Disk Utility frozen?

Hey all
Got a WD My Book and plugged it into my iMac 3.06. Not realizing that it was FAT formatted, I started moving stuff onto it... then realizing the 4GB file size limit that the Windows format has, I backed up my data and ran disk utility to reformat into MAC OS Extended (Journaled).
Took like 8 hrs.
1) Now, this morning neither it or the drive I have daisy-chained to it are showing up in my Sidebar - only in Disk Utility.
2) Also, the WD My Book has a name I didn't give it - disk1s1.
3) And last (but certainly not least) since these other problems were presenting themselves, I thought I'd try to Erase again - but using the 1st option (fastest) since I don't have any data on there. Getting the Barber Shop bar and a status message: newfs_hfs: /dev/rdisk1s1: partition size is not a multiple of 4K.
Is Disk Utility frozen or am I just impatient? The system doesn't seem to be frozen - I ran Activity Monitor and the program is responsive. Utilizing minimal CPU and Memory. Is it just getting ready to do something and taking a long time due to the size of the disk?
Help appreciated-

Ran Disk Utility again (since the disk was in Standby mode and nothing was happening) and tried to verify disk and it failed saying: "Filesystem verify or repair failed."
Ok, so what do I do to fix it?

  • Disk Utility "frozen" trying to format external drive

    some help please...
I've got a 120gb external USB/NDAS drive that was previously formatted in NFTS on a Windows XP machine. Using Disk Utility on my new MacBook, I attempted to erase it and reformat it using the "MS-DOS" option in Disk Utility (so I can use it on both OSes). I got the spinning beach ball for several hours, at which point I forced-quit Disk Utility. The drive is now unseen by Windows, and when I plug it into the MacBook, it tells me it can't be mounted, so I choose initialize. When I attempt to either erase or partition the drive for MS-DOS, I get the beachball. I left it overnight to see if it was just taking a while, and no difference.
What next? Should I try formatting it for Mac and then reformatting MS-DOS/FAT32 and see if that works?
    Thanks in advance...

I had a similar problem with an older drive, eventually I did get it formatted using my iBook, but it wasn't worth it as the drive failed completely several months later (at the most inconvenient time, of course). If the drive is older than 3 years it might be on its last legs and you would be better off to buy a new drive anyway.

  • I was erasing my Macbook pro using disk utility and it is frozen? Help!?

Ok So I was erasing my macbook to restore it using the disk utility. When I clicked erase it began the proccess. It has been stuck staying unmounting disk for a few hours now and the mouse wont move. I am afraid to restart it because I dont want to mess up the process and destroy my computer. Can someone help?!

    mac_daddy02,
if you’re trying to erase your Mac’s internal disk, what do you fear might be destroyed by interrupting the erasure?

  • Creating a Partition has frozen my Disk Utility!!!!!!!

I need immediate help...I was trying to partition a drive into 2 and clicked partition after I had set it up. It's been creating a partition map now for the past 30 minutes or so. The color bar at the bottom has not moved past the 1/4 way mark. What can I do? Somebody please help me????
    Thanks,
    Sean

Where's the HD? Internal, external? FW, USB, or both? What formatting selected. Paucity of information makes troubleshooting difficult.
Quit Disk Utility. Then try DU again. If it hangs, then quit DU, create a new admin user account, log into it, and try again. Report back with details.

  • DVD Drive dropping off grid, followed by Finder and Disk Utility issues

I'm having a very strange series of problems with my 8 core 2.8 MacPro.
A few weeks back I did a DIY repair/replace of my optical drive. For the last few months it was failing to open when the eject button was pushed. The drive would make a noise as if it was going to eject but it would take more and more time/tries to fully engage. After a few calls to Applecare and a few attempts of trouble shooting I got a replacement drive.
And now I'm having a whole slew of other problems and am at a loss as to what is causing them and how to fix them.
The drive ejects beautifully...for a while. But for some odd reason after an indeterminate period of time (by which I mean it's not consistently the same amount of time), the drive simply ceases to exist in the eyes of the computer. It will not show up in "About this Mac" (all that shows up is a blank screen when I click the "Disc Burning" section of "More Info"). It will not eject any disc that is in the drive (which shows up in finder sometimes...even if it can't be played by the DVD player application). It doesn't show up in Disk Utility.
In fact, after a while nothing shows up in Disk Utility. It gets frozen on "Gathering Disk Information" and doesn't show any of the hard drives (yet all of them show up in the Finder window and on the desk top).
And then the great grinding down of operations goes into full swing - sometimes the finder window won't open. Applications won't quit. Going to the Finder/desktop results in Beach Ball of Death. Yet I can force quit using the Dock. Sometimes I can shut down, sometimes I need to use a hard shut down using the power button.
I have rebuilt permissions. I've used Disk Warrior to rebuild/repair all disks. I've unplugged all external hard drives. And upon restarting, things will work...for a while...and then things start going wrong in a domino effect.
I haven't seen any pattern in regards to programs being used (it doesn't, for example, start after I launch any specific program.
Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated before I call Applecare again!
    Thanks

Thanks for the hard drive tip. I'll see if that helps...
Wish I could tell you what drive I have but today it didn't work upon start-up and I didn't realize it until I started to process/compress something.
Forgot to mention two other things...
    1) I did a virus scan and everything came clean
    2) This all started last week after coming home and doing an Apple automatic software update. Unfortunately I don't know what it was and not sure if it is linked, as I swapped out the drive right before I left for a long weekend (so only tested the new drive briefly)

  • Disk Utility Freezes When Verifying HD

Not sure what's gone wrong here--hoping you folks can help me out.
I wanted to make sure my OS X directory was in okay shape, so I tried to "verify disk" using Disk Utility. After a few seconds, the application becomes completely unresponsive. Activity Monitor shows the process as "Not Responding" in red. Attempting to quit the process locks Activity Monitor. Shortly after, the entire system is frozen.
I've deleted the preference files in my home folder, but that didn't change the behavior.
The same issue occurs in my mother's account.
I booted up from my install disc and tried to repair the disk. It failed with the error "The Disk 'Macintosh HD' could not be unmounted. I then clicked the "verify disk" button, and my disk "appears to be OK."
Any ideas what's causing this unusual behavior? I'd like to get things working as they should, if possible.
Oh, and this is my MacBook, running OS X 10.5.6. The Macintosh HD partition is 66.9 GB & 12.36 GB is free.
Just realized I haven't repaired permissions; going to do that now, then try again and see if repairing permissions makes any changes.

    DaddyPaycheck:
I'm running DU from my computer. It came with Leopard installed (I bought this computer last spring). If I'm running it from my computer, I should be running the latest version then, right?
    Carolyn:
*Are you referring to the com.apple.DiskUtility.plist?*
Yes, that's the one! I deleted it, then tried running DU to verify the disk again, but the same issue occurred--the application froze.
*"Oh, and this is my MacBook, running OS X 10.5.6. The Macintosh HD partition is 66.9 GB & 12.36 GB is free. 12GB out of 70 is cutting it kind of close. You really need to be in the 10 to 15% free drive space range minimally."*
If I've calculated things right, I should have about 10GB free in order to have 15% of my drive free. I know I'm cutting it a little close, but this is the best I can do, for now.
As mentioned in my initial post, I can't repair the disk. Disk Utility fails with this error: "The Disk 'Macintosh HD' could not be unmounted." The Verify Disk option does work, and comes back with the report of "The Disk appears to be OK."
I used BootCamp to partition my drive for Windows, so I can't repair the entire drive, just the "Macintosh HD" portion. S.M.A.R.T. status is verified.
I'll give the AHT a go after I get home from class later today. I'll also try the steps in the article you linked--thanks!
If you folks have more suggestions, let me know.

  • "Disk Utility can't repair"...

    Help!
My Macbook Pro 15" late-2011 has frozen and displayed the Kernel Panic screen atleast 5 times.
In Disk Utility, I've verified the disk and the boot partition and they were all "ok".
The final Kernel Panic required that I boot from the Recovery Disk (Apple-R) and go to Disk Utility.
Another Disk verification and repair led to a dialogue to "...reformat the disk".
So I reformatted the HDD and restored a Time Machine backup. After a few hours of working the exact same issue occurs and I'm back to the reformat the disk dialogue again!!!!
I'm planning to take this to Apple service center but was hoping that someone in the forum might understand the log file below and determine whether it is a hardware or software issue.

  • MacBook Pro failing to boot up despite disk utility repair and PRAM

Problem: MBP frozen on boot up screen with Apple logo and turning gear (which freezes after a while aswell)
Solutions attempted: disk repair via custom recovery- disk utility, PRAM
Device: MacBook Pro 15" (early 2010) running 10.9
    Additional info-
Never had any issue with the device and this seems to have happened all of a sudden. Installed an SSD a few months ago, and just realised the ssd did not have a recovery partition. However I connected my older hardrive via USB to access recovery which seemed to work fine.
NOTE: for the past few weeks, every now and then I was unable to power the device off and whenever this occurred, there seemed to be a few bugs (ie unable to empty thrash-error 50 and enable to increase/decrease volume/screen brightness). However, holding the power button and restarting it seemed to have fixed it.
Had the same issue but this time around MBP failed to boot up.
    Any possible suggestions?

Are you suggesting reinstalling the os?
    No.
Furthermore, is there a way to keep the data intact using this method? Or retrieve it at the least?
Repairing a disk should have no affect on the data, nor would an OSX installation.  However if the data has value, there always should be a backup, preferably two.
In your original post you said "attempted: disk repair via custom recovery- disk utility".  The term 'custom recovery' to me is alien and thus confusing.
What I am suggesting is a repair of the HDD using the original installation disk, not an OSX installation.
You insert the disk holding down the C key at startup.  Proceed with the process until you see on the top of the display a menu bar.  Select UTILITIES and from the drop down menu select Disk Utility.  Then select Disk Utility>First Aid and then run Verify and repair.  Exit from the installation process.
That way I know that the attempted repair was properly executed.  You may have in essence done that, but there is an element of doubt in my mind.
    Ciao.

About one month ago, my computer started getting very sluggish (ie, it would take forever to startup, would always freeze after sleep, etc.)  I lived with it for about two weeks, since it would always run quickly after waiting ~30 minutes after starting/waking up.  Eventually, this grew old.  I browsed the internet and did multiple suggested fixes (reset PRAM, run Disk Utility, ran in Safe Boot Mode, etc.).  Nothing seemed to work.  I opted to zero out the harddrive and reinstall Mountain Lion after making a backup.  That was about two weeks ago.
Everything worked fine, up until yesterday.  Once again, things started getting slow.  I decided to shut down my computer for the night and would check it in the morning.  When I turned it on this morning, it wouldn't startup correctly.  I could login, etc., but it was frozen and I couldn't open any applications without getting the spinning beach ball.  I waited about an hour, but it was still slow/loading.  I shut the computer down and booted it in Verbose Mode.  I ran the various commands to check the conditions of my disk, but when I ran the "fsck -fy" command, I got an "I/O Error."  I then tried rebooting my Mac, but it would get to the gray screen with the apple logo and the spinning wheel, and then the progress bar would appear.  Before the progress bar did anything, it would shut itself down.
I then started the computer up and directly went to OS X Utilities.  I went into Disk Utility and tried to check permissions and repair the disk.  Only this time, Macintosh HD was grayed out and seemed to be unmounted.  I couldn't get it to mount.  I went into the Apple Store to have them run their own diagnostics.  However, the apple store employee was unable to get the test working, so that was basically a bust.  At this point, the computer still didn't turn on.
I got home and, just for kicks, held the "N" key while booting up my computer.  For whatever reason, my computer started up (though it took a long time and there was a progress bar).  Now, I made another backup of my disk and am wondering what to do.  I ran Disk Utility again to repair my disk, but it says that Macintosh HD is not able to be repaired.  When I checked permissions, there were tons of Input/Output Errors.  Based on my research, it would appear that I have two solutions.
I can either purchase DiskWarrior and use that to try and solve my problem, or I could just get a new hard drive (and I would upgrade to a SSD or SSHD).  DW is about $50 if I just download it, and the hard drive would cost me $150 or so.  Since I don't know exactly what is wrong with the disk, I don't know if DW would be able to fix it.  That being said, if the hard drive isn't the problem, there would be no reason for me to purchase a new one.  I guess I would just like some advice, as to what you would do.  I apologize for the long post.
TL;DR: Disk Utility can't repair Macintosh HD.  Should I get DiskWarrior or a new harddrive?
    Thanks in advanced!

Most importantly, youve already backed up all the data.  All else is cake.
A new HD would cost you only $20 more than disk warrior,....theres no reason to repair a worthless crippled HD, .....new HD 1TB is $70.
Once you back up all the data on a failing HD, further diagnosis has no meaning,....not anymore.
Grab a 1TB  or 750GB  Toshiba/Hitachi (both used by Apple inside their Macbook Pro nonRetina,...both are made by Hitachi)  5400RPM SATA HD.
Forget the repair,.......repair only serves to bring a HD to a point of BACKUP.....since youve already done that, its now just wall art or trashbin fodder.
These are the same HD used by Apple in their Macbooks

In the future ALWAYS remember to have 2 backups for everything.  2 backups is 1, and 1 is none.
That way when something crashes (and they all do).....its no worries.

  • TS2570 Disk no longer recognized in disk utility

    Long story.
I updated OS X to Lion 2 weeks ago on my Mid 2009 13" Macbook Pro and everything seemed to be in perfect order.  3 days ago, when I opened the Macbook to check my email, the screen was frozen.  No problem right?  Just reboot.  The only thing on the screen that moved was the mouse pointer.  Everything else was frozen, dock, menus, everything.  So I had to do a hard reboot using the On/Off button.  On reflashing, the system rebooted back into the OS but with stock wallpaper showing on screen and an error message.  I couldn't tell you what the message was as it only happened once and I immediatly rebooted again as that is a part of what the error message said to do.
From that point onwards, I never even got the startup chime on reboot and the gray screen with logo and gear was the only thing showing.  So I tried to boot into recovery and got the same thing, what I now call the gray screen of death.  Everytime I would try to reboot, I would have to shut down the thing with the On/Off button.  So after doing some reading on here, I successfully reset the NVRAM and now get the chime on startup...yay!  However, I still get the gray screen.
So in order to try something new, I put Lion on a DVD to use Disk Utility to figure out if maybe my hard drive was crapping out as I can't find my old Snow Leopard disk.  I successfully booted into the DVD and using Disk Utility was able to see the 120 GB Hitachi HD.  So I tried to repair the disk as I figured that was a problem.  Well, it seemed to work but for 24 hours straight, the progress bar was frozen at around 25% and nothiong happening.  *** Right?  I rebooted a few times and tried the Disk Utility but after a few trys, Disk Utility couldn't even see the disk as if there was no HD in the laptop.  Okay, so now I figure that for sure it had to be the Hard Drive and it crapped out.  So today I went and bought a new Seagate 320 GB 7200 RPM at Best Buy where the guy assured me that the drive would work in the Macbook.  I changed it out with no problems and when I rebooted to re-install Lion on the new disk, disk utility still shows that there is no HD in the laptop.  I'm frustrated.  And to top it all off, I cannot get the DVD Disk out of the drive.  Can somebody help me out here as I am at the end of my rope and considering making the Macbook into a MacFrisbee.

Just an update to yesterday.  I managed to get the DVD out of the superdrive by shaking it out while ejecting.  I put the old HD back in and still no dice with regards to making it show up in Disk Utility.  While opened up, everything seemed to be in order with nothing burnt or smelling burnt.  All connections seem to be in place.  I guess it's off to the repair shop for the laptop.

  • MBP Freezes (have erased and installed, ran disk utility, and inc fan speed

Hi Guys, Any advice on this issue would be very much appreciated please.
Have had an original mbp for about 2 and a half years. Last few weeks it's been freezing between 1 and 5 times a day. By freezing I mean that the screen freezes and there's no cursor or keyboard fuctionality. Sound stops too. This happens using World of Warcraft, Pages, Office for Mac, and Safari, sometimes also the finder. Main culprit though is Safari and WoW. For comedy value, I'm a priest in WoW and it froze during a raid which resulted in the whole group wiping out! Great timing! lol
    So far I have:
Ran disk utility, repaired permissions and verified disk.
Did a complete erase and install.
Downloaded Fan Control and set to 3400 base speed, left fan @ 3503 RPM and Right fan @ 3508 RPM - temp reads 46.9 oC (118 oF)
I'm guessing that since my erase and install, that it is very much a hardware issue as the problem has happened again.
Since I've done the fan thing, nothing has frozen so far but I only did it about an hour ago.
If anyone could offer any other suggestions in case it does freeze again I'd be very grateful indeed :0)
Oh - one thing I don't get is that only about 4 hours after my erase and install I did the disk utility once more (Repair permissions and verify) and it came up with the below list - which is huge given it was a fresh install. Not sure if the below info will help (not really sure what it's for tbh - but there it is.
    Many thanks,
    Vizzy

According to Mactracker, your Mac could recognize 3 GB of RAM:
    http://www.mactracker.ca/
One thing to check is your RAM usage while playing WOW. I am not a gamer, so I don't know if you can play with your Dock visible, but if you can, here is an easy way to keep track of your RAM usage.
Go to Activity Monitor (in your Utilities folder in your Applications folder) and put it in the Dock. Then while in Activity Monitor, go to View (in the menu bar)>Dock Icon and select "Show Memory Usage".
You want to see a lot of green in the pie chart. If you don't, you are running out of RAM and then the computer turns to your hard drive to fulfill the functions of RAM. This process is much slower, and I could see it resulting in freezes. If you find that the green virtually disappears while gaming, you could well benefit from upping the RAM by another 1 GB to 3 GB total.
    Good luck!

  • Harddrive Upgrade Question: is my disk utility stalled out?

I recently decided to upgrade my HD on my MacBook. I have an iMac that I decided to write a disk image of the MacBook HD to, in order to get my content on to the new drive. So I used my Leopard install disc to start disc utility and copy the HD image. Its been making read/write noises for about 4 hours now, but the mouse arrow has disappeared, the progress line appears frozen, and I'm wondering if it crashed. Anyone experienced this before?

Well in my disk utility says that you can change the format in burning WINDOWS CDs. Or I'm understanding that wrong?
That doesn't mean that you pre-format the CD; i.e. do something with it before you burn your data, as would be the case with a floppy or a new hard drive. Perhaps you're referring to the disk image you're creating?
So I just copy that CD just like I do with my Mac CDs?
That's what I do when I need to copy a Windows CD; I just make a disk image of it using Disk Utility, and then burn the image, just as I would a Mac CD. No need to create a blank disk image and then alter it's format. Just make the image directly from the CD you want to copy.

  • Disk utility can't find the hard drive

I'm getting the flashing question mark when I try to start up my computer. I tried to use disk utility (starting the machine from the system software CD) to diagnose the problem but it wouldn't even find the hard drive. Any suggestions? Any help greatly appreciated!

Nothing at all, Tony. When I came back to work on my computer after a 30-minute break, one of the applications was frozen. Soon after, everything froze. After restarting, the flashing question mark came up. I was able to boot from CD but when I tried to run disk utility it wouldn't find the hard drive. At this point I'm at a loss and I'm worried about my data, which, as it happens, I hadn't stored elsewhere! Any suggestions?

  • Internal hard drive fails to mount in Disk Utility.

My internal hard drive fails to mount in Disk Utility for the past year, so I cannot verify it. However, it does mount in Disk Warrior. (1) I am concerned that it will not mount within the Apple software, and what that bodes for my computer. (2) I also have MANY spinning beach balls daily and have to use the power button to reboot. I just bought extra Crucial RAM and have yet to install it. Somehow, I don't think it wil help my issue # 1 though. Please advise, anyone out there! Thank you.

No, there are never any errors like that. Also, I have upgraded the Mac OS from 10.5 to 10.6.8. That did nothing. I backed up my Users = Christina folders to a good, 15 year old Firewire 800 La Cie 1 TB  external hard drive. I also tested using the Apple Hardware test, which showed no problems, and Alsoft's Disk Warrior and defragged, and fixed a very minor issure re directory count, probably resulting from many improper shutdowns lately due to frozen spinning beach balls. None of these procedures alleviated the issues, and I still have the same issues: mainly that super-frequent spinning beach ball. Do you think I ought to install that new RAM sitting here finally? Perhaps it is a lack of RAM??I only have 2 lousy GB's of RAM after all! Thank you so very much for a reply.

  • Erasing ipod with disk utility is it worth a shot?

My 2G ipod is frozen once again can't get it to mount or show up. just asks if I want to ignore or erase the disk or eject. Have tried all the usual tests and self diagnostics. Even tried the tapping on the right side. I'm running the HDD scan now. Just before this happened when it was still mounting I tried to reset and restore it but got a error and failure several times something about the disk . Has anyone had results with erasing the ipod disk with disk utility and then trying to restore and update.? I went to the apple store and they basically said time for a new ipod . It's well out of warranty but I figure its still worth a try erasing if disk utility might help. I already replaced the HD last year and just got a high output Newer battery for it last week so I don't want to give up yet.

Erasing seems to hang from the beginning in Disk utilty. I tried zeroing all data which takes longer but I've gotten disk utilty to get the progress bar to go about three quarters of the way and then it hangs. I also checked it with techtool pro and it was finding a lot of bad blocks in the scan.
One time I got ipod updater to say it was restored but it wasn't really and I couldn't get the software updated. So I'm back at square one with trying erase with disk utilty but after more than a dozen attempts I'm beginning to think this is a lost cause for resurrecting this ipod HD . This is of course after I received a new extended battery for it last week made by Newer which is only good for 1G and 2G ipods.
