Display file except 1st character of each line

I'm looking to display the contents of a file, ignoring the 1st character of each line.
Can anyone point me in the right direction, please?

The Advanced Bash Scripting document (in [HTML|http://tldp.org/LDP/abs/html] or [PDF|http://tldp.org/LDP/abs/abs-guide.pdf]) would be a good resource for your quest. This document is not specific to Mac OS X, but it's a very good resource and with a wealth of examples.
The O'Reilly +Learning the bash Shell, 3rd Ed+ book is also a good resource and the O'Reilly +Bash Cookbook+ book would seem well-suited for how you approach your postings.

  • Loading Hex Files with multiple records with each line starting with : record marker, how do I load this hex file into a front panel table ? thanks in advance, Jeff.

    I have written a routine that loads a Hex file, checks for record marker,length,address etc then loads the data into a table on front panel. However, my routine only loads single record hex files. I need to be able to load multiple record files, I need to identify the ':' colon record marker start for each record in the hex file, I just can't see how to loop my routine so that all records with ':' prefix marker are loaded.

    Jeff,
    I'm not exactly sure of what you are trying to do. Is it possible you could post your code, or a screen shot of the diagram in question, so that I can get a better understanding, and possibly offer some assistance?
    I am familiar with hex files, but not with the : marker separating records. This may be able to be solved with simple text parsing, and as I am not familiar with how you are retrieving and/or displaying the files, I require more information.
    Thanks

  • How to find a specific word in sentence in each line?

    How to find a specific word in sentence in each line and output will show start from the beginning from specific word plus with small description from each sentence?
    For example: I need to find a "+Wednesday+" and "+Thursday+" word in each sentence by line by line from "myfile.txt".
    Go ballet class next Wednesday.
    On the Wednesday is going to swim class.
    We have a meeting on Thursday at Panda's.
    Then it will show the output:
    Wednesday : ballet class
    Wednesday : swim class
    Thursday: meeting at Panda's
    I am going to figure out in Java console to read from a file for specific word from each line and how to make it output in correct way. I know already to make input/file codes.

    I got it and understand much better. Thank you very much. There is a problem with it because I knew how to make
    a specific word in sentence but how I should make Output for specific word and some words from sentence.
    For example:
    Input:
    +"On Thursday go to ballet class"+
    +"Swim class on Friday one time a month at 2 p.m."+
    I used the codes for that:
    class FindSchedule{
         String firstline = "On Thursday go to ballet class ";
         String secondline = "Swim class on Friday one time a month ";
         FindSchedule(){
              System.out.println(firstline + findTheIndex("Thursday", firstline));
              System.out.println(secondline + findTheIndex("Friday", secondline));
         public int findTheIndex(String word, String sentence){
              int index;
              index = sentence.indexOf(word);
              return index;
         public static void main (String[] args){
              new FindSchedule();
    }The output will be:
    Thursday: ballet class
    Friday: 14:00 swim class one time a week
    Notice that time is changing in output complete different from input.
    I need to find out how to extract some words from each sentence for output. Do you know how to do it?

    Like reading a file and find the end of character and writing into a file.
    The above way is correct or any other way?Try it and see. Such a program will only be a dozen lines long.

  • Adding a pipe character '|' at the end of each line

    How can I add a '|' at the end of each line in a text file?
    Please provide an example.
    TIA

    Using Readers and Writers are often a better choice for text: they are designed for character-based I/O, handling different character set encodings and thus more easily localizable.
    BufferedReader and PrintWriter are buffered which in many cases will increase performance.
    These classes also provide line-oriented methods, readLine() and println(), which will handle end-of-line delimiters in a platform-independant way.
    BufferedReader in = null ;
    PrintWriter out = null ;
    try {
        in = new BufferedReader(new FileReader("infile.txt")) ;
        out = new PrintWriter(new FileWriter("outfile.txt")) ;

  • Reg. Special Character at end of each line

    Hello Experts,
    I have an internal table of type string which has to be uploaded into the directories
    Each line has to be ended with a comma and for which I concatenated the work area and ',' before appending to the internal table.  This is fine till this point.
    After downloading the file from the directory, when opened with a notepad, i could see a special character (LINE FEED rectangular box) at the end of each line.
    I couldn't understand why this character got appended at the end of each record.  Pl suggest me on how i can overcome this special character.
    Thanks

    Hi,
    I am developing one HRMS report for sending salaries to bank. Bank has given one format, there should be 24 spaces at the end of each line in the report. But I am not getting any spaces in the report at the end of line. I have tried soo many ways to get that, but I unable to get spaces. If I put any character it is coming, but if I put space that is not coming. For the line that is set the height of the Repeating Frame long enough to have the blank space. Vertical Elasticity should be expand.
    Also you can try by setting the property *"Vert. Space between frames"* for the Repeating frame.
    Hope this helps.

  • How would you read in each line of data and display them to message box?

    How would you read in each line of data from the _.txt file_ and display the whole data using an information-type message box?
    I know how to display each line of the .txt file data, but I do not know how to display the whole thing.
    Here is how I did to display each line of data using the message box:
    import javax.swing.JOptionPane;          // Needed for the JOptionPane class
    import java.io.*;                         // Needed for file classes
    public class problem3
         public static void main(String[] args) throws IOException

              String categories;          // Needed to read the categories
              // Get the filename.
              filename = JOptionPane.showInputDialog("Enter the filname.");
              // Open the file.
              FileReader freader = new FileReader(filename);
              BufferedReader inputFile = new BufferedReader(freader);
              // Read the categories from the file.
              categories = inputFile.readLine();
              // If a category was read, display it and
              // read the remainig categories.
              while(categories != null)
                   // Display the last category read.
                   JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(categories);
                   // Read the next category.
                   categories = inputFile.readLine();
              // Close the file.
              inputFile.close();
    }I think I need to change here:
    // If a category was read, display it and

              while(categories != null)
                   // Display the last category read.

                   // Read the next category.

              }but I don't know how to.
    Could you please help me?

    What is not understood about your question is which part of "read a bunch of lines and display them in a textbox" do you not understand.
    First thing's first though: You do recognize that "read a bunch of lines and display them in a textbox" has a few distinct and completely independent parts, right?I'm sorry. I'm not good at English, so I do not understand what you said...
    What I was trying to say is "How to display the whole lines of .txt file in single dialog box."We know that.
    Do you understand that any problem can be broken down into smaller pieces?
    Do you understand that your problem has the following pieces?
    1. Read lines from the file.
    2. Put the lines together into one String.
    3. Put the String into the message box.
    and maybe
    4. Make sure the message box contents are split into lines exactly as the file was.
    (You didn't make it clear if that last one is a requirement.)
    Do you understand that 1-4 are completely independent problems and can be solved separately from each other?
    Do you understand that you have stated that you already know how to do 1 and 3?
    Therefore, you are NOT asking "How to display the whole lines of .txt file in single dialog box." Rather, you ARE asking either #2 or #4 or both.
    If you say once more "display all the lines of the file in one dialog box," then it is clear that we are unable to communicate with you and we cannot help you.

  • Find files that match with given string, except one character in a fixed position

    Hi,
    I want to find files in a directory with a given string (ss-20140129-process-000*.sdx), where only one character will be mismatched, so have to use wildcard for that character. This means I am looking for filenames where everything needs to be matched except
    one character in position of "*". For the samples given below: 1st 3 files matched with the given string, but last 3 files have not matched, so first 3 files will be counted.
    ss-20140129-process-0001.sdx
    ss-20140129-process-0004.sdx
    ss-20140129-process-0009.sdx
    zx-20140129-process-0001.sdx
    bt-20140129-process-0002.sdx
    zx-20140129-process-0001.sdx
    I can use the command like (GCI -path $folder -filter ss-20140129-process-000?.sdx), BUT problem is i am building a string for the filter (code given below), where i DO NOT know how to use "?" within the string to make a character exception.
    Code:
    $datevalue = [datetime]::parseexact($trandate,"MMddyy",$null)
    $yyyymmdd = $datevalue.tostring('yyyyMMdd')
    $FileToCheck = ("ss-"+$yyyymmdd+"-process-000?.sdx")
    GCI -path $folder -filter $FileToCheck
    But it's definitely NOT working for syntax problem.
    Any help?

    I don't think it's a syntax issue in the filter.  This works fine for me:
    $yyyymmdd = '20140129'
    $FileToCheck = ("ss-"+$yyyymmdd+"-process-000?.sdx")
    Get-ChildItem -Path . -Filter $FileToCheck
    <#
    Output:
    Directory: C:\source\Temp\sdxtext
    Mode LastWriteTime Length Name
    -a--- 1/30/2014 10:16 AM 0 ss-20140129-process-0001.sdx
    -a--- 1/30/2014 10:16 AM 0 ss-20140129-process-0004.sdx
    -a--- 1/30/2014 10:16 AM 0 ss-20140129-process-0009.sdx
    #>
    You can try adding some debug output right before the call to Get-ChildItem. Check the values of $Folder and $FileToCheck, make sure they're correct. You can also fiddle with the values and call Get-ChildItem manually until it works, which would then tell you
    how the code needs to be changed.

    Thanks Andra,
    The problem is the multiple invoices is for non goods receipt item so there will be no delivery.At the time of creating a PO the GR is not checked so there will be no delivery .
    Also this setting is for invoices which are comming from Vendors.But if we are genrating the invoices manually it is not blocking those invoices.Also i there is nowhere mentioned in Incomming invoice to set tolerence for incomming invoice.Are you talking about Vendor tolerences?
    Thanks in advance

  • Java write/append to each line of a text file

    I have spent numerous hours trying to figure out what I am doing wrong. If anyone more experienced could tell me what is wrong with my code.
    I have a very simple text file with 5 lines:
    line1
    line2
    line3
    line4
    line5
    All I am trying to do is append some string to the end of each of those lines. Everytime I run my code, it erases all content but does not write/append anything to the file. Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks! I am about to throw this monitor out the window!!
    package Chapter6;
    import java.io.*;
    public class fileNavigation2 {
         public static void main(String[] args) {
              File dir = new File("C:\\testing");
              System.out.println(dir.isDirectory());
              try {
                   File file = new File(dir, "Test.txt");
                   FileReader fr = new FileReader(file);
                   BufferedReader br = new BufferedReader(fr);
                   FileWriter fw = new FileWriter(file);
                   BufferedWriter bw = new BufferedWriter(fw);
                   String s = "Add1,";
                   String s2 = "Add2\n";
                   String str;
                   while((str = br.readLine()) != null) {
                   StringBuffer sb = new StringBuffer(str);
                   sb.append(s + s2);
                   String y = sb.toString();
                   System.out.println(sb);
                   System.out.println("Appending");

                   bw.close();
                   System.out.println("Done");

    }

    First, thanks a lot for your feedback. The code makes a lot of sense but it does not update the content of my Test.txt file.
    I only edited the line of code that creates the new file so that it could find the location of the file.
