DNG SDK - What a Complete MESS !!!!!

Hi - and sorry for this to be HIGHLY infriendly message
I have downloaded and installed ALL latest greatest of anything pertaining to the DNG SDK -
Followed ANY read me, configure, make, make install files available there.
Installed CMAKE and everything else....
I am on OS X 10.9 and USE the xCODE version of Mavericks
I am developing MANY different things and NEVER have problems.
I have in my life NEVER exprienced something as cumbersome and clumsy as this. NEVER!!!!
I am trying to compile/build the inlcuded and generic dng_validate project. And this proves to be IMPOSSILBE.
Simply put. I cannot figure it out. And I cannot do more that to follow the instructions provided in the SDK.
This is incredible and I am missing the words to describe anger I am feeling.
I realize this sdk is something that adobe cares nothing about - hence all the problems adobe are having with their own apps, which arent even capable of reading DNGs correctly...
To whomever, maintaining this SDK ---- You are doing a really bad job at it !!!!
Regards
Morten

The SDK is from 2 years ago. XCode has changed quite a bit since then, and the build settings are therefore a bit out of date.
It's not any different with other projects in XCode that haven't kept up with the changes to the tool chain.
It's not easy/trivial, but it is far from impossible to get this to build if you have experience writing your own code and not just building other people's code.
You also have to make sure you are using the correct versions of the XMP SDK and the third party code.

  • Why do I keep getting problems with Apple not recognizing my email password? This suddenly started and just reminds me of the mess that mobileme was. Calendar dev also is not working. What a complete mess!

Can't access my email - endless messages saying password is wrong, which it is not. Mobileme all over again. I now need to forward all Apple mail to GMail, which is how an email system should work. Same is true with the calendar - a complete mess on the integration with my Google calendar.
This is really, really a pain!!

OK this is Cormacin Texas - these idiots have put me through the hoops, effectively locking me out of the support forum. Anyway I've solved the problem - it took 3.5 hours, involved a trip to the Genius bar at the local Apple store, and one and a half hours escalating through the dial-in help support - which was about the only thing the Genius was good for.
What you need to know is:
    1. Apple are having problems with their servers, but have not published the fact - we've all wasted a lot of time because these guys want to keep their Customer Sat scores high, I guess. (I'm starting to feel like one of their Chinese factory workers!)
    2. This server problem is compounded by the fact that it only affects a few random servers
    3. It in turn can lead to problems sending emails which require you to change your Apple Mail password, and in my case surgically remove bad records for various hidden email and library folders. (Good luck with that!)
So, a problem that they hide, a knock-on set of work that the problem indirectly causes, which they also hide, and a support structure that is geared for hardware, not the services that they are now selling.
My suggestion is to change your mail password using the web (icloud.com) access to Mail and see if that works. After that, remove and reset up your Apple email (Preferences) and pray that you don't have to join endless telephone answering lines where some of the folks will cut you off because they can't be arsed.
The two guys that finally helped me were brilliant, knew their stuff and could not have done a better job. The key guy was Danny - if you get him, your golden!

  • Converting RAW to DNG! What are the advantages / disadvantages?

I have Canon cameras and shoot RAW, but the question itself is surely also valid for Nikon, Sony or other brand-shooters.
When importing my pictures to Lightroom, I could convert them to DNG but didn't do this up to now, because I do not know what I loose. I suppose that I loose the ability to process my files with DPP, but I will not do that anyhow. I can appreciate the advantage of having the file in an open documented format, where even I could easily write a reader for it. So the answer should not be what I can easily find in the Adobe introduction into DNG. I have also the DNG specification in front of me, and I can read it, because I once wrote a program to read TIFF files. I understand that I could add the original RAW image stream, but I do not want using up the space wasted for this. I know, that all development parameters used for the specific RAW image can be written with the image file instead of having those stored in a database or a side-car-file.
But what I did not find until now a technical explanation about what happens during the convert. Who can enlighten me? Where do I find the missing technical explanations?
    Thanks in advance!
    Lucien.

Based on the title of the thread and your initial post, it seems like your question had a lot of
"What are the advantages / disadvantages?"
in it, and only a little
"What happens at a technical level when converting"
But if you want more detailed info about conversion, and you have the aptitude to understand, I recommend doing what Lr5user-pt recommended:
Download the DNG SDK and dig in - all your questions will be answered (and if not, you can also ask DNG-specific technical questions in the DNG forum).
As far as my "sources" regarding the technical summary I presented, they are many and varied, none of which are the DNG SDK. In other words, my knowledge is based more on experience over the years - I don't know all the details under the hood..
    Some experiments to consider doing:
    * exiftool (-X) a proprietary raw file, then convert to DNG and repeat.
    * open a proprietary raw in a DNG-supporting software of your choice and inspect metadata, then open the converted DNG in the same software and re-evaluate. Compare to proprietary raw opened in manufacturer's software, and what you see via exiftool.
Tom Hogarty (Lightroom project manager) and others who know have said: "DNG converter discards no metadata", and I believe them, but haven't verified for myself. Yet once proprietary metadata is in the DNG, most (all?) software will no longer decode it. A prime example is focus points - presumably they're there, but once converted, focus point feature is no longer supported. The amount of work required to support converted focus point data is unknown (to me), but as far as I know, no software has ventured to do it. If you want focus points, don't convert.
If you want the truth, I think for most people it's "not wise" to convert to DNG. Why? because unless you already know why you are converting (and need to convert to satisfy your goals), or you already know why you must NOT convert (e.g. so you can open the files in mfr.software, and see focus points..) the pros and cons are likely to be a wash, and now you have twice the number of raw files, unless you discard your originals, which would be REALLY "not wise", in my opinion. If you find the notion of "openly documented format" sufficiently compelling, then, ya know, more power to ya (I don't judge..), but there is no guarantee that DNG will outlast NEF (or..), and if it does, there will be ample opportunity to convert before you're left in the cold, unless you're stuck in a cave for a few decades, or are kryogenically frozen.. True, if all companies die, you may be able to write your own DNG converter (/reader), given the DNG documentation, but FWIW, NEF is also thoroughly documented (document is in freely downloadable SDK), and reverse engineerable (that's what Adobe and Phil Harvey does), so you could also write your own NEF converter, so not really a very compelling argument, not this year anyway - ask me again in a few decades..
If filesize is a main draw, then be sure NOT to save the hi-rez previews in your DNGs, otherwise you've just lost most or all of the filesize advantage. Also, you can strip previews from some proprietary raws (e.g. NEFs), to reduce filesize.
Personally, if DNG supported sidecars, I would be more likely to convert, because file-management/backup is only an issue if you "forget" about xmp sidecars (and I do not forget), and I'd rather have my xmp in separate ready-to-read xml text files, rather than embedded in binary files, but hey, that's me..
PS - I always use/encourage-others-to-use DNG when distributing raws to others for use in Adobe software, so xmp is not separate and can not get lost.
PPS - proprietary raws and dngs are both just glorified tiff files - raw data, previews, and metadata..
Don't get me wrong: I am NOT anti-DNG, and in fact - just the opposite: I am PRO dng, it's just that I wouldn't (don't) convert my own raws to DNG at this point. If you find the reasons to convert now are sufficiently compelling, you have my complete support and cooperation, fwiw..
    Cheers,
    Rob

hey, ive gotta problem. when i listen to my songs on iTunes, not the store, but my library, they are fine. when i listen on my iPod, they are completely messed up! what i mean is that when played on my ipod, the beat (or rest of music besides the lyrics) is louder than normal, and i can barely hear the lyrics. whats going on and how do i fix it?
    thnx alot for the help

Please set the EQ setting on you iPod to "flat". It does not help, please restore your iPod to factory settings

Once completed, update your iPod with your iTunes

  • My music is completely messed up: many songs shortened to 3:01, many songs in different versions. Should I delete all and reimport all my purchases? Or is there a more elgant way of cleaning the media center?

I think you should just rebuild your library.
Clear it out, then drag all the song files back in. You'll lose your ratings and playcounts, etc but I don't see what else you can do.

  • DNG SDK build project cannot find the xml sdk

On win7/x64.  Installed dng sdk and all dependencies per the readme files.  xml sdk built OK with vc10 express, as 64 bit static and dll.
But the vc solution for dng_validate has incorrect names for the xml sdk build projects, so it cannot find those components.  Specifically it looks for "..\..\..\xmp_sdk\build\vc\XMPCore.vcxproj".  the actual paths in the xmp sdk are different and longer, like "..\..\..\xmp_sdk\build\vc10\dynamic\windows_x64".  Moreover there is no XMPCore.vcxproj there.
I suppose the real problem may be that the dng sdk project is trying to build it as .net managed code, while the xml sdk was built as open code.  So I guess what I am looking for is a way to build the dng sdk open.

I would confirm your post, but I have not found a solution. I wish someone at Adobe would look into this.

  • Build DNG SDK on Mac with XCode 6.2

    Hello everyone,
I am trying to build the DNG_SDK Version 1.4 with XCode 6.2. I have downloaded all the third party libraries for xmp and dng sdk. After linking errors with the current xmp sdk 201412, I tried to compile DNG_SDK with XMP SDK Version CS6. The XMP Subproject is found in my DNG_SDK and is build successfully.

The download link is presently broken but it looks like SDK will be out with Lr4.1:

The pdf guide is there (link not broken).
Once officially released (and/or download link fixed), I will try to do a thorough comparison of what's been added or changed and post here.
For now, just from briefly skimming the pdf guide & api doc, I gleaned:
    1. Pretty lean release - keep expectations low...
That said, here are some enhancements I noticed:
    * Plugin startup / shutdown.
    * Video
    * Scrolled View - this is probably the most exciting enhancement, to me.
    * Simple LIst - supporting multiple selection, my #2 choice, excitement-wise, so far.
    * Also note the timeout params on with-do methods of catalog.
    * Plus there are the other things mentioned in another thread: e.g. catalog_photo component is official now.
My #1 feature request was denied: numeric and date types for plugin metadata.
    Do standby...

  • U510 Boot Completely Messed Up

So my u510 was originally installed with Win8, and I wanted to dual boot Ubuntu alongside it, so I shrinked the existing windows volumes slightly in order to make room for the new partition, but in the process of installing I may have royally screwed myself over somehow.
When I boot up the laptop, the Lenovo logo appears for a short while (can't go into BIOS/BootMenu anymore), then the screen just has a blinking "_" at the top left corner and is unresponsive to any sort of input.
In hindsight, I probably should have done this while I wasn't half asleep, as now I don't remember what exactly I was doing anymore. Any idea what I can do to fix this? I'm pretty sure a majority of my data is there, I've just completely messed up one or some of the partitions, as my windows partition was working fine until i restarted and started getting these errors.

    Hindsight2020,
    Welcome to Lenovo Forums !
Thank you for taking the time to post your inquiry. I see that you have tried to have a dual boot on your Lenovo IdeaPad U510 running on windows 8.0.
I do have a question like how do you access the BIOS on the computer? Like what keys do you press?
Solution : If you have important files or data on your computer the only way that we can back it up is for you to get in touch with Lenovo Services Premium Support.
    * you need to order the set of recovery media with data backup
Direct Line would be 1-855-271-3878 option 2
I hope that this can help you get to your end goal

  • View of my device is completely messed up

Ever since I upgraded to iTunes 10, the screen under "devices" that shows what's on my iPhone is completely messed up. The main screen shows headings for "iPhone," "Version" and "Options," but each of those sections is blank. Also, there are no tabs for music, movies, apps, etc. It's all gone. Any suggestions on how to get it back?

That's usually a problem with the Segoe UI fonts on your system. On a Vista system, Vortical's suggestion from the following post is worth trying:

  • Using DNG SDK for 10bit DNG files

Is there any simple way one can use DNG SDK to write 10bit DNG files?
From what I have seen, DNG SDK can only validate/read/write 8 or 16bit files. I have quite a lot of 10bit raw data to be saved and performing a 16 bit conversion would be both time and space consuming.
If there is no simple workaround to achieve this, is there any chance for future SDK versions to support nonpower of 2 pixel bit depth?
    Thank you for your time.

    > See these specifications for more information on TIFF and TIFF-EP
I do know that specification. However, DNG deviates from the normal TIFF in enough points to warrant explicite specifications, particularly because several cameras' raw data is compressed in like but not identical ways.
    > I'm curious if CR will open 10bit DNG....
The Pentax K10D creates 12bit, uncompressed DNG in this packed format and that will be processed by ACR correctly, so I guess you won't have any problem.
On the other hand, it is interesting, that the DNG converter stores 12 and 14bit data in 16bit form, thereby avoiding the issue; a huge waste of space.

  • Get DNG Date Created from dng sdk

I have successfully compiled the dng sdk and the validate app and I wondered what is a simple way to just get the date created out?

Maybe your scanner software is doing something strange saving as a DNG that ACR does not like?  Try scanning as a TIF and open in ACR if that works for you.
Scanning large format negatives as a 16 bit RGB tiff is and then opening in Camera RAW is my preferred workflow and I get to use all of the ACR tools and adjustments, much easier to do some of these than in Photoshop.
Maybe the TIFF route might work for you - and once in ACR you can always save the output as DNG
    Mike

  • Compile DNG-SDK with VC6

    Hi all,
I downloaded the DNG-SDK, and now am trying to compile it with VC6.
    There are two main problems:
    1) The data type 'unsigned long long' doesnt exist. What could I use instead?
    2) Is '__int64' ok to use instad of 'signed long long'?
    3) The constructor of class range_tag_set in Dng_Image_Writer.cpp does not compile. Does someone know the problem? What should I change?

Please define either qMacOS or qWinOS (i.e., in your list of preprocessor defines). As you can see in line 32 of dng_flags.h this is required.

  • DNG SDK not working on Mac (Leopard)

Hi, I am writing a program to create dng files via the latest adobe dng sdk. I follow the same basic recipe as outlined in the example dng_validate code. On a Windows PC, the created thumbnails and previews appear just fine. However, the same code on the Mac creates dng files that do not show the thumbnails or the previews. In addition, apple programs like Aperture do not recognize these dng files either, even though they validate correctly by the provided dng_validate program on the Mac. Is this a bug in the Mac version of the SDK? OR, are there additional steps that are needed for these dng files to work???

    Hi Eric,
An example image is given below. The first one (test.dng) is the image we created with the Adobe DNG SDK on a Mac. The second image (test_dngv.dng) is the result of running it through the dng_validate program (which uses a compressed image by default with the -dng option), and therefore much smaller in size.
Neither of these images produce visible thumbs or previews on the Mac (not in any of the Apple programs such as Finder, Preview, Aperture, iPhoto etc.). However, when placed onto a Windows machine, they appear just fine everywhere.
As the previous poster has indicated, this may not be the fault of the Adobe DNG SDK, but for all practical purposes it is a hindrance to us. Whoever is at fault, the bottom line is that the DNG format is proving to be less portable than other image formats such as TIFF or JPG. We have no problem moving these other formats from any computer to any other computer, whether it be Mac or Windows. We are trying to support Adobe and its efforts with new standards, but this is costing us valuable engineering time in dealing with these matters, that just do not exist with other formats.
And, I apologize if this is presented in the wrong forum. However, we would appreciate if you can help us in this matter. Obviously, it can be done, since the Adobe DNG Converter program is capable of generating dng files with proper thumbs and previews on a Mac. It is just not documented anywhere for developers trying to work with the DNG SDK.

  • DNG SDK thinks 0xFFFFFFFF is invalid white level for 32 bit integers

As discussed in another message the DNG SDK does not seem to be able to write floating point DNGs. Since I need higher dynamic range than a 16 bit sample I instead went for 32 bit integers.
This works, and I manage to create a file but when I run dng_validate on it it says the white level is invalid. The white level I have of course set to 0xFFFFFFFF to make use of the full 32 bit range. Looking into the code in dng_ifd.cpp where this test is made it seems like the default max white level is set to 65535.0 and the file's white level is compared against that, regardless if the sample type is 16 or 32 bit. This means that I can only make use of 16 bits of the 32 bit integer which seems kind of strange. Looking into the DNG spec I don't see anything there that forbids using the full 32 bit range of 32 bit samples. So this looks like a bug to me.
    This is with version 1.4
the created file can be opened in Lightroom 4, so the only problem seems to be that dng_validate does not think its valid.

    Hello Charles,
I would be concerned too if my MacBook Prowas running slowly.  I found a couple of articles I recommend to help isolate and troubleshoot this issue.
I recommend reviewing this article first for possible causes of the slowness:
OS X Mavericks: If your Mac runs slowly

You can further isolate the issue by determining if it is only happening in your user account or if it is happening system-wide:
