Do I need to buy a new external HDD for my Air?

I currently have a 2T External HDD that I have been using with my Windows computer. However, I am having problems using it with my MacBook Air - for example, I can't create new folders on the external HDD when using the Air. I read somewhere that "Mac OSX does not write to NTFS disks" (whatever that means) and that I'll need to "reformat the drive to either Fat32 or HFS" (again, I don't know what this means). I don't want to reformat the drive if that will cause me to lose the files that I already have on my external HDD. So, do I need to buy a new external HDD to use with my MacBook Air?

You CAN with the program PARAGON, however its a bit too much effort, .....external HD are cheap as dirt.
A nice 2TB  2.5" external is $117
I read somewhere that "Mac OSX does not write to NTFS disks"
It CAN, but with another APP as mentioned PARAGON
You dont have to reformat anything,.....options are PARAGON, or another HD (the easy way).
You dont have to buy another HD, however having 2 archives of your vital data you dont dare lose is important.

FORMAT TYPES
FAT32 (File Allocation Table)
Read/Write FAT32 from both native Windows and native Mac OS X.
Maximum file size: 4GB.
Maximum volume size: 2TB
You can use this format if you share the drive between Mac OS X and Windows computers and have no files larger than 4GB.
NTFS (Windows NT File System)
Read/Write NTFS from native Windows.
Read only NTFS from native Mac OS X
To Read/Write/Format NTFS from Mac OS X, here are some alternatives:
For Mac OS X 10.4 or later (32 or 64-bit), install Paragon (approx $20) (Best Choice for Lion)
Native NTFS support can be enabled in Snow Leopard and Lion, but is not advisable, due to instability.
AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Time Capsule do not support NTFS
Maximum file size: 16 TB
Maximum volume size: 256TB
You can use this format if you routinely share a drive with multiple Windows systems.
HFS+ ((((MAC FORMAT)))) (Hierarchical File System, a.k.a. Mac OS Extended (Journaled) Don't use case-sensitive)
Read/Write HFS+ from native Mac OS X
Required for Time Machine or Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! backups of Mac internal hard drive.
To Read HFS+ (but not Write) from Windows, Install HFSExplorer
Maximum file size: 8EiB
Maximum volume size: 8EiB
You can use this format if you only use the drive with Mac OS X, or use it for backups of your Mac OS X internal drive, or if you only share it with one Windows PC (with MacDrive installed on the PC)
EXFAT (FAT64)
Supported in Mac OS X only in 10.6.5 or later.
Not all Windows versions support exFAT.
exFAT (Extended File Allocation Table)
AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Time Capsule do not support exFAT
Maximum file size: 16 EiB
Maximum volume size: 64 ZiB
You can use this format if it is supported by all computers with which you intend to share the drive.  See "disadvantages" for details.

You should be able to find a Mac OSX driver for that printer. Did you check with the manufacturer/'s website?

  • I don't understandwhy i need to buy a new charger cable for my iphone 5 every week. why can't you make a normal cable, that doesn't stop working? i csn't spend so much money on buying new cablesall the time.

these cable are so delicate that after one week of use they break down. i can't spend all my money on buying them. moreover, last week it broke down on saturday eve so i was stuck untill tuseday without a phone.
i have to say that this compan is so rude, and it took me like an hour to sign in and write this complain, and i'm not even sure if it's the right place to wright this sort of things.
apple's customer service is the wort customer service in the world.

I don't understand why you need to buy a new one every week. I've had my iPhnoe 5 for almost a year, never had a problem with the cable. In addition, your phone is can't be more than a year old. Therefore, unless you're damaging them, your cable is under warranty and Apple will replace it. Perhaps you should have tried actually availing yourself of Apple's customer service before complaining about it.
    Best of luck.

  • I need to buy some new hard drives for my Mac Pro

I had an extra internal hard drive in my Mac Pro, a Seagate one, that suddenly stopped working and I needed to send it to a data recovery company, so...
    Now I'd like to
    - Install a new internal HD
    - Install a NAS with two/three disks. (Hitachi if possible, as I have read are the ones that last longer, more reliable than WD and by far more than Seagate).
But to do that I'd like to know how to find out the right type of disks for my computer.
I'd be very gratefull if anyone would tell me where to look it up.
    Thank you in advance
In case any of you can help with this, these are the details of my Mac Pro
    thanks again

NAS is of course external and depends on how you access it. And then t he ideal for RAID5 for instance woudl be WD RED series, but those do not work inside Mac tower.
Look up "TLER"  regarding WD drives and RAID.
Apple does not endorse or anything, not in decades and when there were problems - G5 and early adoption of SATA and changing standards and features, it was users that did the troubleshooting.
So unles you are using Apple's PRO RAID card, which I don't think anyone would or should and which is limited to 2TB drives and only instance of a ceiling on supported drives (it is req'd for SAS though), use your own research.

  • I need to buy a new hard drive for my MacBook Pro. What should I buy?

Should I buy a 2TB SATA Hard Disk Drive Kit for Mac Pro? Or is this just a kit and not the drive?

Or is this just a kit and not the drive?
I'm not sure what you mean by that, but the nature of your question implies that you should shop for one from a company well known to support Macs, can help you decide what you need, how to install it, and provide free technical support should you require it. OWC / MacSales can do all that and their prices are as good as any you are likely to find from anyone else.

I am thinking of changing from a PC to a Mac.  Will I need to buy a new, Apple compatible, version of Lightroom, or can I upgrade to it, or can I get it free as I've paid for the PC version?

Your licence is not platform specific, so Lightroom can be used on any two machines (Mac and/or WIndows), with one actually being used at any given time.
    So no, you're money's safe!

Make SURE you format the drive as Mac OS Extended, journalling optional but recommended.

  • Do I need to buy a new optical drive?

    Wouah, really strange things happening.
A couple of weeks ago, I had to burn something like a hundred DVDs, but couldn't complete coz my drive (a Pionneer 111D) was refusing to burn 2 in every four DVD. Thought the problem was from the media itself. Left it there...
Then came Snow Leopard, installed it, all went fine, exept my drive is not detecting some DVD that I know are good, it tells me the media is blank, though it's not.
Thought it may be because of the new system, so I did a firmware update, now my drive is a pionneer 111L, but it still doesn't detect those DVD; so i thought, if it's a problem with the system, i am going to install Leopard, but the drive didn't even recognize the install DVD, so I had to install Tiger, which I did, and guess what the drive doesn't recognize those medias.
So my question, to be short, do I need to buy a new drive, and if yes what the best option. I have a MAC PRO early 2006 first gen.
Thanks for any kind of advice, maybe if I can get it back to normal.

Your MacPro should have two optical drive bays in it---Drives are cheap (mine £25)--Installation simple. I say buy a second, my second was as below. If your OEM works, or you buy two new drives, it makes copying disks easy. There are some instruction on OD insertion on the net but just look at your Mac Pro manual re the drive bays. You stick the second drive onto the little branch of the ribbon cable.
Search in this forum for (say) 'second optical drive MacPro' but someone will likely remember the installation help page for you. My second drive:-

Due to the kind of plug used the US power cord is rated at the 125v value.. and legally we cannot advise you to use on higher voltages.. although I have never had issues in Australia.. 240v.
But adapters from your Euro power plug to US are generally ugly .. unsightly things.. and often sit high above the socket and are none too stable.. I agree with Bob.. just go out and buy a standard figure 8 power cord.. check with Apple in Italy for a white one.. if you are going to have it on show.. black are far more common. Or even check ebay for a standard power Apple power cord as a number of items they sell use the figure8 socket.

System Version:          Mac OS X 10.6.8 (10K549). can I take out the wifi card from that mack and use that one for my mac air?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Consider yourself lucky that your MacBook is still working. Now, turn it off. Wine may have damaged other parts of your computer.
Then, take the MacBook to an Apple Store or reseller. It will be a very expensive repair, as it's not covered by warranty and the logic board has to be replaced. In some cases, it may be better to get a new MacBook.
If you can't take it to an Apple Store, contact with Apple > http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57

When I try to install ios lion the installer says my hard drive has SMART errors and that I need to buy a new Hard Drive, but my computer witch has snowleprd and runs just fine.

SMART is a technology that monitors the drive for signs of impending failure. You can verify that SMART is indicating a problem in Disk Utility. Select the hard drive and look at the bottom of the window. It should look like this:
If the SMART status is not "Verified" then you should back up your drive and start shopping for a new one.

  • Switching from Mac to Windows. Do I need to buy a new Ps?

    Hello there,
Since I'm planning on buying the Wacom Companion for being able to work on-the-go, I was wondering if I also needed to buy a new version of Photoshop.
I bought Photoshop CS 5 for Mac a few years back and don't really need a newer version. But at my Downloads page I can only find the option to download Photoshop for Mac and not Windows. Shouldn't I be able to download a Windows version as well or do I really have to spend another couple of hundred bucks on a new CS 6? That would blow immensely.
    Kind regards,
    Hans

$200 to upgrade and costs nothing to change to a Mac license.

I think Mylenium said that you can install and use the Mac version for 30 day trial while waiting for the swap to go through.

  • Do i need to buy a new soundcard(Creative Inspsire T7900???

i bought the Creative inspire t7900 and try to connect to my pc(integrated soundmax digital audio - three outputs-pink,green,blue.), but in all of ways i i've tried to connect it only front speakers(or only side s.,rear s.-depending on way of connection) and subwoofer worked. So do i need to buy a new soundcard(what kind of cards is going well with this sound system)?.............looking for a solution ..thanx

With those speakers it is recommended to use one of the great Sound Blaster 7.1 cards (Audigy 2 ZS, Audigy 2 NX or Audigy 4 Pro). You will have the best features like: hardware Dolby Digital EX and DTS-ES decoding, superior 24-bit Advanced HD quality audio, CMSS 3D audio technology, ASIO 2.0 support, DVD-Audio, and many more.
Wether you will use it for movies, games or music, it covers all the areas, so you won't have problems in any application.
    Good luck.
