Do you have stress queries

Hi Gurus.
We are in the process of testing 10g migration from 9i.
We do not have a real test set up with full volume of data
and load. The Company entrusted with me the smooth
migration from 9i to 10g. In the absense of proper testing
situation, I plan to do the following :
1) Collected tkprof of important sqls found in
v$sql area (highest disk reads)
2) Did explain plan with old stats and production stats
3) Run a long running queries now it is running for the
past 3 days with 16% cpu utilisation
4) Now I seek advise from you is there any standard
sqls that can be used to measure cpu time, elapsed time,
memory usage, i/o waits.
If you provide 4 above, I will open atleast 20 session and take
the system, session statistics and records it. After 10g
migration, I will run the same queries and find the difference. Hope
this is the best I can do to satisfy that load is not abnormal
after migration.

Hi friends
Thank you for your overwhelmed respose. In fact I have
gone through "Effective Oracle by Design" - Thomas Kyte.
I contemplate to do as below :
1) create a big_table (refer page 628 of the book stated)
2) do all sort of dml activities say select, update, insert and
delete
3) take statspack while I am in 9i currently
4) repeat step 2 above
5) take awr report and check.
In fact I expect you to help me in the absence of
real test scenario. I will be doing Bench mark testing
as guided by Tom.
Do you have any other idea, programme of stress
testing can be shared. That is the need of the hour.
I am fully aware of the debacle, bitfalls and I am in the course
of collecting all possible stats esp. tkprof as recommended
by Oracle.
Do reply according to the requirement that will make sense
of this thread and forum.
Thanks

  • How many Management agents can you have running simultaneously on a host?

    Hi all,
I've scoured the Oracle documentation and not been able to find a definitive answer to this question, how many Oracle management agents can you have on a single managed host target? Can you for example run an 11g agent and a 12c agent simultaneously (whilst migrating to 12c without upgrading the present OEM instance) If so can you run two 12c agents, each pointing to a different OMS? I’ve seen examples of an agent for each database instance on a host managed target, so a host with three Oracle database instances has three Oracle Management agents all pointing to the same OMS with each agent is monitoring just one of the database instances. There must be resource considerations here for memory, cpu and network traffic etc? I’ve always understood it to be one Oracle Management Agent per managed host
    Thanks

I don't think there's any data on impact or performance since it's not a recommended configuration. If you have host/configuration monitoring enabled on both agents, they will be running the same queries/scripts against the host/inventory, etc. so they will likely have contention at some point. If you monitor the same databases, you will definitely see contention and increased overhead as there will be multiple agents running the same queries. You might also see problems w/ any of the server generated alerts (tablespace, etc) if you change thresholds as the agents send that to the database, and then the database will be out of sync with the other agents.
What exactly is the goal for having multiple agents? Is it short term or long term?

  • I have some queries usage of RAID 1 on OSX

    Hi there
I apologise for the length of this question, but there's quite a bit of relevant data. I work in a small typesetting company (<10 employees) and since a HDD failed on an old G4 iMac that we used as a data archive we have learnt that without our data we are nothing. I have now been asked to implement a more reliable back up/recovery system (with minimum downtime) that increases the 'safety' of our customer's data. Rebuilding the archive took days to sort out and because the archive was constantly accessed by our production macs and a couple of PC as well, it hit us hard.
We are looking into turning an old G5 Powermac (1.8Gz single processor 2.5Gb RAM) into a RAID 1 (mirrored) system with 2 x 1TB SATA drives using Disk Utility. We would have this to protect against one HD failing and losing customers' data. I understand that this is not a back up system, just something that would protect customer's data should a drive critically fail. I have some queries regarding how this works though.
    1) How much (if any) maintenance is required on a RAID system? None of use are IT specialists - just typesetters with a bit of technical knowledge.
    2) Is a mirrored RAID system reliable, considering multiple people are reading/writing to the machine throughout the day?
    3) Do RAID 1 systems handle being accessed by different OSs (WinXP, Win7, OSX 10.4–10.6) well?
    4) Am I right in thinking that OSX would see the two drives as separate volumes?
    5) Should one drive fail and need to be 'rebuilt' via Disk Utility, can users still access the one working HD, or do you need to replace the failed HD and rebuild before anyone can access the data again?
    6) Considering Question 4 above, do we need to have a 3rd 'spare' 1TB Drive just in case?
    7) We are looking into a two-week backup system, backing up all the customers data on a daily basis, with the previous week's disk being stored off-site. We were initially looking into either Carbon Copy Cloner or RSync the copy data to external HDDs. How would you rate Time Machine against these products, and does anyone have any experience using these solutions with RAIDed Macs?
    8) Is there any 'downside' to RAID 1 systems?
I know this is a lot of questions, but I really don't want to start down this route unless I understand it better first.
Many thanks in advance for your contributions!

    Thanks for your reply!
So, in order to have a RAID visible and accessible by multiple OSs, and to eliminate downtime during rebuilds, a hardware RAID would be necessary.
Well, not quite. When you create a RAID in Disk Utility, the volume only exists as a MacOS X file system. Your Mac can share that volume to any other machines or operating systems.
What I mean by a hardware RAID is some box whose output port is eSATA or USB or some other non-network storage port. On such a device, the logic to create the file system is inside the box. Any machine that is connected to it would see only a single disk. You would still have to ensure that different operating systems could understand whatever file system you were using (HFS+, FAT, NTFS, etc), but that is the same as if you had a non-RAID external drive.
I have one of those. It is an older FireWire 800 drive that has two 300 GB disks inside. To any machine I connect that to, it appears as a single 600 GB drive. This particular device isn't designed for mirroring, however. If it were, it would only show itself as a 300 GB hard drive and I would have the capability to easily swap out the internal mechanisms when they fail.
By 'hardware RAID', do you mean inserting a RAID controller card inside the G5, or a separate storage device, such as a RAIDed NAS-type-thing? Would an ethernet-connected NAS be slower to access than a G5 with internal SATA? Am I right in thinking that those RAID-ready NAS devices cannot be partitioned at all?
I qualified the above to explicity avoid NAS devices just to simplify things.
I'm not familiar with RAID controller cards. My guess is that they are just a cheaper alternative to an external RAID device. It would allow you to plug your own hard drives into the controller card and create the RAID. They would certainly provide higher performance that if the operating system were handling the details.
If you want to have a RAID for data reliablity, you really need an external, self-contained device that has a standard hardware storage port you could plug into any machine. It would look and act just like any other external hard drive. But if a drive failed, a light would flash on the box and you could just pull out the failed hard drive and replace it with a new one. You wouldn't even need to power anything down.
For both RAID controller cards and stand-alone boxes, you may or may not need additional software to partition and format the drive. It depends on the model and manufacturer.
Such a device could also be NAS. In this case, it would have an ethernet interface instead (or in addition). The difference is that such an interface would almost always be slower than a true storage interface like Firewire or USB. Plus, you would usually have to let the box itself handle its partitioning and formatting. Since it is designed to be a networked drive, you don't need another machine to be the server. It is its own server. This is useful in those cases where you don't want/need a dedicated server. The downside is that it probably runs some lowest-common denominator Windows networking for maximum compatibility. Foreign, networked filesystems are always going to be more flaky. Some software may not work. Some OS upgrade may give you hassles.
To be honest, I'm no expert on RAIDs. In such situations, I usually just defer to people I know are experts. So, just buy the amount one of these: (http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/RAID/Desktop/), plug it in, and go. I suggest RAID 5.

  • I have some queries related to Nexus .

I have some queries regarding Nexus Architecture.
    1) We have MSFC and PFC for layer 3 & layer 2 communication in 6500 .
How layer 2 & 3 traffic is been handled in Nexus. Do they have a specific asics. What are those asics ?
    2) We have three types of line cards in 6500. Classic /fabric enables/fabric only.
Are all line cards in Nexuas are facbric only. What is the Asic which we use for distributed forwarding in line cards in Nexus as we use DFC in 6500.
Fabric modules in line cards are used for providing wire speed or it has other benefits as well. can i say it is just a kind of constellation bus which we had in 6500.
    3) Are there and D bus/R Bus / EOBC on Nexus.
I believ D- bus wont be there as it use fabric. What about the results. Does it use the same LTL index logic to calculate result. I believe it should as it is from same family as it is known as EARL 8.
How does it handle control plane traffic / data and result .
    Lets say I have a machine A connected to Module 2  port 1 ( M1 card)  and machine B connected to module 3 port 1 on same chassis(7018) .
What will be the whole process which it will follow. Let say layer 2 traffic will be handles by Superman and layer 3 will be handles by Tycho.
if any one can explain me the whole packet flow that would be  great.
    4) What is the role of Supervisor in Nexus. It has central Arbitar Asic which id some thing diffrent then 6500. VOQ is also handled here. Can we say if we use central Arbitar Asic on line cards ...They will start working as supervisor some what .
    Any comments will be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Namish
    3)

1- Nexus used distributed architecture and all the line cards support L3 except the F1 which you need to mix it with M series to get L3 functionality
2- nexus has diffrnet architecure form 65K however new line cards can provide you line speed 10G per port such as F2
3- Nexus uses fabric modules with full mesh channels between these modules and each line card ( provide you much more capacity than 65K for sure )
for packet flow you can find it on cisco.com because it long a bit however in brief:
    - Unicast Forwarding Distribution Manager (UFDM) interfaces
between URIBs on supervisor and IP FIB on
    I/O modules
    - IP FIB process programs forwarding engine hardware on I/Omodules
4- the Unicast Forwarding Distribution Manager and L2 forwarding manager are examples of what is hosted in the SUP

  • What index types do you suggest when you have...

If you have tables A, B, C and they are all partitioned range by created_date where that is a timestamp
If nearly all queries can only specify created_date on C only because the B's that belong to A and the C's that belong to B can all be in different partitions relative to their children. So if you have weekly partitions for A, B, C the C's the belong to B and the B's the belong to A can be in different weeks partitions. Now A, B and C all use surrogate keys and there's an index on all of them. You have one to many b/w A->B and one to many b/w B->C where any C has a 1 B parent and that B parent can have one and only one A parent.
When doing the join you end up doing something like
    select * from A, B, C
    where A.a_id = B.a_id
    and B.b_id = C.b_id
    and C.created_date >sysdate - 1
The problem is that the indexes on A and B are all global non partitioned as are the indexes on C
Right now we get partition elimination on C on a good day but when the optimizer decides go to A first we get none. Whenever the optimizer goes to A it often does partition range all scans because there is no partition key on A or B
    used in the query.
How can we get the query plan to reliably use C first so that partition elimination is always guaranteed.
Currently our thinking is to use /*+ ORDERED */ where the from is C, B, A
Unfortunately the programs cannot introduce bind variables so where we can use Baselines to manage the plan for a given sql_id the only way we can do this is to use CURSOR_SHARING=force via login trigger on their session. This forces the
introduction of bind variables in to the query but Their queries are formed dynamically from a GUI screen that optionally can provide different parameters. So not only do you have N's items in an IN clause to worry about you also have other optional parameters that can show up in the query depending on whether they are used or not.
    Q. Has anybody solved this problem by wrapping the query in a procedure so that you can pin the plan to the procedure where all that differs in the procedure is how the arguments are specified? This seems tedius to me because the procedure would have to take comma separate lists of values whenever you want to pass the values to be used in an IN clause.
Only if you wrap a query that can have optional parameters and N values for any parameter can you manage the plan for that procedure thru a baseline otherwise you simply end up with too many plans to manage because of the different combinations of the size of the IN clauses and the optional parameters that can be specified.
When joining b/w A, B, C etc what indexes should be partitioned?
The typical query uses column values on A to limit the C's associated with the B's that are associated with the A's that match those columns. Those fields on A have global indexes so often when the plan is one where it starts at A first and works it's way down it has to consider far too many rows from A that are unrelated to the eventual partition narrowed to from the C.created_date predicate.

    Dear Steffi,
The problem is that the indexes on A and B are all global non partitioned as are the indexes on CWhy are you saying that this is a problem?
What are the definition of your primary index on A, B, and C?
You can eventually add the partition key (created_date) to those primary keys and hence locally partition their corresponding PK indexes
As far as you wrote that there is no relation ship between A.created_date, B.created_date a and C.created_date, then I beleive you can't benefit from the partition wise join because in such case you need to join A,B and C on the same partition key which is created_date
Currently our thinking is to use /*+ ORDERED */ where the from is C, B, AUsing /*+ ORDERED */ is not a guarantee that the Oracle Optimiser will obey this hint.
    Use the hint /*+ Leading(C) */ instaedYou know that when you wrap your query into a static PL/SQL procedure you don't have to care then about the use bind variable. It will be used;
that is how static PL/SQL wroks. But when you are using dynamic sql into this PL/SQL procedure you need in this case to take care about using bind variable.
The auto-binding trick which is represented by the cursor_sharing=force (or similar) is not highly recommended as far as there exist side effects like the one that cames to my mind now which is when you have function based indexes based on litteral (for example a function based index like substr(a,2,4)) will be rewritten, when cursor_sharing is set to force, to be substr(a, :SYS_B0, :SYS_B1) which will not mach your original query and will not use the function based index anymore

Dear All, Good day!I just I really need your help badly with regard to my phone.  I used to charge the battery of my phone using USB cable on my laptop and today morning my phone is working just fine, but I was running out of battery so I tried to charge it. After few minutes, when I am about to use it, the lock code is not working anymore. I didn’t changed my password or done anything new and I am 101% sure that I have entered my password correctly. However, there’s a message showing : WARNING -"You have entered an incorrect password 5 times. After 10 unsuccessful attempts your device data will be erased."  The screen shows Incorrect Password (6/10), but I am entering my correct code again and again and still not working. I restarted it many times and still showing the same thing. Now, I can’t get in and use my phone. I tried to call my number and it still reachable. Thank you so much in advance

To: JSanders, Hi there! thanks for spending time reading my queries and replying on it.YES! I am 101% positive with my security code. Thank God I was able to recover it and use my phone again. Just an input for those who might experience the same thing. Using Black Berry Z30, once you have the dialog box saying:WARNING -"You have entered an incorrect password 5 times. After 10 unsuccessful attempts your device data will be erased." and shows that you still have atleast 3-4 available chances to enter the code, just type "blackberry" thereafter another screen will pop-up and will ask to enter again your password. As long as you are 100% sure about your password, you'll be able to enter and get it back. Now, I am enjoying again my Z30.

What is the largest database table you have programmed to? Did the size of the table dictate any design decisions?

    Edited by: user2701622 on Sep 28, 2008 10:11 PM

Definitely while designing any application table lot of thing need to take into consideration specially in case of OLTP database. The throughput that is response time should be very quick. DSS and Datawere housing queries take time there is no need to be quick response.
Amount of data growth in any transaction table in future will be major factor which can affect the performance of the application. So while application design this need to be considered.
Proper indexing should be maintained. Proper purging system ( i.e moving old data into history tables) should be maintained.

  • Do you have any recommended Junk Mail Rejection Servers (RBL Servers)

I'm running into an spamming issue that is causing my Xserv to get a mail queue in the +10,000. I am trying to find a solution that will help out this issue by subscribing into a RBL service and implementing a third party solution like Barracuda Spam Firewall. I still having figured out the best way to tackle this so I'm hoping I could get some direction as to what's good, what's not, and help that can make this endeavor less stressful.
I noticed this when i was receiving emails two hours late after they were being sent. I am able to clear up the MAILER-DAEMONS but only so many at a time. I would like to not have to do that every day as spam keeps coming in daily. Any ideas as to what things can be implemented to keep spam even getting to our servers and getting in the mail queue?? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks for the info.. I will read up on the content filters and implement what's in the front-line Spam defense as you mentioned.
On the RBL for zen.spamhaus.org do you have to subscribe to it or can i just place that under the Settings > Relay > Junk Mail Rejection Servers?? Sorry just want to make sure I do it correctly.
    Thanks for the help

Itunes wont open and when re-installed received this msg: Service Apple mob device failed to start.  You have insufficent privileges to start system svc.  Help?

Download Itunes from Apple.com, not from within Itunes.
Redo the install, following the below procedure.   However, when you re-install Itunes,  right click and run the install as administrator.   For Win 7, you have to hold down the cntrl and shift keys when you right click and then "run as administrator" will be an option.
Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (Vista, Win 7 & later)
Remove all of these items in the following order:
    iTunes
    Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall move on to the next item)
    Bonjour
    Apple Application Support
Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.
The uninstall and reinstall process will preserve your iTunes library and settings, but ideally you would back up the library and your other important personal documents and data on a regular basis. See this user tip for a suggested technique.

Can you have multiple apple id's for the family members but we all us the same iCloud account?

You'll have to have an ID you all share in order to have a shared iCloud account. It would be sensible for each person to have their own ID and their own iCloud account for email and their own data (each would be on their own computer/iOS device or user account on a Mac) and then have a common account which everyone would sign into in System Preferences>Mail, Contacts and Calendars to access shared data.
You don't want to be all using the email in a common account - if people are using email aliases remember these can't be detached from the account and transferred to another one. Having all your emails mixed up together can be somewhat impracticable.

Can you have two Apple IDs on one IPAD? One for school and one for home?
If so do you know how to do it?

It depends on what you want to do.
You could, for example, have one AppleID for iCloud backup [and therefore message syncing, notes syncing, etc] and a second one for iTunes [music, iBooks, etc].
But if you are looking for a way to flip everything between different appleIDs, then no.

  • Can you have two apple ids on one mac?

Can you have two apple ids on one mac? We each have iPhones and want to utilize iCloud.  Is this possible?

No, in this case the 2 user accounts with its own Apple IDs would be completely seperated.
If you want to share this things like music and app purchases you will have to to something else.
    1. Create two user accounts on your Mac (user A and user B).
    2. Create two iCloud accounts just for Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Photos, etc. (one for user A and one for user B):
On your Mac (with Mac OS X Lion or Mountan Lion):
Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > iCloud > Create an Apple ID (button in left corner)
On your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch (iOS 5 or later):
Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Add Account > iCloud > Get a free @me.com address and create a new Apple ID
    3. It is not recommended because you shouldn't share your Apple ID account information with other people but you could set up your old Apple ID as an account just for store purchases (Apps, Music, ...) so that everyone of you can manage the purchases in their own library (Access is limited to 10 devices). Therefore you have to setup this "old" ID in Settings of your iOS devices (Settings > iTunes & App Store) and in iTunes on your Mac.
