Do I need a Applet Plugin to show my applets??

I wrote this simple beginners applet that I got from an online tutorial, but I cannot get the applet to show in my web page that I created for the applet....it just shows a gray box.

Yours was showing in the browser, it just wasn't showing anything useful.
System.out goes to the console (which is fine if you started an application from the console, or have a console app, or I think, if you used appletviewer from the console), but from a web browser, there is no console to print to. So Java has this Java Console, which starts up when applets try to print to a console (takes a while too).
If you are using Internet Explorer, try going Tools, Internet Options, Advanced, scroll down to Microsoft VM, and see if the Java Console is enabled. If so, when this console starts, a Java coffee cup will appear in your system tray (may already be there, or you may get more than one). Double clicking on it will bring up the Java Console, which shows what an applet has being trying to print to System.out.
On the contrary, my applet, instead of printing to system.out, painted a string onto the applet which was being displayed in the browser, it's just that without any painting, all you get is a gray (by default, this can be changed) box with nothing distinguishable about it.
So both our applets worked, it's just mine painted something onto the applet, yours printed something elsewhere, where you couldn't see the effect.
Hope this explains it a bit. (this is my understanding anyway, an expert might come along with a "not quite...", but it's pretty close)
