Dont Judge - I just upgraded to Snow Leopard. My computer is performing so much faster. Is this because of the upgrade? Also, what is the name of the latest software, please.

After a long time, I have just upgraded to Snow Leopard. My computer is seemingly running so much faster, could this be because of the upgrade? The reason it took me so long in the first place is I could not find the location to delete all the used memory. I happened to luck upon a place just the other day that said "all media". From there I was able to go through and get rid of approximately 15GB worth of memory. My computer has been saving multiple copies of all my images. I do not know how to make this stop happening. Has anyone had this experience?

10.6 is faster than 10.5 because of updated video drivers, however the machine will slow down if you upgrade OS X past 10.6.8 as 10.7 and 10.8 are more hardware demanding operating system verisons.
Also 10.7 and 10.8 will not run your PPC based software or older Intel software, requiring all new purchases.
From there I was able to go through and get rid of approximately 15GB worth of memory
What you did was free up 15GB of storage space on your boot drive which if a boot hard drive is getting near full will slow down the comptuers performance. Ideally it's best to stay under 50% filled, but never more than about 80%.
Your "memory" actually refers to the RAM which the processor uses as temporary storage space while it works on things.
Why is my computer slow?
My computer has been saving multiple copies of all my images. I do not know how to make this stop happening. Has anyone had this experience?
Sometimes the duplicates are actually thumbnails, or tiny versions for rapid display in programs like iPhoto with the smaller images to preview before you click the larger version, so they will always be recreated.
Hopefully you didn't delete the original larger files by accident.
The "All Images" is particularly dangerous if not used wisely.
Also it might have been you forget and duplicated the images at one time or another.

Open General preferences in System Preferences. You can set the desired scrollbar behavior there.

I want to upgrade to snow leopard from 10.5.8. Im hesitant to proceed because I'm running iPhoto 7 and word 2004. I want to be sure these programs will still run and I won't lose my photos or the events I have ordered them by. Should i make a partition on my new Iomega external and clone it just in case? I'm running time machine and backing up all the time onto an old LaCie, and right now I have a copy of my iPhoto library on new Iomega, which I recopy every couple of weeks. I got the computer new several years ago and it came with iLife and 10.4 OS I think.

Word 2004 is almost 10 years old, you will not be able to upgrade beyond Snow Leopard with it. IMHO you have gotten your money's worth out of the application and need to upgrade to Office for Mac 2011, this will work just fine and read your old files just fine too. What will not run beyond SL are all PowerPC (PPC) apps such as Word 2004. You will need to update, upgrade or replace any PPC based apps you want to use. I would recommend taking a little time and check for updates to each of your apps. Then open System Profiler (Applications - Utilities - System Profiler) click the Applications link on the left and then look for any PPC based apps, those are the ones that will not run. You can upgrade to SL just fine with the apps you currently have however if you want to go beyond SL (it's already 2 generations behind) you will need to update or upgrade your apps. You can take your time doing it but eventually you're going to have to begin

  • After upgrading to snow leopard my Epson printer drivers did not load and i get an error 'rasteroescpll failed'. I have tried reloading the driver to no effect. Can anyone help?

I have just upgraded to Snow Leopard and at the end of the upgrade the printer drivers failed to load. I have since updated them myself (Epson BX305) but still get an eror message 'rasteroescpll failed'. can anyone help?
I have an Imac previously running 5.8.0 and now running 6.3.0.
    thank you
    Hugh

The current driver version is 8.67.
    Delete you printer.
    Delete the folder /Library/Prnters/EPSON
    Delete the folder /Library/Caches/Epson
Unplug your printer from your computer for 30 seconds and then plug it back in.  You should be prompted to download the new drivers.
If all that fails, you can get the new drivers from Apple at http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1398

  • Free upgrade to snow leopard - bought computer in 2009

I bought my computer with Leopard in mid 2009 - at the time Snow Leopard was just released and I understand they offered free upgrades at the time for recent purchases.   Is it possible to get the free upgrade to Snow Leopard at this time and how do I go about gettting it?
    thank you all

Im fuming. Because 1 week or so- before this 'Free Release'- I purchased a Snow Leopard Disk as a 'step' to upgrading to Lion... I am a long time MobileMe user PAYING for the privilege for over 5 years.
I had to do the 'upgrades' slowly, as I am currently unemployed (between jobs) and had to budget the new OS upgrade in... (I rely on my 'mobileme' account for business/employment)... And then they send it out for free... I get its $29.00. But- when you are unemployed $29.00 could be food for the next week. Or half a tank of petrol to get to interviews...
    SOOOO ANNOYED.

  • Tiger Upgraded to Snow Leopard and computer runs SLOW, SLOW, SLOW

I have Leopardcy and itch'n for a cure! Has anyone loaded Snow Leopard onto a Tiger, 4.0.?? operating system? I was told I could. I backed up the info I had in my computger on an external hard drive first, then loaded Snow Leopard. Now it runs so slow I could cry. It took 90 seconds to open Pages, 4 minutes to get onto Safari. The Geek Squad at Best Buy store said to reload Tiger, but first back up the current info onto my backup with Time Machine. Questions: If I take Snow Leopard out and reinput Tiger, will Time Machine still be there?? Is it now in my external so it will work or ???? What will be the ramifications of reloading Tiger??
I may need more RAM, but I don't know how to determine that. Any ideas of how to figure out what it is?
Any ideas are most appreciated. Thanks,

It sounds like you have very very limited RAM and very limited free hard disk space.
The lack of RAM causes the OS to attempt to buffer information to hard disk. The lack of hard disk space causes everything to become 'slower than molasses' as the system tries to find free space available on the hard disk.
I'm wondering if you read the installation requirements before you installed Snow Leopard?
Snow Leopard minimum requirements are 1Gb RAM (but note that MORE is recommended) and 5-7Gb available hard disk space, just to install it.
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/Snow_Leopard_InstallationInstructions.pdf
Click on Apple, About This Mac, More Info. Memory shows how much RAM is installed.
Serial-ATA shows details about your installed hard disk but you have to scroll down to see how much disk space is in use and how much is available. If you have less than 10% to 15% of your hard disk free after installing Snow Leopard, you should get both a larger hard drive as well as more RAM (Snow Leopard runs pretty well in 2Gb).
Since it came with Tiger installed, I'm guessing you probably have a 2006 or 2007 1.83Ghz or 2.0Ghz MacBook with 512Mb or 1Gb RAM and an 80Gb or 120Gb drive. You can find factory specs for your model here:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/by_capability/mac-specs-by-machine-model-machine -id.html
TIme Machine was added with Tiger, OS X 10.5.x, so NO, *a Time Machine backup cannot be restored to Leopard, 10.4.x.* (And you now have a good reason to avoid that BB for future technical support.)

  • I want to upgrade from snow leopard to Yosemite all at one time.  is this a good idea on my imac 8.1 using OS X 10.6.8?

I am using snow leopard on a mac 8.1  can I up grade in one step to Yosemite or should I up grade to an earlier OS first?

Yes, you can jump to Yosemite directly. Before you do be sure your computer is compatible:
    Upgrading to Yosemite
You can upgrade to Yosemite from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Yosemite can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.
    Upgrading to Yosemite
To upgrade to Yosemite you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Yosemite from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Yosemite is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
        OS X Mavericks/Yosemite- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Yosemite
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
         Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
I would also suggest you do the following before installing the upgrade:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • I have an imac 10.6.8 upgraded with snow leopard that keeps crashing

I purchased my iMac a while back and it has ran great. When I upgraded to snow leopard I am having performance issues. I just did another small update and it seems to be crashing randomly and I have to turn it off then power it back up. Any thoughts on what it could be?
My CPU, Virtual Memory, Hard Drive Space  are all good, mostly un-used right now. Just trying to see if there is something that is known that would cause this now that I have upgraded to SL
    Thanks

Here is a cut and past of the log since the last reboot. let me know if you need something else. Thanks for helping.

Wondering if anyone could help me, my friend bought a 13inch Macbook Pro (2009) just before Snow Leopard was released. I know if you bought your Macbook within a certain period, you could upgrade to Snow leopard for free. However, does anyone know if this is still on offer? As he wants to upgrade to Lion.
    Thank you very much,
    Reece

No, seems like you had 30 days from purchase to claim the upgrade.  The same thing applies to Lion upgrades.
They will have to purchase the $29 SL upgrade and then purchase Lion.

  • Sleep indicator light not working after upgrading to Snow Leopard

Hello all, I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard on my mid-2007 Macbook Pro (Macbook Pro 3,1, 2.4Ghz Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM) and after the upgrade the sleep light no longer comes on when I shut the lid or when the display is powered off.
Not a huge deal, but might be an issue if I can't remember if I shut the computer down or put it to sleep last—I did not do a clean install, but would anyone happen to know something I could try before resorting to that?
Thanks, your help is much appreciated!

Have you tried Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)?

  • After upgrading to snow leopard my HP C5180 printer will not allow me to scan to the computer, it only works as a copier?

    Hello,
My hardrive crashed, replaced and reinstalled. However after upgrading to Snow Leopard v.10.6.8, my HP C5180 printer will not give me an option to scan an image to the computer. It only functions as a copier. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!
    Thanks

If your driver is up to date (you didn't say) then you can try Image Capture in your Applications folder or take a look at VueScan http://www.hamrick.com/

  • How do I get the upgrade for Snow Leopard 10.5.8 to 10.6.8

How do I get the upgrade for Snow Leopard 10.5.8 to 10.6.8

You will be ordering a Physical DVD with 10.6.3 on it, the last "Full Retail" version Apple issued on DVD.
Once updated to 10.6.6 or later, the MacApp store becomes available for any future Mac OS X purchases of 10.7 or later.

  • I have a Mac mini OSX 10.4.11 Intel Core Duo, 512mb, 1.83 GHz with iTunes 9.0.3. What steps do I need to take to get my music library to my iPad. I dont think I meet the requirements to just upgrad to snow leopard and/or lion. I want the music I paid for

I have a Mac mini OS X 10.4.11, intel core duo processor (not core 2 duo), with 512 mb and 1.83 GHz processor.  I only have version 9.0.3 of iTunes because it hasn't let me go higher, which I believe is because of the operating system.  I want to get my purchased music from the Mac mini to a different computer (that has the latest version of iTunes) and also my iPad.  The Mac mini does not meet the requirements listed to simply upgrade to snow leopard or lion. As far as I can tell.  Forgive me if I am lacking here...this is new to me.  What can I do to get the music transferred.  I have invested alot of money over the past few years on all this music that I should be able to transfer.  Thank you in advance if you can help me.

If you want to sync it to the iPad from that Mac, you need to upgrade it to at least 10.5.8.
If you want to copy the music to another Mac, you don't. Move the iTunes folder of the item in the Finder's sidebar over as you would any other folder. If you put it somewhere other than the Music folder, launch iTunes with the Option key held down and point it to that location.
