DivX and Mpeg4

I have a question about the terms DivX and Mpeg4. I think it's like that Mpeg4 is a standard and DivX is a codec following this standard. Is this correct?
If the answer to the above question is yes does DivX 6.0 support MPEG 100% or does it contain more or less things. The reason I wonder is because Quicktime Pro say that they support Mpeg4 but i can't get Quicktime to play my DivX movies. Why is this?
I use subtitle tracks included in the DivX files. In the DivX player I can then choose to display or not display the subtitles. I have not seen any other Mpeg4 encoder that allows this. Is this not MPEG4 standard then?
If I want to convert DVD to a single file format (including subtitles, preferably with the option to shut them on and off but if this not is possible then make them a part of the movie track) other then DivX 6.0 that Quicktime plays (MOV or other MPEG formats) what would you recommend. I want to keep the reducing of quality and/or frame size to a minimum. I have seen encoders (AVS) that do this for mpeg2 but then the frame size is forced to half of the original size.

Divx is not standard MPEG-4; it's a unique format. Since QuickTime does not natively handle Divx, that's why your Divx videos won't play.

I can't export to DivX and XVID files

Hi all,
although I have installed the DivX and XVID Codecs, iMovie 08 (7.1.4) won't show me the Option to export Video with these codecs. If I choose to export with Quicktime, the only options I can choose are:
3G, Apple TV, AVI, Bildsequenz, DV Stream, FLC, iPhone, iPod, MPEG4, QuickTime Film, AIFF, AU, Wave
I also cannot import a XVID avi file to iMovie, although the Quicktime Player plays it allright. Did I understand anything wrong or should both work? What's going wrong?
My preferred workflow would be:
1.) Import AVCHD Files from my Panasonic HDC SD5 Camera in HD Quality
2.) Cut it with iMovie 08
3.) Export the new Video to either a DivX or XVid HD avi-File.
What can I do to get this working? I am using Mac OS X 10.5.4 on a Macbook 2,4 Ghz Core 2 Duo with 2 GB RAM.

I want to have the possibility to do a little more editing than I could do in QuickTime Pro. So what would be the suggested workflow for me without buying other software? Something like this?
What you can do is:
1) let iMovie '08 import the AVCHD to a an iMovie '08 Event Folder,
2) open the iMovie '08 Event Folder AIC/AIFF files in iMovie HD,
3) edit in iMovie HD,
4) and export the edited iMovie HD project as XviD or DivX.
Any editing done in iMovie '08 is done "by reference" and does not exist as a physical rendered file until or unless you output your iMovie '08 project by sharing or exporting. To do so is to simply go from one intermediate file to another which I assume is what you want to avoid. If you want to avoid this, simply open the AIC/AIFF file directly in iMovie HD as an HD project (AIC/AIFF files import as AIC/AIFF).

Imovie 08 can't import divx, avi, mpeg4, affi ect

I have been working on this problem for 1 week now in correspondence with this forum and calling apple representatives. I have a Samsung camcorder with SD card that I uploaded my video's onto my hard drive. My imovie 7.1.2 won't let me transfer in any media "even after purchasing QT pro and converting the files into divx, avi, mpeg4, affi, ect... What do I do to import media into imovie 08 " which I am quickly finding out is much inefficient than the previous versions"

If the card isn't being recognized as a camcorder and you want to go the manual conversion route, convert to DV, AIC, M-JPEG, Photo-JPEG, MPEG-4, or H.264 video with compatible Uncompressed, AIFF/Linear PCM, DV, AAC, or similar audio. Note that there are many forms of MPEG-4 so don't use a proprietary (DivX, 3ivX, etc.) or exotic ones with unusual settings.

Quicktime and Divx and MPEG 2

After months of nagging from my IT colleagues I have just bought a Mac mini with Leopard and am just getting to grips with how it functions. (very impressed to date now I have a "proper operting system" :o) )I am using it in my lounge connected to my Plasma TV. I have 4 other Windows XP machines which share all their "My Documents" on a Buffalo Link Station which is backed up to Buffalo Drivestation. I am looking for similar functionality to WMP 11 and would like to know if there is any way that Quicktime can show DIVX's and MPEG2's in the file list so I can use Frontrow from teh remote as the interface is so slick. I have the MPGE2 codec and DIVX installed. The MPEG codec does show lines (maybe interlacing) with any sideways movement when viewing my my raw MPGE2 cam corder videos. This doesn't happy with XP and WM11 however I can live with that as the MAc Mini is more convenient than a PC in the lounge.
Maybe I need something other than Quicktime? I was a bit nervous about posting here for the first time incase I get "abuse" but my other Mac users assure somebody will know the answer. I have some other questions so I'll post these on the site in the relevent areas now I'm registered.

If these Mpeg-2 videos are going to be on your hard drive. Look into this player, VLC. You can have a playlist of your videos. The de-interlacing is great! It can all so play Divx and dvd's. It's free Here's VLC site...

If your going to play Divx in Quicktime I would get this component (Perian) for Quicktime... This component will play Divx better in Quicktime (and other formats that Quicktime can't pay).

Can I use XAVC-s 4K, AVCHD and Mpeg4 (Sony HDR CX900) in Première Pro CS6 in EUROPE?

I live in Belgium, Europe. I use a Sony DCR TR 64E high definition camera and want to upgrade to full HD 1920 x 1080. The Sony HDR CX900 videocamera uses different formats: XAVC-S 4K 50/25/24 fps, AVCHD 50/24/50i fps and MPEG4 1280x720 25 fps. Can I use all these formats in Première Pro CS6 and export it to DVD. Will Première accept these formats and will there be no conflicts exporting to DVD to be used in Europe?

It seems that we have to wait for the new presets such as XAVC, XAVC-S, 4k etc until Première Pro adds them in an upgrade.
So, is it correct to say that only AVCHD is left for full hd 1920x1080? For as much as I know, MPEG4 has only 1280x720. The remaining question is: how can I know, or setup the camera, to produce in AVCHD? And finally, will there be no conflict or loss of quality with European standard PAL for DVD which uses 25 fps, knowing that AVCHD uses 50, 24 and 50i?

I can't see the bar which contains play, stop button on Youtube. Help me!!! Just happen with firefox and chrome after install DivX and I had removed DivX.

I had installed DivX and it includes DivX Web player but, when i remove it, the problem happend. When I click on a video, the bar which contains play, stop... buttons is there. But when the video nearly play, it disapears. The problem just happen with Firefox and Chrome, but it doesn't mean with IE. Help me plz, I hate using IE just love FF but the problem prevent me from watching video on youtbe which is very terrible with me.

.mov and .mpeg4 videos will not sync with iphone4

I have tried getting some modest sized (<1GB) videos on to my iPhone4 using iTunes 9. I have tried both .mov and .mpeg4 formats which are supported in the tech specs. Using both sync, and manual management modes, I get the error:"MOVIE X was not copied to this iphone because it can not be played on this iphone."

The movies were recorded on a Kodak ZI8. On a whim I tried WVGA, HD720P (30), and 1080P (30). An 8 second WVGA was able to be transferred. The 780P and 1080P formats would not copy. The other projects I tried to copy over were compilations primarily WVGA, that although they showed up as .mov, I am guessing they carried along some artifacts of other formats (stills?).
The 720P should be supported although I can't honestly validate the "Main Profile level 3.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz" requirement. Greek to me.
I am a bit surprised that the state of the art Iphone is unable to handle videos that are easily uploaded to facebook. c-est la vie.

Workflow for editing HD PAL .m2ts and .mpeg4 on Final Cut

I have PAL HD files in two formats (.m2ts and .mpeg4) from 2 cameras of the same event. These files need to be converted to a mutually compatible format to edit in Final Cut (Studio 2). I would appreciate knowledgeable recommendations on a work flow, including the best converter(s) to use.

I could not load either file format into MPEG-Streamclip. Do you think there is any better media converter than the VoltaicHD? I am trying it out and it is the best I have seen. Clean and the controls for the Quicktime .mov file out. Although, when I play output clips set to digitize at 25 frames, they are all reported as 29.97 -- is this a bug?

Divx and other media related plugins always crash and/or no longer work, please help

Why is nothing of divx seems to work anymore? Every time i try to watch a video online using a divx site or site that uses a divx player, i get the message
"divx plus web player pluging has cashed, send crash report"
I send it - then am offered the option to reload the page once reloaded a press play the player then says connecting and then crashes again!!!

None of the divx plugins are recognised anymore and the divx web player add on is marked as incompatible, and there is not an option to enable it! im using windows vista home basic 32-bit operating system, & the new version of firefox.
Its really annoying that these extensions and plugins no longer work crash and/or are no longer recognised espcially considering firefox insisted we upgrade for security issue etc and that 3.6 wont be kept up to date any more, I want reinstall the 3.6 version but am worried about security issues now.
will the divx plugin and addon/extension be added to this new version anytime soon if not what can i do to enable me to watch videos without the plugin crashing ? (i have updated all the pluggins but the problem still occurs) ?

I am having the same problems as well. Every time I turned around there was a new version of Firefox 8.0. Prior to the constant updating of Firefox I was able to watch movies from Stagevu and Veehd and now because of the new Firefox I cannot watch any movies. I also tried the VLC plugin and that constantly crashes as well as the DivX Web Player. I read so many complaints and no one from Firefox or any of the other browser is giving any of their constituents or customers whatever you want to call us any solutions to the problem and I am beginning to get a little frustrated. I have tried all of the other browsers like the Internet Explorer and Google Chrome and I still come up with the same problem.

Creating DVD movies from divx and srt subs...

Hi people!
Just want to create a dvd movie with a divx movie and the subtitles in srt file format i downloaded,so to play it on my dvd player...
I suppose i must convert the movie first but i don't know to what format,with what program and the command i must use!
Afterwards how can i burn it to a dvd?For burning cds i am using k3b...Suppose i can do that job by selecting "New video DVD project",right?

spumux, part of dvdauthor, is what you need to mux in the subtitles:

That will generate a complete mpeg movie. From there, dvdauthor will produce the correct files for a DVD filesystem. I haven't tried to produce a DVD in well over a year, and I've never worked with subtitles, so I can't get real specific.
So, first I would look into spumux and get that part of your movie handled. Then I'd go back to the Gentoo documentation to learn dvdauthor for the final output. I'm sure there must be some sort of GUI program to make this process a lot easier, but I don't know of any.

Flip Video and mpeg4 avi

I'm interested in getting my daughter a Flip Video for an upcoming trip overseas, but I'm unsure whether she'll be able to use it with our Macs. She has a one year old Mac Book w/ an Intel chip. No problem, I think. Our iMac is older, using a Power PC chip. We currently run 10.4.11. Will she be able to work with the mpeg4 AVI files the Flip generates on iMovie, and will we be able to view them on our non-Intel machine? Thanks for your input!

the included application with the flip work on os x to upload the videos to youtube to share them. the only thing that keeps you from viewing them on any computer is the codec. luckily the flip includes an installer to install just the codec so you can view them on any computer in your house without having to convert or upload them.
the flip video management application is a PPC app (so it would run natively on your imac and in rosetta on her macbook)
i don't use the app that much really though. you can get to the movie files directly on the flip because it mounts on your desktop as a flash drive. copy the files over to your desktop and you can export them using quicktime pro to a more "standard" format and then import them into imovie.
i recently purchased an elgato h.264 turbo and it does a perfect job of converting them from the .avi format (used on the flip itself) to .mp4 (a more standard format) that can be shared and edited.
overall, i've enjoyed my flip and glad i got it (for my birthday) and would recommend it to anyone who wants to be able to shoot videos with the idea of sharing them on the computer and/or internet (youtube)

[PLEASE HELP!] .m4v and .mpeg4 Audio Export problems (QT 7 pro)

When i try to export any clips to .m4v (movie to ipod) or .mpeg4 the video is exported but has no sound. When i select "export to .mpeg4" and click on "options" it says "audio: no audio track in source movie". This is the same message displayed on all the clips i have tried to export.
Does anyone know how i can record the audio for .m4v files or .mpeg4 files?

I'm using Quicktime Pro v 7.0.4 on Mac. I tried exporting Quictime mpeg4 to iPod format and get only video but no audio! And I'm talking Apple all the way. These files were made from a Sony digital camera with the digital video record option.
Believe most (if not all) Sony digital cameras still use MPEG video format. As such, the files contain a "muxed" stream consisting of blocks of video data interspersed with blocks of audio data for A/V synchronization. As Kirk alluded to above, QT is a "frame-to-frame" sync application and does not fully support "muxed" (e.g., MPEG1, MPEG2, VOB, some AVI, MJPEG, etc.) formats.
I do use a 3rd party program called Snapz Pro X to capture to .mpeg4 and these files export just fine to iPod format!
Good solution for capturing streamed video but not the best here. As you suggested, use a third party, MPEG based application like iSquint (free) or, better yet, MPEG Streamclip (free) for one-step conversion with audio.
I tried to convert the mpeg4 format to MOV format and then convert MOV to m4v but no audio there.
No surprise here. If you check your first MPEG4 file you will see that no audio track was present following the initial conversion and no amount of further conversions will add a non-existent audio track.

What is DIVx and why all of a sudden it says it isn't fully downloaded and I can't watch trailers or certain videos?

Why am I not able to view trailers from the Apple website or watch tutorial videos any longer. I keep getting a message that DIVx is not fully downloaded, but I have tried uninstalling and re-installing several times. What can I be doing wrong?

It is a Divx extension you might have added by mistake. All you have to do is disable. This also happened to me and it took me a day to find out! To edit the extension open Safari, then click Safari on the top bar, a window will pop up in that find extensions. Click on the DivX extension and then disable it. The DivX extension I had was this.

Sony Vegas and MPEG4

Can Sony Vegas 7 edit the MPEG4 video files recorded from 5th gen nano, or does it need a plugin?

To capture video using the A2 VE you'll need to use Ulead to do the initial capture. Once done and the video is on the PC you can then use your preferred Video creation tools to manipulate the file(s).

FrontRow, Divx, and QuickTime

Hey:
I have a lot of anime that is encoded in the divx format. I would like to play these through Front Row but have not been able to. I'm able to play them in Quicktime by it self, but not throught Front Row.
It was to my understanding that Front Row used Quicktime to play movies and other media like it, so I can't figure out why it isn't working in Front Row.

You need to install the codec for DIVX Videos available here: http://community.divx.com/labs/viewEntry.php?id=157&cid=3
Download it, install it, log-out your session or reboot (for the effects to apply), and you'll be able to play it in Quicktime and subsequently in frontrow.
