Displaying images in an applet

Hi everyone.
I have been developing an applet game in the applet viewer - which it works fine in. But when I open it in a browser, everything is displayed appart from the image - can't figure out why!
Is it the way I am adding images to the display, this is how i am doing it at the moment....
public static ImageIcon gameInfoPanelTitle = new ImageIcon("images/gameinformation.jpg");
JLabel gameInfoPanelIntro = new JLabel(gameInfoPanelTitle);
contentPane.add(gameInfoPanelIntro);thanks in advance guys!

Check your Sun Java console. It may be generating NullPointerExceptions (or some other exception) when loading the images. This could be a result of the file path. When you access it using a browser, you're not downloading it across a network, from, say, a server, are you? That would definitely cause that problem.

  • Display images in applets

    hi every body.
    I want to display images in an applet when i invoke it from the jsp page . it is not working. the code is as follows.
    <html>
    <body>
    <jsp:plugin type = "applet"
         code ="Welcome.class"
         width="475" height = "350" >
    </jsp:plugin>
    </body>
    </html>
    while the code of "Welcome.java" is as follows.
    ImageIcon image = new ImageIcon("aa.gif");
    JButton button = new JButton(image);
    i have placed the aa.gif file in the same directory where i placed the Welcome.class and the jsp file.
    when i run this program the i recieve the message that the applet is not loaded.
    can some body help me how to place images in applets.
    thanks.

    You should be able to test that applet on you hard drive first. If it works check the case of the image file.
    Web servers look for case. If you are asking for ImageIcon img = new ImageIcon("abc.gif") and what is loaded on your web server is "abc.GIF" it won't find it. Same goes for basic HTML tags like
    <Img src=abc.gif>. But it will find it on you hard drive when you run the applet there.

    import java.net.*;
    public class DisplayImage extends JApplet
         public void init()

  • Image Processing using applet

    hi,
    I am doing my project in java.My project is " Online Image Processing ".
    I did some processing like gray Scale, Invert , Contrast and rotate 90 degree.
    can any one help me for
    1. I vant to rotate Image to 1 degree...
    2. How to get Blure and Sharpen image?
    3. Can i append frames inside applet?
    plz Help me ..

    I did not read the content of the links (To lazy) just found them for you.
    You say that the examples use frames:
    this should not be a problem as the required code is the same.
    Tip:
    How whould you display a image in a frame?
    How whould you display a image in a applet?
    Concentrate on the above 2 and simply change the code accordingly.
    This should be easy also try asking google.

  • Help with displaying images (gif, jpeg...) within a JFrame (or similar)

    Hi all,
    i'm new to the forum and i'll be granted if you kind gentlemen/women could use some advices for my gui home application.
    My purpose is to display a static image in a container (i'd prefer to use javax.swing objects, but if you think that java.awt is more suitable for my app, please feel free to tell me about...). I used a modified code from one of the Java Tutorial's examples, tht actually is an applet and displays images as it is using the paint() method. I just can't realize how to set the GraphicContext in a JFrame or a JPanel to contain the image to display, without using applets. Following part of the code I use (a JButton will fire JApplet start, JApplet is another class file called Apple.java):
    class DMToolz extends JFrame {
         private static final long serialVersionUID = 1L;
         private JPanel jContentPane = null;
         private JButton jButton = null;
         private JComboBox jComboBox = null;
         private JMenuItem jMenuItem = null;
         private JMenuBar jJMenuBar = null;
         private JMenu jMenu = null;
         private JMenu jMenu1 = null;
         public int w=10, h=10;
         public String filename;
          * @throws HeadlessException
         public DMToolz() throws HeadlessException {
              // TODO Auto-generated constructor stub
              super();
              initialize();
         public DMToolz(String arg0) throws HeadlessException {
              super(arg0);
              // TODO Auto-generated constructor stub
              initialize();
          * This method initializes jButton
          * @return javax.swing.JButton
         private JButton getJButton() {
              if (jButton == null) {
                   jButton = new JButton();
                   jButton.setBounds(new Rectangle(723, 505, 103, 38));
                   jButton.setText("UrcaMado'");

    Thanks in advance.

    Read the Swing tutorial on "How to Use Labels" or "How to Use Icons" for working examples:
    http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/uiswing/TOC.html
    By the way you should never override the paint() method. Custom painting (not required in this case) is done by overriding the paintComponent(...) method in Swing. Overriding paint() is an old AWT trick.

  • Overlapping images in an applet

    Hello,
    I'm a Java beginner and I would like to write a small applet for a web page. My goal is the following:
    The webpage has a background image. So far no problem.The applet should also show a small menu- which is also no greater problem.
    Further on, every time the mouse cursor is rolling over a menu image, another image should be displayed overlapping the background image.
    This is a problem, because I cannot remove the displayed image without
    repainting the entire background image.
    I am looking for a method, which can store a well defined image area so I can restore it later.
    Thank you for any help !
    Stephan

    Put your images (rollover or whatever) on a new component - in swing you can use a JLabel - or, I'll assume awt here as its an applet, you can use a Panel. eg
    MouseEntered()
    inside your area
    add(myPanel)
    MouseExited()
    your area
    remove(myPanel)
    In the panel you'll need to explicity call on java.awt.Graphics with
    Graphics g = myPanel.getGraphics();

  • Using Java Advanced Imaging (JAI) in Applet

    I'm trying to port a JAI user interface to an applet using Apache Tomcat. When I try to display an image in the applet I get an exception and I have no idea what the cause is. I've opened up security completely (temporarily) to ensure that I'm not getting an error due to an applet security issue. Consequently, I'm able to browse/open files from the client.
    Here is the stack for the error I'm getting. Can anyone tell me what is causing this error? Thanks.

  • Pb displaying image in a canva with jpg format

    I have an applet that displays images in a canva by pushing buttons. It works very well with gif image but bad with jpg image.
    Coincidence or not ? I don't know.
    What I know that I use the same method painting jpg or gif image
    (first changing image name then calling mycanva.validate() and mycanva.repaint() and of course mycanva paint method contains g.drawimage(myimage,0,0,200,200,this) )
    With jpg image what happens is the image is not completly painted (sometime half painted, sometime less than half painted) and if I do reload the browser the image is very well displayed...
    has someone an idea ?
    many thanks

    try your app on another computer and see if it does the same thing. I had a very similar problem and it turned out to be my video driver was not driving my video properly. I changed/updated the video driver and my problems were totally solved.

    ive seen this one many times and it dosent work for me! Shouldnt the second parameter of the getImage(...) method not include the 'http://..." part as that what getDocumentBase() is for, returning the URL of the page the applet is embedded in? I have tried using code like this and event getting a printout of the doc/code base into the console to make sure my images are in the right place (.gif images), and nothing's happening, null pointer every time!
    {code}
    Image image;
    public void init() {
    // Load image
    image = getImage(getDocumentBase(), "http://hostname/image.gif");
    public void paint(Graphics g) {
    // Draw image
    g.drawImage(image, 0, 0, this);
    {code}
    ps this code is from the site mentioned above

  • Help!  Image in an applet

    Hi, I'm having some trouble displaying an image in my applet. I drew something in MS Paint, saved it as a gif, and want to draw it in my applet. I have tried using two methods to load the image:
    map = getImage(getCodeBase(),"cheese.gif");
    and
    Toolkit toolkit = getToolkit();
    map =toolkit.createImage("cheese.gif");
    System.out.println(map == null) prints false for both methods, meaning that (I assume) Java has found and knows what .gif I am requesting. I am drawing the image with
    g.drawImage(map, 25, 150, this);
    I have tried replacing "this" with "getContentPane()" as well, but that was fruitless.
    I think am importing all the right classes, like java.awt.*.
    My applet extends JApplet (I don't know this has anything to do with it). I would post the entire applet, but it is quite lengthy at the moment. Any help would be much appreciated, thanks in advance, and sorry about the long post. If anyone needs anymore information to help me, I will be glad to help.

    Try this html and code:
    <HTML>
        <HEAD>
            <TITLE></TITLE
        </HEAD>
        <BODY>
            <APPLET CODE="ImgApplet.class" width=500 height=500>
            <PARAM NAME=pic VALUE="ImgAppletPic.jpg">
            </APPLET>
        </BODY>
    </HTML>
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.applet.*;
    public class ImgApplet extends Applet {
        // var to store the pic;
        Image pic;
            // retrieving image;
            public void init() {
            pic = getImage(getCodeBase(), getParameter("pic"));
            public void paint(Graphics g) {
            g.drawImage(pic, 10, 10, this);
    }

  • Displaying image from binary file

    I am converting a image file(jpg) into a binary file and sending it. In the receiving side i got back the binary file and want to display the image in the applet or store the image in a file. while trying to do this i am not able to read the image from the buffer. Below here i have given my code.
    File f= new File("image.jpg");
           FileInputStream fis = new FileInputStream(f);
           byte [] buffer = new byte[(int)f.length()];
           fis.read(buffer,0,buffer.length);
           fis.close();
          File f1 = new File("input.txt");
          int length = buffer.length;
          PrintWriter pw;
           pw = new PrintWriter(new BufferedWriter(new FileWriter(f1)));
          for(int i=0;i<length;i++)
              pw.println(Integer.toBinaryString(buffer));
    pw.flush();
    pw.close();
    converting back to image i get error
    File f1 = new File("inp.txt");
    FileInputStream fis = new FileInputStream(f1);
    buffer = new byte[(int)f1.length()];
    fis.read(buffer,0,buffer.length);
    Toolkit tk = Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit();
    img = tk.createImage(buffer);
    Reply me as early as possible.thanks.

    You have two glaring problems here.
    Firstly, you are writing via writers, which are intended for text and are probably corrupting your data. You want to be using a FileOutputStream.
    Secondly, when reading in you are not checking the number of bytes read and may well not be fully populating your array. You want to change your reading code to something like this,
        buffer = new byte[(int)f1.length()];
        int read = 0;
        while (f1.available() > 0)
            read += fis.read(buffer, read, buffer.length - read);
        }

  • How to display image in JFrame

    i am comfortable with displaying an image in applets ,but i am not able to display image in JFrames
    i used Image img=getImage(getDocumentBase(),"sample.jpg");its displaying an error cant find symbol getDocumentBase()

    It is a method of Applet. If you have a question of what methods
    are available in a given class, the very first thing you should do is check the API:
    http://java.sun.com/javase/6/docs/api/
    Take a look at the code in reply #2: http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5152350
