Don't know whether to buy a new imac

I would be extremely grateful if some of you kind folk out there could help me in this quandry I'm having. I am considering buying a new mac because I am starting to feel the pinch as it were on general preformance namely speed on my old mac. It's a 17" flat panel iMac
CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (3.3)
HD 80G of which 56G is used
Number Of CPUs: 1
CPU Speed: 1 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 256 KB
Memory: 768 MB Type: DDR SDRAM Speed: PC2100U-25330
Bus Speed: 133 MHz
It is also one of the models that came with the SONY DVD RW DW-U10A that well dosen't really work i.e. has never burned DVDs, now rarely burns CDs (music, data etc) and reads mabye 50% of dics put into it. On this point I have downloaded the instructions on what replacement drives to buy and how to install it if I was to go down the route of keeping that mac.
I, though not professionally use a lot of big and hungry apps. such as Garageband, Reason, Photoshop CS, Illustrator CS, Flash MX and iMovie and am going to start using Final Cut (probably Express) and Logic 7.
The mac I am considering getting after looking at bang for your buck is a G5 20" iMac 2GHz and mabye upping the RAM to 1G. I really can't afford a Power Mac Duel 2.3GHZ or anything in that range, what with having to buy a moniter as well.
So looking at the all the costs (i.e running my OS from an external HD, more RAM, changing the Superdrive etc.) involved is there any way of significantly improving my old mac to enough of a point so as to feel a real change in prefomance because at the moment things are really slow and sluggish.
Sorry for being longwinded and thank you for any advice.

I've heard that the new imacs have a trouble with overheating. My cousin has replaced his main board twice (under warranty). I don't know if this has been fixed (http://www.macnewsworld.com/story/45900.html).
The other thing to consider is Apple switching to an intel processor(http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20050606-4974.html). Apparently people who have hacked the developer version of it to allow it to run on a non-apple intel machine reported that the system ran much faster than the G5 processor (http://www.wired.com/news/mac/0,2125,68501,00.html). If you can wait a year or more, then you might want to go with one of these new machines. Of course, you would be buying a first-generation system that might have a bunch of bugs.
I've also seen some sites(http://www.macworld.com/news/2005/09/16/daystar/index.php?lsrc=mwrss) where you can upgrade the processor that you have now to near 2ghz. If you want to invest a bit of money without completely changing your system you could look into these.

  • I am in the market for a laptop, but I don't know whether to buy a Macbook Pro or a windows laptop

I am going to buy a laptop in the next month and I don't know whether to buy a Macbook pro with retina display 13 inch or a windows laptop. I like the simplicity of apple but windows can run more games like minecraft or league of legends.

    Hi Bueaucoop17,
The computer I would probably recomend for you is a Macbook Pro. I love windows for gaming, but they are not as simplistic and easy to work on as Mac's. I recently bought a standard 13-inch MacbookPro six months ago and I game on it a lot. I run Minecraft and League of Ledgends all the time as well as Team Fortress 2, Garys Mod, etc. and always get arround 60 fps. If you have 2 more years of high school and all of colege ahead of you I would recomend a Mac over Windows any day for work.
Cost can be a factor, though. A base model 13-inch Macbook Pro starts at around $1,000, while a basic 15-inch Windows laptop starts arround $500.
    Hope this helps ,

  • I don't know whether to get a new MacBook or not.....

I have a 2007 MacBook. Cheapest one you could get, with the small screen. Specs are:
    - 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor
    - 1GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
    - Snow Leopard 10.6.8
When I go to get HD information it says this:
    Capacity: 79 GB
    Available: 47 GB
    Used: 32 GB on disk
Been having a lot of problems. When I updated to Snow Leopard, things seemed to be better, but have progressively gotten worse. I tried cleaning up a lot of my files, but it doesn't seem to help. It goes SO slow (takes a full minute to open Safari, etc). The fan constantly runs. The batterly lasts about 30 mintues when not plugged in, it says I need a new one (don't know how much they cost?). I don't know whether to take it in or not. Would it be worth anything? There is nothing wrong with the disc drive. What should I do....

you can get a general value of what your mac is worth by entering info here: http://www.mac2sell.net/.  A new battery costs roughly $129 USD installed by Apple.

    Deef,
    1. Do not put one more dollar into you current iMac.
    a. It is 2.5 years old.
    b. You never be able to improve its performance significantly.
    2. Buy a new 20-inch iMac. Upgrade the RAM to either 1.5 GB total (add one 1GB module) or 2 GB total (replace and add two 1 GB modules).
Every aspect of the new iMac will be better than your current machine:
    a. Processor is 2x.
    b. Frontside buz 5x.
    c. Memory will be 2x.
    d. Disk capacity is 3x.
    e. DVD burner will work.
    f. Airport and Bluetooth.
    3. If you are adventuresome, you might consider buying a used PowerMac on eBay. I did. Just make sure that it has AppleCare or is eligible for AppleCare. (Do not consider the 1.8 GHz single processor with 600 MHz frontside bus PowerMac. It has significant (and as yet, unresolved) problems.)

    Thanks a lot.
P.S: For the iphone 4S. is there any difference for the one from online shop or the actual store?

iPhones purchased from the online Apple Store in Australia will be unlocked. To the best of my knowledge, unlocked iPhone are not available from the physical Apple Stores at this time, though you can call the Apple Store in Melbourne and inquire.
Note that the warranty on iPhones is not international, so if you purchase an iPhone in Australia and it needs service, you would have to ship the iPhone to someone in Australia to take or send to Apple for service and then ship it back to you.
    Regards.

by looking at the specs the laptop is better but if your not a gamer or graphics designer  then you most likly wont notice a difference in the performance at all so with that said a few downsides
the processor is i5 the i7 processor is the better processor the graphics card has half the dedicated memory that the laptop has and the hdd compared to the solid state is not much of a difference unless you wanna move your computer all the time you wont need a solid state drive
but like i said before if your not a gamer or graphics designer on your computer you will not notice the difference most likely

2.4ghz is plenty of processing, if it means you'll save money over the 2.7ghz. I'd have suggested 2.7 if you also do heavy video editing/rendering using FCP, etc... but the spec you have is plenty

  • It's an advice to Firefox and I don't know whether this option is available in the latest update of firefox.

if there are lots of tabs, then the button to close them individually will go invisible, so anyone who wants to close an inactive tab, he needs to select that tab to close it. i know there is a limit of space to include the close button if many tabs are open, my advice is, when one points to an invisible tab, the button to close that tab(only) would appear, so it is easy to close an inactive tab without switching to it. I don't know whether this is the right place for my opinion, if not please tell me where I can say this .

Is your middle click able to open links into a new tab at least? if not then you may have your middle click set to something else.
By default the middle-click should open links into a new tab and when hovering over to close them.

  • HT4623 I don't know what has happened but the update didn't work and now it asks me to restore the iPad. I don't know whether I should as i'm too scared it will delete everything i had on my iPad. What should i do if i did backup my iPad before the update

So i have a serious problem regarding the iOS update on my iPad 4 and i don't know whether i should restore it because i'm scared it will loose all the data.

You are saying that you DID backup your iPad so there should be no worries at all. After you restore the iOS, you can restore from the backup - and sync with iTunes, if you are using iTunes - and you should be fine. If you see the iTunes logo and the USB cable on the screen, you are in recovery mode.
    Read this for more information.
If you can't update or restore your iOS device - Apple
If you didn't backup your iPad, there is nothing that you can do about it now. You will lose everything when you restore. You can add you purchased content back to the device using the purchased tabs in all of the iStores or you can sync your content back to the iPad if you use iTunes.
No matter what, you have to restore if you want to be able to use your iPad again.

You should probably post your question on the Parallels forums:  http://forums.parallels.com

  • When someone messages you from their iPhone or iPad, you receive the message to your iPhone (or iPad) but you don't know whether it is from their iPhone or iPad because all your iPhone sees is one contact. That needs to be updated.

When someone messages you from their iPhone or iPad you receive the message to your iPhone or iPad but you don't know whether it is from their iPhone or their iPad. That needs to be updated.

    Why does it matter?
It's the person who sent the message that is important, not which particular device they used to send it, surely?
When someone calls you from their home landland, is it necessary to know whether they're calling you from the phone in the kitchen, or the one in the bedroom?

    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Go to Settings>iTunes and App Store and sign out and sign back in.
    - Go to a computer and go to iTunes>Store and sign in.

  • Help buying a new iMac

    Hello,
As the subject points out I'm looking to buy a new iMac but even after over a month of debating what iMac to buy I'm still puzzled. This machine will be a gaming machine, spec:
    iMac 27-inch
    2.93GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
    4GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x2GB
    1TB Serial ATA Drive
    VS
    iMac 27-inch
    2.93GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
    8GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 4x2GB
    1TB Serial ATA Drive
    VS
    iMac 27-inch
    2.93GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
    4GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x2GB
    256GB Solid State Drive
    VS
    iMac 27-inch
    2.93GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
    8GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 4x2GB
    256GB Solid State Drive
The SSD adds a lot more to the final price and I don't know if it is worth it... Me and my wife play World of Warcraft (aka WoW) so the i7 is a must and the I know for a fact that WoW is RAM hungry as well, hence why I'm thinking 8GB of RAM(I know I can upgrade later ... ). But still the SSD...? I have upgraded my MacBook Pro 5.5 (mid 2009) to a crucial SSD and I am very pleased with it, but will it make the same difference on the iMac? The i7, 8GB RAM, SSD is affordable but ... the price makes me think twice.
I am really stuck, I want to order it but don't quite know what to do...

As you know a SSD is great for startup and opening Apps and files beyond that that there isn't major advantage. Where you benefit from a SSD is by installing the OS, Apps and critical files onto the SSD and use the internal HD only for storage. If you are in the habit of turning off your computer nightly (Apple recommends you leave it on 24/7 in the manual) then the SSD would be nice. Also if you are in the habit of opening files and apps very frequently then again the SSD would be a nice asset. IMHO though SSD's are nice but a luxury and not necessary due to their costs. My opinion mirrors my financial status, however once they are considered more mainstream and less expensive I will probably jump in myself.
So my recommendations would be to get option #2:
    iMac 27-inch
    2.93GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
    8GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 4x2GB
    1TB Serial ATA Drive
however DO NOT purchase the RAM from Apple. RAM is user upgradeable and won't affect your warranty. It takes 5 minutes to do. SImply purchase RAM from a reputable source like Crucial or OWC.
