Do you recommend Server 2008 R2 to 2012 R2 inplace upgrade?

Hi
Do you recommend Server 2008 R2 to 2012 R2 in place upgrade for both DCs and member servers?
Thanks
Shane

Hi,
From the
MS support lifecycle, the mainstream support for Windows Server 2008 R2 would be end in 2015.
To upgrade to Windows server 2012 R2, please refer to the links below:

Anything is possible if you can script it. You could create a task sequence to do the following (with scripts):
    1. Demote 2008R2 DC to member server
    2. Remove 2008R2 member server from domain
    3. Build new 2012R2 member server and join to domain
    4. Promote 2012R2 member server to DC
You can do this. However, why would you? Just because you can doesn't mean you should. In my opinion it's more trouble and testing than it's worth. How many times would you need to do this?

  • PrintBrm.exe - Migrating printers from Server 2008 R2 to 2012 R2

    Hi everyone,
I'm trying to migrate our printers from a Windows Server 2008 R2 to a brand new Windows Server 2012 R2. While doing this, we also want to switch the drivers to a newer version. As I successfully tried this a year before with the PrintBrm.exe (but from Server
    2008 R2 to another Server 2008 R2), I choosed this tool again.
Unfortunately it fails at some point this time. The printer export and import succeeds every time, but if I'm trying to print a testpage on the new server, it won't stop printing hyroglyphs... Only if I install a printer manually (same driver), it works
    fine.
Do you have any solutions or ideas for that? For better troubleshooting, I attached an image of one failed testpage and the code I've written, too. Looking forward for some ideas.

  • Do we need CALS for windows server 2008 R2 and 2012 R2 if 2008 R2 is just a stepping stone?

We currently have a server on Windows Server 2008 RC SP2 64-bit with approximately 20 clients.
We want to upgrade to Windows server 2012 R2 but first need to upgrade to Windows 2008 R2 to allow us to do a straight upgrade.
Is it possible to upgrade to Windows Server 2008 R2 with the 5 CAL's included and then upgradeto 2012 R2 and install 20 new CAL's and keep all users accounts and domain PC's the same?

Ok sorry for using the wrong terminology... I was under the impression for each client (Computer) connecting to the server we will need a CAL (Client Activation License) in order for the computer to be a domain PC on the server. Do I need 20 CALS's
for Windows Server 2008 R2 and then another for Windows Server 2012 R2 if we are only upgrading to 2008 R2 to be able to upgrade to 2012 R2 without having to do a clean install.
For WindowsServer (Standard edition or Enterprise edition or DataCenter edition), a Client Access License (CAL) is required for each device (if you're using the per-Device CAL licensing method), or, is required for each user (if you're using the per-User
    CAL licensing method).
(whether you use per-Device, or per-User, is up to you, it comes down to cost).
CALs are version-specific (to a point) - i.e. if you purchased WS2008 CALs for your 20 devices, for use with your WS2008 server, and you are now upgrading that server to WS2012, you need to upgrade your CALs.
If you are adding a second server which is WS2012, and you are keeping your WS2008 server, you need to upgrade your CALs (because you only purchased WS2008 CALs which don't grant you the rights to connect to the newer server).
If you were to install your second server as WS2008, you wouldn't need to purchase additional CALs, because as long as the version is the same, a single CAL grant you access to unlimited server (of the same version).
CALs can be tricky to correctly license.
    Here's some introductory reading:
    http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/about-licensing/client-access-license.aspx#tab=1
And, none of this relates to the technical aspects of product installation/configuration at all (e.g. clean install vs. upgrade).
Windows Server CALs are not license keys/tokens/files which you install/load/download - Windows Server CALs are quite literally paper-based (just like a drivers license or car registration). You are required to have them, to be correctly licensed, but, you
don't physically do anything with them to own/drive a car.

  • Logical disk free space counters missing for server 2008 r2 and 2012 r2

I'm trying to get low disk space alerts for server 2008R2 and 2012 R2.  While the monitors exist for 2008 and 2012 (Not-R2), they are missign for all R2 operating systems.  Any idea how to either obtain these monitors, or create them so I can
get alerts for % disk free alerts?

What is your meaning of " monitors exist for 2008 and 2012 (Not-R2), they are missing for all R2 operating systems."? Does it means that the monitor is missing on all Windows 2008 R2 and Windows 2012 R2 machine or it just a blank circle ?
By default, Windows XXX Logical disk Free Space monitor is enable for all windows XXX. You may check whether an override to disable it. Moreover, Windows Server XXXX Logical Disk Free Space (%) Low and Windows Server 2008 Logical Disk Free Space (MB) Low
is disable by default and you should manually enable it.

  • Unable to configure BMR protection on Windows Server 2008 from DPM 2012 r2 server

We are trying to implement BMR and System State protection on our physical servers and have had issues when trying to set it up for a server running windows server 2008. I have verified that the DPM agent is up to date running version 4.2.1273.0. When
configuring the protection group and expanding system protection the only option is system state. When configuring protection on other physical servers running Windows Server 2012 I am able to select bare metal recovery. Has anyone else had this issue and

  • Install Server 2008 DC alongside 2012 DC

I have a test environment going on and it has Server 2012 DC(Name it 'A') installed. As test, I want to install Server 2008 DC alongside this 'A' server and replicate all data from 'A' server to Server 2008 DC and decommission the 'A' server . And then
I want to migrate from Server 2008 DC to a new Server 2012 DC. Is this possible? If it is, please let me know the approach to this project. Thanks.

You need first to check the following:
What is your current Domain and Forest Functional levels?
Is AD Recycle Bin feature enabled?
If your Domain and Forest Functional levels are Windows Server 2008 then you can add the additional DC and make it a DNS/GC server. Once done, you can transfer FSMO roles and decommission Server A.
If the your Domain and Forest Functional levels are higher than Windows Server 2008 then, if AD recycle Bin is enabled, you would not be able to lower them more than Windows Server 2008 R2. In this case, you can only add DCs running Windows Server 2008 R2
or higher. If AD recycle Bin is not enabled then you can lower them to Windows Server 2008.
The details about how to lower DFL and FFL are mentioned here: http://blogs.technet.com/b/infratalks/archive/2012/12/11/step-by-step-guide-to-lower-active-directory-functional-level.aspx

  • Migrating existion RD licence from Server 2008 R2 to 2012 Std Edition

    Dear team,
We have two servers with Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition. One server for Domain Controller and another is Terminal Server with 57 License (License Server). Now we have purchased New Rack server ( HP ProLiant
G8) and Windows Server 2012 Standard Edition. We want to replace our old hardware and OS, but want to keep (1) Domain Structure, Group Policies, Users  (2) Same license for Terminal Services. I have two questions.
    (a) Is migration of existing RDP Licence possible to new hardware and OS? If possible what Should be done?
    (b) Is migration of existing AD possible to new hardware and OS? If possible what Should be done?
    First question is more important.
Hope a favorable, detailed and early reply.

    Hi,
    (a) Is migration of existing RDP Licence possible to new hardware and OS? If possible what Should be done?
You could refer to the following ms article about moving Remote Desktop Licensing to a New Server:
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc730776.aspx
Meanwhile, for the license related issue, you could contact Licensing Service Center support
    https://www.microsoft.com/licensing/servicecenter/Help/Contact.aspx
    (b) Is migration of existing AD possible to new hardware and OS? If possible what Should be done?
    First question is more important.
For this issue, you could follow MVP's suggestion, adding server 2012 to your domain, making it as domain controller then do the migration.

  • Error upgrading Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 to 2012: 0x80070490

    Hi everyone!
As it is release day for Hyper-V Server 2012, I decided to go ahead and upgrade from Hyper-V Server 2008 R2.  However, I keep getting this error:
"Windows Setup cannot find a location to store temporary installation files.  To install Windows, make sure that a partition on your boot disk has at least 1198 megabytes (MB) of free space.
    Error code 0x80070490"
I have over 20 gigs free on the boot volume, and tons more on my VHD volume, so I don't know why it's doing this.  I have shut down all VMs, there are no snapshots, nothing cluttering up my C: drive, and yes I've rebooted it several times.  I have
also tried copying the installation DVD to a local volume and installing that way, but I keep getting the same error.  I know the quick solution would be to just format, reinstall clean, and pray that my VMs import into 2012 (which are already safely
on another volume), but there has to be a reason this is happening.
    Any ideas?  :)  Thanks!

    Hello Vincent,

  • Active Directory - Server 2008 R2 and 2012 R2 (Server Formatting or not productive

Hello guys, I come here to try to clarify a great doubts regarding Server Operating Systems, I will attempt to detail the most of my scenario.
Suppose I have a Server 2008 R2 in production, and this is my Active Directory server (meudominio.local) and am managing through Group Policy settings my workstations that are around 60-70 computers, guys my doubts the thing is, if I need some time to format
and perform a fresh installation of my server as it will be my Active Directory? Of course I will have lost my domain controller and I have to accomplish the placement of each workstation again that enters my domain one by one.
I know there is the option of AD replication, so we call the Active Directory, even for another version of the Operating System, prátia already realized this, but it most often comes not functioning properly, done without replication problems Server 2003 to
    2008 R2.
Guys like to know a solution to not having to put my plants in my domain network again one by one, is there any way to backup so that when I reinstalled the system and the AD again in my server stations return to "see" again that server as your domain
controller, even me installing AD with the same domain name before this formatting stations do not respond to this driver in this case do the Network ID or add the station to the area again, so she creates a new user profile for example (Max.meudominio) while
your old profile "guy" still remains on the machine, I adopted the practice of editing the record of this newly created profile and pointing him well for the old user folder which contains all data and settings, eg edit my key "ProfileImagePath"
regedit logged in with the newly created profile (Max.meudominio) ->
(switch "ProfileImagePath" C:\Users\Max.meudominio) thus pointing to the folder before replacing in the field again this season after formatted server, thus ->
(Switch "ProfileImagePath" C:\Users\Max), detail that we give permission for all such user "C:\Users\Max" folder, after that restart the computer and he comes back with the user profile and all your settings.
I wonder if there is another method to perform this procedure, do not know even a backup AD to not have to replace all the seasons again "meudominio.local".
    Thank you for your attention!

As the practice of replication I know her mostly said she has some flaws when I do the replication of my domain to another server but it works correctly, so having a server "master" and the other ServidorBKP as "slave", in redundancy,
the problem is when I say, and put the "ServidorBKP" being my primary domain controller and disabling my main controller, to disable or turn off my main controller the stations themselves are unable to login because it does not communicate with the
my ServidorBKP "slave" even I put it as the main driver of course.
Regarding the System State as far as I know this option existed in Server 2003.

"Error: 0x8007232B DNS name does not exist", suggests this server is now configured as a KMSclient, and it is trying to contact a KMShost to perform activation. It is not being returned any SRV records from your DNS, when it queries for _vlmcs._tcp
If you do not have a KMShost server implemented, you need to input a suitable ServerEnterprise product key.
When you purchase your ServerEnterprise license, you will be given a product key to use for this.
For this task, you can use slmgr.vbs /ipk
For your trial, you could use the method slmgr.vbs /rearm
this will only succeed 3 times, I think.
