Do I Need Contribute

I have been maintaining an organization's website - free. I
was using FrontPage, but it - of course - is being phased out and
replaced by SharePoint. I have used the trial on this, but was not
overly impressed. Would Contribute be a better choice to continue
managing this site without knowing HTML and all of that. I learned
FrontPage (and SharePoint) by using them on the run...I do not need
anything too fancy, although i would like to start doing sites for
some small and homebased businesses that can't afford the usual
fees from website developers...
What do you think.

I would not recommend Contribute as the primary tool for
building and maintaining web sites. Of Adobe products, I would
certainly recommend Dreamweaver for that. Contribute is useful to
give to content managers controlled access to existing web pages
within their content areas.

  • I have DWCS4 - do I also need Contribute or does only the editor?

Hi - I have a site built in DWCS4 and the site owner wants to edit the pages remotely so best option is for him to use Contribute CS4.  Do I also need to buy Contribute CS4 in order to send him the 'key' and manage the templates, etc., or do I only need my DW and he only needs Contribute?  I have seen in Dreamweaver an option to "enable Contribute" but apart from that and seeing the videos of what Contribute can do, I don't know how to 'share' the site with the owner.  The site is built with template so would ideally like them only to be able to edit the editable regions and upload images, then I'm assuming I can "put" the modified files back on my system so we're in synch.  Any advice on all of the above would be great, if not just the main answer to the first question - do I need Contribute as well as DWCS4?
    many thanks all.

I don't think Contribute will address all of your needs.
Frontpage has much proprietary code that Contribute won't
recognize, and Contribute is only a mediocre web design tool. In
Adobe products, Dreamweaver would be the better choice. It can do a
wide spectrum of web design and development. It can also "convert"
Frontpage code to standard HTML. Contribute's strength is content
management, when you have multiple users adding content to a
    site.

  • Need Contribute 3.1 process when connecting

    Hi guys,
Does anyone know the exact process Contribute 3.1 goes through when connecting?  After getting through the FTP login phase, does it first check the _mm/cd3beta/messaging/users folder?  I have no idea why it would be named beta, as no beta version was ever used.
Or if you know of where this is detailed and can point me in the right direction, I would be most grateful!  ;-)
I have a client who is suddenly having a permission's issue.  Our staff who handles the servers says that they do have permission, and I must admit I can log on using their id to FTP with no problems, as well as go to all directories.
Of course, the staff wants to blame Contribute, which has worked seamlessly for this customer for over 5 years.  We have recently put up a new website for them.  First, they could connect, but could not write changes.  There was a permission problem and the server staff fixed that.  That is when the connection problem began to occur.
So, I am gathering information to help them see this has to be something on their end.
Thanks in advance for any help you can send me, especially those Adobe Contribute experts!  ;-)

Hi everyone, especially to anyone else with this issue currently or in the future.  I was surprised that I got no comments from anyone, having originally posted in the General side - no response there either.  Very surprising.
The initial problem I found, was that the directory had not been set up for a group I was told, so I continued to have write access, etc.  During their attempt to correct this, a mistake was made and the folder permissions were hosed up for both myself and the user.
When a user attempts to connect to a server, and the permission has changed, Contribute apparently disables that site's connection within Contribute.  I have never had this happen on my end, but it created a login issue for the user.  I have often come in to see disable connections, but if all is well, I have been able to connect.  Even after the permission issue was solved, the user still could not login.
In my continued search for a solution, something made me think about this, and when I had the user check, the connection had been disabled.  When the connection was enabled, the user was then able to login, make changes, and publish those changes normally.
I would gather from this, that Contribute does indeed check the users folder or some folder upon each login.
    Hope this helps.

  • Contribute - what do I need to buy?

I run Dreamweaver MX and have built a website for a client.
She is going to buy Contribute CS3 so she can edit the site and I
believe I also need Contribute CS3 to set it up and give her a
'key'. My question is: is it the exact same product we are both
buying (ie. we can download the CS3 trial from this site and then
buy) or is there a 'developer' extension or something else that
differentiates the designer from the editor? So who needs to buy
what and at what price? many thanks

    Hi,
For contribute there is no 'developer' extension or something
else that differentiates the designer from the editor..
You can chose to try it out before buying.
    Thanks,
    Manoj

  • SharePoint 2013 workflows requires site level contribute access or higher

I have a SP 2013 workflow on a list that resides on the root of the site collection.  All users have
contribute rights to this list, to the
Workflow Tasks list, and to the Tasks list.  But all general users have only READ level access to the site.
If users go to the list, click on any item and either try to initiate a workflow or check status of a workflow (by clicking "..." and choose workflows or check item checkbox and choose workflows from ribbon), they get an error of "This site
has not been shared with you" as it tried to bring the user to http://<root site collection>/_layouts/15/workflow.aspx
I have tried this with a custom workflow, an out of the box workflow and the result is the same every time.  However by granting any user CONTRIBUTE level access to the site resolves the issue immediately.  I have also gone back and tried this
on a SP 2010 VM and this was not an issue then.  You could do the same thing in 2010 with only read level access to the site.
So is this a limitation now with 2013 or a bug???  Surely, the system can't expect that a user needs contribute level access to the entire site just to initiate a workflow of one list.
    Please advise.
*This READ level access is very important because the root site is extremely publishing heavy and needs to be controlled and maintained by only a select group of users - not everyone that needs access to the workflow.

I went into the masterpage gallery library and added the users to the read permission level.  They are still having the same issue.
    Thanks,
    Jesse

  • DW CC6, Contribute, & Coldfusion

I have a long time client who uses Contribute for the non-dynamic portions of a Coldfusion website. With Creative Cloud, Contribute is no longer available. However, I find it interesting that DW still offers "Contribute Compatibility" and "Manage site in Contribute" options (only to throw errors that Contribute is not available).
How am I to set up and manage new Contribute connections for this client when Contribute is not in CC? And I don't buy the "Contribute is being discontinued as a Adobe mistake" argument. Contribute 6.5 is in the works.
Since the site is a very large Coldfusion driving E-commerce site, it doesn't fit into a Business Catalyst profile of normal sites.
Am I stuck or could there possibly be plans on including Contribute in a Cloud subscription? Given the breadth of other products offered, I do not see how including it would be of severe detriment to the company. If it will NOT be offered in the cloud, What is a developer to do in this type of situation?
Thanks for any input, advice, or suggestions!

I don't need contribute per se. But as a developer, the ability to Manage the contribute setup (set / create accounts, roles, send keys, set  rollbacks, compatibility, etc) is vital to being able to creating a Contribute compatible site for end users.
To not provide that functionality to developers means that the "simple" end user, the very non-tech people the software was designed to help are now the ones who have to set up the Contribute functionality. Seems a little counterintuitive.
Plus, by not providing a means for developers to set up and manage a Contribute compatible site, isn't Adobe missing out on opportunities for people who use ther high end tools (developers) to win over and generate revenue by recommending Adobe products to people who do not use their tools (end users)? Just a thought.
I never use the full Contribute product, so don't really care if it is in the cloud, but I believe the ability to set up and manage a contribute compatible site is a development role. An extension or management tool within DW would be a perfect mix for both the developer and facilitate sales opportunities to end-users.

  • Outlook 2003 crashes after installing Contribute 4

Has anyone experienced problems with microsoft outook 2003
after installing contribute 4? I installed contribute 4 on 6 xp
machines running office 03 and have received reports of microsoft
outlook 2003 randomly crashing. This does not occur with contribute
3 (at least it has not been reported). I uninstall contribute 4 and
the problem goes away. Any feedback would be much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

Contribute 4 uses tool bars that hook into MS office, you can
run the repair to the installer from Add/Remove Programs to remove
the toolbars if you need Contribute. Here's an earlier post you can

  • Remote editing via Contribute

I have Dreamweaver 5.5 but not Contribute. My client has Contribute but not Dreamweaver. He wants to be able to edit text on his website, which I maintain. We are in different offices.
Do I need Contribute as well as him to make this work?

No required. Share the connection details with him. He can connect to the same site and edit the content.

  • Connection via Contribute faulty?

    Hi,
Have just been trawling the 'net, looking for answers to this question: "http://forums.adobe.com/message/251294#251294" because I'm having the same prob just now, but with the CS5 Suite.
So, I have the correct connection details and auth (even contacted my Host wrt this problem), but Dreamweaver, and 3 other Dav Clients can connect and communicate seamlessly.
What's the deal with Contribute? Do I need Contribute-like files to sit on my Dav directory, waiting to be talked to? Or something else? Does the functionality work?
    -d

Well, it may or may not be a permissions issue - but perhaps it may have been at one time and then changed.
At the time of this original post I had not created a site in Dreamweaver.
After failing to connect Contribute to my webdav server, which did have the right permissions, I decided to try connecting to my web server via webdav - in Dreamweaver CS5. I successfully connected via Dreamweaver, which surprised me after my failure via Contribute.
I then decided to re-check Contribute, as everything was still open, and bingo - connected. I'm now successfully writing, reading and versioning will be hooked up soon. Dreamweaver already checking in/out nicely.
I've not tried opening a new connection in Contribute, which points to a different webdav directory, to see if I still have those initial connectivity issues. Let me know if you want me to give it a bash for curiosity's sake.

I have been using Macromedia Contribute 3 to maintain my website so my needs are pretty simple. But I would like to upgrade but don't know what to download. I want the new software to handle my existing website without a lot of challenges. What do you recommend?

    Hello,
There is no upgrade path available from Macromedia Contribute 3 to Adobe Contribute 6.5. However you can buy the latest version of Contribute which is 6.5 from the link mentioned below.

  • Which download do i need to buy: contribute 6.5 or contribute 6.5 User

i need to upgrade from Contribute 3.  i need to update my website - the content and the "border" - the template that shows my name, email address, etc.  But how do i know which to purchase from Adobe?  The "Contribute 6.5" or the "Contribute 6.5 User"  ???   Very disappointed that Adobe doesn't seem to have a purchasing department help 'line.'   Can anyone advise the difference?  Thank you!

Yes. Lion requires that you have v10.6.8 installed before you can upgrade to Lion. Reason being is you need to have access to the Mac App Store in order to download Lion.
Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM
Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store
