Do Java interfaces have automatic reference counting?

I'm actually a Delphi developer trying to understand interfaces and I'm curious about the way Java implements them.
Here is a simple Delphi psuedo-code snippet:
var
// interface variable
Intf : IInterface;
// object reference variable
Car : TCar;
begin
// instantiate TCar
Car := TCar.Create;
// obtain IInterface interface for Car object
Intf := Car; // the reference count for Car is now 1
Intf :=Nil;
// After setting Intf to nil, the reference count is decreased to 0 and Car is automatically freed.
Car.Free; // EXCEPTION! Car was automatically freed because the only interface reference had a reference count of 0
What would happen in Java with the above code?
Does Java automatically reference count all objects with interfaces?
I know Java reference counts all objects in general so they are automatically destroyed, but I'm trying to understand the difference in interface implementation.
Thanks for any help!

Thanks for the replies!
Sorry about my confusion with Java...
Does Java support interfaces? If so, can't you have a interface reference variable like I have in my Delphi code?
Also, if Java does support interfaces, do they have any other purposes aside from creating a list of functions/methods that can be used as a contract to interact with an object?
Interfaces seem really useful since you can have an IDriveable interface (for example), and any unrelated classes can implement it... (eg. TBoat class, TCar class, etc) even if the classes do not have a common ancestor class.
However, in Delphi interfaces also automatically reference count so once you create an interface reference you have to be very careful so the interface doesn't automatically free the object it is pointing to...

  • String reference count

    Hi,
    is copy a string to another string a real copy or is it just an increment of the reference count to it. For example if used like this:
    private void foo()
         String data = getFooData();
         lastData = data;
         if (someThingTodo) {
              // do something
              lastData = null;
    }If it is a question of reference count, then this code only increment, and eventually decrement it, right ?

    Assigning to a reference type--String, Object, List, MyClas, etc.--never copies the object. It always just causes the reference on the left side to point at the same object that the reference on the right side points to.
    Java doesn't use reference counting for its memory management. But if your question about decrementing is in the vein, "Will the VM automatically detect when an object can no longer be reached and make its memory available for use by other objects?" then then answer is yes, that's taken care of for you.

  • NSNumber Reference Count Question

    I'm working my way through Stephen Kochan's Programming in Objective-C right now, and I've just finished Chapter 17 on memory management. The first exercise is to write a program to determine the effect on reference counts of adding and removing objects in a dictionary object. Anyway, I've got the following code:
    #import <Foundation/Foundation.h>
    int main (int argc, const char * argv[]) {
    NSAutoreleasePool * pool = [[NSAutoreleasePool alloc] init];
    NSNumber *num1, *num2, *num3;
    NSString *string1, *string2, *string3;
    NSMutableDictionary *dictionary = [NSMutableDictionary dictionaryWithCapacity: 3];
    num1 = [NSNumber numberWithInt: 1];
    num2 = [NSNumber numberWithInt: 2];
    num3 = [NSNumber numberWithInt: 3];
    string1 = [NSString stringWithString: @"first string"];
    string2 = [NSString stringWithString: @"second string"];
    string3 = [NSString stringWithString: @"third string"];
    printf("\n num1 retain count before dictionary: %x\n", [num1 retainCount]);
    printf("string1 retain count before dictionary: %x\n", [string1 retainCount]);
    printf(" num2 retain count before dictionary: %x\n", [num2 retainCount]);
    printf("string2 retain count before dictionary: %x\n", [string2 retainCount]);
    printf(" num3 retain count before dictionary: %x\n", [num3 retainCount]);
    printf("string3 retain count before dictionary: %x\n", [string3 retainCount]);
    [pool release];
    return 0;
    When I compile and run it, I get the following:
    num1 retain count before dictionary: 2
    string1 retain count before dictionary: 1
    num2 retain count before dictionary: 2
    string2 retain count before dictionary: 1
    num3 retain count before dictionary: 2
    string3 retain count before dictionary: 1
    Can anyone tell me why the NSNumber objects have a reference count of 2 after creation, while the strings only have a count of 1? I expected both types of objects to have a reference count of 1 after initialization.

    NSNumber itself retains them. Notice, if you set them all to the same value, they'll all just point to a single object.
    It's informative to check the addresses with something like:
    printf("%x\n%x\n%x\n, num1, num2, num3);

  • Increase Registry Reference Count with Labview Installer

    I am trying to create an installer that is using an ActiveX control.  There are instructions on what files need to be installed and registered (See attached pdf).  I think I have the files going to the proper destinations and the ones that require registration I have checked the register COM in the source file settings section.  However I am unsure about two items.
    1.  There is a file (IAT_YUV.ax that needs to be registered, how do I go about doing that?
    2. There is a statement in the instructions as follows:
    All files marked with *) must be registered using regsvr32.exe. It is very important to copy all files to the target computer, before registering these files. Most setup toolkits have an option to automate this task.
    For all files marked with **), you have increase their reference counts in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SharedDLLs. Most setup toolkits have options to perform this step automatically.
    I am not sure how to accomplish this in the Installer?

    Hi Terry,
    The answer to your question is quite involved. We have this knowledge base article that you can follow for registering (IAT_YUV.ax and similar files. You will write a LabVIEW executable that uses the System Exec VI to register the ActiveX dll. To include them in the installer, under the Installer Properties»Advanced..., select Run executable after installation and add the above executable. Therefore when the installer is finished your executable that registers the dll will automatically run. While this process is pretty involved that should be all you need to do.  Hope this helps!

    How can java programs execute automatically when it connects to network.What is "it"? That is, execute when what connects to the network?
    Your computer? If that's what you mean, this is not a Java question. It's an OS operational/administrative question. Executing any program, whether written in Java or not, based on some system event has to do with that system, not with the program. If it's possible to do this, you'd do it exactly the same way for a Java program as you would for any other program.
    Or is "it" the program itself? If this is what you mean, then it's a nonsensical question. For the program to connect to the network and detect that it has connected to the network, it must already be executing, so asking how to execute it at that point is meaningless.
    Finally, I'll point out that "connecting to the network" is a pretty meaningless phrase. Or rather, it has so many potentially valid meanings that it's impossible to know which one you're referring to when you use that phrase. And I'd be willing to bet you don't have a clear picture of that yourself.

  • Java Interface Question.

    There are classes in the Java SDK, such as the Interface:
    org.w3c.dom.Document
    that have factory methods in them that carry out actual operations.
    But how can this be possible, because when I program an interface:
    public interface test {
    public void setString(String s);
    It will only compile thus, with no implementation on the method signatures?
    How do Java interfaces with factory methods to this?
    org.w3c.dom.Node is another one. Where does the functionality/method implementation
    come from?

    public interface MyInterface {
         public void method1();
    class MyImplementation implements MyInterface {
         public void method1(){
    public class MyFactory {
         public static MyInterface createMyInterface(){

    public class Test{
               public static void main(String args[]){
                      MyInterface x=MyFactory.createMyInterface();
                      x..method1();
    }Now can you understand this? Assume all These classes are separate classes. This is not a problem with inner classes. Before make a reply, try to understand it or post a reply as saying it is not clear rather than posting this kind of post.

    From a performance point of view, are Java interfaces free?
    That is, if I have:

    interface Foo
    public void bar();
    class FooImpl implements Foo

    }And I call one or other of the Foos like
    Foo foo // A parameter, field or local variable.
    foo.bar();Does calling foo through an interface add any overhead that calling it direct in the first example not? As I understand it, all methods are 'virtual' in Java, so it should perform the same in either case.

  • Mediator To Spring Error-Could not convert from java interface to interface

    Hi,
    I have a requirement to using a Spring component and my composite application would be File Read -> Mediator -> Spring Component -> File Write.
    I have to read a file and using mediator map the same to the Spring input and write the Spring component output to a file.
    I have created a Java interface ( Package Name - transformtospring , Interface Name - TransformInterface) and also created a Java Class ( TransformImpl ) which implements the Interface in this package. Saved all these artifacts in SCA-INF/src folder of the application.

  • Replicating simple Java objects for automatic failover

    Is there a way to replicate a simple java object that is bound from JNDI
              across all servers so that if the primary server fails, it will
              automatically failover?
              We have a java client that uses JNDI to access EJBs on WLS5.1 SP8. In order
              to determine client information, the client currently binds a simple java
              class in the JNDI tree. The Entity and Session beans use the caller
              principal to locate the object in order to access client-information for
              such things as record locking, logging, etc..
              We have to move this architecture to a cluster environment and we are
              wondering how we can replicate this object across cluster servers so that
              failover is handled automatically, and that it is still accessible through
              JNDI.
              An RMI replicated stub is not enough, since it only works as long as the
              server hosting the RMI object is alive.
              I'd like to add that the object is created and bound at client start-up and
              destroyed at client exit.
              Thank you for any advice or information,
              Dania Kodeih.

    A: Replicating simple Java objects for automatic failover

    That's what I figured. I guess the only solution in this case is to persist
              the object during client sessions. I was hoping for something simpler, but I
              guess I'll have to create an Entity Bean and everything else that comes with
              it.
              Thanks,

  • Using reference counter with 6602 board

    I want to control a 6602 card in a Labview application so that I can count events in channels 1-6 depending on a reference counter in channel 0. I've set up channel 0 to count from a fixed value down to 0, and I am using hardware triggering to start all counters. Now I need something like a stop trigger to stop my event counters simultaneously when counter 0 reaches zero.
    I tried to use counter 0 output as a gate for the others, but without success. Unfortunately, the help files for the TIO counter VI's are pretty lousy (nudge, nudge), so I'd be grateful if someone could give me a hint how to solve this problem.
    Sebastian

    Hi Sebastian (whatthehellamithinking),
    Nice name I think your idea about using counter 0 output as the gate signal is the right idea. However, I would make sure to configure a couple things. The first thing I would do is configure counter 0 output for toggle mode. This means when the counter rolls beyond zero it will toggle it's output. I would alsoe configure the output to be configured as high-to-low logic. Then I would connect it to the gate of all the other counters (make sure to configure a gate on each counter). The gate should initially be high on each counter since the output of counter zero should be high. Then when it rolls or reaches terminal count it will toggle the output which will gate each of the other counters.
    Anyway, not sure i
    f you tried it that way but I think it shoud work. Hope that helps. Have a good day.

  • Java interface with xml communication

    Hello everybody,
    For a project i need to make a java interface with xml communication.
    For example ; from 1 laptop I press on a java button and then i need to get a text message on the other laptop.
    The java interface is already created now the xml code for communication.
    I hope someone can help me how to start with the xml code.
    Are there any templates that i can use?

    I need to use XML for this, cause it is in the
    assignment.As far as communication is concerned, it doesn't matter that you are sending XML. You can send any kind of data. So first find out how to send data, then send data which is XML.
    I only want to know if its possible to send data/text
    from 1 laptop (windowsxp prof) to the other laptop
    (also windows xp prof).Provided the other laptop is running a server that can receive that data.
    Maybe its easier if I send data to a specific IP
    address?Provided there is a server running at that IP address that can receive that data. You can use an IP address to connect to a server but that has nothing to do with sending the data.
    Its important that the communication between 2 system
    is in XML language.XML is not a programming language. XML is a format for storing data. You can certainly send XML-formatted data between two computers.
    So i hope u have a solution for my problem.The solution would be for you to learn how communication between two computers works in the real world. If you have an assignment that says you have to make communication work, surely there was something taught to you before about how to do it?

  • Any good article on Java Interface usage principle?

    Hi All
    I find Java interface is quite good concept, but some expert mentioned in some article, "Don't over use it".
    Just wonderring anyone can point me to some good article on the internet on In what kind sceniaro we need use Interface, in which case we'd better not use it.
    Thanks in advance.
    Steven

    Then how do you explain some gurus said" don't overuse interface"?I explain it thus:
    (a) it doesn't actually contradict what the article says
    (b) 'don't overuse interfaces' is a tautology: it doesn't actually say anything very useful.
    On the other hand there's no reason why "some gurus" can't disagree with Holub. I disagree myself to a large extent. You can define your entire API as interfaces, but then you're committed to all kinds of factory methods, and provision of secret implementation classes, etc. This can get pretty tedious pretty quickly. And, somewhere or other, you must have at least one actual class, so that you can have either a static method or a constructor, so you can get hold of your initial factory, or factory builder, or factory builder factory, or factory builder factory builder, or wherever it is that you want to start.
    I've used frameworks where there were four different implementation classes for the same interface. Never did find out why. Something wrong somewhere.
    When you can keep your base classes stable, I don't see a reason not to use them. 'Base class fragility' is all that Holub is really complaining about, and there are lots of solutions to that, such as 'don't' for a start. Java is chock full of stable base classes.

  • Audio capture filter reference count causing leak

    I have a purplexing problem.
    I have written my own audio and video capture filters and they work fine. I have tested with FMLE, graphedit and various other tools which i wrote myself. When i click "Stop" on the stream or close FMLE, the reference count on the audio capture filter is not release to 0, thus causing a memory leak. The leak is not a big problem, but my filters have to do some important processing in their destructors, which dont get called because its not being released.
    To purplex the problem further, my video capture filter is not having this problem, only my audio.
    I have written several more capture filters that literally do nothing other than register themselves to explore this problem and only the audio filters seem to be leaking. Anyone else seen such a bizare problem ?
    I am using FMLE 3.1.0.8703

    Thank you for your quick reply!
    However I cant manage to find the panic logs in the library/logs/ or any of its directorys. Ive looked for this logs before and my guess is that they dont get created if the panic occurs during boot.

    I deleted a large number of contacts on one iphone when i got a new one. icloud must have automatically synced to the old one, then synced my new one to that, thus deleting many contacts. can i restore them? can i retrieve a snapshot of my icloud as it existed yesterday?

    When a device that is connected to an icloud account has it's contacts deleted, the same contacts at icloud.com are also deleted and then the changes propagate to other computers and devices also connected to the same icloud account.   In other words, the contacts are deleted everywhere.  Also, any iOS backup to icloud does not include contacts or any of the other Apple data, like calendars, reminders, etc.  The only way you can get that data back is if it was on a computer which has been frequently backed up.  You restore the data from the backup.  (This reference to "backup" is a local backup, it has nothing to do with icloud.)
