Disk I/O errors within every two weeks

So here's my problem.
We've got 2 servers. First one is the Open Directory Master, iCal and Wiki Server.
The second one is the Replica of the first server. Also this is the server that has the homefolders.
Every night i make a backup of the homefolders to the first server.
Now for the homefolders we have a separate 500GB disk within our Xserves. Both servers have this. Straight out of the factory.
Now the problem is that randomly within every two weeks the homefolder disk gets Disk I/O errors.
The stupid thing is that the Finder thinks it's Okay until you try to do something with the disk.
Now this mostly happens around midnight.Right after the log files changed.
It's also easy to undo: restart the server or remount the disk. Now are both things a little hard to do with servers in production.
But when you do and check the disk using all the tools you know you can't find something wrong with it! They're fine!
But when this happens at midnight and I still haven't fixed this before our editors come in; we have a problem. Because they can't log in.
Now in order to solve this i had to write a script that tries to make and delete a folder on this disk.
If that's possible we make a backup. And if it's not.... reboot the server. Yeah you read it all right.
I have to reboot the server!! I mean come on Apple!!
Are we to take Leopard Server seriously this way?
There is no way that this is acceptable for a server! So here is my plea: "Apple please make a better system." 10.4 was so stable why not use that knowledge and use it in Leopard?
Both servers are running 10.5.1. Both servers have the very same problem.
I'm hoping that 10.5.2 will fix this problem. But i first have to get a service window.... see apple that's normally the time to reboot a server!

I'd be looking to swap in spare disks -- long before writing a script for this. This could be a thermal condition, or it could be a block-level error, or bus or who-knows-what upstream of the disks. But the first culprit in the line-up here is usually the spindle. And yes, this could be some sort of a software fault.
Modern disks do not last forever. Far from it. Disks fail. They go catatonic. They go off-line. They loose blocks.
And since this is a production environment (based on all of what you're saying here), do look at implementing RAID for your storage. (My usual preference is RAID-10. I tend to avoid RAID-5.)
For system monitoring, if Server Admin or some simple fast coding stuff can't deal with detecting and propagating an error notification, a management package such as [Lithium|http://lithiumcorp.com> might be in order.
But right now, swap the disk. Isolate the error. Protect your data. Then (if the lock-up is not cleared up) start looking at the software stack.
Do move to RAID, regardless. And do ensure you have good archives of your data, as RAID targets data accessibility and not data archival requirements.

    I've added a calendar event to repeat every two weeks, but it repeats every day.  The original event was set up for all Day on Wednesday, Nov 5.  Setting up for a single  day worked fine.  Add the repeat option and select every two weeks...and it shows up every day until the end date.  I've re-booted the phone and tried other start dates.  Same result.  This is in the base iPhone calendar.  No other calendars have been installed.   iPhone 6  iOS 8.0.2.  Any suggestions?

    Found a workaround:
    Just change each attribute 1 item at a time.
    Create the calendar entry for one day only with no other settings.
    Go back in and edit it so that its every two weeks, then leave and confirm this worked.
    Open calendar back up and add in the end date.
    That's the only way I could get it to accept those settings, one attribute at a time.
    Misc. bug I suppose.  I miss the "It just works" days.  Living in silicon valley, the QA engineering buds I have at apple go on rants about the undisclosed/undiscovered but known bugs in ios every time we're having drinks.  From what I hear, internally IOS8/8.1 weren't ready for prime time push just yet.

    Hi, My WRT54G works fine but about every two weeks I have to reset it (unplug the power cord wait 30 sec. and plug it back in) to get it to connect to the internet or get emails. I believe it is Ver. 8.2
    Any ideas why, other then that its works fine, I don't want to mess it up, I'm not great with computers.

    Try upgrading the firmware on the router.
    You can find some info here.
    After upgrading the firmware, Reset the router. Press the reset button on the router for 30 seconds. The Power light will start flashing. Turn the Router and the Modem OFF. Turn the modem ON first, wait for 10 seconds, turn the router ON, wait for 10 seconds, you should be ONLINE with a reliable connection !!!

    Every two hours or when I start/stop a service via Server Admin.app or the 'serveradmin' command line tool, I get this in my system.log:

    If I start/stop a service, I also get this in addition to the above error:

    I have an '08 Xserve running 10.6.7 Server, which was done from a clean install, running these services:
    Address Book
    AFP
    DHCP
    DNS
    Firewall
    FTP
    iCal
    Mail
    OD (running as an OD Master, not bound to AD nor any other external directory)
    Push Notification
    Software Update
    VPN
    Web
    OD is not set to use SSL, however using it (with a self-signed cert) doesn't make a difference, the same can be said for other services. Everything is up & running, I can authenticate using Kerberos, and for all practical purposes the server is fine, but that doesn't explain the error. Anyone have an idea? Thanks in advance.

    System Preferences/Energy Saver - check to make sure Wake for network access isn't checked.

  • Why does my I Mac crash about every two weeks or less?

    This has been an ongoing problem and I will be as consice as possible. About three years ago my beloved 27" Mac hit the floor. I had it repaired by a local technician who replaced the hard drive. All was fine for about eight months and then it began. Slowly, one by one little things would stop working such as certain apps would quit not to be reopened again, I Tunes would freeze, the computer would forget my bookmarks, and after about three days of this I would shut down in an attempt to reboot and that would be the end. Once shut down The computer would produce a progress bar upon starting, this would last for less than ten seconds and the computer would shut off. After repeated attempts to restart I would be forced to use "time machine" to get me Mac back. This takes hours as I have about 675 GB on my one TB drive. I have had to do this at least thirty times in the past year alone. I have to use the Lion OS on dvd in order to do this. The pattern is the same every time, at first upon restoring everything works absolutly perfectly and then after a few days slowly but surly, one by one little quirky things begin happening again until a repeat performance. I don't dare install any updates which require restarting my computer because once shut down there will be no restarting. I have posted on this site time to time with my various little issues but always ended up restoring with time machine as my only solution. Does this sound familiar to anyone who could passibly offer some much appreciated input? Many thanks and happy holidays. Sincerly, Sam Del Russi.

    I took my computer to the apple store and they tested the hardware for a week and they did replace the power supply but said they could not find anything else wrong and that the ram was ok too. They said the stressed my computer to the max and could not produce the errors that I could do be sizing a 2mg photo.I've been trying to get this fixed for months.
    One apple tech said that the error message when he saw it crash said it happened in Quartz? I think thats what it was. They reinstalled my OS to an earlier version and thought that might fix it until Adobe came up with a fix. When I got home I found they installed the wrong version of OS. They walked me through a few downloads to put my computer on 10.6.6 they thought the10.6.7 was the issue but its not.

    Restored my iPhone 6 from my 5C back in September and I have reset my phone so many times because eventually the music on my phone will first show with no artwork and won't sync then eventually stops playing and becomes other which is a huge 48gb!     I would suggest reinstalling iOS and setting your phone up as new, then syncing your music across with the rest of your data, but don't use the back up, you will lose some data but its the best way, it sounds like something is corrupt in your back up. If that fails take it to an Apple store and let them check your phone out in case it has a hardware issue.

    I have been asked to automate the email reminders to users (every two weeks) from the SharePoint2010 solution.
    I am trying to achieve this via workflow ,but am unable to get the results.
    Req :
    Twice a month the users should get an automated email reminder for a specific task.
    1. On 14th (or last working day in mid month -1) of the month. ( a field "mid month end" captures the date as 15th of the month)
    2. On last working day - 1 of the month. ( a field "month end" captures the date as last day of the month)
    Please let me know how i can achieve this via Out of box functionality. I donot have exp with workflows so a detailed steps guidlines will be very helpfull.

    Although you can start a workflow and then pause it for a number of days, I'd feel uncomfortable with that. If the farm crashes, who guarantees that the paused workflows will pick up where they were left off?
    SharePoint does no offer to run a workflow on all items in a list/library -- which I feel is a big draw back. 
    The good news is that there is a free 3rd party tool that can run a workflow on all (or specific) items in a list or library.  It's called the
    HarePoint Workflow Scheduler and I love it.
    You can create a view that shows the items that you want to run the workflow on.
    Or, if you know how to write CAML, you can feed the CAML Query right into the HarePoint Workflow Scheduler task. 
    At my company we have several sites in production that use the HarePoint Workflow Scheduler with a view. 
    So, first, create a SharePoint Designer workflow and define it to run manually.
    Then use the HarePoint workflow scheduler to define a schedule.
    You can define a schedule for the HarePoint tool, like every day, month, week, etc., by just clicking a few boxes. 
    Since this functionality does not come out of the box with SharePoint 2010, this free tool is a real gem.

    In iOs, the options are limited and do not include every 4 weeks. You can't, other thatn creating multiple entries (say two that each repeat every two weeks).

    My WRT610N rev 2 at aproximately every two weeks freezes and provides no DHCP or routing services fopr my network.  I need to turn off the router and reboot the devices, typically more than once, to get it working again.  There is no firmware updates that I can see.  When it freezes you cannot even ping the device although its activity lights are blinking.

    Open the router setup page and under the Setup tab,reduce the MTU value to 1400 and click on save settings.Power cycle the router and check.

    If you've been calling Mac Support every two weeks, they would have a record of your problems.
    As the other posted has suggested, if there is a hardware problem, it should be under warranty, and Apple should repair/ replace if for you.
    Assuming that Apple Support considers this a hardware problem, I'd entrust my computer to them to fix it for you.

    what do you mean by "run custom class"? If you mean calling methods of that class then no. But it is easy to write a simple report which will call required methods.

  • Disk I/O Error on Windows 7 x64

    Hi,
    I am recieving the Disk I/O error as of last week.
    I have looked and tried all explanations on here: quitting and restarting skype, deleting the bits-and-bobs you're told to delete in the appdata folders, and uninstalling/reinstalling and updating to the new version of Skype.... NOTHING works!!
    I haven't made any recent changes to my computer (to my knowledge).
    I am running Windows 7 x64
    Please help.
     

    Thank you so much for your help ruwin  I also kept getting the "Disk I/O error". It only started happening tonight. I had read other things to do - tick "show hidden files, folders, and drives" which I already had ticked. I uninstalled and reinstalled skype. This also did not work. Luckily I found your comment, and it worked! I tried deleting the DbTemp folder, but when I logged into skype it still came up with the error. So I uninstalled my version again, and installed the older version like you said. So thanks heaps, I now have it working again on my laptop. I guess it was just the update, as I had the 6.9 something version on it. I knew it wasn't a problem with my actual "Skype", as it still worked on my iphone. So I figured it had to be a problem with the laptop version. You just saved me a visit to the computer shop  Thanks again!

My husband got cancer and I couldn't afford the extra devices we got on Black Friday so returned them within the two week period and are now being billed $280 in extra fees plus tax?     One more quick thing first. Hold the SHIFT key this time as you startup and see if that gets you any further (this is called 'Safe Mode' by the way). I'm not too confident that this will work in your case but it's worth a try. If it boots up, go into Disk Utility and repair permissions.
    If it doesn't, you're going to have to do an Archive & Install which will install a fresh copy of the OS over the top BUT keep all your users, files and apps in place.
