Display value in MATLAB For loop on LabView

Hi guys,
I have a MATLAB script in my VI. The MATLAB script runs a For Loop. For each iteration of the For Loop, a variable say, count is incremented by 1.
From what I am experiencing, the MATLAB script only outputs the final value of count when the script is done running.
Is it possible to capture the value of count as each iteration is performed?
PS : Using a LabView For loop is not possible for my case. Running the MATLAB code is mandatory.
Thank you in advance!

When the Matlab script gets called, it's actually passing control over to the Matlab ActiveX server. Thus, LabVIEW has to wait until that's done before it can proceed. What you're asking for is interprocess communication. That doesn't come provided "out of the box". You have to create it yourself. Some ideas were suggested here: http://forums.ni.com/t5/LabVIEW/Labview-Matlab-Exchange-Data/td-p/1408054

• Returning multiple values with SELECT FOR LOOP

Would like to know how to do the following?
for x, y in (select name, street
from employees
where hire_date < sysdate - 100)
loop
In other words, is there a way to handle 2 (or more) values in a SELECT FOR LOOP structure? If not, then how to accomplish the same task.
The above does not work of course. :-)
Appreciate any and all advice.

Yes, just have one name in your for loop and that becomes the equivalent of a table name and reference the columns as that name.column name
for t in (select name, street
       from employees
      where hire_date < sysdate - 100)
loop
      dbms_output.put_line('name = '||t.name);
      dbms_output.put_line('street = '||t.street);
end loop;

SQL>To display characters as stars (as per the unix banner command) you need some sort of bitmap representation of your character set. As I've done, you can define your own, or you could probably get at the internal fonts somehow (I used to do this sort of thing in machine code back on the BBC Master, but not sure how you'd access the font/character set information from within Oracle)
If you actually want the H and the I displaying next to each other then that's a little more work, but you can have a go at that yourself.

• Is it possible to set multiple textfield value with a for=loop

• Please help..How to get the values from a for loop in  Action  class

I have alist of students say A(name, class, subjects, teacher).
I need to display all the items in the list A into JSP,
and then also the details of (name, class, subjects, teacher).
in the action class,
After getting the list of students from the database with ORM Layer(Toplink),
I set request.setAttribute("students",listOfStudents).
And then Iterate over the list and pass the parameter as student ID to the functions
getClass(), getSubject(), getTeacher().
Collection listOfStudents=getStudents();
         request.setAttribute("students",listOfStudent);
for (Iterator itr = lisOfStudents.iterator(); itr.hasNext();)
         Collection classOfStudent=getClass(studentID);
         request.setAttribute("class",classOfStudent);
         Collection subjectOfStudent=getSubject(studentID);
         request.setAttribute("subject",subjectOfStudent);
         Collection teacherOfStudent=getTeacher(studentID);
         request.setAttribute("teacher",teacherOfStudent);
mapping.findForward("listOfStudentDetails);
In JSP
<c:forEach var="stud" items="${students}">
//display name in Name Column
//one student may have more than one subject
         <c:forEach var="sub" items="${subject}">
         .......//display the subjects of the student
//and repeat the same for the other details
</c:forEach>
The problem I am facing is
If the last student has no subjects, no teachers
It is displaying null for all the other students.
I am understanding that the values are getting overwitten in the loop and the is frwede to JSP with the recentmost values for the attributes.
What could be a possible solution so that I retrieve the values for individual students and will be able to display on JSP?
((Please ignore any syntax in theabove example it is just a mock up created from the real problem)

The issue here is while you are retrieving all the details, you are consistently overwriting them in the request.setAttribute() call before you get to the JSP to display them.
Do you actually have a class/object called Student?
That object should have attributes for classes, subjects, teachers (all of which are lists apparently)
public class Student{
      String name;
      List classes;
      List subjects;
      List teachers;
      // appropriate getter/setter methods
}Then you load each student, and populate its individual lists.
That lets you pass the list of students, each student having its own lists for display.
Hope this helps,

hi,
i have 4 item ,Two Select List And Two Check Box .Class id And Section are select list and student id and subject id are check box .i want to insert More then one subject id in to table corresponding to more then one student id .
eg. when i select class id 1 and section A then student id of class 1 and section A comes into Student id(check box item ) and all subject corresponding to class 1 comes into subject id( check box item).
now i want to insert multiple selected subjects with respect to selected multiple student id in to table when i press submit Button.

CREATE TABLE "STUDENT_SUBJECT_DETAIL"

1. You have 2 loops, and they are both using the variable i as a counter.
2. Your insert needs to be in the form: insert into table (column names) values (values to insert)
3. Why not use a trigger to get the nextval from the sequence?

If you want a complete history of each time you go through the loop, you have to construct the history:
myLabel.setText("This");
MyLabel.setText(" is");
myLabel.setText(" good");
myLabel will contain only " good", since that is what myLabel was set to last, but if you want the history:
myLabel.setText("This");
MyLabel.setText(myLabel.getText() + " is");
myLabel.setText(myLabel.getText() + " good");
Should give you "This is good", as each time the contents of myLabel are retrieved and appended before myLabel is given the new set value.

• I'm creating an array using a for loop, how do I get the values outside the loop while it is running? thanks

I'm creating a set of values using a for loop and a shift register inside the loop. I want access to these values outside the loop as they are being created inside. When I connect a wire from the shift register to a display outside, it doesn't work. How do I do this? Thank you.

• For loop- seems to be just going to last value

Hi guys, carrying on from the thread I created yesterday I have managed to get the socket working between my server and my client, but I am having an issue when re-constructing a string that is being sent from the client to the server. I am talking about the for loop in line 151, which seems to just going straight to the last value of the for loop and thus the board isn't being reconstructed properly.
I'm including both the server and client code which just needs to compiled (host is set to localhost on port 4500) and you will see what I mean after inputting a move from the client. Can anyone spot the problem?

1) I don't think that even compiles. Since you're catching IOException, your throws clause is bogus--that method can never throw IOE.I have removed the try and catch statements in the main method. I cannot, however get rid of the throws IOException in the main method other my program won't compile.Right. Don't catch it, since you're not handling it. Just declare that it throws it.
Indeed, this is what I have done :)

3) Don't name methods the same as your class name.See answer to 4.
4) Start method names with lowercase letters.
try
serverSocket=new ServerSocket(portNo);
catch (IOException ex)
System.err.println("Could not create socket on port" +portNo);
System.exit(1);
ServerSocket is a part of the java.net package. I am just creating an instance of it. http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/docs/api/java/net/ServerSocket.html
I don't know what you're talking about. You had a class named Server and a method named Server. That's confusing.Changed- I didn't spot it, so I have named it startServer now.

5) There's almost no point to ever calling System.exit. Here, again, since you're not
actually handling the exception, don't bother catcing it.Sorry, but this was how I was taught when I started java. My understanding is that System.exit properly terminated applications so this freed up memory so it's abit of a habit of mine, is this wrong to do in this instance?Calling it in response to an exception is wrong. It's not that method's job to decide to shut down the VM. Just let the exception bubble up (or else handle it properly). You do not need to call System.exit to free up memory. It's freed up automatically when the VM exits. The OS takes care of that, without any help from you.Removed- thanks for clearing that up for me :)

line 151 of the server code or client code?Line 151 of my server code. My client is working fine up to this step of the programming I have done- it's just the server part I'm having issues with. You can compile and run the client fine- you can compile the server but as explained in the original post, I'm having a logical error when redrawing the board when it gets the 68 charecter string from the client (first 64 charecters are for the board, then the original position (x and y respectively), followed up the new position (x and y respectively again).
I'm including an updated version of the code, after all the comments above so we have an updated version for trying to solve the problem I'm having. The client code does not need to be updated as it has not changed yet, so you can use the code in the original post.

• How to get the elements out of a for loop simultaneously during the loop execution

Hi,
I am student. I would like to know how to get the counter values outside the For loop parallely while the loop runs rather that getting the finally value outside the For loop. Looking forward for answers.
Thanks,

Solved!
Go to Solution.

You could use a notifier (since it is a single value) or a reference (with a property node) to a control that gets the value elsewhere in another VI.
If it is within the same VI, you could use a property node (right click > create > property node > value) from the control within the same VI located outside the loop.
If you promiss NOT to abuse the use of Local Variables, you could use that to only write from ONE location within the For Loop to a control outside the loop, similar to the property node mentionned earlier.  (Of course, I will be struct by lightening for mentionning that and scolded by other LabVIEW coders for having a change of heart on the use of Locals....  Shivers are already crawling up my spine).
You could use a queue, but that might be an overkill, unless:  the count is generated faster than it is being read elsewhere...
As crossrulz mentionned, can you describe what you will be doing with the count?  Because synchronizing data (fresh / stale / etc) is very important within LabVIEW as it executes based on dataflow rather than a sequential order.
Hope this helps.
EDIT:
You have not fully provided the answer.  We figured that much of your code from your description, but what is reading the value of the count?  Is it in a separate loop?  If not, it may only deal with the first value, which is likely 0.  The proper advice depends on how you process the received data (count).

• Zero iteration for loop

Hi folks,
There's an old behavior that I'm pretty used to, but it still occasionally bites me (usually with references).  It happened again today, and it got me to wondering if it's really intended behavior.
If you pass a value into a zero iteration for loop, then send it out the other side, the value exiting the for loop is returned to default, not the value you fed in (see simple.vi, LV7.1).
Any ideas?

This is expected behavior...the workaround is to use shift registers to pass the value through instead of tunnels.  I believe this is discussed in the LabVIEW Help.

• Closing a serial port after executing a for loop of write and reads.

Hello,
Labview is opening and then closing each write to the port. I have tried to leave the close outside of the for loop, but labview wont allow it. What do I need to change to make all the writes and reads execute on 1 open and close of the serial port.?
Thanks.

J_es--
         The program that you posted looks to be ok for the most part, you might consider putting an open after your configure (but that's trivial). The other thing that is a minor issue is the loop tunnel coming out of your for loop is currently being auto-indexed.  This function is used to index data for each interation of the loop.  You are using a static address (not an array) and so you don't need this.  If you right-click and remove the auto-index the broken wire will go away. Other than that it should be ok.
         I would suggest looking at one of the shipping examples that come with LabVIEW.  "Basic Serial Read and Write" is essentially the same thing that you are doing and is tested here and might save you a bit of time.  Anyway, take a look if you have a second. Best of luck with your application!

• How to create parallel tasks using parallel for loops

Hi,
I am setting up a program that communicates with six logic controllers and has to read the system status every 100 ms. We are using OPC datasockets for this, and they appear a little slow.
I have created a uniform comm. method for all controllers, and now I find myself programming this method six times to communicate with each system. I am wondering if this could be done more elegant using the parallel for loop, in which case I would program an exchange once and then have six workers running simultaneously. Since a picture is more clear that a thousand words, what I am asking is this:
Is it possible to replace something like
by
and have this for loop running these tasks in parallel (on different cores / in different threads)?
I have configured the loop to create 8 instances at compile, so I would have 2 instances surplus available at runtime if I find I need an additional system.
The benefits of the method show in the second picture to me are:
* takes less space
* modifications have to be made only once
* less blocks, wires and stuff makes it more clear what's going on.
* flexibility in the actual number of tasks running (8 instances available at runtime)
* if more tasks are required, I need only to update the maximum number of instances and recompile, i.e. no cutting and pasting required.
Unfortunately, I don't have those system available yet, so there's no way to test this. Yet, I would like to know if the above works as I expect - unfortunately the labview help is not completely clear to me on this.
Best regards,
Frans
Solved!
Go to Solution.

Dear mfletcher,
First of all: thanks for confirming that my intuition was right in this case.
As for your question on the help: below is a copy/paste from the help on the 'configure parallelism dialog box'
Number of generated parallel loop instances—Determines the number of For Loop instances LabVIEW generates at compile time. The Number of generated parallel loop instances should equal the number of logical processors on which you expect the VI to execute. If you plan to distribute the VI to multiple computers, Number of generated parallel loop instances should equal the maximum number of logical processors you expect any of those computers to ever contain. Use the parallel instances terminal on the For Loop to specify how many of the generated instances to use at run time. If you wire a larger number to the parallel instances terminal than you specify in this dialog box, LabVIEW only executes as many loop instances as you specify here.The reason for me doubting if what I programmed would work the way I intended lies in the fact that the help only mentions processors here, which would be interpreted as actual cores. Thus on a dual core machine, the number should be 2.
I think it would be helpful to mention something about threads here, because in some case one would like to have more parallel threads than there are cores in a system.
In mu case I would like to create six threads, which on my dual core processor would be spread over only two cores. Then these six threads run in parallel.I know that in case of heavy math that would not help, but since I am doing communications, which have timeouts and such, and that probably runs smoother in six parallel tasks even though I only have two cores.
Hope this helps in improving the help of the for loop.
Regards,
Frans
