Disk images from NFS on 10.4 "may be damaged" on 10.5

Disk images (.dmg files) created with hdiutil on OS 10.4 mount with warnings on OS 10.5. BUT - only if the source directory was on an NFS file system.
Specifically:
On OS 10.4.11, I can run:
cd /path/to/nfs/directory
echo "hello world" > hello.txt
hdiutil create -srcdir hello.txt hello.dmg
Then on the 10.5 machine, I double click on hello.dmg and it says:
"The disk image you are opening may be damaged and could damage your system.
Are you sure you want to open the disk image?"
If I say OK, it shows me the hello.txt file I expect, but the warning is troubling.
Running verify in Utilities -> Disk Utility results in this output:
/ begin quote:
Verifying volume "hello.txt"
Checking Non-journaled HFS Plus volume.
Detected a case-sensitive catalog.
Checking Extents Overflow file.
Checking multi-linked files.
Checking Catalog hierarchy.
HasFolderCount flag needs to be set (id = 2)
(It should be 0x10 instead of 0)
HasFolderCount needs to be set (id = 16)
(It should be 0x10 instead of 0)
HasFolderCount needs to be set (id = 17)
(It should be 0x10 instead of 0)
Incorrect folder count in a directory (id = 2)
(It should be 2 instead of 0)
Checking volume bitmap.
Checking volume information.
The volume hello.txt needs to be repaired.
Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed.
/ end quote
Running 'repair' reports a similar error and fails.
Any ideas why this is happening?
Thanks.
p.s. Running the same hdiutil command on 10.5 results in a .dmg that doesn't give me a warning. The type of input file/directory (hello.txt vs a big directory full of files) doesn't matter, but the warning only comes up if the input file/directory was on an NFS filesystem.

I am having a similar problem.
I just updated clients to Leopard.
Xserve is still running Tiger.
Now clients cannot search files on the server.
Apple support said Tiger clients used "cat search" instead of spotlight.
Now that clients are Leopard, clients try to search with spotlight,
but Tiger Server cannot search with spotlight.
He suggested looking for a 3rd party cat search for Leopard clients.
Any suggestions?

  • Why suddenly unable to create a disk image from a CD?

I successfully created a disk image from a CD only 5 days ago. Now when I try to create a disk image from a CD (with Disk Utility) the Superdrive rumbles along for sveral minutes, while the progress bar indicates that it has reached the end of its progress.
Only after all that does a dialog box indicate:
"Unable to create "___.dmg"-Invalid Argument. "
I haven't added software but did upgrade to iTunes 6. Doubtful that could affect my abilty to create a disk image.
Would someone kindly shed some light on why this may be happening?
    Steve

Is it strange that this problem seems CD-specific?
Some CDs are copy-protected and some CDs are not copy-protected; so, no, it's not strange at all that you should be able to copy some CDs and not be able to copy others.

  • Creating a Disk Image from Compressor Fails

Hpefully some one can help me out here.
Here's whats going on and I've tried this on 2 different systems (iMac 24 inch OSX 10.9.4,Nvidia GeForce GT750M 1 GB,  3.1 Ghz i7 Processor 1 TB Fusion Drive, 16 gigs of ram & a iMac 27 Inch OSX 10.9.4 Nvidia GeForce GTX780M 4GB, 2.5 Quad-Core i7, 16 gigs of ram 1 TB Fusion Drive, both have the USB Super Drive from Apple connected to them)
Both are running Compressor 4.1.2. I'm trying to make a disk image from a Apple Pro Res 422 HQ Quicktime 29.97 DF (drop frame, NTSC) The file is big since it's HQ so it takes a while to compress. I'm using the Create DVD preset in compressor and choosing " When Done: Create DVD" then below that "Output Device: Hard Drive" Because I want to have a disk image for back up and future burning so I don't have to tie up any systems doing this again.
It get's the the very end where it has that disk burning icon come up on the dock and then a warning comes up saying that there was a "error making the disk" and then that's it. I want to be able to create a disk image. Old compressor (3.what ever) works great, takes a lot longer to compress things but at least I haven't run into this issue with it.
I've had my destination set to the internal drive's, external drives .... you name it I've tried to save it in different places. I've added a background picture, removed it, nothing seems to work ....
Please help and much appreciated if you can help me out here.
    Cheers

  • Disk Utility 'Disk Image from Folder' looses file create date?

    Hi,
I have been working on creating backups that maintain the files' create dates. I have found the following anomoly using Disk Utility.
If I create a Disk Image From Folder, the create dates of all files are changed to be the same as the last modify dates. Not what I want.
If I creat a Blank Disk Image, and then using Finder to copy the files to the Disk Image, the create dates remain unchanged.
I can then burn the backup CD's with the Disk Image and the files' create dates are maintained. So, future restore from the backup CD will contain the original files' create dates.
Does anyone know if Disk Utility's Create Disk Image from Folder is supposed to loose the files' create dates? What other file attributes are being lost? Mac OS X maintains all of these attributes, and create dates via Finder copies, I would expect the Disk Utility Create Disk Image from Folder to do the same.

To follow up on this post, I know at least part of the answer. The difference between the two becomes clearer if you read the documentation (man pages) for hdiutil and asr. Image 1 will be created in file mode, whereas image 2 will be in block mode, ie bypassing the file system. Image 1 will consist of a series of files, whereas image 2 will contain a series of blocks, mirroring the original layout of the hard disk.
Technically the latter should be faster to restore (in block mode), although Apple recommend the first procedure (see man page for hdiutil). I haven't seen any evidence that images created in block mode can be mounted or restored, although you might be able to burn such images to a optical disks if applicable.
As I've pointed out in another thread (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1508199&tstart=0) I believe that this functionality should not be offered in disk utility, and I consider it a serious bug.

  • Can't eject disk image from Finder in Mountain Lion

I just got a new MacBook pro. I'm running Mountain Lion (10.8.2). Any time I try to unmount an external hard drive or eject a disk image from the Finder, nothing happens (either clicking the contextual eject icon or right-clicking). The items in question are not in use when I try to eject them. I'm only able to do so with Disk Utility. Any ideas? I've repaired disk permissions but the problem persists.

I am having similar issues with my user account. It also is the same in Yosemite.
Disc images, external hard drives etc dragged to trash (get eject icon) are simply ignored.
Pressing Eject button in side bar of Finder are ignored.
It seems to be a permission/account issue as:
    - using computer under a different account doesnt have this problem
    - transferring account over to another mac continues the problem on the new computer.
Log file seems not to have any errors.

  • "Disk Image from Folder" from iPod

Using Disk Utility, I have tried to create a disk image of my iPod using the "Disk Image from Folder" option.
These are the settings I am using:
    Location of Image: Desktop
    Format: read/write
It asks for my password, and then it briefly is in the "Initializing..." phase (less than a second), and then it gives me the error 'Unable to create "MATTSH_IPOD" - internal error.'
What should I do? I tried creating an image from another folder, it works fine.
I can't create an image by device, because I won't have enough free space...
Keep in mind I am running a new MacBook Pro (yay). Also note that the iPod is formatted in FAT32.
    Any ideas??
Thanks in advanced for any help.

    Hi Matthew,
I don't own an iPod, but here's what I'd try:
    Quit Disk Utility.
    First, download and install TinkerTool.
Then in TinkerTool's Applications section, choose "Enable extended options when converting disk images".
I don't know if you need to logout/login at this point.
Now open Disk Utility and try the "iPod image" format.
Let us know if it works for you.

  • Disk images from CDs are always damaged

I'm not sure when this first cropped up, but it's been happening for a while now. Every disk image I make from a CD, seemingly no matter what disk it is, gets flagged as possibly being damaged from the very first time I attempt to mount it. I've tried several different disk types, all result in the exact same thing.
The images appear to be effectively identical, with files and even icon-location exactly the same, but they still flag the error. The only thing that I think changed when it started is that I have an old copy of Toast (I think 7), and whenever I make a disk image there's a line saying that it's reading Toast 4.1 HFS Optimizer. Could that be related, and if so, how can I get rid of it?

    Klaus1 wrote:
Most of us make CDs and DVDs from disk images.
Yeah, true. But where do you think those disk images come from in the first place?
As to the other two, I'm trying to make duplicates of many kinds of CDs. Games, videos, school (class-related) disks, etc, because carting around a dozen disks to make it through my day is just asking for some of them to snap or get huge scratches.
I'm attempting to make disk images through the Disk Utility.app, and that's been the source of the problems.

  • Disk Images from DVD-R

Today my attempt to make an image from a home-made (& finalized) DVD-R failed with an "input/output error", which was presented when Disk Utility had finished reading the DVD-R into memory. (The DVD does also play fine on this G5.)
I was surprised, as I've done this just once before with success.
Is it possible that this is in fact due to the recording mode originally used to make the DVD-R? I'm not sure whether I used SP (2-hour) or LP (4-hr) for the one that worked, but I do know that I had used LP for the DVD that I've tried to make an image from tomight. I don't really want to have to sit through all the tapes to make the 4 hours again onto two new 2-hr DVDs
Hopefully someone will know if this is the problem, in which case I shall resign myself to the task, but if there's any chance something else is at fault - well, I look forward to your advice!
    Many thanks,
    Blackie

Yes, I did finalize it in the Panasonic, thanks, Ron. However, I note that I did have some difficulty - it failed the first time, but was successful the second time.
When attempting to "create image", initially I left the format selection on whatever it defaulted to. I then tried again with read/write.
    I've just tried "replicating" your
issue (using a disc recorded from television on our
own Panasonic "standalone" in "LP" mode).
Brilliant, thanks - at least that clears that part of my question up
Any possibility that the disc you were trying to
copy from is slightly dirty or damaged? You might
want to simply repeat the attempt after giving the
    disc a gentle clean.
Ah, now this sounds worth following up, especially given my comment at the start... So, I shan't try using DVD master, but I shall try cleaning and having another go with the default setting.
As I understand it, my Toast Lite won't do DVD-Video, and I've not yet had a need for DVDxDV though I have heard many good things about it, for when I find I do have the need So in the short term, if I can get the process to work via Disk Utility for this one DVD, I'll stick with that
So, I have something to try before I mark my question as solved, but I think we are probably getting there!
    A thousand thanks,
    Blackie

  • HT3787 If you accidentally eject that local file (plain white disk image) from another user, can you get it back?

If you accidentally eject local file from mobile me from another user, how can you get it back? Or is it stored somewhere else????
My website was saved on there. And I need it!!
I didn't realize that was the idisk since mobileme has been gone for so long.

That's what I was hoping.  I use Time Machine to back up the entire computer.  But I'm assuming it was a disk image, and that wouldn't be saved on the backup?  Or where could I find it?

  • Unable to exclude VMware disk image from Time Machine backup

In Time Machine Preferences, I elected to exclude home\Documents\Virtual Machines folder in my home directory. Whether I use the "+" button to add the exclusion or dragged it in from Finder, the exclusion list only shows [Virtual Machine]. Coming from a Windows world, I am concerned that I don't see the fully qualified path for the "Virtual Machine" folder name. Even the folder property doesn't show the full path information. Since I do not exclude Documents folder, it is included in all Time Machines backup. Unfortunately, so is my home\Documents\Virtual Machines folder.
Question #1: What am I missing?
This question is related to this next issue.
Question #2: If I have a folder called "Users Guide" in addition to the built-in "Documents folder in my home directory, and they each contain the sub-directory "Preliminary", how do I tell Time Machine I want to exclude the folder \User Guide\Preliminary from TM backup?

Thanks for the tip. Hovering does show the path. Now the mystery is a little worst than before, and I'm back to trying figure out how to exclude the home\Documents\Virtual Machines folder (where he VM disk images are stored) from Time Machine backups while it's allowed to backup home\Documents (as intended).
When I get back home tonight, I'm going to try excluding some other sub-folders (which I created) of [Documents] from Time Machine while I allow [Documents] to be backed up. I'll post the results, and hopefully can ask a smarter questions.

  • Download virtual disk image from VM Manager

    Hi,
I want to make a back up of my virtual pc.
How can I download the virtual disk image that I see in vm manager?
    Thanks.

I agree with you 100 percent. I don't why on the world they keep revising distributions and requiring manual upgrades to get certain "bug" fixes. I hope they change this soon. Just seems so silly to me. I've been stable on 3.1.1 for months. I hate to even think of actually upgrading given this. I was lucky in that I stated testing with 3.0.1 and 3.1.1 came out during my testing. I would have hated to try to upgrade from 3.0.1 to 3.1.1 in a production environment.
I just ran a clean upgrade of the VM manager from 3.2.1 to 3.2.2 build 520 using MySQL. It went smooth. I do believe the "readme" details a bug fix associated with upgrading from 3.1.1 to 3.2.1.
Do a rescan physical disks from your VM server itself. Some people have had problems with servers rebooting doing this when there is I/O taking place on the server. Might want live migrate your guests before doing this. Rebooting should have cleared it once the Server synced with the VM Manager but the rescan from the VM Manager might get the server and the manager in sync.

  • Help restore disk image from firewire drive to new serial ata drive

Heres my situation I inherited a mac mini without the installation cd. I also have an imac with the oem installation disk. I made a disk image of the mac mini (10.4.11) with disk utility on to an attached firewire disk. I've ordered a new drive for the mac mini and want to lay down the 10.4.1 disk image and then upgrade to snow leopard. I boot with my OEM Disk (10.5) and go into disk utility and select the image for restore. It reports running time of 2 hours and shows progress but when I come back the cd seems to be thrashing and no matter how long I leave it it doesn't restore. What are my options here is it possible to use the 10.5 startup disk to restore an image file made by 10.4.11

Hi bgagew, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Cloning would be a far better way...
Get carbon copy cloner to make an exact copy of your old HD to the New one...
    http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html
    SuperDuper...
    http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/
    But...
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Tiger Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
Once DU is up chose the Restore option to restore/copy the Disk Image to the HD.

  • Cannot delete disk image from timecapsule.

I have two disk image's on my time capsule and one is for a computer I no longer have.  Therefore I wanted to delete the time-machine disk image.  I recently upgraded to Yosemite.
In order to delete I have tried the following:
Mounting the time capsule and dragging to trash.  Get a progress bar that says "deleting one file".  It sits there over night and does not delete.
Going into Time Machine, navigating to the disk image file, right clicking, and selecting delete back-up.  Asks if I sure and then does nothing.
Repeating the above with time machine turned off.
Disk Utility does not see the mounted drive.
Get Info on the drive says that I have no permissions and they are custom.
Tried some CHMOD commands I found on the internet and i got a series of error messages about CHMOD not possible.
If I double-click the disk image, I get a file not mountable error.
Time machine still works to back-up my current drive.
    Any ideas????
    Thanks,
    Tony

Yosemite is problematic to say the least.
Delete backups was pretty much as you have done.. but Yosemite has the networking ability of tin cans and a broken string.
There are other ways around the issue..
How do I delete a time capsule Sparse Disk Image Bundle
There is a post at the bottom with a new method using a program I have not used but worked well.
I have a post there near the top with the standard methods.
I have good success btw with a windows computer on the network.. windows seems to treat permissions with contempt.

  • Creating a disk image from an audio-disc???

Hello guys, I need to move residence and want to minimize the volume and weight I'll need to carry.
I wanted to create disk images of all my audio discs but apparently that's not possible (at least with disk utility, trying to use the same process used with software/movies discs). Is there any way to achieve this? Or, is there any other good way to store the songs in case I needed them later?
What I'd like to do is have them stored in my external hard drive in an uncompressed, unconverted format ready to burn them back, without any loss, to a cd playable with the basic cd players in case I needed them. Or to re-import them into a iTunes. And stuff like that.

I use Toast Titanium to do this. http://www.roxio.com/enu/products/toast/titanium/overview.html

  • Creating floppy disk images (from Disk Utility) recognized by Parallels

    Hi there,
After making the Parallels plunge last week, and installing a couple of my old OS's in it, I unearthed my old MS-DOS 6.22 disks. (remember that, boys and girls?)
With the help of my brother, I managed to export the contents onto a USB flash drive in the hopes of creating the necessary .fdd files that Parallels uses to create a virtual DOS machine.
(FYI - I already have DOSBox installed... but now with Parallels, I was looking to install the real deal)
Normally, renaming a .dmg file (created through Disk Utility) to a .fdd should force Mac OS to associate the image with Parallels, and thus allowing it to be recognized as a valid floppy image.
Unfortunately, this hasn't been the case for me. Parallels cannot recognize the disk images created as floppy drive images. Even after formatting the volume as both MS-DOS and MS-DOS (FAT 16), nothing seems to work.
I've already checked the Parallels forums, but couldn't drudge up anything. I was hoping one of the Level 3+'s here had some experience with this.
Am I missing something in the Disk Utility .dmg creation process of these files, or would I need a separate application to create a valid .img/.ima file to get this to work?
    Thanks!
    Steve

I am also having this issue. If I figure it out I'll post my solution. If anybody has had success it would be very helpful to know how they made proper images.
