Documents opening as read only

Since migrating to win 7 all word documents copied to iomega ix4-200 opening as read only--how do we fix this!
There are 4 of us using the iomega as a shared storage and it has become a real problem.  We did not have this problem before win 7 and it is not happening to every single word file every time but is happening way too often.  Don't know if it is a word setting issue or the Iomega not liking win 7.

Hi jwbennet, welcome to the forums,
sounds like some of the documents were possibly copied to the drive from a write protected drive similar to a closed cd or dvd; when written to cd or dvd files will become write protected.
Please try the following; click on a, or select multiple, folder(s) and right click on them, then select properties.  Ensure that the Attributes - Read Only box is empty and then apply the change.
Hope this helps.

  • Word 2007 - documents open in read only mode

Got a couple of users who are getting this issue. When they want to open some documents from a file share, it opens as read only (this is random)  - comes up with a prompt saying that this file is locked for editing by another user. If they close
it, wait a few minutes then it opens fine and they can edit it. It has nothing to do with permissions and no one else has this document open.
    Any ideas?

    Thanks for the reply.
Anything is welcome at this point.
And yes, I did try both through PowerShell and through the Unlocker and the behavior is pretty much the same. If the item is checked in, there is no trace that it is locked, if I Check it Out (the only thing I can really do with it) it shows as "LongTerm"
but then throws the same exception
    Unlocking...

  • Document open in read only mode

All users who are opening documents (excel, word ).  When the read-only or edit prompt comes up they click edit.  When the document opens up it opens as read-only and they are unable to save thier changes.
The server is sharepoint 2010. The client is Office 2010.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!
    Lital

    I found the problem.
I had this lines in the web.config that cause the problem:
    <verbs allowUnlisted="true">
              <add verb="OPTIONS" allowed="false" />
              <add verb="PROPFIND" allowed="false" />
     </verbs>
I added them because I had problem with anonymous users with office 2013 - when they try to open document that is open for anonymous they get login screen and when they do esc the doc open.
What can I do do fix that?
    Thanks!

  • After applying FQDN with SSL sharepoint2010 document library's document open as Read Only

    Hi,
we have sharepoint server 2010 installed in windows server 2008 R2. We build a document library. After that we installed Office Web Apps. Now,edit in Browser or edit in word/excel etc. all options are working fine.
After that, we configured the site with FQDN (Fully Qualified Doman Name) with SSL. Now, the
edit in browser mode is working fine form both server and client machine (for both windows and form based users).
But, When we are trying toedit in word or other office application mode, the files open as Read Only mode (both from server and client machine).
The users cannot save the file.
After trouble shooting a lot, we found many forum says to edit windows registry or do some other operation on client machine. But, in our case it is not possible to edit registry or do some other experiment on every client's machine.
Is their any option to solve the problem from server end, so that each client automatically can open the office files on their own PC and save them to server (instead of re uploading the files to server )?
Please, help us to give the suggestion for solving our problem.
    Thanks,

Is Alternate Access Mappings configured correctly? Is the behavior consistent across different browsers? What are you seeing in ULS logs when the document is being opened from the library?

  • Why do my Microsoft Word documents open as read-only

I am having trouble saving my Word documents as they are opening in read-only mode. I cannot find a setting to change the way my Word documents are opening.

Amy, are you reffering to the 'reading mode' in Word, which it uses when you open a Word document that was attached to a message?
There are instructions on [http://myitforum.com/myitforumwp/2013/06/10/disable-reading-mode-and-protected-view-in-word-2013/ how to disable that] although it's not in the scope of Thunderbird.
    Hope this helps!

  • GPO settings - documents in sharepoint 2007 sometimes open in read-only mode - needs IE reset to fix

    Hi,
We've got an intranet running on SharePoint 2007.
We also enforce alot of group policies to our users.
But there is a problem that keeps reoccuring:
On random moments, when a user tries to edit a document on any random document library in SP 2007, it gets opened in read-only mode.
The only temporary fix we found for this is resetting the IE settings in Internet Options -> 'tab' advanced -> Reset IE settings... and pressing Reset.
We think it is some GPO setting that we have malconfigured or forgot to configure and we hope that someone could point us  in a direction to troubleshoot or even solve this.
Thanks in advance for reading and providing help.

    Hello,
I also suspect that there might be issue with IE plug-in so could you confirm that? you can also tell su what plug-in you see in IE.

  • Document will only open in read-only mode

I created a .pdf document from a Word document in Adobe Acrobat Professional 10.1.1. When I open the .pdf it will only open in read-only mode.  I want to change the security settings to prevent editing before I send it out but the File>Properties>Security>>Security Method is greyed out and set to "No Security."  I have tried certifying and signing the document and even placing in a secure envelope with no luck.
    Help.
    Thanks in advance.

    Thank you Dave.
From MS Word, I am choosing Save as Adobe PDF.  In the Save window I reviewed the "Options..." and found PDF Options including
    Convert document information  (checked)
Create PDF/A-1a:2005 compliant file  (not checked)
Enable Accessibility and Reflow with tagged Adobe PDF (checked)
    Apply Security (not checked)
    Create Bookmarks (checked)
    Convert Comments (not checked)
I checkmarked Apply Security and attempted to save the document, however, received the following error:
PDFMaker cannot apply security when PDF/X or PDF/A compliant job option is selected.
I do not have the Create PDF/A-1a:2005 compliant file box checked so I'm not sure why I'm getting that error.

  • SP2013 and Project 2013 - project files open in read-only mode with no options to edit only Save As

    Hi all,
    Environment:
    SharePoint 2013 (15.0.4420.1017)  RTM
    Windows 8 - Project 2013 (15.0.4433.1506) 32Bit
    Issue details:
When opening .mpp files stored within SharePoint they are opened successfully within Project 2013 however they are opened in Read-Only mode with no options to edit/check out only Save As.  The
same outcome is experienced if you click the document link within SharePoint or you chose to edit from the document menu.
Opening the file through windows explorer also opens only in read-only mode.
To date we’ve tested the following
    Windows 7 – Office 2010 = working as expected
    Windows 8 – Office 2010 = working as expected
Windows 7 – Office 2013 = opening as read only, no prompt to edit
Windows 8 – Office 2013 – opening as read only, no prompt to edit
Current thinking is that it is an issue with either the SharePoint Office Documents Class ActiveX control or Project 2013 itself interacting with SharePoint 2013.
We have tested this in multiple SP2013 environments with the same outcomes.
The workaround therefore is to save locally and then upload again which is not ideal.
Unable to find an exact issue match to this.
    Any help with this appreciated.

    Hi Dan,
For us after investigating this further it was found that using the document menu to edit or checkout and then edit results in the project file being opened in read-only mode.
The same issue was present for Visio files.
Using the FILES ribbon menu results in the document being opened in edit mode successfully in both Project and Visio.
Please note that we found that this issue only exists within document libraries where checkout is required to edit which was our case.  If checkout is not required the document
menu can also be used as expected.
    Cheers,
    Dan

  • Why do attachments in Word open as "read only"?

Using Apple Mail, all Word document attachments open as "read-only" even if they were sent as read-write or plain .doc files. I have to save as some other file name in order to save them or edit them.
How do I eliminate this problem?
    McKenna

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work.

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode.  Shut down the computer and then power it back up. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the grey Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal.

  • Excel opens in read only mode on firefox. How do I edit?

If I open an emailed excel document in Firefox it opens as "read only". If I open the same document in Explorer I have the option to edit. How do I get Firefox to allow for editing excel documents?

When you choose Open in the Open/Save/Cancel dialog, Firefox usually uses the Windows TEMP folder. It is safer as cor-el suggests to save the document somewhere else either before or after making your edits. (My understanding of Read Only in Microsoft Office is not that you can't edit, but that you cannot save over the original, so you need to use Save As to save your edits.)

  • Help with a fcpx library that is locked "could not be opened. Read-only file system"

    Hi all,
I recently moved all my fcpx projects/events to a new Harddrive - I thought I did this correctly by copying/duplicating all projects/events from within FCPX.
When I last used FCPX all the projects/events were there - no issues.  Also, when I look at package contents - everything is still there in terms of events and file sizes.
All the library files are on an external hard drive, on an encrypted disk image.  Now a week later I have tried to open FCPX and I get the following error
"The document “MND_Z_FCPX” could not be opened. Read-only file system" and nothing will open.
Have checked permissions - these all seem in order.  OSX is10.9.5
Any suggestions as to what might be the issue?
    Thanks in advance.
    R

the permissions themselves look ok - they have my two computer profiles as read/write.   I also note that on some occasions the library has opened in my other Computer profile, but not in the one that I want it to open.
So I think you're right, there is something with permissions happening here.  I keep a work and personal computer profile.
Don't know how it happened - but the volume is definitely Read Only - even though I've created a Read/Write permissions for it

  • Shared folder files open as read only even though they are set up as read write

Hello, I've recently purchased a iMac to work alongside my mac book pro. Primarily, i want this for ease of use at home and as a 'back up' to my pro should anything happen.
I have a number of folders and files on my pro that I wish to access on the iMac and have set up shared folders to enable this with a new profile and read/write permissions. This all works fine until I open the document, make changes then find that I have to save as a different name as the files open as 'read only'?
Is there anything I've missed? I would of expected 'read/write' permissions to enable me to save files as edited?
Any help appreciated otherwise, I'll have to resort to copying files between machines which would be a major dissapointment!
    Thanks in advance

Found the solution...basically the permissions are not automatically cascaded down to sub folders and files so you have to do the following... modified from https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2743520?start=0&tstart=0
On the folder that you would like to change, select the Get Info and then click on the cogwheel at the bottom of the Get Info dialog.
Click on the menu pick "Apply to enclosed items ..." and confirm the warning message.
Then the same read & write permissions are applied to all the subfolders of the selected folder.

  • InDesign CS4 Files Open as Read-Only (Mac)

Having a problem where InDesign CS4 files sometimes open as read-only versions. This happens when opened by double-clicking through Finder, force opening by dragging the file over the ID icon in the Dock, or when opened through ID (file > open). If it's relevant, the ID file contains links to InCopy files that have been made using the Assignments Panel. System is Mac OS X 10.6.2. Any help &/or insight is greatly appreciated!

I got a similar kind of problem / error trying to migrate an InDesign Server CS4 solution to another server with InDesign Server CS5.
    Windows 2008 server.
I'll describe it, just in case it might give any clues.
Calling an InDesign server "open" script, trying to open an InDesign document, using a network path - although the file is on the same server - resulted in an error message:
System.Exception: 3598: Error from InDesign. Cannot save the document. No destination file supplied.
In the script there is a line, telling Indesign Server to call the save method, if the document is modified, which can be the case after opening a document from another environment, converting to CS5, and links that need relinking and other stuff that either InDesign takes care of, or that the script does.
No lock file ( .idlk ) was created on the server, but until I restarted the InDesign server instance, the file was opened as read-only when I opened it on my own computer (from the same network path on the server). I could then not save it from my own computer (the "Save As" dialogue appeared when I selected "Save" in the File menu).
After restarting the InDesign Service, the file was no longer locked (restarting the sevice automatically clears all open threads to the documents), and I could use and save the file without trouble, from my own computer.
Changing from Local Service to Administrator for running the InDesign service on the server, made the document open. Setting full permissions to the "Local Service" account, on the network share in question, also works, and that's the way I left it.
So my problem had to do with permissions on the network share. Since the service account was not allowed to do certain things, such as "modify" files... something went wrong.
Probably no lock file could be written either, due to permissions... then the open document and locking was handled by the operating system only(?), keeping the document read-only, and reporting other messages than the expected ones. It somehow seems that the document was neither open nor closed on the server (since InDesign Server has no user interface, I can only report what my method calls "saw").
Now - with the permissions of the service account changed - trying to open the document on my computer I get the correct message: "Cannot open the document [...]. You may not have permission or the document may be open already."
(When it was opened in a faulty state - with insufficient permissions - on the server, I could still open it on my computer, but as read-only, due to the missing lock file.)

Generally when creating a Word file from either a Mac or Win7 pc and opening it on two different machines (either one first) it always prompts that the file is open and will be opened as read only.
However opening a CSS file does not prompt that it is already open on or from any machine which is causing code edits to be lost.
What we found from out testing:
    - The file can be saved from one user to the server and WILL NOT PROMPT on other machines until the saving machine has the Dreamweaver program closed completely
    - The file can be closed and  Dreamweaver minimised to the launch bar but it still will not register on other machines that it has been changed.
    - Also, until the  Dreamweaver program is closed on the machines, it will continue to open it's saved version of the file.
    Example Scenario:
    - User 1 opens test.css (which is 2000 lines) and adds some code to the end of the file to bring it up to 2500 lines
    - Meanwhile User 2 opens test.css as well (opens as 2000 lines as User 1’s edits have not yet been saved) and adds in code to bring it to 2300 lines
    - User 1 saves his file and closes it - but  Dreamweaver is still open.
    - User 2 also saves his file and leaves  Dreamweaver  open.
    - The server will report the size and last edit of the file the same as User 2 as he was the last person to save it (and if you open from the Win7 Machine it will show as User 2’s 2300 line version)
    - If User 1 then open's the file again (from either the 'recent' in Dreamweaver OR clicking on the file directly in Finder...which version opens.... The version that User 1 saved! Not the true version on the server, but the version that User 1 edited and saved with 2500 lines in it.
    - Same for User 2, he will open 'his' version with 2300 lines in.
    Other information:
    - Files are opened directly from the server
    - Sometimes the users will save incrementally and re-open
    - Most of the time users will save incrementally and keep the files open
    - The users will never not save incrementally and just save when closing the file once finished
    - The users are usually working on the files all day
    - It is always the bottom lines of code that are lost. It could be a case of the two versions being mixed up and cutting off the newly added lines based on the line count (possibly).
It is as if Dreamweaver is holding a cache of the version locally and then only properly looking back to the server when it has been completely closed. It is very difficult to see how the server is causing such an impact on these files, there are very few logs which are giving any indication to the root cause of the problems.
Anyone know if this is a known issue?
Is there a way that there can be a featured implemented on the server that doesn't allow another user to open a file if it is already open on another machine?
    Thanks

Your server file handling has nothing, and really nothing to do with Adobe software. If files don't get locked for (over-)writing and/or lose connection to the program opening them, then your server is misconfigured. It's as plain and simple and that. Anything from "known file types"/ file associations not being set correctly, MIME types being botched, crooked user privileges and file permissions, missing Mac server extensions, delayed file writing on the server, generic network timeout issues and what have you. Either way, you have written a longwinded post with no real value since you haven't bothered to provide any proper technical info, most notably about the alleged server. Either way, the only way you can "fix" it is by straightening out your server and network configuration, not some magic switch in Adobe's software.
