Disksuite problem / db on errored disk

I recently had a problem on one of my mirrors on my system. The only thing on the drive that has an error is 2 slices, one with data (/export/home) and one slice for the metadb data. I don't think the drive is actually bad, it just appears that it may have needed a fsck to fix things. I was able to fsck the data partition that I have on slice 0 with no problems, but then I noticed if I fsck slice 7 the metadb slice that I get the following: (below) I don't recall using alternate super-blocks for fsck and didn't want to chance making things worse. Is there an easy way to remove the metadb from the disk and then I suppose I would also have to unmirror the drive and re-establish the mirror?
Any suggestions?
# fsck /dev/rdsk/c0t3d0s7
** /dev/rdsk/c0t3d0s7
Can't roll the log for /dev/rdsk/c0t3d0s7.
DISCARDING THE LOG MAY DISCARD PENDING TRANSACTIONS.
DISCARD THE LOG AND CONTINUE? yes
BAD SUPER BLOCK: MAGIC NUMBER WRONG
USE AN ALTERNATE SUPER-BLOCK TO SUPPLY NEEDED INFORMATION;
eg. fsck [-F ufs] -o b=# [special ...]
where # is the alternate super block. SEE fsck_ufs(1M).
I will also include info about the mirror. The output basically states to add another drive, but like I said, I don't think the drive is bad.

Investigating this further I found the following error entry in alert log file (D:\app\dwh.admin\diag\asm\+asm\+asm\trace\ alert_+asm.log)
ORA-15025: could not open disk '\\.\ORCLDISKDATA1'
ORA-27037: unable to obtain file status

This explains the 'UNKNOWN' under HEADER_STATUS for this disk.
Do you reckon if this has anything to do with incompatibility of ORACLE software with the OS version?
Here are more details:

  • Problems restarting with error disk

    i'm having a little problem......
i loaded a disc into the slot drive.
it never showed up on the desktop.
attempted to restart, but everything froze.
soooo, i forced my computer off by holding down the power button.
attempted to start fresh, but now my computer doesn't get past the gray screen with the apple and the little spinny circle. it's seemed to be focused on trying to recognize the disc.
i tried pushing the eject button, no avail.
i also tried a start up while holding the option key.....but the mouse was a spinning watch instead of an arrow, so i could never select the "hard disk" icon.
any suggestions on how to get this disk out????

When syncing iToiuch I receive an error "disk cannot be read from or written to". Sync fails at step 3 of 6.

Sounds like a hardware problem - a bad disk or, at the very least, bad sectors on the disk in the iPod.
There probably is not much you can do. You can try putting the iPod into disk mode and check the drive using Windows:
    Open My Computer
    Right click the iPod
    Choose Properties
    Go to the Tools tab
    Click the Check now button
Windows may or may not be able to salvage the drive. You do not say if you can still use the iPod without errors; there is the possibility that you will lose data on the iPod during the repair.

  • "Error: disk needs to be repaired.. "

When I run disk utility I got the message "Error disk needs to be repaired.." In addition i got the errors:
Incorrect number of file hard links
Volume bitmap needs minor repair for orphaned blocks
    Invalid volume free block count
When I restart and after command R, I run the Disk utility but then it shows no errors, what is the problem then?. Thanks

Try removing these one at a time:
         /Home/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/
         /Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iPhoto.plist and com.apple.iPhoto.LSSharedFileList.plist
         /Home/Pictures/iPhoto Library
Place one at a time into the Trash but do not Empty the Trash. Try to open and use iPhoto. If iPhoto works then the item you put in the Trash is the cause of the problem. If the problem turns out to be iPhoto Library, then you will need to look to a third-party utility that can fix the library.
To find the invisible library folder:
    Exposing the /Home/Library/ Folder
Pick one of the following methods:
    A. This method will make the folder visible permanently. Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder and paste the following at the command prompt:
    chflags nohidden ~/Library
    Press RETURN.
    B. Click on the Desktop, press the OPTION (⌥) button, select Library from the Finder's Go menu.
    C. Select Go To Folder from the Finder's Go menu. Paste the following in the path field:
    ~/Library
    Press the Go button.

  • Download error:disk was full. How do I download more shows?

I received a download error: disk was full. What do I need to do to download shows?

I had the same problem. The Apple TV (first generation) was set to streaming, so it being "full" didn't entirely make sense. What's more, it meant that the options to remove content were not available. I finally solved the problem by resetting the Apple TV to its factory settings and starting over. It won't even allow me to choose "Streaming" for setting it up now. So I have it set up as a "Synching" Apple TV.

  • Startup problems -- not finding hard disk

I have a g5 iMac that is several years old (pre-Intel). This morning, my husband went to use it. He said there was some iDisk synching error (I've been getting those on my MacBook Pro, too) and then the cursor turned into the rainbow and he rebooted. Upon rebooting, the question mark folder started flashing and the computer wouldn't boot up. It's definitely having a problem finding the hard disk. I've started it up with the Tiger Install DVD but when I get to Disk Utility, the only thing that shows up in the lefthand column is the DVD drive with the Install DVD Is my hard drive fried? Of course it's never been backed up. Is there anything I can do from home or do I need to lug it into the Apple Store? Please help!!!
    TIA,

Here's Apple doc.#58042 in case you need it; flashing ? mark.

  • Getting firmware update error. disk write error message

i installed the lastest ipod shuffle update and when I try to restore ipod shuffle I get the error message "firmware update error. disk write error" have no idea what to do. ipod does not show up in itunes

ok, someone else with similiar problem, I just opened the box 5 days ago, installed iTunes (the June 2005 version) that came on CD with it, ran iTunes, downloaded some music, plugged in Shuffle, goto download, fails, no device found, can see it under XP ok, goto apple.com to find support FAQ, I then ran up Ipod Updater, thinking that since it was new, firmware must be recent (little did I know ) so I thought do the Restore straight off, it started, then failed with the "disk write error" and havent been able to talk with iPod Updater since, then tried installing iPodUpdater to another PC, no luck, then downloaded later versions of iTunes and uPdater, installed on a 3rd PC, same deal, unable to communicate to Shuffle, rang phone support, spoken to two different support people, finally they agree its faulty (something I figured out 4 days ago) and suggest I return it to Apple for replacement, and fill out a Service Request form, which opened a can of new worms, like there is no "Warranty Replacement" option, lots of questions like Credit Card details and nowhere to actually define that I have a "faulty" or "dead" or Shuffle to return and they obviously did not read the comments, that were requested, as they simply sent docking station in the mail, so now back to square one, trying to lodge a Service Request to "replace" a brand new, dead shuffle. Not having a nice iPod experience here !!, but Itunes is good, although expecting it will take a couple weeks all up before I get a working Shuffle to actually download to. Tried again phone support, to sort out this mess, waited in queue, then line goes dead. Oh Well ... I blame my daughter for this heartache, she insisted on having an iPod.

    Hi plugking,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
Repairing disk permissions is the first step in resolving this error message:
Troubleshooting permissions issues in Mac OS X
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2963
Open Disk Utility (/Applications/Utilities/). Select your Mac OS X startup volume in the column on the left of the Disk Utility window, then click the First Aid tab. Click the Repair Disk Permissions
Also, make sure you have the latest version of iTunes installed:

  • Why does my MacBook Pro still have disk problems even with replacement disks?

I have a 2008-era MacBook Pro. In January it failed to boot. I took it to Apple and paid for a replacement system board. When it came back they told me the hard drive was also bad and they had replaced it.
About a month later my performance became very bad. A test of the hard disk revealed unrecoverable errors. I reformatted the disk and restored from Time Machine. About a month later, the same problem surfaced. This time I took it back to Apple and they put in a replacement hard drive.
Now here I am about a month after that and the hard drive has asked to be reformatted twice again.
What is REALLY wrong and how do I get it fixed?

How does the disk test which checks the drive have to do with corrupted data?
    Let me clarify:
    1. System gets slow.
    2. I run the Disk Utility > Verify disk.
    3. It reports data corruption errors and and says to run Disk Utility > Repair Disk
    4. I run Disk Utility > Repair Disk
    5. It says errors are such I need to run it from the Utilty partition
    6. I restart from the Utility partition and run Repair Disk
    7. It reports it can't fix the problem. Tells me to erase the disk and restore.
    8. I do all that.
    9. Now I run Verify Disk again. All is well, and all continues to be ok for several weeks.
So, if the Time Machine backup was corrupt, step 9 above would fail.
Since this is the third hard disk since January, I doubt that the problem is REALLY the disk.

  • Error disk utility can't repair this disk...disk and restore your backed-up files

I have been working on a project using an external hard disk. I used my Macbook Pro (2010)  to create this project and files (about 31 GB). Now I am trying to open the disk on my iMac (2014) and it doesn't show up. I can see the HDD when I use disk utility but get this message when I try to repair/restore the disc:
"error disk utility can't repair this disk...disk and restore your backed-up files"
The funny thing is that the disk works absolutely fine with my Macbook Pro. What am I missing?
    Imac :OSX 10.9.4 , 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5, 8 Gb Ram.

    Nico,
    Did you find a way?
This just happened to me too.

So, you can't Install OSX to the external?
Or you can't boot from it when you do?

  • Hi,  Had boot issue and got the following from DU repair function on Macintosh hd: updating boot support.....Error: Disk utility can't repair this disk.....reformat and restore backed up files. How is that done or do I go to Genius?

In reference to question the computer gave no warning but lost internet connectivity.  I shut down for a while and when returned it would only boot to gray logo screen with spinning gear.  Ran disk utility and on Mac HD drive it stopped after "Updating boot support partitions as required". Then in red: Error: Disk utility can' repair this disk ....disk, and restore backed up files.   I'm running OS X 10.8 and had just updated the iOS about three days ago.  Not familiar with reformat process on MacBook Pro and would like some ideas whether I should go to the Genius Bar here in Sydney or try it on my own.   I have been using time machine to back up to a 1TB La Cie drive right up to the crash.   Thanks for any advice.

Well it turned out the drive was shot.  Took it to the genius bar yesterday and they ran a test on the drive before trying the restore routine again.  Drive failed.
Replaced the drive and got the MBP back today.  Pretty quick and decent service once you get an appointment.
Now having trouble figuring how to do the Time Machine  saved files.  Have several applications which I'd like to keep but not sure how to trans the apps from my backup to the new.  Hunting for answers on that on the web.
    Thanks for you help, Eustace.
