´s with the same issue.
Thanks for your tip but now I am getting Airport issues with this version but that´s other story....

  • Lenovo G550 Service Partition problem

    Hello,
I've bought Lenovo G550 (without OS) and by mistake deleted my Service Partition, which contains files for OneKey recovery utility. I've searched forum, but hasn't found anything exact.
As I've searched, I've found out few things:
    - If I change any partition size, OneKey is no longer working
    - Only service support can fix this problem, in some countries I've gotta pay
I'd like to ask you for help. If there is any chance to DIY (do it yourself), just by downloading needed files and creating new partitions with required space.
I'd really appreciate if someone was there to assist, or just providing some more information about this problem.
    Sorry for my English.
    Thanks a lot !

there are about 113 backup wsi file, the one with number 34 seems damaged. for factory backups there's another issue with it. did you make any changes on volumes? cause if you did, one key recover and one key recover button will stop working.
in normal circumstances, eisa part is not visible. i'm not sure if it works if you copy files to usb.
if windows vista installed, run one-key recover 6.0.
already got backups, skip "back up" otherwise click that.
select full backup, quick compression and next >
choose the path or leave it default and next >
    and start.
after back up ends, restart the application one-key recover 6.0
click "create recovery disc" and next >
select the backup you have and next>
this screen will tell you how much cd or dvd you need, min 2 dvd or 8cd, max 7 dvd or 28 cd. and next>
insert the blank cds or dvds into driver and wait until done.
you may need the system image, you can lose your back-up cd, or cds may not working after a while, so , i still recommend that you keep the original copy or more than one backup.
size of recovery cd depens on how much size of disk space you use. its up 2-7 dvd or 4-28 cd.

  • An ext2 partition problem on install & multiple swap

I'm installing Arch on a second machine.  This one has 2 scsi drives.  I set up a /boot partition at /disc0/part1, had it formatted as ext2.  I put a swap partition on this drive.  This is marked bootable.  The rest of the partitions are reiserfs.
I installed grub into /disc0/disc, which I understand is the MBR.
When the machine reboots after installation, I get an error:
fsck.ext2:  No such file or directory while trying to open /dev/discs/disc0/part1
/dev/discs/disc0/part1:  The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2 filesystem.
It goes on to suggest running e2fsck.
Since I originally posted this I ran knoppix on the machine, checking with Qtparted shows that the partition is fine, all the files that should be there are there.
    1.  What am I doing wrong?  I know I don't technically need a /boot partition, and if it comes to that, I'll do without, but don't understand  why that would be the problem.
    2.  I've read that performance is better if you have a swap on each drive if more than one.        How do I create the second swap?  I've created a partition for it, but don't know how to mark it as swap.

    Ok, let me elaborate:
From the error messages you get it seems that grub successfully boots the kernel but the kernel fails to find your filesystem/swap partitions. This can have several reasons but the non-existence of the appropriate device nodes in /dev seems to be the problem in your case.
In your /etc/fstab the filesystem and swap entries are probably configured using devfs-style names, because that is what the Arch installer does set up.
    E.g. /dev/discs/disc0/part1 for /boot and
    /dev/discs/disc0/part2 for /
    etc. ymmv
Now the point is that these entries do NOT exist by default, devfs or udev have to create them, usually they are symlinks to traditional entries like /dev/hda1 or /dev/hda2 (or the other way round, in case of devfs).
Now, if you are using neither devfs nor udev you won't have the proper devfs-style device entries in your /dev directory and that's causing to kernel to hickup because he simply cannot find the discs you tell him to mount. Normally you configure grub/lilo to tell the kernel which partition he shall use as / (thats the root=/dev/whatever option for the kernel)
Therefore you MUST run either one of devfs or udev to see the proper device entries. If you are using neither then you will have to adapt your /etc/fstab and /boot/grub/menu.lst or the kernel won't be able to mount the filesystems nor be able to activate the swap partitions.
As Arch Linux 0.7 does NOT install udev by default you will either have to use devfs (this is done by NOT using the devfs=nomount option) or install udev (then you'll probably want to set the devfs=nomount option).
    Cheers,

  • Boot camp partition problems. What to do?

    Hello guys !
I really need some help ! Im a totally amateur with mac and still pretty new to it and anyways and im pretty noob with these things, so dont go harsh on me.
So I have bootcamp, windows 7 installed in my macbook pro retina 15' and everything was good, untill I tried to resize the partition of the boot camp!!! I had only 4gb available on the windows so I wanted more space. I went to the disk utility and created some space for the windows by shrinking the mac's hard a bit and then switched to windows and tried to do it by a program called '' AOMEI Dynamic Disk Manager'' and the machine restarted and everything seem to go well untill  almost at the end of the installation the problem occured some kind of an error I dont remember anymore and then I restarted my computer and pressed the alt button and I had still there the windows option the available, but when I enter it nothing happens and then occurs text '' system operating file missing '' ??? So what can I do? Have I lost all of my files that were on windows 7? is there anyway to get them back and if so how? Please guys I really need help, I have very important files that I need ASAP !!! I might lose my job, if I will lose them, so please help me ! I havent done any back up to the windows? Is there anything I could do anymore to get the partition and the files back? I tried to repair the partition from disk utility, but this what happened :
Verify and Repair volume “disk0s4”Checking file system** /dev/disk0s4
Invalid BS_jmpBoot in boot block: 46fa80
Volume repair complete.Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.Error: Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files.
Please guys help me out ! what can I do? I tried to google something but really couldnt find anything,
    Thnx for u in advance!

You have to install the drivers yourself with either a 10.6 install dvd or from a download choice when starting the Boot Camp installation.
After installing Windows, install Mac-specific drivers and other software for Windows using your Mac OS X installation disc.
The Mac OS X disc installs drivers to support Mac components, including AirPort, built-in iSight camera, the Apple Remote, the trackpad on a portable Mac, and the function keys on an Apple keyboard.
The Mac OS X disc also installs the Boot Camp control panel for Windows and the Apple Boot Camp system tray item.
    OR
If you can’t find the CD, DVD, or external disk with the support software you downloaded, open Boot Camp Assistant and download the software again.
You can quit the assistant after you save the software without creating a new partition.
Insert the CD or DVD or connect the external disk with the Windows support software.
The installer may start automatically. If it doesn’t, do one of the following:
If the support software is on the same USB flash drive as the Windows 7 installer, double-click the setup.exe file in the WindowsSupport directory.

  • Disc installation problem

I am trying to install a program on my Macbook Pro OS X 10.8.2. I am using a Disc, the program is EZDrummer. The mac reads the disc and goes through the installation and says that the installation was successful, but then the program is no where to be found, even in the location that it says it would be installing it. I was going to uninstall and reinstall, but when I went to uninstall I get an error message that the the uninstaller quit unexpectedly. I tried reinstalling but I have the same problem. What do I do?

Make sure the erased drive is partitioned Apple Partition Map.  GUID won't work for PowerPC Macs.

  • Windows Partition Problems

I have been trying for two days now to install Windows onto my MBP via Boot Camp with varying degrees of success. I wouldn't say the installation part is necessarily the problem, however. I set up a Windows partition through Boot Camp (25 GB) and installed Windows XP onto said partition. Once it's all up and running though, my partition appears to be practically full, despite the fact that by this point I haven't even installed the Windows drivers as provided on the Leopard install disc. Has anyone else run into this problem and have any solutions? Any help would be much appreciated.

Using the Option key to get into OS X? when you do, be sure to set control panel Startup Disk to your OS X volume.
Still has trouble? then zap pram/nvram with the old 4-finger command option p r thru 2 restarts (and starting from a cold boot).
I was under the impression (and some have used Disk Utility to erase their FAT partition to HFS+) that you hadn't removed it with BCA which may have left some nvram boot argument (maybe Apple should warn to "set startup disk to OS X" though in order to delete/remove you have to have booted into OS X anyway...
If it is no longer showing in Disk Utility, its gone, though sometimes you don't recover all the disk storage it used.

  • How can I make a hard disc partition?

    Dear sir/madame,
I have a mac OS X leopard with one partition and I want to upgrade to Lion, I have an external hard disc and I am always making backup on it, so is it safe to upgrade my system without copying all my data to the external HD?
And if I make a new partition on my system and put all data I need on it, then I install the Lion on the other partition, will the data be deleted?
    With thanks in advance,,,
    Nadim

It is always recommended that you have a complete and up-to-date backup of your system disk before doing a major upgrade like Lion. Although it should go smoothly, you never know when there might be a problem. And that is no matter what kind of computer you use.
You can use Disk Utility on your Mac to partition a hard disk. But I don't know if it can do it without erasing the disk. Older versions always erased the disk, but newer ones might not. Regardless, once again, the recommended practice is to have a complete and up-to-date backup of any disk you are going to partition.

  • Sd card partition problems

I have an Hp Envy laptop (Product number: E1P05AV). I recently partitioned an sd card I had so I could boot a recovery disc from it. It turned out that the boot menu didn't even have it listed. I know I didn't do something right with that, but that's not the problem. I decided to scratch that idea and return my sd card to normal. I used diskpart in the cmd to clean it of its partition. It worked and the sd card was back to unallocated space again, but something wasn't right. Whenever I would put the sd card in the slot, it would offer to format it. When I would go to format it, it would say that it couldn't complete the format. I found out that I couldn't use the sd card on my computer unless I redid the partition again. I can't even use another sd card unless it has the same partition properties as the first one. It's like the volume itself is stuck in the sd card slot. I hope this makes sense because it's hard to explain. It would be gratefully appreciated if someone could help me resolve this. Thanks in advance.

    Good Morning cck979,
    Thank you for your patience.
    SD Association
If you go to the above site and type format SD cards in the search bar you will locate a link to a formatter designed just for these cards.  This may help to alleviate the issue.
If that doesn't work, try this in command prompt as Administrator:
    1. Diskpart
    2. List Disk
    3. Select Disk 1 (Replace 1 with number reflecting your SD Card)
    4. clean
    5. create partition primary
    6. active
    7. format fs=fat32 quick
    8. assign
Be sure to select the right disk number, you don't want to accidentally clean out one of your hard drives.
    I hope this has helped.

  • Disc partitioning?

    Hi,
I am supposed to receive my first Mac (iMac Duo) late this week and I still do not know how to start. My first question is whether it is a good idea to make a separate partition only for files like I have been doing in Windows. Since I am also planning to install Parallels or VM Fusion, I need to think above all at a good back-up strategy. For example, backing up Leopard and all application in one disk and files in a different disc. While in Windows I'll keep maintaining the current application/file separation, is it a good idea to do the same with Mac applications and files?
I Would be grateful for any advise since I want to start properly.
    Thank you

No, that would not be practical on a Mac.
To backup, you should invest in a external backup drive - they are cheap, and you will be able to use Time Machine to automatically backup all day long without touching a thing. It's one of the best new features of leopard.
WHen you install Parallels or VM Fusion (both currently have bugs and problems under Leopard) you will be prompted to create a separate partition for that program large enough for Windows and your windows-based programs. You do not have to prepare for that or partition anything in advance.
In reality - you will be better served with Boot Camp, already included in Leopard - it works faster and runs all your windows programs - both Fusion and Parallels remain limited in not being able to run graphics-intensive programs, nor most new games.
If this is your first mac, while you are waiting, go to the local Apple store and get a copy of the OS X Leopard guidebook, and the Missing manual "switching to the Mac" book. Those will familiarize you with the major differences between Windows and macs.
Personally -- I switched to a Mac about 4 years ago -- also thinking I would try to use some Windows programs when the first version of parallels came out. Within a very short period of time, I had ditched all Windows software and have never looked back.

  • HARDDRIVE PARTITION PROBLEMS

After installing a larger hard drive in an early 333mhz iMac, the new hard drive was set with 2 partitions by accident. One is 8GB, the other is 30GB. I can't boot from the 30GB and the 8GB is full. I need what is on the larger partition.
I borrowed an external harddrive but don't know what to do next.
How can I fix this problem?
    Thanks

Yes, that's correct. Then boot the computer from an OS X installer disc. After the installer loads select Disk Utility from the installer's Installer menu. After DU loads select the drive entry (the one with the mfgr.'s ID and drive size) in the left side list, then click on the Partition tab in the DU main window. Set the number of partitions to one (1) and adjust it for maximum size, set the format type to Mac OS Extended, then click on the Partition button. After the new volume mounts select the volume entry from the left side list, click on the Erase tab in the DU main window, set the format type to Mac OS Extended. If you are using OS X 10.3 or higher then click on the Option button and set the radio button beside the Zero Data option and click on the OK button. Now click on the Erase button. The formatting will take from 30 minutes to a couple of hours depending on the drive size and speed. When the process is completed you will have a drive with one partition.
Now, just so you understand. You will not be able to install OS X on that drive and use it in the 333 Mhz iMac.

  • Bootcamp and windows 8(partition problem)

I am trying to install windows 8 and until now with no sucess. The instalation by the bootcamp runs smoothly, but when I boot from the USB, start the instalation process on windows and it asks me what partition I want to install the windows, I try to choose the Partition 4: BOOTCAMP and it doesn't work. It says it's a problem because the partition is EFI and for installing windows it can't be or something like that
And if I don't press the Alt button, when the bootcamp finishes the instalation and reboot the mac, it goes to a black screen where said that I don't have any boot devices connected and to connect one and press a key.

I believe you are supposed to format the partition labeled BOOTCAMP to NTFS from the installer. It is stated in the BootCamp suport guide.
