Display problem - need advise

Hi everyone,
I have a problem with the display of my MBP. It's a 15" Glossy LED (June 2007). It happens heretically about a couple of time per week, sometimes less, sometimes more.
When I open the lid to wack it back from sleep, I have sometimes the display that have a sort of flickering artifact (see picture 1). Then, after 5 or 10 secs like this, the screen goes like picture 2: a mess of grey patterns. But it also happens that it goes directly into 'pic #2 mode'. On a external display, I don't have any problem. And it happens quasi exclusively when I'm on battery.

pic #2: http://tof.canardpc.com/show/54c3b309-586b-404a-a742-6197b16a0570.html
I have done a RMA on it to a Apple Premium Reseller (no Apple store here in Belgium). They tried to gave me an estimation on what it will cost to me and they couldn't reproduce this problem, so they guessed based on my pictures that it should be the screen that needs replacement. But they can't be sure and if this problem occurs again after the 3 months repair garanty, then, bad luck, all extra repair will be at my own expenses.
So, what I basically want to know is if there is someone who had the same problem and if a accurate diagnosis has been done.
Many thanks for your help.

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
If you never have the problem on an external display, that does imply that the problem, whatever it is, lies with the internal display. If the problem were caused by the NVIDIA chip problem, then you would also expect to see the same artifacts on the external. You might want to check anyway to see if you have the NVIDIA chip:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377
This problem can be intermittent, so you need to be sure that your graphics artifact never shows up on the external display. If it ever does, then you have a graphics chip problem rather than a display problem.
It sounds like the reseller may just be guessing as to what the problem might be. Is there any way you could send your Mac directly to Apple for diagnosis? It also seems that a display replacement should be good for more than 90 days. I'm wondering if there is any one else--maybe an Apple authorized repair service--who could do an actual diagnosis. Display replacement is quite expensive--I would want to be sure that the display was indeed the problem and not the graphics chip. If it were to turn out to be the graphics chip, then according to the article, Apple would do the repair free of charge.
Good luck!

    I have a class called "Window" that obviously sets up my window, I also have a class called "IconGen" that should generate an Icon. Both of the class codes are posted below but for some reason I cannot get the graphic to show up in the frame. Can anyone lend a helping hand??
    Window code:
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.awt.event.*;
    import javax.swing.*;
    public class Window extends JFrame{
         JPanel jp = new JPanel();
         public void setupJFrame(){
              setBackground(Color.gray);
              setSize(200,200);
              setVisible(true);
              addWindowListener     (new WindowAdapter(){
                   public void windowClosing(WindowEvent e){
                        System.exit(0);
         public void setupJPanel(){
         jp.setBackground(Color.white);
         getContentPane().add(jp);
         setVisible(true);}
         public static void main(String args[]){
              Window w = new Window();
              IconGen i = new IconGen();
              w.setupJFrame();
              w.setupJPanel();
         w.getContentPane().add(i);
    IconGen code:
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.awt.geom.*;
    import javax.swing.*;
    public class IconGen extends JComponent{
    private     Color salmon = new Color(255,128,128);
    private     Polygon p = new Polygon();
    public Polygon IconGen(){
                   int[] x = {75,125,75,25};
                   int[] y = {25,75,125,75};
                   int pts = 4;
                   Polygon p = new Polygon(x,y,pts);
         return(p);
    public void paint(Graphics g){
                   super.paint(g);
                   g.setColor(salmon);
                   g.translate(15,15);
                   g.fillPolygon(p);
    }

    Hi the constructor of IconGen looks like a problem, and it should subclass JPanel not JComponent.
    Here's a working example:
    import java.awt.*;
    import javax.swing.*;
    public class TestFrame extends javax.swing.JFrame {
    /** Creates new form TestFrame */
    public TestFrame() {
    initComponents();
    this.getContentPane().add(new MyIcon());
    /** This method is called from within the constructor to
    * initialize the form.
    * WARNING: Do NOT modify this code. The content of this method is
    * always regenerated by the Form Editor.
    private void initComponents() {
    addWindowListener(new java.awt.event.WindowAdapter() {
    public void windowClosing(java.awt.event.WindowEvent evt) {
    exitForm(evt);
    pack();
    /** Exit the Application */
    private void exitForm(java.awt.event.WindowEvent evt) {
    System.exit(0);
    * @param args the command line arguments
    public static void main(String args[]) {
    new TestFrame().show();
    // Variables declaration - do not modify
    // End of variables declaration
    class MyIcon extends JPanel{
    Color salmon = new Color(255,128,128);
    int[] x = {75,125,75,25};
    int[] y = {25,75,125,75};
    int pts = 4;
    Polygon p = new Polygon(x,y,pts);
    public void paint(Graphics g){
    g.setColor(salmon);
    g.fillPolygon(p);

    I need advise and help with this problem .
    First , I have been with Mac for many years ( 14 to be exact ) I do have some knowledge and understanding of Apple product .
    At the present time I'm having lots of problems with the router so I was looking in to some info , and come across one web site regarding : port forwarding , IP addresses .
    In my frustration , amongst lots of open web pages tutorials and other useless information , I come across innocent looking link and software to installed called Genieo , which suppose to help with any router .
    Software ask for permission to install , and about 30 % in , my instinct was telling me , there is something not right . I stop installation . Delete everything , look for any
    trace in Spotlight , Library . Nothing could be find .
    Now , every time I open Safari , Firefox or Chrome , it will open in my home page , but when I start looking for something in steed of Google page , there is
    ''search.genieo.com'' page acting like a Google . I try again to get raid of this but I can not find solution .
    With more research , again using genieo.com search eng. there is lots of articles and warnings . From that I learn do not use uninstall software , because doing this will install more things where it come from.
    I do have AppleCare support but its to late to phone them , so maybe there some people with knowledge , how to get this of my computer
    Any help is welcome , English is my learned language , you may notice this , so I'm not that quick with the respond

    Genieo definitely doesn't help with your router. It's just adware, and has no benefit to you at all. They scammed you so that they could display their ads on your computer.
    To remove it, see:
    http://www.thesafemac.com/arg-genieo/
    Do not use the Genieo uninstaller!

    Afraid Compressor won't work with MKV. If you have access to a system running an earlier version than Mavericks, and with Perian installed you can use MPEG Streamclip or Quick Time Pro to convert to a mov.

  • Help needed identifying display problem

    I have a 17 inch Powerbook G4. I saw that a lot of people have got display problems and unfortunately I have too. Hopefully you can help me figure out what’s exactly wrong so I can try to fix it!
    Here are the symptoms:
    The upper third of the display is working fine.
    The middle and lower third of the display are darker / faded and flicker a bit at around 20/30 hertz. (But this part is backlit, only a lot less)
    No other symptoms, also the grey part isn’t deformed)
    What I would like to know is, if someone can tell me if this is the Logicboard / Inverterboard or the Display itself.
    Thanks in advance for your help!!

    I have run several tests. Nothing seems to be wrong with video memory or so. The external display port produces a fine image on an external monitor too.
    I have made some pictures of what the screen looks like:
    http://www.renessance.nl/powerbook/display01.jpg
    http://www.renessance.nl/powerbook/display02.jpg
    http://www.renessance.nl/powerbook/display03.jpg
    http://www.renessance.nl/powerbook/display04.jpg
    http://www.renessance.nl/powerbook/display05.jpg
    The bad part is harder to read, doesn't get really black and flickers @ 60hz or so.
    So I'm still wondering if it's the inverterboard or display itself.
    Your help is really appreciated!

  • My original post, locked by this forum. Display problem related

    Hi G5 Gurus,
    The display problem first, we all know when screen savers display, a click on the mouse will bring you back to the active desktop, this was how it worked., but now, sometimes a click cause the G5 to sleep!
    As for the sleep, I dare not to put it to sleep these days, because I am afriad it may cause a fire by over heating. Sometmes, actually four times in the past few months, my G5 could wake up by itself, followed by a extrem high speed running of the cooling fan, it sounded like a hair dryer running in the same room. Sometimes the sreen could light up, just like real wake up, sometimes, it was black. No clicks the mouse or keyboeard could bring it back to normal, I had to press and hold the power button to turn it off.
    This crazy problem happened for the first time last summer, a dead hard disk was the cost. Apple replaced it, but failed to detect the cooling or power or display problem. I was given one month extended free service, but right after its end, the problem was back and happened even more often.
    Please let me know if any of you had the same problem and please advise what to do.
    100s Gs of thanks.

    I have the EXACT same problem. In fact, I could not have described it better myself. What gives? I brought it in to the "genius" bar and they repolaced the power supply free of charge but the problem is still there. I noticed they ordered a new logic board but did not end up replacing it after all. Did you have yours replaced and did it work? Is this a known issue?

    Hi La teller,
    Thank you for your reply. The 'genius' here in London only replace the dead hard disk, which I belive was a victim of this problem. I was told they couldn't find anything wrong with the power supply or the cooling system.
    Now at lest I know I am not the only bad luck guy. Let's wait and see if others are having the same problem. I am not sure if this is a known issue to Apple, even if it is, it may take years before they can offer a recall or free repaire. I noticed that some G5s have already been suffering from power problems and a free repaire was offered.
    Thank you again and hope Apple can take our concerns into their consideration soon.

    Hello,
    I'm also having this problem (fan running, won't come out of sleep), just spoke with an apple care rep. He confirmed my suspition that it was software, not hardware as I have just had the logic board and power supply replaced.
    His suggestions were to:
    1. Run disk repair from the startup CD
    try running OS X from a firewire drive and see if the same behavior happens or
    perform and archive and install.
    When the fan starts to run like that it means the OS is not communicating with the hardware properly. The OS could be somewhat corrupt if you were having hardware issues beforehand, hence the need for a reinstall. I will be performing an archive and install after the disk repair, I'll let you know if it fixes the problem!

    Hi Stopha6,
    Thank you for your message. I never imagined it could be a software issue, cos it looked so hardware.
    Please keep me updated with your progress.
    By the way, as I said in my old posts, a hard disk went dead when this happened for the very first time, how do you read this?
    Thank you.

    Hi Stopha6,
    After reading your reply again, I realized that the system had already been reinstalled. As I said when it happened for the first time, the hard disk died with it, which was replaced, of course with a new OS X, but the same problem is still happening. May this suggest that it is not just a software problem? Thank you. Songyan

    The Fans going at full is only because you have an application that is using a lot of cpu power and therefore causing the imac to heat up so it turns the fans on. The screen-saver and sleep problem you describe sounds like something that may just happen on accident. But this sounds mostly like a software problem. Try making sure to always quit all non-apple products and see if anything changes.

    Thank you, Ag-Nate. I will try as you adivised but I con't think the fans were activeted my intensive CPU using. In most of the cases, the problems happened when the Mac was sleeping, when the minimum CPU were being used.

    "The Fans going at full is only because you have an application that is using a lot of cpu power and therefore causing the imac to heat up so it turns the fans on."
    That's only partly right. A hard-working process will make the fans run at high speed, of course.
    But, the OS is in touch with the firmware of the iMac, telling it how to run the fans, based upon information the OS X kernel is getting about the state of the hardware.
    If the firmware loses touch with the OS for some reason, and is not getting instructions on how to run the fan, it will default to running them at full blast, to be on the safe side (and this "full blast" fan mode is way louder than anything you'll generally experience during normal usage, I know from experience).
    So it may not be so simple as a hard-working cpu process kicking the fans on.

    Hi I have a 20" G5 imac it's about 18 months old and I am having the same problem, It freezes and the fan runs really loud. It's nothing to do with software as my I.T. guy has done a complete re-install. All of our admin people have imacs of differring ages and the flat panels are all OK but every one of the G5s has had a booting problem. Some fell into the recall for replacement logic boards but the one I have at home is the newest and doesn't. I'm waiting for my apple reseller to get back to me, but it looks like it's the logic board and as none of the serial numbers fall into the recall, I'm expecting a big bill. I'm really disappointed as I've been a professional apple user for over 15 years and have grown to expect a certain amount of honesty and integrity from them. Looking at all of the discussion boards and the amount of people complaining of the same problem the logic boards are defective and apple should be replacing these free of charge.

    Kensall,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
    As in the other thread I wrote:
    Being from England, you may find the repair program under these pages:
    http://www.apple.com/uk/support/imac/repairextensionprogram/
    http://www.apple.com/uk/support/imac/powersupply/repairextension/
    Check both of them as they refer to different models.
    If neither of yours is under the program, please start a new topic thread so someone can help you.

    First off, you'll get a wider audience who may be able to solve your problem. Secondly, responses to you won't confuse the original poster with solutions that don't apply to them. And thirdly, you'll know for certain whether or not a response applies to you.

    I am having a very similar problem. My G5 imac has already had the logic board replaced from the leaking capacitor problem. 8 mos. later the power supply was replaced under the second recall program when it failed to start up.
    It had been working now for almost a year, when about 3 mos. ago I started to experience the sudden dimming effect - if the display was untouched the screen would dim about 30% similar to a laptop in energy save mode. I checked and none of these types of options were set in the pref panes. At the same time I would have the iMac go to sleep after a while from non-use, and then when I tried to wake it it would stir for a few seconds and then go right back to sleep. It took 2-3 attempts to wake it up.
    Then last week, as I tried to wake it, it just shut down instead completely. I had to hold the power button down to recycle it to get it to come back to life (3 times).
    Today was it - I found what I thought was a sleeping iMac, but it will not power up at all. I opened the back cover and the power supply is working, but I cannot get the board to energize, I reset the PMU, but the #2 LED won't even blink. It is completely dead.
    Basically every time I used this computer I held my breath that it would not work. After 2 recalls I still only get 9 mos. out of it? Apple is really starting to show it is like the "big" computer makers, the quality is going right down the tubes.

  • Display problem, new motherboard.

    I am posting really to vent. I have a sick iMac with display problems. It's got vertical white lines and loss of colors. ChumpUSA indicates that the motherboard will need to be replaced and it's going to take four to five business days to get the part.
    I purchased the iMac for a client who I encouraged to switch. They trust me and have purchased two other Macs. They are doing fine, so they aren't soured yet. It's a difficult position in which to find myself. Computers have trouble and need to be fixed, knock wood, I've had very few hardware problems in my 10+ years using Apple products.
    I'm just in a bad spot with the failure of the motherboard (poor quality?) and the length of time my client is without a computer for one of his employees.
    We will work around it, of course. I just don't see why it would take a week to get a part.
    Any advise or words of encouragement are appreciated.

    Sorted myself but will post solution in case others need it.

  • MSI 648 Max - Display Problems

    I recently bought the MSI 648 Max motherboard, as my system needed an upgrade quite badly.  To cut the costs down a bit, I’ve used some parts from my previous system (eg the video card which is an 2x AGP, 64 Mb, Kyro based card) but got new RAM, CPU and psu.
    I put together the system (described below), loaded Windows ME, updated all drivers with latest releases, and the thing works but the quality of the display is really bad    ;( .  That is, I get lots of video artefacts (shadows, fading text, vertical lines, distorted colours, etc).  The video card was working fine on my other machine.  Also, Sisoft Sandra says that the card is operating at 2x AGP, as it should.
    I am not overclocking; some of the BIOS parameters I used are as follows (based on the OPTIMAL DEFAULTS):
    AGP Aperture Size                     128 Mb
    DRAM CAS Latency                      by SPD
    Timing Setting Mode                      NORMAL
    MA 1T/2T Select                      AUTO
    Primary Graphics Adapter      AGP
    Allocate IRQ to PCI VGA      NO
    CPU/DRAM Frequency Ratio      by SPD
    DRAM Frequency                      167 MHz (for now)
    CPU Frequency                      133 MHz
    AGP/PCI Frequency                      66/33
    DRAM Vcore          2.6 V
    CPU Vcore         AUTO
    The system temperature showed in the Health Status is less than 40 C (104 F).
    I have tried the latest AMI BIOS (version 1.3), and then reverted to version 1.0, but I still have the same display problem.
    I would really appreciate some help.

    Hi Yogeshwar,
    The Cell info display now a days displays only some Offers that are dished out by the Operator. Once upon a time it was showing the AREA where you are but thats no more there I think. Not atleast on the Vodafone network in India. And its the same on all handsets, not only Nokia X1-01. Recently I had contacted Vodafone in this regard and was told that the duration for which the info is flashed can not be increased.
    As for the signal problem hope that the Antenna is not covered by any other object.. Refer Pg.No. 7 of the User_Guide ...Else you may have to get the phone inspected by Nokia Care...

I went to apple authorised service provider at least 8 times. they changed my logic board, RAM etc. the problem remains same.
    finally, I talked to applecare again. they adviced me to run fresh Lion installation and observe the machine without any thridd party software. I got the same problem.
    when I call them, every person attending the call advices me new thing ! they are very polite and say: "if you have this problem again, please inform me." unfortunately, when I write them again about the same problem they do not care it !!!
    I am very much frustated and psychologically tired with this issue.
    Thanks a lot for your assistance.

    I can only do wild guesses at this popint, only thing I can think of on your end is possible AC power problems, but I've not been impressed with Apple's quality since the 68K or Beige days.
    THe iMac7,1 I'm on now needed repair 3 times & still scares me with it's PSU temps.

  • Another dual display problem - GeForce FX 5200

    I've seen lots of questions about dual display problem, situation when trying to connect two non-apple vga displays to your graphic card.
    I have GeForce FX 5200 graphic card, with 2 display output's. And two DELL 17" vga LCD displays.
    I manage to connect 1 display regulary with dvi to vga converter, but for other display I tried several difrent converters ADC to DVI to VGA, and it just did NOT work.
    G5 could see other display in display settings, in arrange option I coud see two identical displays, but I don't get anu picture (desktop) on other display???
    Is it problem with output's on my graphic card (Gforce FX 5200), could it be soloved with some ADC to VGA converter?
    P.S. Dr. Bott ADC VGA Extractor is not compatible with GeForce FX 5200????

    Yes.

    It should work. On Dr. Botts web-site it says:
    "VGA Extractor is compatible with any video card with an ADC port in a PowerMac G5"

  • Display problem T520

    I have a T520 4239CTO.  Win 7pro.  I'm having a display problem.  There's a 1 cm grey line 2/3rd down the screen.  The image is split--part of the top display is at the bottom.  The color on the screen rotates between orange, red, blue, green, etc.
    I use the Lenovo update so my drivers, etc are up to date.
    How do I figure out what is wrong?  I'm currently using a 9-in portable monitor so I can use the laptop on the road.
    I've run some of the basic Lenovo diagnostics but it doesn't seem to find anything wrong.  Perhaps I'm not using the diagnostic software correctly.
    Any ideas?  Thanks

  • Display problems in IE, using Netlace Designs approach

    Display problems in IE, using Netlace Designs approach
    Could someone please look at
    www.tudo.co.uk/testing/magnification/
    I am trying to adjust some css code taken from Netlace
    Design's website
    for my purposes. The purpose is to enlarge an image on
    'hover' and to
    enlarge some text on 'hover'.
    What I have done works all right in Mozilla/Seamonkey.
    However, in IE,
    the 'text enlargement' does not work at all
    and when I am enlarging the image there is ***in IE*** a
    large grey
    surplus area at the bottom, which looks like a background
    area which has
    turned out to have too much height. I want to get rid of that
    superfluous grey area.
    How can I make sure it works in BOTH Mozilla and in IE?
    Thanks for your help.

    Hi ijmari,
    I checked out that page and don't see any Spry menubar in it.
    I'm assuming you've reverted back or removed it.
    If you still need/want help, please post the URL to the page
    that uses the menubar and demonstates the problem.
