Discoverer vs. BO vs. Cognos

Is there any comparison between Oracle BI tools (10g) and Cognos, BO BI tools?
Please mail me [email protected]

You could try getting in touch with your Oracle sales represntative to provide competitive literature against BO and Cognos. We do not place competitive literature on our public web sites, nor do BO and Cognos.
If you have specific questions do post them here and I can try and answer them.
Thanks

  • Migrating Discoverer reports to Cognos

I want to migrate Discoverer 10g reports to Cognos. Please give me the steps to do this.

I've already searched a lot and not able to find any tool. You are right. But it could be very helpful if anybody could suggest some methods to achieve the goal. I'm trying to convert the .eex file into .xml format, is their any tool or way to do the same. Like i want to export the metadata into xml format which i will try to import into Cognos.
    Please help.

  • Questions on Busines Intelligence Applications

    Hi
We are a site that uses Oracle ERP 11.5.10 moving to 12 within six months.
We are using Discoverer/XML Publisher AND Cognos.
Our plan is to build a data warehouse and I hear BI EE provides that out of the box across HRMS, Finance and Procurement Modules. (with the addon Products)
    Couple of questions:
    1. Could BI EE replace both Discoverer and Cognos in terms of functionality?
    2. Is the functionality of BI EE similar to Discoverer in that you can create custom end user layers and users can then write analytical reports on top of that with drill downs, drag and drop, etc?
    3. Anyone out there planning to move from Discoverer or Cognos to BI EE?
    4. Should we build a data warehouse (we are 90% data in Oracle ERP) or use the BI EE and extension products/ (HR Intelligence, Procurement Intelligence, etc)
Seems to me the obvious choice is to discontinue Cognos and Discoverer and move to BI EE, as I understand this is Oracle's Fusion Roadmap?
    Cheers
    Iain

    Hi,
I'm facing some problem with Oracle BI Apps. The source for our data warehouse tables is Oracle E-Business Suite 11i. The ETL process got completed successfully for Financials 11.5.10 Execution Plan. But i can't see most of the dashboards(Most of them are showing output as No result). What ever the expalination gave in the Chapter 10 of Oracel BI Application Installation guide, i dont find the Mapplets or csv files (except parameterfileDW.txt and parameterfileOLTP.txt) which he asked to modify. Also how can we change the files file_group_acct_codes_ora.csv and file_group_acct_names_ora11i to see the data in dashboards. After the ETL process got completed i see some of the tables are left empty,
    ex: W_AP_BALANCE_F
    W_AR_AGING_INVOICE_A
    W_AR_BALANCE_F....etc.
Are you able to see all the dashboards for Finance. If yes, can you plz provide me the information of how to do this.
    Thanks,

  • Discoverer 10g and Cognos

Does anybody have any document outlining differences between capabilities between discoverer and cognos?
How effecting reporting tool is discoverer when it comes to OLTP reporting?
    Thanks

You should check with your Oracle or Cognos sales consultant. Depending on whom you ask you will get an answer weighted towards one vendor or the other :)
What do you mean by reporting? Discoverer is a tool that you can use for both adhoc querying as well as reporting. It also offers integrated reporting against both relational and OLAP data sources, leverages the Oracle database's analytic and BI platform capabilities, is integrated with the Oracle Application Server, offers a quick and easy way to create BI dashboards in Oracle Portal, is the only BI tool to be certified against and work with the the Oracle eBusiness Suite security model out of the box, and lots more...
Of course, if enterprise reporting capabilities are all you are looking for, then I would suggest you take a look at Oracle Reports and the just announced Oracle XML Publisher.
You should also check out product demos, white papers, presentations, documentations, etc... - all available on OTN. Some links are provided below. Finally, you could even try out the software - free (under a developer license), which is more than can be said about Cognos or other vendors that are too scared of letting people even try out their software without first purchasing it.
    Thanks

  • Limitations of Discoverer compared to Other Reporting tools

    Hi,
I need to evaluate the Pro's and Con's of Oracle Discoverer. Can u please tell me the advantages and disadvantages when compared to Business Objects, Cognos or any other Reporting Tool.
    Thanks, Prasad

    Hey Prasad.
Now there's an open question (ie: which is better, Ford or Chevy).
I'm sure this has been address on this forum before so you might want to perform a search for this subject.
However, dipping my toes in the pool ...
    1. Oracle is pushing Discoverer as an important tool in their repertoire. Future versions will now interface with XML Publisher (now BI Publisher), etc. so it's tightly inter-woven into Oracle. BO, Cognos, etc. are 3rd. party tools and therefore not tightly woven.
    2. If running Oracle Apps, then you can use the BIS views for pre-written views, Disco workbooks, etc. It's simply not practical to try to use BIS without Discoverer.
    3. Newest version of Disco (10g r2) now supports OLAP. Badly ... but it's a start.
    4. Oracle is really pushing the idea of everything being in the database and therefore they are pushing OLAP, DW stuff in the database along with your relational stuff. What this means in tools is that they're strongly pushing Disco with OLAP instead of a customer having to buy hardware, software (ie: Hyperion, Cognos, etc.), people (dbas to manage, software types to program), etc. and exporting your data from the Oracle database to a 3rd. party database to then report on. Again, Disco with OLAP (and someday if actual possible / practical) mixing your OLTP stuff with OLAP stuff.
    5. It's been awhile since I used BO and Cognos so not sure if their newest versions have the same idea of 3 versions (well 2 someday) where you create the report with Plus (or Desktop) and allow users to lightly manipulate (but not create) existing reports using a simple HTML browser (Viewer).
    6. Discoverer is a neat name as it sounds like you're stuttering ...
I'm sure they'll be lots of other reasons stated by others on this board, but if I was betting the farm on where to go, I would go with Discoverer if I had an Oracle installation. It'll cost you - and Oracle is definitely in it for making a buck or two - but if you're in for a penny with Oracle databases, etc., then you're in for a pound and using 3rd party tools that may do the same, less or even a bit more, never appeals to me as Oracle will either catch up and surpass them ... or let's be realistic ... buy them out! Like Microsoft, they've been doing that lately with a spare few billion dollars falling out of Larry's pockets.

  • End user functional difference between Cognos ReportNet -VS - OBI EE

    Hi all.
Are there any real difference Cognos ReportNet -VS - OBI EE from an end user functionality point of view? I have created a laundry list of end user functionality we are interested in and I can't see the differences. The end user functionality is implemented differently but they all seem to be there.
Thanks in advance for any help.

    Hi
I do believe your statement is correct in that there is little to choose between Cognos and BI EE. They both cost a lot of money too.
Personally I'm waiting on the interface for Discoverer to BI Publisher. When this comes out during the next few months we'll see Discoverer getting another boost.
    Best wishes

  • Is Oracle will continue with Discoverer

    Hi,
we are looking for a new BI reporting tool and our options are
    OBIEE
    Discoverere
    IBM cognos
    Microstrategy
but I think we should take out the discoverer from the list of candidate tools. What your suggest

    Hi Patrick
If I may add a comment here too. I think your statement about a 5 year plan is extremely valid and worth exanding upon. If we look back to 5 years ago, Discoverer was Oracle's flagship product because they had not bought Siebel at that point. At that time there were rumors that Oracle might purchase Business Objects but that came to nought. Then came the purchase of Siebel and Oracle suddenly found themselves with a tool they did not know anything about. They have done wonders with it since as many will agree.
What I'm getting at is that we don't know what the situation will look like in 5 years from now. Will Discoverer still be here? In all likelihood the answer to that will be yes, much to the chagrin of some who would love it tongo away to clear the field for OBIEE. What I see happening is a merging of the technologies with Oracle probably not making too many changes to Discoverer itself but opening up channels and links to the OBIEE toolset so that any investment will not be lost and making for migrations much easier. Today it is not easy to migrate from Discoverer to OBIEE and many companies have decided to stay where they are until such a migration path becomes available.
I am a consultant, as many people know, and my company has worked with 100s of Discoverer customers. I have companies on my books that have over 25,000 Discoverer workbooks. It would be impossible to rebuild those in any tool. Even allowing for the fact that you could get someone available full-time and they were able to rewrite 5 a day it would require 5,000 man days of effort. Not only is cost a factor but time too and Discoverer would need to be retained until all workbooks were converted.
Will Oracle make another purchase and change the playing field again? If history is an indicator of the future then the answer to this could be yes. So while you have to look to the future you cannot base your current needs on what might happen. If Discoverer fits the bill today then I would say use it but use it properly not in any half hearted manner. Likewise, if some other tool fits the bill better then that is the one companies should use but again they have to fully adopt it and use it properly.
    Hope this helps
    Best wishes

  • Open Pages from Discoverer Report

    Hi,
Is there a way to invoke a webpage or even better, an oracle function (that links to forms or self-service) from a discoverer report row ?
for example, I want a report for employees where the person looking at the report will click on the employee name and is taken straight to the person details page for that employee.
    Regards.

    Hi,
You can create a link to a form function using fnd_run_function.get_run_function_url. You can create a calculation either in a view or using a calculated item in the EUL (you will have to map the get_run_function_url in the EUL to do this). You then set the content type property of the EUL item to FILE so that when the item is selected in the workbook it appears as a hyperlink.
Most forms in apps except parameters so that you can pass the employee id to the form and the form will open up with the employee record. For example, if you are using a seed HR person form you create a calculation,
    fnd_run_function.get_run_function_url(3494      -- PERWSHRG-404
                                         ,800       -- HR
                                         ,fnd_global.RESP_ID     -- caller's responsibility
                                         ,0        -- Business Group
                                         ,         -- Parameters
         'P_PERSON_ID='||TO_CHAR(person_id, 'fm9999999999999')||
         ' P_EFFECTIVE_DATE='||TO_CHAR(SYSDATE, 'YYYY/MM/DD'))Rod West

    If NO then Why
    OR

  • Discoverer Report Row Total

We are running Oracle BI Discoverer Viewer version 11.1.1.4.0. When we upgraded to this version we lost some functionality. In the previous version the report displayed the number of rows the query returned. Now the row totals display only under certain conditions. For instance, I have a inventory report name INV-REP-120 and it prompts the user for 6 parameters & displays 6 columns of data. One of the parameters is named ‘Keyword' and I’ll use this one in the problem description. When I set the keyword parameter to ‘HINGE’ The bar at the top of the results sheet it displays:
    ‘Rows 1-25 of 81, Columns 1-6 of 9’
When I change the keyword to ‘TUBE’ the viewer displays:
    ‘Rows 1-25, Columns 1-6 of 9’
The total rows are not displayed but the number of pages. It appears that if the total number of rows is less than 200 then the row total is displayed. I changed the rows displayed from 25 to 100 and scrolled down to the last page and now the reports displays:
    ‘451 – 458 of 458, Columns 1-6 of 9’
When I use the key word TEE I get :
    ‘Rows 1-50, Columns 1-6 of 9’
There are 596 tees, which would be about 12 pages of 50 rows. I noticed that at the top of table there is a field ‘Page 1 of 5.’ It looks like if there are more than 5 pages it does not display the total number of rows.
There seems to be some interaction between the total number of rows the number of rows per page and perhaps a setup on the back-end that determines whether or not the row total is displayed. How can I configure the viewer at the front-end and/or back-end to consistently display the row total for a report? Is there a Discoverer preference located in the pref.txt in the apps server that controls this?

    Hi,
You can inform to your SP to edit the table EUL4_documents
and ask him to modify the name of the report that is stored in the column DOC_NAME .There is absolutely no necessary to open the work book that is stored in the database and change the work book name

  • Discoverer report not working on R12 !

We have just migrated to R12 from 11i and some of the discoverer query is not working, but the same is working fine when we ran thru SQL Developer or TOAD.
Is there any context (mo_global.set_policy_context) needs to be set in Discoverer report to get the data?
    Thanks

    Thanks Srini,
There is no any specific error message, the strange thing is if I run the Discoverer report is not returning any data, but if I set the mo_global.set_policy_context ('S',111) in SQL Developer or TOAD and then run the discoverer report it return data...
    Any pointers?

  • Discoverer Report parameter based on subquery

i need to have sysdate as parameter in my report. I want data based on the date i provide.
how can i make this as an parameter?

    Hi Prashant,
Subqueries are not Supported in Conditions..As of Disco Plus Rel 10.1.2.54.25
    A plausible workaround can be:
    1. Create a View with foll. Query
create or replace view TEST_VIEW as
    select hpah.EMPLOYEE_NUMBER emp_no,hpah.FIRST_NAME,hpah.LAST_NAME,hpah.PERSON_NAME,
    --hpah.JOB_NAME,hpah.ASSIGNMENT_ORGANIZATION_NAME,
    hpah.ASSIGNMENT_TYPE,hpah.USER_ASSIGNMENT_STATUS,
    SUBSTR(pj.name, 1, instr(pj.name, '.', 1, 2) -1) job_code,
    SUBSTR(pj.name, instr(pj.name, '.', 1, 2) + 1) job_title,
    (select haou.ATTRIBUTE1 from hr_all_organization_units haou
    where haou.ORGANIZATION_ID = hpah.ASSIGNMENT_ORGANIZATION_ID ) Function,
    (select haou.ATTRIBUTE2 from hr_all_organization_units haou
    where haou.ORGANIZATION_ID = hpah.ASSIGNMENT_ORGANIZATION_ID ) org_desc,
    SUBSTR(hpah.ASSIGNMENT_ORGANIZATION_NAME, 1, 6) dept_code,
    SUBSTR(hpah.ASSIGNMENT_ORGANIZATION_NAME, 7, LENGTH(hpah.ASSIGNMENT_ORGANIZATION_NAME)) dept_title,
    hpah.GRADE_NAME,hpah.LOCATION_NAME,hpah.SUPERVISOR_NAME,
    hpah.PERSON_START_DATE,hpah.ORIGINAL_DATE_OF_HIRE ,
    hpah.SALARY_BASIS,hpah.BUSINESS_GROUP_ID,hpah.ASSIGNMENT_ID,
    decode( hpah.SALARY_BASIS, 'ANNUAL', ppp.proposed_salary_n,
    'HOURLY', (ppp.proposed_salary_n *2080),
    ppp.proposed_salary_n
    ) salary,
    sysdate run_date
    from
    hrfg_person_assignment_history hpah ,
    per_pay_proposals ppp,
    per_pay_bases ppb,
    per_grades pg,
    per_jobs pj
    where hpah.ASSIGNMENT_ID = ppp.ASSIGNMENT_ID
    and hpah.SALARY_BASIS = ppb.PAY_BASIS
    and hpah.BUSINESS_GROUP_ID = ppb.BUSINESS_GROUP_ID
    and hpah.GRADE_ID = pg.GRADE_ID(+)
    and hpah.JOB_ID = pj.JOB_ID (+)
    --and hpah.EMPLOYEE_NUMBER = 100779
    order by hpah.EMPLOYEE_NUMBER
    2. Create another table say TEST_TAB
    create table TEST_TAB (emp_no, start_dt) as
    SELECT hpah2.EMPLOYEE_NUMBER , MAX(hpah2.PERSON_START_DATE) PERSON_START_DATE
    FROM hrfg_person_assignment_history hpah2
    GROUP BY hpah2.EMPLOYEE_NUMBER
    3. Add both of them in Disco Admin and create a join between TEST_VIEW.emp_no and TEST_TAB.emp_no
    4. Bring both these Objects in a new report in Disco Plus
    5. Create a New Parameter (Base it on PERSON_START_DATE Col of TEST_TAB)
    6. Choose Option Create Condition with operator <=
    7. Checkmark "Require User to Enter a Value
    8. Execute Report
I believe this should work. Either ways let me know if it helps or u get another workaround. (This scenario looks quite interesting)
    Thanks,
    Chinmay

  • Discoverer Report Slow

    Hi All,
I have a problem wherein some specific users are saying that the report is slow at their end.
The exact issue is...we have Discoverer Report present at the US server. Now we have 2 sites CANADA and US from where this report is run. Both sites refer the same server i.e. the US server.
Canadian users are reporting performance problems with this report, but when I run the report at my end there is no such problem.
Please advice what can be the probable reason for this.
    Regards,
    Ankur

    Hi Ankur
Further to what has been said, if you are running Discoverer Plus across a long time it will take longer to run. Typically the query runs within the database but everything else, formatting, layout, page items and so on is done locally by the Java applet in your local cache. What happens if you run a CANADA report from the US site? Does it run ok? If so, then therein lies the answer. The machines in Canada need to therefore be as powerful as you can make them plus your network needs to be as fast as you can too.
Another way way I have seen this solved is by providing something like a Citrix server in the US for the Canadian customers to log into.
    Best wishes
    Michael

  • Discoverer report link

    Hi guys,
I have created a link to Discoverer report in applications that works beautifully but there is one downside in it. When we invoike the report to launch in Discoverer Viewer it opens in the same browser window. Does anyone know how to make it open in a new browser window? I have looked into ICX: Discoverer parameters and other profile options but could not find anything pertaining to that. Also looked into Function parameters but seems to be missing it. Help, anybody!
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
Assuming your initialization matches your discoverer login, it is pretty weird that you get no data.
I am not sure how you got the SQL but i suggest you trace the session to get the exact SQL ran by the discoverer.
You may find another condition or join that limits your data.
Also another thing that you should try is to initial the session by using all the parameters (including the security group as you have in your discoverer login):
    begin
      fnd_global.APPS_INITIALIZE(user_id =>, resp_id =>, resp_appl_id =>, security_group_id =>);
    end
