Does it worth repairing a USB port of a laptop out of warranty ?

Hi ..
bought my pavillion (dv5 1135 ) 2 years back ,and had no problems since then until yesterday when I found that my external mouse is not working , and started getting message errors of malfunctioning USB port even after removing the mouse cable .
The mouse is woking perfectly on my desktop . I tried other USB devices but failed to work . In device manager , I un-installed all the USB controllers to force the system to re-install them but did`nt chage anything .. I almost confirming that I got a faulty USB port which I don`t know if it will cost me a lot to fix it , so I want to know that and the other cheaper solutions that you can suggest .(by the way I have only one USB port still struggling to survive ) .

Have you tried clean instalation of OS? or running factory installed setting using HP recovery disks? if the problem persist than 100% hardware problem.
If you are pretty sure it was a hardware problem, the right side of USB port can be replaced, see picture below.
However the left side is attached to the motherboard.
Download Maintenance and Service Guide and learn how to dissemble the notebook.
I repaired my friend notebook with the same issue as yours, by re-seat the connection of the USB board, no new hardware is required.
Sometimes it tends to lose due to heat or vibrations.

So my USB Port has been damaged (I honestly don't know how, I went to grab a snack from the kitchen, came back and my Playbook wans't charging anymore) and it's run out of battery. I have tried multiple chargers but none of them work and I cannot connect to my computer. Futureshop claims they cannot help as I am out of the warranty time period So I need to contact RIM but am out of the complimentary 90 day thingy as well. How can I contact them in hopes of having repairs done? Otherwise I have a $200 paperweight on my hands....

USB ethernet does not work in left USB port

My USB ethernet adapter does not work in the left USB port on my MacBook Air, but it works in the right side. Other devices, like my mouse, work fine in both ports.
Could I have a faulty left-side port with too little power for the ethernet adapter, or is this normal for MacBook Air?

I cannot print from my iPad using airport express. My printer is not AirPrint compatible but is connected to airport express thru USB port. My laptop can print with no problem thru the express unit. My lap top is no a mac.

I do not want to go to the expense of changing my printer, when there was no mention in the express details that your printer had to be AirPrint compatible or indeed wireless.

How to DIY-repair fried USB ports on Mac mini?

Accidentally I fried (or so it seems) all the four USB ports of a Mac mini 2 GHz Core 2 Duo 2 Ghz 2 GB 160 GB SuperDrive AirPort Extreme Bluetooth (released by Apple on August 2007) with Mac OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard. It was after connecting an iPhone AD/DC to power a USB hub.
I can access the machine using a wireless keyboard but the USB keybord or any other USB device is not recognized when plugged into the USB ports of such Mac mini.
I know that I can carry the Mac mini to a repair service or switching the main logic board, but it costs more than the current price of the machine!
I was thinking of some kind of DIY, even if it requires soldering... Any ideas to replace the fried USB ports with new ones?
Note: the USB ports and main logic board seem OK after visual inspection, but I guess that the former are fried since resetting the PRAM and SMC did not work.

DIY soldering repairs are pretty much out of the question.
Most, if not all, IC's that would be related to the problem
are of the BGA (ball grid array) variety and require special
equipment to remove and replace as all the connections
are under the IC.
The only DIY alternative would be to purchase a logic board
and replace it yourself. Just Google "mac mini logic board
replacement" for sources and how to's. Apple themselves,
will not sell you logic boards, so you need to get it from a
third party vendor. As to which ones are are the most reputable,
I cannot really say. I would suggest avoiding any Ebay offers
that are not reputable retailers.
As usual, be aware that if a price on such an item is too
good to be true, it probably isn't.

Why does N97 charge from some USB port and some no...

OK some seem to have same sort of troubles but I couldn't find an answer to this one...
So I have a N97 that charges OK when I plug it in computers USB port or in a (powered) hub.
But I also have a USB power adapter that I can plug in a wall socket and it has one USB port (5V/1A) and nothing happens.
Same happens when I plug it in my car using a USB adapter (not a actual car charger for N97).
Since every other phone/MP3-player/device that can be charged via USB works with these, I have to asume that this is something with my phone...
Has anyone else faced this and have found any solutions?

OK I have some additional info to this one.
I made some experiments with different chargers and cabels and here is the most interesting result (in my oppinion)...
In both cases I used my N97 and the USB power adapter (with 5V/1000mA output).
Only difference was how I connected the two...
By using the data cabel (Nokia CA-101) that came with the phone and nothing it DOES NOT charge the phone.
(and yes it is working cable, since I use it to sync my phone with my PC and it does charge the phone via PCs USB).
By using USB->2mm plug adapter (Nokia CA-100) and the 2mm plug->micro-USB adapter (CA-146C) it DOES charge the phone.
Since CA-100 converts USB to more simple connector then there must be something more happening inside CA-146C than just relaying those wires forward...
Any ideas???

The CCK ONLY sees photo and video files. (it works quite well with SD cards, so-so with cameras - there have been different brands that work better than others) It can also pull the files off USB flash sticks, but with limited success. I've had a 2 gig stick that does work, one that doesn't.
It seems to depend on whether or not the stick has big LED or preinstalled software like the sandisk or kingston do)

IPAD 2 Won't Charge on USB port on my laptop, my desktop Mac but will charge via the wall plug

I am confused on what to do with my IPAD 2. It won't charge via my USB Port on my PC that I travel with. Also I just purchased a new desktop Mac and it will not charge on that USB port either. But it will charge via the Wall Plug that came with it. I am worried when I travel to different countries to use the wall plug. I have an adapter to switch power. I am from Canada and travel oversees where the power is 240 vs the 120 at home. If I use my plug adapter and plug in my ipad to the wall Will I destroy the battey in my IPAD 2. I love my ipad to travel with but it is very frustrating when it will not charge on my PC or on the airplane. Then I am afraid to use the wall plug in the airport because of the difference in power. Would really appreciate some help here because I am oversees 2 weeks a month and only get a couple days use of my IPAD. I have all my books and everything on it and need to be able to recharge it. Does anyone have any suggestions?

For better future reference, you should be aware that the voltage means nothing when it comes to charging power. All that that is telling you is that the Power Adapter will work across that voltage range, i.e., you don't need a transformer to plug it into the outlet (although you may need different plugs, which is a separate topic).
What matters is the amperage (A) and the power in watts (W). The Power Adapter puts out 2 A @ 5 VDC (volts DC), which means it's producing 10 watts of power. It will output that across the entire voltage range.
A high-power USB port on a PC will put out 0.5A @ 5VDC, or 2.5 W. Be aware that not all of the ports on any given PC are likely to be putting out even that much power, at may well be putting out less than half as much. That's why you'll often see the "Not Charging" when plugged into a USB port, especially on Windoze laptops, and why it will charge very slowly even when it works.
FYI, the charger which is sold with the iPhone looks identical, is called the same thing, but only puts out 1A. It will work on the iPad but will charge more slowly. By that same token, the iPad charger will charge an iPhone just fine, it will just charge faster.

USB port on MBAir 13' out of factory broken, Apple wants 300€ to fix it: is it normal?

I bought a MBAir 13' and the USB port on the left side was broken: one of the 4 metal pins of the port was a little bended downward and at the first connection with an USB device it totaly bended backwards, resulting in high voltage consumption (short circuit?), thus being disabled.
Today at a Genius Bar they told me the problem was due to normal usage of the device and it would have cost 300€ to be repaired.
Question: is it normal/legal for Apple to make consumers pay for an out-of-factory broken device?
This is the first time that happens to me, I'd like to have your feelings/impressions/suggestions.

As kaufmann indicated, if you're outside the one-year and you opted not to purchase APP for the machine... then Apple can do whatever they want. You'd be on the hook for the repair. Now if you're inside the one-year and Apple is making you pay to fix it than the impression would be the mechanical failure is a result of accidental damage and then it becomes interpretation. I've seen a handful of machines (over the past 5-7 years) come right from the factory with "funky" USB ports but I made it a point to arrange a unit replacement or service on the machine within the first 24 hours of ownership. The longer you wait on these things, especially if it has been something you've just been "dealing with" the harder it is to determine a manufacturing defect versus accidental damage.

If you are having Windows issues then you need to be in touch with a Windows forum for assistance. You did not state how you run Windows (Boot Camp, Parallels, Fusion, etc....) so I'm afraid I can't provide any more help than that. If you happen to use Boot Camp, there is a Boot Camp forum available which is where the Boot Camp and Windows gurus tend to hang out. The same would hold true if you use virtualization apps such as Fusion or Parallels.

Hot Synch does not work, Treo 755p, USB, 17" Mac Pro Laptop, even with RevD installed and Allow other HotSynch applications preference check box checked

I am a long time Palm enthusiast who is frustrated. No more Palm products for me or anyone I speak to until I solve this problem. Someone at Palm should be paying attention to their long time cusotmers. I bought Palms in 2002 and 2003.
The support literature coming with two Treo 755p that I bought was so poor that never saw the fine print that there was three months of support if I registered the devices. The registration page does not let me register. All the fields are ghosted after I put in the serial number. I bought one in June 2008 and the other in early 2008. So never registered and can get no help from Palm now it seems.
So beside that gripe below is the problem issue info.
I can't get a Verizon Treo 755p to USB cable Hot Synch with my daughters 17" Mac Pro Laptop. It is using OS 10.5x She lives in another city so I am trouble shooting this remotely.
Did - Revd Palm upgrage has been installed.

That process worked however on my own Treo 755p Verizon as below:
After much work, hours over several months, I got my my Treo 755p Verizon to Hot Synch with a QuickSilver desk top Mac running os 10.5x.
Did the RevD upgrade.
Did in advanced settings on the Treo select in the Synch preferences allow other Hot Sync applications. Otherwise the Wireless Synch feature prevents a Hot Synch.
Once those both were done than Hot Synch works fine, and Wireless Synch works fine and does not interfere.
The Wireless on both PDAs is scheduled to be removed on both Treos due the economy on Feb. 4th, so I would like the HotSynch to be working so her Treo is backed up.

Works now, she had created a user ID as prompted when installing the HotSynch Software, but it was not the same name of the Treo 755p. The default ID was the one she from installing the software, so it showed nothing in address or contacts, but when she switched to the Treo ID than all her stuff was there.
