Do we need a separate J2ee engine installation

Hello,
We are in the initial phase of MI design implementation. The first and foremost question that we have is whether we need a dedicated J2EE engine installation (for MI) or can we use the J2ee engine stack that we already have for EP 6. Our current system landscape includes
SAP WAS 640 with EP 6 ( latest patch ). No ABAP stack.
BTW, Our mobile purpose is to have some sap applications developed with ability to do approvals offline.
Any inputs & suggestions ?
Swami Bala

AFAIK any WAS 6.40 with both JAVA und ABAP Stack will do.
Here is the notes from the Installation Guide for MI 2.5 SP9
<<Required Landscape Components
You can find the latest information about the required components in SAP Note
670643 at service.sap.com/notes.
• SAP Web AS 6.40 (including the SAP J2EE Engine and the ABAP stack)
We recommend that you use the latest version of the SAP Web AS 6.40.
You can find the most recent versions on the SAP Service Marketplace at the
following Web address: service.sap.com/patches.
• Backend system(s)
If you want to use Smart-Synchronization: Each SAP system, whatever
release it may have, as well as each SOAP-enabled external system. Multiple
backends are possible.
If you want to use Generic Synchronization: SAP systems based on Releases
4.5, 4.6, 6.10, 6.20, 6.30, 6.40. Multiple backends are possible.
If your SAP System is based on the Releases 4.5 or 4.6 you also have to install
the PI 2002.1 or PI 2003.1 SAP R/3 plug-in.

  • Local J2EE engine needed for NWDS

    Hi Everybody,
I am new to NWDI. We want to use NWDI to make changes to ESS applications. The NWDI is installed with the Portal installation on the server.
I installed the Netweaver Developer studio on my Laptop.  I didnu2019t install a local J2EE engine only the JDK.  My question is do I need a local J2EE engine before I can start using the NWDI. I want to create a track  and import the development into NWDS.
Edited by: Stoffel Erasmus on Aug 25, 2009 3:48 PM

    Stoffel,
It's not necessary to have local j2ee engine.
to setup access to NWDI from NWDS go to windows-preferences - SAP J2EE Engine - select remote and give the host and port
go to widnows - preferences - java development infrastructure - development configuration - give the sld path
go to DTR perspective - create a DTR client by giving some name and DTR url and workspace
go to Development Configurations perspective - right click on Local Development- Import configuration
    Thanks

    Thanks & Regards,
    Anup Garg

    Hi Anup,
If you  want to install developer studio then you need not to install J2ee engine for this.
Actaully there are 2 products :
    1. Developer studio
    2. Developer workplace.
In fact these are not 2 products but if you want to install developer studio with local runtime environment then you need to install developer workplace.
So (J2EE engine + Developer studio)= developer workspace
you can install developer studio on XP, windows 2003 server and NT platform but not sure for VISTA. But it should work on vista with no problem.
but you can install developer workspace only on server platforms because it needs J2EE engine to be installed as a prerequisite.
in your case , you need windows 2003 server instead of vista if you want j2ee engine and  developer studio both.
In case you only want to install developer studio, you can install it from developer workplace DVD .
browse to Dev workplace DVD( Example path for version 7.0)
    DVD>IDE>IDE70setup
execute this setup. it will only installdeveloper studio.
please award points if above info is helpful.
    regards

  • J2EE engine does not start correctly

    hi,
after the installation of sap was v6.40 abap & j2ee, i cannot logon to the j2ee engine as described in the documentation. when i will access the engine by using a web browser, i get the following error message:
    "503: Service Unavailable"
i had a look on the log files and found these messages in the server log file:
java.rmi.RemoteException: Error occurred while starting applications; nested exception is:
com.sap.engine.services.deploy.exceptions.ServerDeploymentException: Container EJBContainer is not active at the moment and it is not possible to startApp sap.com/com.sap.lcrabapapi.
         at ...
there are more lines with error messages which seems to belong to the original problem with the ejbcontainer.
can anyone tell me how to fix the errors?
    thanks in advance,
    michael keller

    Hi,
    See note: 535532
Mid way through the note it says:
You can then register the SAP J2EE Engine as a windows-service by using the SAP J2EE Engine Config Tool. Open a command prompt and change to the directory <J2EE Engine installation directory>configtool and run configtool.bat or start this tool via your Start-Menu "Tools->Config Tool" of the J2EE Server entry. Select at the left navigation area of this tool the entry "cluster/ server" the checkbox "Enabled" at the tabstrip "NT Service". Apply these settings by clicking on "File->Apply" at the menu. Do the same with the entry "cluster / dispatcher".
After you have finished these steps you can register now the J2EE Engine as a windows service.
Start service.exe, which is also located in the directory
<J2EE Engine installation directory>configtool. It works with three
    parameters:
Service.exe u2013install u2013 the service(s) is (are) registered as NT/2000 Service(s). For each specified cluster node, a separate service is generated. All services have startup mode automatic. To start the service(s), open the Control Panel ¨Services folder. Find the service in the list of available services (for example: SAP J2EE Server 1, SAP J2EE Dispatcher 1, SAP J2EE Server 2, and so on). Select it, and choose u201CStartu201D on the right-hand side. No u201CStartup Parametersu201D are needed for the service to run. The system starts the particular J2EE Engine 6.20 node in background mode. It can be used and administered as usual. The only difference is that the server does not run in a console window.
There may be other notes along these lines.
You should also check any notes on the setup of SAP in MSCS cluster, as it will contain instructions for registering the services.
Hope this gives you a pointer in the right direction.

  • How to install local J2EE Engine for NTW4 Dev Studio ?

NOw we instaleld on local pc the Developer Studio and are trying to begin teh develop of java packages.
We are not able to activate the debug on the remote J2EE ENgine.
According the HelpOnline we should install a local J2EE Engine in order to be able to do debugging.
The problem is taht nowhere is written where to find out this software and how to install.
Anyone has some experience on that ?

    Hi Gianfranco,
I see. Then, you are right. You need a local J2EE Engine.
There is a guide how to install a Developer Workplace at:
http://service.sap.com/instguidesnw04 -> Installation -> Dev Env -> Inst. Guide - SAP NetWeaver Developer Workplace Stack x
    Hope, that will help.
And I guess, the following might be of some help after you complete the installation: http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/92/fa369fb68e004598f246494665a49e/frameset.htm

  • Does IC WebClient require a J2EE engine for any of its component

Does IC WebClient requires a J2EE engine for any of its component? What's the need to install j2ee engine on CRM server?
I would appreciate if anybody could give a good answer or any kind of documentation on it.

    Prakash,
The answer is yes in terms of the J2EE enginge being required.  It primarily handles your multichannel access and broadcast messaging for the call center.  If you don't install it, then your IC webclient will not work correctly.  We are not using the "telphony" features of the call center, but still installed the java piece so that the standard functionality would work correctly.
    Good luck,

  • WAS SP9 SR1 ABAP+Java Add in installation , j2EE engine is not running

I have completely installed SAP Netweaver SP9 SR1 WAS ABAP+JAVA addin and Installed XI completely. After few days j2EE engine stops running. I have applied the license after requesting from SAP Mareketplace and applied in WAS ABAP using SLICENSE transaction.
    Issue faced
    1. Tried to connect j2ee engine home page which is showing.
Dispatcher is running but no server connected.
Now I have removed the WAS J2EE installation and removed the client on which WAS j2EE engine installed. After doing this I tested the WAS ABAP which is running fine. Now I am again installing WAS Java addin. Which installed success fully and have seen the j2ee engine server page running.  But proceeding further to install JAVA Dialog instance I am facing folloing issues
    2. while installation step 8 and 9 as per SAP INSTANCE GUI .
    3. And J2EE engine is again stopping.
Can any one help me to install J2ee dialog installation and resolving these issues.
    Anand Verma
    HCL technologies

    Hi Anand,
J2EE Engine has a separate licensing mechanism. If the temporary license expires, the server will shut down every 30 minutes. You install a permanent license using Visual Administrator in service "Licensing Adapter".
In any case, a look into the log files of the engine can provide further information. They are found at
    .../<SID>/<INSTANCE>/j2ee/cluster/server<n>/log
    Kind regards,

  • Separate license for J2EE engine???

    Hi,
I have a J2EE instance with EP. I have applied a license key received in a text file.
After applying the license, I see the following in the system info:
    License Valid Till
    =============
    NetWeaver_MSS : 92431234
    J2EE_**** _MSS : 12
    My question is:
Why does J2EE engine shows expiry after 12 days? Do we need to install a separate license for J2EE engine?
    Any inputs would be helpful.
    Thanks, Abdul

    Hi Abdul
Did u request for a temporary license? U should go for a premenant license. And also, is this EP server, has ABAP stack on the same machine?
Are you installing the license in Visual administrator?
    Thanks

    Hi All,
I am installing XI with NW07. I had an ERP2005 server here with ABAP only. I installed Java Add In to it with usage type PI.
Now I tried to install J2ee adapter engine. It showed if i want to run a new installation or continue the old one.
I tried to install installation of J2ee adapter engine from a new directory.
It is stuck in between. I choose it as a MCOD to existing DB.
I can see a new instance for this in MMC and it is up and running.

I ran the prerequisite checks before starting the installation.
It shows everything ok except it told me to have a environmental variable as CPIC_MAX_CONV with the value 200 at least. And I did that.
All the other checks were ok.
All are on SAME OS and same machine.
I have J2EE Adapter Engine installation guide, but there is nothing for this in that
In Instance properties file for the old instance it is showing the instance ID which it is not able to find.
In the configtool of both the instances, the instance ID is same under cluster_data and this is of the newer instance
How did the instance ID and data got replaced in the configtool of old instance. I mean the new instance has its new directory or folder.
    What Could be the problem?
Did I do anything wrong here?
    Kindly help

  • Installation of SAP J2EE engine standalone version

For administiring J2ee on the WebAs, SAP recommends installing the J2ee engine standalone version on a PC. Where can we find the standalone version? In case, i use the J2ee engine CD available with WebAs, which mode of installation should i choose (1 - For existing Central Instance, 2 - Dialog Instance, 3 - Gateway Instance).
Can anybody help with this query?

    Hi Ashish,
What version of J2ee do you wish to manage ?
    <u>Generally</u>
You can use the J2ee server avaliable at SAP MarketPlace,Just go to alias /swdc and search for J2ee (Search for all categories), from the results you can choose the version that is relevant to you i.e. 6.20 6.40
As far as I know you can use the clustered server patch (If you only want to use the admin tool), these patches are full installations, unpack using sapcar -xvf [File that you have downloaded] and run visual.bat to begin installation.
I don’t quite understand your exact requirements but I hope this help, do let me know the outcome.

  • Cannot start j2ee engine after installation

    Hi All,
After installation of WAS 6.30 (Netweaver 04) on IBM AIX 64 bit (with db2) my server is running but very slow.
When the server is stopped and started the first time after the installation the dispatcher is running just fine but the server is not loading all applications. The server is timing out during load but with telnet it’s possible to load the applications manually.
I tried to change the memory settings as described in some of the SAP notes but still no luck.
The server is now failing with the following message in the dev_server0 log file (work directory) and the server is never writing to the output log file.
    ERROR => JHVM_LoadJavaVM: Cannot create Java VM (rc=-6) [jhvmxx_mt.c  466]
    ERROR => Cannot load Java VM (<default>) (rc=-1) [jlnchxxi_mt. 557]
    JLaunchCloseProgram: good bye (exitcode=-1)
Changing the memory settings back again doesn’t change anything. The server is not starting!
The server has 2Gb of memory, enough disk space and is running the correct JDK version.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance!
    Regards
    Michael

    Hi,
Thanks for the answers.... but the settings are already tried without success.
Finally SAP came up with a solution that worked.... deleting the file instance.properties.vmprop solved my problems with starting the j2ee engine.

  • Need help getting local J2EE engine to run

    Hello,
I have installed Netweaver Developer Workplace with MaxDB and a local J2EE engine.
I cannot figure out what all I need to do in order to have all the proper pieces of J2EE engine running locally so I can deply and run some simple servlets/JSPs locally.
I have gone into Administrative Tools|Services and made sure that SAPJ2E_00 and SAPJ2E_01 are both set to Automatic.
Even after doing that and rebooting I still don't see the J2E node as green in the management console. So I rightclick on it and choose start.
When I do that, a bunch of dos(console) windows open and run some commands and after awhile one of the nodes under J2E on management console shows up as green but the other one never does.
Is there some documentation somewhere that shows how to do this locally? I don't want to do it on a server yet.
Thanks in advance for any help.
    David

    Siddesh,
Thanks for your reply. That was a helpful link in that it got me pointed in the right direction. I found a document that told me to look in the dev_jcontrol file.
    There I found the following...

    [Thr 2904] *** ERROR => invalid return code of process [bootstrap] (exitcode=66) [jstartxx.c   1433]

Not quite sure what to do. Where do I check the database properties and how do I know which are wrong?
Also, in a subsequent post of that same thread it mentions running the following command in a command window:
    dbmcli db_enum
I searched the sap install directory (c:usr) and its subdirectories for a file starting with dbmcli and couldn't find one. Is that installed automatically when you install NDS Workplace?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    David.

Hi Any one Please help me!!

I then tried to add another usr to direct dispatcher method and gave the port 8101 instead of 50004.It logged upto 95% and gave <b>"could not open connection host"
if connected through look up connection</b>
"msgserver/text/logon returned empty list of parameters" or user authentication failed.I tried all ways but failed. Please help me in this pretext by giving a solution other than reinstallation of Netweaver.
    I am Using NetWeaver`04 SP14
    Thanking you in advance.
    Regards
    Prabhat

    Hi Prabhat,
Is your server up and running?  It sounds like that's the main problem.  If it's not up then you won't be able to login with the J2EE engine.  I had some trouble with SP14 in that the database service needs to be up and running before you try to use the SAP Managment Console to start the server.  Try shutting down the server, starting the windows service that corresponds to your database, and then restarting the server.
    Cheers,
    Steve
