Don't pay double for FIOS ONT backup battery

My ONT started beeping after a recent power outage and I saw the red "Replace battery" light was on.  Verizon wants you to buy the replacement battery for $34.99 from their supplier
https://teleproducts.verizon.com/fios/index.cfm/eh/DisplayProducts?LOBCode=C&PromoTCode=A0760&PromoS...
but the same battery is avaialble for $17.95 at Amazon
http://www.amazon.com/Battery-for-PX12072-NON-OEM-Replacement/dp/B003LNIEIS/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_nC?...

(Slaps forhead - why didn't I think of that?)
I unplugged  the BBU and dicsonnected the battery - waited 2 minutes - plugged everything back in and Voila!  No more red light on the BBU.
But at least I know where to get a repalcement battery if/when I need one.
I wonder if that BBU red light goes on whenever there is a real power outage that forces the BBU to take over.  The one I had lasted only about 10 seconds.  I guess I could find out by flipping the the appropriate circuit breaker, but I'm probably not going to do that.

Is it possible that you are using the same password for the old O2 Study and newer O2 Apple Base Station networks?
If so, Keychain Access is storing the old information about the old network and may be associating it with your AirPort Extreme settings based on the BSSID that William has mentioned.
If that's the case, open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > KeyChain Access and look for a listing with the old network name. Delete this entry. You may need to power down both the computer and the AirPort Extreme and restart them.

Correct, if you've got the Photography Plan or the Cloud Complete Plan.

  • ONT Backup Battery Replacement

I'm attempting to replace my ONT battery to make the beeping stop.  I attempted to do it both here and through my set, but in both cases I get a message that says "this service is currently not working.  Try again later."  It's now been 10 days.  I give up.  My current battery model # is PX12072.  However, when I search this site it apparently does not exist.  The only one I can find is a GT-12080-HG (and you have to zoom in on the photo to see the model number, as no technical specs are provided).  Is this the appropriate replacement for my unit?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

The GT12080-HG is the original battery.  The PX12072 is a substitute.  Either will work, though the GT12080-HG has a slightly higher Ah. (8Ah vs 7Ah)   The main difference is cost.

  • HT4623 I want to purchase a ipad 32gb in the larger size but have read many bad reviews that the wifi does not stay connected and I don't want to have to buy another data package as I already own an iphone that i pay data for, what are my concerns

I want to purchase an ipad 32gb in the larger size buy have read many bad reviews that they have problems staying connected to wifi.  I don't want to have to buy a data package so I only want the wifi one.  I already pay apple for my iphone data and I can't afford more money.  Why are there so many bad reviews and are the newer ones that much better, according to many reviews they are not. Please help

I already pay apple for my iphone data
You pay your carrier for data, not Apple.
Why are there so many bad reviews
Where? Regardless, there are always going to be a handful of people having some sort of issue with any given device, but I would not therefore assume that you would be one of them.

Cannot install Mountain Lion on my hard disc, as I keep getting the message" 'This disk is used for Time Machine backups'. Which it isn't - I don't use Time Machine

Check to see if you have a folder named "Backups.backupdb" at the root level of your hard disk. That can cause this error message.

  • Brand New T410s Arrives Defective - I have to fix it myself - Don't pay the premium for Lenovo

Don't pay the premium for "Innovative and Professional Grade" Lenovo products.
I purchased a Lenovo T410s with an onsite warranty. It arrived and would not boot because of a bad hard drive. I called tech support and they had no record of an onsite warranty. I was put on hold and transfered to Customer Service. I provided my customer and order numbers but they could not find the onsite warranty either. I was required to fax my receipt to prove that I paid for the onsite warranty.
I was told I needed a second case number for the system software. Then I was told I would need to reload the machine myself. The system restore disks will take 3-5 days to arrive. So much for next day onsite support. Then it was recommended that I just fix everything myself because I could do the repair at my convenience.
I was very frustrated and regreted the purchase so I asked to return the laptop. The sales department's floor manager offered an RMA with a 15% restocking charge. I was told that it is company policy to require a re-stocking charge on defective products that technical support could fix. I asked multiple times for reconsideration and the floor manager said that was the final word. I asked to escalate my problem and the floor manager responded that I would not get a different answer because he was quoting company policy. I asked for confirmation that company policy was to penalize the customer if they want to return defective product and were dissatisfied with the support. He would not agree to that statement. He kept insisting that this problem was a minor inconvenience that tech support could fix, which meant shipping me the parts to fix myself. I said this was an unreasonable response to a customer that paid $1500 for an innovative, professional grade Lenovo product. The floor manager responded by quoting company policy again.
What the floor manager did not know was that I am the EVP for a Point of Sale company that resells Lenovo products. I will be moving those purchases to a new vendor with a commitment to a better customer experience. Lenovo better spend my $225 re-stocking fee wisely because they are losing my reseller revenue.
The rant of an abused Lenovo Customer and Reseller.
    Kevin Struthers

    Kevin,
I'm just guessing, but I think the warranty for your specific machine (via serial number) can be checked at this webpage:
    http://www.lenovo.com/support
in the warranty section.  I believe the warranty is activated at the manufacturing and starts when the product is shipped (that's pretty much industry standard).  Perhaps the manufacturing plant didn't activate the correct warranty and so it didn't show up correctly.
To the best of my understanding, if the hard drive turned out to be dead, they can do an on-site repair/ replacement if you do have on-site warranty.  I am not sure, but I don't know if the replacement of the drive includes the factory installed software on the drive.  (probably fine print somewhere says if it does or not).  If the machine is DOA, right out of the box, I don't see why they wouldn't just cross ship a replacement machine to you.  Did they give you this option?
I think I would call them back and ask for a customer satisfaction rep to step in.  And this time, tell them who you are.
    Hope that helps.
    Walter

No need to guess - that's why. 5GB per account, upgradeable at a cost.

  • HT3275 "The external disk must be erased before it can be used for Time Machine backups because it has an incompatible filesystem." What if I don't want to erase the disk?

I'm trying to use Time Machine on my Macbook (which is a year old) to back up onto a 1Tb external hard drive. I have 860 Gb free on the hard drive. But for some reason Time machine presents me with the statement above. How can I back-up my laptop without clearing out the data I already have on the hard drive?

Time Machine must back up to a hard drive that has been formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Your drive is likely formatted in FAT 32.
If you want to use the drive for Time Machine backups, you will have to erase it and reformat using Disk Utility on your Mac.
First, move the files that you do not want to lose to another temporary location and test to make sure they are OK.
Second, erase the drive that you want to use for Time Machine backups and format it for Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
Third,  move the files back to the hard drive.  Test  to make sure they are OK. When you are sure that the files are safe, you can erase them from their former "temporary" location. (Although I do wonder how you are backing up these files).
Time Machine will not touch the other files that you have on the hard drive.

  • Why Am I Paying Twice for What I Already Pay For?

I'm not sure this is the right place to post this, but unfortunately there don't appear to be any other options available to provide feedback on an issue.
There are two examples I'd like to cite as to why I believe I'm paying twice for what I already pay for.  First - one that is best described via an incident that happened over Labor Day weekend.  Late Saturday night, I finally had an opportunity to watch something I have been intending to watch as an HBO subscriber for a while now:  "The Normal Heart".  It was located in an On Demand folder called "Emmy Nominees".  About 2/3 of the way through, the screen froze.  I managed to get back to the Emmy Nominees folder, but at this point the only thing that appeared was the word "Empty".  I tried again the next morning, and not only was the Emmy Nominees folder gone, but the movie appeared nowhere in the subscriber's area in On Demand.  A search revealed that I could buy it in either SD or HD form, but could not rent it (not that I would).
Now - midnight had been crossed, bringing us into September 1st.  Perhaps the action was scheduled for that time.  However, why would Verizon decide to interrupt a real time stream that the customer is entitled to?  And then make them fully purchase it to see the rest of it?
But there is more to this.  Why would a paying HBO customer now be required to purchase something?  Here's another example:  I have been a big fan of Boardwalk Empire.  Previous seasons are now available for rental or purchase - but with the exception of the latest season being in On Demand (which I assume is there to grow one's appetite for the final season commencing shortly), even an HBO customer has to pay to see prior season reruns.
Perhaps I have more of a bone to pick with HBO than with Verizon, but it is ridiculous to charge a customer for what they have already paid for.

I agree 100% as to what you are saying here and I assume if we call Verizon customer support, we get a scripted response. That not all seasons are available On Demand, even if you are a HBO subscriber.
I had a friend check, that has Comcast. Boardwalk Empire, all seasons are available, On Demand.  So why as Verizon customers we have to pay extra if we want to watch, Boardwalk Empire, On Demand? If we already subscribe to HBO? It's like Verizon is double dipping their customers?
I have found that you can watch all of the Boardwalk Empire seasons on HBO Go, but I don't know about anyone else? I surf the web in a different room in my house. I like to relax in my recliner and watch Boardwalk Empire on my big screen.
I've been very happy with Verizon FIOs since I became a customer, but I'm also disappointed in the On Demand offerings they have and to have to pay extra for it, while it's available free to other cable subscribers.

  • Billed for FIOS TV after I returned equipment and cancelled

Please help me.  I have been a Verizon customer for more than 15 years, with Internet, residential as well as wireless phone service.  On June 23, 2015, I signed up for Verizon FIOS TV.  I was told by the Verizon representative that I could do a self-install, it was easy.  The order was set up for me to pick up the equipment at a local Verizon store.  I picked up the equipment on June 24, and attempted to install FIOS TV, but got no further on the screen, than “Welcome to FIOS TV’. I contacted the help desk, and it was determined that a technician needed to come out.  An appointment was made for Friday, June 26.                I then contacted my current cable provider to cancel my service, and several concessions and accommodations were made to retain me as a customer, of which I could not refuse.  I then decided to cancel FIOS TV, and this is where my nightmare begins.Events as they happened: (1) I contacted Verizon June 24, and a ticket was written up to cancel Ticket Number.   (2) I then cancelled the appointment with the technician; and(3)  I returned all the equipment to the Verizon store on June 25.                To my surprise, I receive my bill, and I am being billed for FIOS TV.  I contacted Verizon by chat on Monday, July 13.   I explained the situation, and was told that FIOS TV had never been cancelled.  The representative proceeded to go through the process of cancelling FIOS TV, and reverting my service back to internet and landline phone service.  At no time did this agent inform me that this was a new contract.  She assured me that everything was cancelled, and that my bill would be adjusted.  I received a confirmation email with the estimated charges, and this is where I see that I am under a new contract for a “Double Play” service, which includes FIOS Internet and Digital Voice.  But to my further surprise, for the 8/7 bill, I am being charged  a one-time fee of $34.50 for what I don’t know and  a FIOS TV activation fee @ $69.99, installment 2 of  three for $23.00, and my estimated bill is not $225, but now $182.70 with other taxes and fees.                Concerned with this email, I then placed a call to Verizon on July 13 at around 6:30 pm.  The agent’s name was Summer.  I then had to repeat everything that has happened.  She goes over my account, and it is clear to me that she has no clue as to what to do, or what to tell me.  She tells me that she is putting through some “ROX” ticket which would be sent to another section which deals with disconnection issues.  I ask if I could get a ticket number, or an email of this transaction, and she says no.  She then questions me about why I cancelled, and then things go really south.  To my ultimate disbelief, she begins to berate me and tell me that I should never have cancelled.  She further stated that I should have proceeded with the installation, and that Verizon has the right to charge me for the activation, because I actually saw the screen which said “Welcome to FIOS TV”.  I can’t believe that she is speaking to a customer this way, literally insulting me.  I reminded her that I had every right to cancel as long as I did so within the 14 day cancellation period, and that it was none of her business why I cancelled.  If a customer decides to cancel, it should just be a 1, 2, 3 action.  I also told her that she was acting very unprofessional and that I did not have to continue this conversation with her.  Before I could end the conversation, she hung up on me.                I was very upset after this call.  A conversation like this with a rude customer service representative is the very reason I will never sign up for FIOS TV, and furthermore, I am considering cancelling Internet and digital voice, even if I have to pay the cancellation fee.                 Remedy:  I would like my bill corrected as soon as possible to reflect no charges, i.e., taxes, activation fees, one time fees, etc. relating to FIOS TV.  I should not have to spend another minute on the phone with a rude customer service representative to straighten this out.                I apologize for such a long letter, but it is very important to me that you know the facts.  I await your response to this very important matter.

Your issue has been escalated to a Verizon agent. Before the agent can begin assisting you, they will need to collect further information from you.

  • HT5527 Why is it that when I bought my first generation iPad in October of 2010 the Apple sales rep at the Orange County California store suggested that I pay $99 for Mobile Me "coverage" and told me it was a "one time charge".

Why is it when I bought my first generation iPad in October 2010 the sales rep at the Orange County California South Coast Plaza store suggested that I buy Mobile Me service for $99 which he assured me was a one time charge and now, of course, Mobile Me has been discontinued and I've been "forced" to move to the Cloud and I'm being provided with another year of what Apple calls complimentary service with the clear indication that in a year I'm going to be asked to pay again for something I paid a one time charge for two years ago?

Mobile Me was the successor to .Mac (dot mac) which was "free" to all users but for a limited time. It included a free email address @mac.com and an amount of what we would now call "cloud" storage that went by the name of iDisk. iDisk worked great but with only dialup service for me it was barely useful.
So I didn't think much of dot-mac but lots of people thought it was worth paying for, so they did. Apple wanted to make it even more useful and integrate it with their portable devices which we all know as iPads and iPhones, and assembled a team to make it all work. This was to be called Mobile Me.
They failed miserably. Lots of people including me looked at the final product and said "huh?" Unfortunately for the Mobile Me engineers, one of those people was Steve Jobs. He first humiliated them quite publicly, then disbanded the team, including firing at least one senior manager who shall remain nameless.
This was the rocky beginning of what is now called iCloud, which is the "free" service I should have explained. iCloud includes an email address @me.com, and the 5 GB of "storage" which aggregates things like iWork documents, your email, calendars, Photostream, and iPhone backups.
You can buy more storage if you need more than 5 GB, but if you have more than that it's still free through September 2013.
What happens if you have more than 5 GB stored on iCloud and on September 2013 you don't pay? I'm not sure, but you have a year to think about it.

  • Suggestions for Fios in the New Year

I posted this over on DSL reports too, but figured this was a good place to make the suggestions as well.  I'd love some reaction from the folks who work at Fios.
    1. Ditch FYI and find someone better to provide the guide data.
    2. Add NASA-TV.  NASA-TV is now starting to provide some programming in HD and I think it would be a big draw.
    3. Create a new category of english language news channels from around the world.  I'd love to get news from CBC, Sky News and several others.  (you can find a bunch of them on http://www.livenewscameras.com)
    4. Make FSN provide a full-time HD feed.  Right now, it goes to an SD test pattern when HD programming is not on the air.  There's no reason they couldn't offer all the FSN programming on this channel with the side bars when HD is not on.
    5. Create a channel to advertise the latest features and programming on Fios.  I say this because we so often have to find out things here on this forum.  It would be nice if they'd tell us directly.  I'm not sure what their original idea for Fios 1 was, but it has yet to be rolled out to most markets. Maybe they could make channel 1 just such a channel.
    6. Fix the message light on the set top box.  The light never comes on when there's a message in the message center.  It always did when I had comcast.  I can't believe they can't figure out how to fix this.
    7. Streamline their websites.  In looking up information from Verizon regarding Fios, I have found I usually have to look at 3 or 4 websites to get it all.  There should be one website you go to for all your needs when you sign up with Fios.  I'm sure they'll tell you that's the case - but that has not been my experience.  There are a lot of good features of Fios that are online. (games, NFL network stuff, the ESPN360 access, etc)  They need to advertise this better.  It'll draw and keep subscribers if they do.
    8. Add an HD only tier.  Give people who want it the option of only watching HD programming for much less than they pay for the full Fios service. It would be pretty simple, if Fios has an HD channel, you get it on this tier.  That would include all the movie channels.  It would not include the NHL center ice channel or some of the other pay per view things.  Offer 100+ HD channels for 50-75 bucks or so and I think you would get quite a few takers even if that meant they couldn't get any SD programming.

    1. Ditch FYI and find someone better to provide the guide data.
I can only say that a lot of the info from ESPN this past weekend was totally invalid.
    2. Add NASA-TV.  NASA-TV is now starting to provide some programming in HD and I think it would be a big draw.
OH YEAH I'm ALL FOR THIS
Any HD feed any provider gets is from the actual channel so if they aren't broadcasting in it we won't get it. They also have to send it to us so that we can put it on the channel.
    5. Create a channel to advertise the latest features and programming on Fios.  I say this because we so often have to find out things here on this forum.  It would be nice if they'd tell us directly.  I'm not sure what their original idea for Fios 1 was, but it has yet to be rolled out to most markets. I am going to look into this.
    6. Fix the message light on the set top box.  The light never comes on when there's a message in the message center.  It always did when I had comcast.  I can't believe they can't figure out how to fix this.
I just go into the message box and remove the messages however if they are still there I'd try a powercycle. I don't have this problem on any box at my house
I'm gonna say yes in regards to this but I think the services is what will keep subscribers the most and could keep more if they were steamline I'm a Yes/eh on this one.
I'd Prefer not to pay extra for HD content and have it provided automatically
    Kudos! Thanks!

  • Can I select certain drives only for Time Machine backup?

I have several internal drives and several external drives connected to my MacPro desktop computer.  If I backup everything in all of the drives using Time Machine, the capacity on my designated external drive for Time Machine backup will soon be filled.  Is there any way to selectively backup via Time Machine from  only designated drives, not all drives connected (internally or externally) to my computer?  Is so, how can that be done?  I assume that Time Machine will start deleting data when its capacity is exceeded.  If that is so, and I remove the designated Time Machine drive at that point and replace it with a new drive, will the removed drive thereafter be able to be reinserted and the prior material read and transferred as needed? Is there any way to utilized Time Machine after I insert the replacement drive to only archive new material saved after the switch of drives?

Yes, mount the drive by opening a new Finder window and clicking on your base station's name in the left column that says 'Shared'. Then double click on the drive name to mount it on your desktop. From there, open Time Machine prefs and select that mounted drive as your backup disk. Time machine will then back up to it. Theoretically.
If you want that disk to automatically mount every time you login to your computer, go to Sys Prefs Panel and select 'Accounts'. Then click 'Startup Items'. From there, drag the mounted drive's icon from the desktop in to that startup items list. It will then auto-mount from there forward.
I have had many problems backing up this way with Time Machine. It will, 9 times out of 10, fail over a wireless backup with an Airport Extreme Gigabit base station and a 1TB Western Digital My Book. Nothing seems to fix, so I have given up. When TM is finally fixed - I will use it. Until then, it's junk software as far as I'm concerned.
But - best of luck. The instructions above are how it's 'supposed' to work..
