Do I need to use open directory on Yosemite Server, I'm only looking to use file sharing and VPN

I'm setting up a new mac mini server with Yosemite and I was wondering if there are any advantages or disadvantages to not using the open directory service? The only services I'm planning on using are File Sharing and VPN.

You don't need Open Directory unless you want to manage user accounts centrally on the server.

  • Reconfigure Open Directory in Yosemite Server

Is it possible to delete and reconfigure Open Directory in Yosemite server?
The host name and configuration were modified after Open Directory was activated and I get the message "Unable to load replica list" in the Settings Tab of Open Directory on the Server App (Server 4.0.3 (Build 14S350)). I think the best way would be to start over the automatic configuration.

Many Open Directory problems can be resolved by taking the following steps. Test after each one, and back up all data before making any changes.
    1. The OD master must have a static IP address on the local network, not a dynamic address. It must not be connected to the same network with more than one interface; e.g., Ethernet and Wi-Fi.
    2. You must have a working DNS service, and the server's hostname must match its fully-qualified domain name. To confirm, select the server by name in the sidebar of the Server application window, then select the Overview tab. Click the Edit button on the Host Name line. On the Accessing your Server sheet, Domain Name should be selected. Change the Host Name, if necessary. The server must have at least a three-level name (e.g. "server.yourdomain.com"), and the name must not be in the ".local" top-level domain, which is reserved for Bonjour.
    3. The primary DNS server used by the server must be itself, unless you're using another server for internal DNS. The only DNS server set on the clients should be the internal one, which they should get from DHCP if applicable.
    4. Only if you're still running Mavericks server, follow these instructions to rebuild the Kerberos configuration on the server.
    5. If you use authenticated binding, check the validity of the master's certificate. The common name must match the hostname and domain name. Deselecting and then reselecting the certificate in Server.app has been reported to have an effect in some cases. Otherwise delete all certificates and create new ones.
    6. Unbind and then rebind the clients in the Users & Groups preference pane. Use the fully-qualified domain name of the master.
    7. Reboot the master and the clients.
    8. Don't log in to the server with a network user's account.
    9. Disable any internal firewalls in use, including third-party "security" software.
    10. If you've created any replica servers, delete them.
    11. If OD has only recently stopped working when it was working before, you may be able to restore it from the automatic backup in /var/db/backups, or from a Time Machine snapshot of that backup.
    12. As a last resort, export all OD users. In the Open Directory pane of Server, delete the OD server. Then recreate it and import the users. Ensure that the UID's are in the 1001+ range.
If you get this far without solving the problem, then you'll need to examine the logs in the Open Directory section of the log list in the Server app, and also the system log on the clients.

  • Problem using file sharing and screen sharing in Leopard

I have Mac OS 10.5 Leopard installed on 4 computers in a Home Network and have a problem with sharing files and using screen sharing. Here is my setup.
MacBook Pro with my logon ID
MacBook Pro with my fiancee's logon ID
Mac Mini with both of our logon ID's
Mac Pro with both of our logon ID's
The problem I have is I am able to access the Mac Mini computer where we have an external Hard Drive connected for data. She is also able to access it. The only problem is we have it set up to only share this external USB drive. Yet for both of us it shares the external drive along with the internal Macintosh HD. Fortunately this is not a very big deal but since I'm not sharing all those drives why is it doing this?
Also, I am able to connect from the Mac Mini for example to my MBP and vice versa for screen sharing along with file sharing. Yet if she tries to connect to the Mac Pro from her MBP and vice versa it won't. It simply times out and will never connect for screen sharing or file sharing but yet the Finder shows the Mac Pro. We have a 2nd hard drive in the Mac Pro which is the one set up for file sharing. I am also unable to connect to the Mac Pro's HD. Everything appears to be set up correctly. For my MBP on the Finder it shows the Mac Pro but once again I am unable to connect to it for screen sharing or file sharing.
Also, not sure if it's related but even for her MBP she is unable to connect to it from any other computer in our network although it's set up for file sharing and screen sharing so I'm not sure if it's related to her logon ID. Then again as mentioned above neither of us can connect to the Mac Pro.
I tried to make the above sound as simple as possible. I am relatively new to networking and of course Leopard but even on the Mac Pro all settings sound the same as on the Mac Mini where we can both connect to. The only big difference is on the Mini we are connect to a USB external drive, on the Mac Pro an internal drive. Is there something I could have overlooked or are there known issues with Leopard's sharing features?
We both have .mac but since we are using this on an internal network (some wi-fi, some wired, all through an Airport Base Station Extreme) I would think this has nothing to do with Back to my Mac.
I appreciate any help with the above.

  • Can't turn on open directory in the server app

hi, i can't turn on open directory in the server app, I am running the new version of Mavericks (10.9.2)
    please help me

If DNS services aren't properly configured and operating correctly, then various other parts of the OS X Server environment tends to be somewhere between flaky and unstable.
To verify DNS is working correctly, launch Terminal.app from Applications > Utilities and issue the following harmless diagnostic command:
    sudo changeip -checkhostname
You'll need to enter an administrative password for the sudo, might see a one-time message about the use of sudo, then see some configuration information, and then an indication that no changes are required, or that there are issues with the network or with local DNS services.  This tool will spot most local DNS and network errors, but will not spot an erronous configuration using the .local top-level domain; don't do that.
If you do not have another DNS server on your local network — the screen shot shows DNS isn't running locally, but it's possible there's another DNS server in use.  If you do not have a local DNS server (and you're on a NAT'd network) here's how to set up DNS on a NAT'd network — DNS is essential for proper operations of OS X Server, and on a private NAT'd network, that's only possible with your own DNS services.  You cannot successfully reference off-network DNS servers here (not the DNS servers at your ISP, nor at Google, and not via a low-end firewall that might have a DNS resolver, etc), as these off-NAT'd network DNS servers do not return the necessary IP-address-to-domain-name translations necessary for your hosts.    These name-to-address and address-to-name DNS translations are part of distributed authentication and network encryption.

  • Server 4: open directory entry for server reports wrong IP address

    I'm running Server 4 on a Mac Mini (late 2012) running OS X 10.10.
The server is configured as a stand-alone machine providing services to users connecting over its fixed IP public address.  The server uses Open Directory to keep record of authorised users of the services provided (mail, calendar, wiki, contacts, some file sharing), and the machine is configured as an OD master.
I've noticed that the entry relating to the server on the Server 4 panel for Open Directory (the only entry showing by the way) lists three IP addresses below the name of the machine.  My concern is that these IP addresses are not related to the IP address being used by the machine, and there does not appear to be any simple way to change them.  The IPs reported are 10.37.129.2, 10.0.1.2, 10.211.55.2.  The server's fixed IP is in the range 45.146.x.x and the local network running below our router that the server connects to has IPs in the range 192.168.1.x.  So It is not clear where these IPs might be coming from.
What do these numbers relate to?  If they are important, should they point to the IP address occupied by the server?  If so, how do I make this change in settings?
Thanks a lot in advance for any help that you can provide.

  • Open directory in mavericks server.

Setting up mavericks server - open directory displays error " server was successfully configured as a directory server but an error occurred" I have tried everything. Can anyone help ?

Does the server show up in the Server list as (Master)?  If so, delete it, make absolutely sure your DNS set up and try again.
Even though I hsve a fully qualified Domain name, SERVER.DOMAIN.COM and my reverse lookup set weith my ISP. if I do a lookup for the IP of my server it returns server.domain.com, found Open Directory was much happier if  I used the DNS server on the Server Itselfl
In Server DNS created a Primary Zone for my doman, domain.com. Then a Machine A Record for server,domain.com. It automatically made a nameserer record of server.domain.com and the Reverse Zone and server mapping for reverse lookup. Then set it to perform lookups for this server only. Then set 127.0.0.1 as the First DNS server in System Network Settings before any ISP DNS Servers. Then for good measure also entered my ISPs DNS servers in as forwarding servers. Then setup Open Directory with the correct domain with no errors.

  • In order to use a US government web software, I need to use version 2, and not a current version. Is there anyway I can download an older version?

The US Food and Drug Administration uses an authoring browser-based system for creating SPL files called XForms. According to the FDA, the only version of Firefox which is compatible is version 2.0.0.13. The current version of Firefox 3 does not work with the plugin (Mozilla XForms 0.8.5 Add-on).

No need to use the unsupported and insecure Firefox 2, you can use XForms version 0.8.7 with Firefox 3.6, available from https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/mozilla-xforms/

Does any one know how to attach a document from your mail, while you are already in your e-mail, meaning not having to look for your file first and then open the e-mail.

    Luis
Good question - and one that a lot of (business) people would like solved!
Your question prompted me to do some research, and I found this workaround posted by Scott Grossberg:
His solution actually addresses a second problem too - how to attach a document when replying to an email message. In your case you may not need to consider the "reply" aspect - but if not right now, it'll come in useful someday!
I've pasted it verbatim - if it works for you (it does for me) then all credit goes to Scott for solving the problem. There's just one thing I'd add to his solution: you will probably want to rename the message, as by default Goodreader gives it the Subject line: Mail with GoodReader attachments.
    THE GOODREADER OPTION
    1.  CREATE the document you want to send.
    2.  SAVE it to GoodReader (this will require you to buy and install the app).
    3.  Go to your email and OPEN the email thread to which you want to Reply and attach your file.
    4.  COMPOSE your Reply.
    5.  DOUBLE TAP the message.
    6.  TAP SELECT ALL. This will copy the entire email thread.
    7.  OPEN GOODREADER on the iPad and go to the file you want to send as part of your Reply.
    8.  At the bottom of the GoodReader screen you will see an EXPORT icon (it looks like a rectangle with an arrow pointing to the right).
    9.  TAP the Export button.
    10.  TAP EMAIL FILE. Depending on your needs, tap either SEND FILE “AS IS” or “FLATTEN ANNOTATIONS.” This will open a compose message screen with the chosen document already attached.
    11.  TAP in the body of the email screen. TAP PASTE. This will place your composed Reply and the prior email thread into the message.
    12.  ENTER the Recipients’ names in the TO: field of your message.
    13.  SEND your email Reply.
The modified version (= when composing a new message rather than a reply):
1 Make sure that the doc you want to attach is saved in GoodReader
2 In the message you are composing, double tap, select all, and then copy.
3 Open GoodReader and select the file you want to attach
4 Select the export button at the bottom of screen
    5 Select e-mail file
6 Position cursor in body of the email message, tap and paste. You may want to delete the "sent from GoodReader" text that precedes the attachment.
7 Rename your message (as by default it will be Mail with GoodReader attachments)
8 Add the recipient's address in the To field.
Hope this helps! All thanks to Scott for this workaround.

  • Problem using File sharing  in a small office network

I have a problem using File sharing on an Imac and Macbook Pro.
My office has a small network running Windows Small office file server 2003. I have one Windows 2000 PC connected to it and 3 Macs, an 2.4 gHz Intel iMac running Leopard 10.5.6 , a MBP running the same and a Mac Mini running 10.5.
From the Finder Shared window of the Mac Mini, I can see all the computers on the network. It also used to be the case for the iMac, but the MBP could never see the Windows PC’s, not the server or the Win2000. This wasn’t a big problem as I was communicating between the Macs and using the shared printer on the iMac.
On Monday Jan 19 the iMac was suddenly unavailable to the other 2 Macs. It was working normally on the Friday. The iMac can access the Mac Mini and copy files to it. The Mac Mini can see the iMac but cannot access it. Even trying to connect as, ends in a failed connection. I have tried rebooting, turning File sharing off and then on again to no avail.
The iMac now also cannot see the Windows PC’s which it previously could.
To get files from the MBP for printing, I now copy it to the Mac Mini and acces the folder from the iMac, a very tedious procedure. I don’t know why this happened and am scared that the Mac Mini is going to do the same thing.
All three computers are also running VMware 2.0 with Windows XP pro, and from VMware the server is visible on all the computers.
Any help will be much appreciated, I live in a small town in South Africa and the local computer suppliers have no knowledge of the Macs.
I think that the problem with the iMac may have started after a software upgrade to 10.5.6 but I am not entirely sure.
    Thank you
    ajdk

Well, you're current method sounds pretty good. But if you want to user a file server, hey go ahead.
What you want to do when you centralize project files is to keep track of which one is the newest and becareful not to overwrite files with the same name. So you either have to set up individual spaces on the server (separate AFP/FTP folders maybe), or you'll need to run a file checkout service.
The individual space is cheaper, but it's not much of a difference from backing up to the network drive. Since you have Gigabit connections, you might even opt to save ALL the user files on the server instead of just the project files.
If you want to run a file checkout service, there's two approaches. You can run a service that can host any kind of file, or you can run a version control system for each kind of application (Photoshop, Word, etc.). Please notice, that as you read further and further along, the methods become more and more expensive and complicated. Once you get to this point, it will be necessary to purchase or build software in addition to the Mac OS X Server package.

  • Need help with File Sharing and iPHOTO Library sharing........

I recently upgraded my imac and my macbook pro to Mavericks.
    I have some problems now.
Previously using iPHOTO when running I was able to see the other computers iphoto library on the left side bar.  I was able then to access the other computers iphoto library.  This is no longer showing the other computers library from either computer.
When I try to access the other computers files using file sharing I get a message that permisions are missing.
It then asks if I want to fix permisions ,  I say yes....it will run for an hour and do nothing...I need to force quit.
I really dont want to use the cloud to do this sharing....why should I upload into the internet when I have the computers on same network.
Is there any place I can go to find how this is now done?  Before I didnt need to look up a thing....was just intuitive .  Now Im running into walls every way I try to share the iphoto libraries across computers.

The iPhoto sharing that was in the previous version doesn't seem to exist. There is now iCloud Photo Sharing.

I don't know about the file sharing issue.

  • The difference using file text and using database ...

    whatz 'p dude !!!
yo men i have a little quest bout using file text and
    usig database .
    the quest is :
if u a programer tell me, if u use file text why u use that ?
whats the advantages using file text for saving record ?
and if u use database like jdbc, sql, orcle for making java
what the advantages using them ?
can u give me some hope plizzzz

if u a programer tell me, if u use file text
why u use that ?Text files are good for storing things like configuration data. For this, you are best served using java.util.Properties to store data in any easily accessible format. That's the problem with text files, you have to invent a format and a way to read/write that format every time you use a text file for a database. Sure you could use a standard format like CSV, but you run into big problems when your database exceeds several megabytes in size. Doing something a simple as reading a single field from a file usually involves reading the entire file. That can kill performance if you have to do it repeatedly and often.
and if u use database like jdbc, sql, orcle for
making java what the advantages using them ?Java was made with C, not with JDBC, SQL, or Oracle. SQL is a language for reading and writing data from a database. JDBC is a Java interface to interact with databases. And Oracle itself is a relational database.
The advantages of using a database are ease of use, performance, and reliability. All you need to know is JDBC and SQL to read/write data from a database (though SQL varies slightly with every different database). Databases use indexes to allow them to quickly find rows and fiels in a database without having to read the entire database. Most of them cache data in memory to speed things up too.
That's it. If you want to know more, search Google or buy a book or two :)
can u give me some hope plizzzzI'm hopeful you will realize that you make yourself look like an idiot typing like that.

  • Using file manager and phone browser without email...

I have nokia 6021, PC suite version 6.5.12 and windows xp home SP2 and I connect the phone to PC via bluetooth.
I just want to be able to view my phone "contacts" (just names and phone numbers) on my PC, edit my "contacts" on the PC and then load them back to the phone, but I do not want to synch with my email program because that is full of other contacts stuff that I do not want to clutter the phone memory with.
The bluetooth connection seems to work fine, but......
When I set up PC suite it wanted me to synch with an email program, but I just by-passed that. However, I cannot see my contacts files on the PC using file manager and phone browser. Is the only way to do this to actually synch with another email program that I use purely for the phone contacts?

    ok guys, problem solved.
I just do a firmware update on my phone, though the firmware version was the same one, yet it's now able to back it up..
