Doubling voices in rap music...Jim

Hi Jim,
just saw you're around. I asked some questions about voice doubling some time ago.
I like the sound of doubled parts on lead vocals but I often am not satisfied when placing doubles L and R to the main vocal (with eq and comp/does sound kind of nervous and also phasey - although I have real takes). Do you think there is a problem when using only two takes panned hard left and right. So there is no "center voice" but the result sound more transparent to me. I also cannot find any problems when listening to mono. What do you think about that?

If it's two separate vocal passes, you'll have no problems at all.

You can have iTunes reference the content where ever it is on your HDD without copying the content to the iTunes library, thus using twice the space.
If iTunes is set to "Copy files to the iTunes Music folder when adding to library," iTunes will copy all content that is added to the iTunes library to the iTunes Music folder. To adjust this setting or change the location of this folder, go to the Advanced tab in iTunes Preferences.

Additionally if you want the content to then ALSO be located in your iTunes Library folder so everything is all kept together nice and tidy, use this:
Consolidate your files in the iTunes folder
Depending on how you imported items into iTunes, some items in your library might be stored in different locations (in another folder or on another hard disk, for example).
You can consolidate all the files in your library in the iTunes folder—for example, to make it easier to move your library to a new computer.
Choose File > Library > Organize Library.
Select “Consolidate files.”Files remain in their original locations, and copies are placed in the iTunes folder.
To create folders (Music, Movies, TV Shows, Podcasts, Audiobooks, and so on) inside your iTunes folder, and place all your imported media files in the appropriate folders, select “Reorganize files in the folder ‘iTunes Media.’”

Try the standard fixes:
- Rest. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Restore from backup
- Restore to factory defauslts/new iPod.

Voice Over and Music App

I am trying to use the voice over feature but it causes the music app to start playing even when it is not open. I had my friend check it out and she said the music app is closed when this happens. It's too confusing to try and hear what I'm touching with the music playing.

Force close the Music apps in the muti-task window.
1. Double tap the home button to bring up the multi-tasking view
2. Swipe the app's windows upwards to close
3. The app will fly off the screen

As I got further into the project, the voice over audio started stuttering, and now it hardly plays at all with a motorboat sound when it does play. I've also started added music with the dsame audio problem. I'm running on a Mac PowerBook 2GHz using System 10.6.8. I have IMovie version 9.0.4. The project file size is 588 Mb. I have 274 Gb of hard disc space left. I have shut off all other running programs and even disconnected from the internet, but nopthing seems to help. I acts like it's a memory problem of some sort, but all other applications run fine.

It seems itunes is doubling the space for music?

I have copied 80g of music to itunes, but somehow it shows under "about this mac" that 150g of music is stored on HD. I have eliminated all double entries in itunes, no effect still.
Has anyone encountered a similar thing?

I believe this is the problem because I have noticed that when I delete a song from my iTunes it asks if you want to delete the song from the library or delete the song and move the file to the trash. When I choose delete the song and move the file to the trash, my original source file usually located in a folder in the User/Music folder is still present while there is a file with the same size in my trash. I can then empty the trash and still hold on to the original file. I may be wrong and there may be another reason for this, but because of the way this process works it leads me to believe that a file is duplicated in to the iTunes Library.

Using Voice Control for music in multiple languages?

Hi. I'm looking to get an iPhone 3GS and excited about Voice Control. However, I am worried because some of my music library is actually in foreign languages, with the titles and artist names written in their native languages. If I have Voice Control in English, will I still be able to request artists and songs in their native languages, or is this a current limitation to the feature?

What I can say after I tried: it works bad in most cases
I have my library in Russian and in English. This also applies to my Phonebook.
Option 1. If voice control is set to English (US):
- "Dial Олег" ([o:'leg]) triggers dialing anybody except Oleg , but adjusting to somthing like ['o:laeg] works, but is says "Calling <silence> mobile"
- "Play artist Nightwish" works perfectly
- "Play artist Ария" (['ari:ja:]) actually plays Арда ['arda:], but adjusting pronunciation to something like ['aeri:ja:] plays what was needed...
It never reads Russian words though, so it says like "Playing songs by artist <silence>"
In short, you can use it with English Voice Control, but it is almost useless for phone calls as you don't know who you call until he(she) replies or until you check the screen. At least, you will have to learn US prononuciation of all Russian words, which is often really different from the original
For music it is less awful as even if it plays something wrong, you have less troubles...
Option 2. Voice Control in Russian.
- dialing and playing Russian spelled phones and music is fine in most cases
- it does not want to recognise any word that is written in English. So you cannot dial anybody with English spelled name or any English-spelled music (like Nightwish), but it pronunces English words(!) (for example, when you ask, what song it is).
So, this is good if you translate all your phone book to Russian, but it is hard to translate all songs
In any language it makes pronunciation mistakes (example, Rammstein it pronunces as [ramsti:n].

Restoring Voice Track from Music and other elements - NOT KARAOKE Question

I have a 60 second mix of an audio track that combines voice, music and other natural sound elements...in otherwords, it's the end product.
I also have the Final Cut Pro timeline the project was created from, with all the raw elements in their proper spots EXCEPT the voice track. The voice track was deleted.
I need to try and restore JUST A CLEAN COPY OF THE VOICE-TRACK, without any of the elements mixed with it.
In there a way of using inversion (or some other features) and SOUNDTRACK PRO with the elements I have, to try and get a clean copy of JUST THE VOICE TRACK back?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

No. inversion and voicekilling only works when you want to kill (actually dim) a mono signal within a stereo channel. e.g. you could kill a kickdrum in a heavy reverbed musicbed. In your case, you want to kill the rest, and leave the voice, the mono part, intact. That's impossible. I think you have to record again..

Double click to play Music

I recently downloaded the 3.1.2 software I think. Before, I was able to press the home button twice to start playing music, if a playlist was already started, but paused. Now I can't, and it bugs me because I can't listen to my own music while using applications like games. Is there any other way to start playing music without going to the music section? ie. can I play my own music while playing a game.

Okay, so just a quick update on things. Judging by what you said, if the music stops when the app starts, that may sometimes mean that the app doesn't support you playing music in the background. However, if you use the music app before hand and you're on a selected album/playlist (I recommend making a playlist so you don't have to change songs) and you pause, then you can probably open up the app, double click the home button in the app (that brings up a box that has the play/rewind/fast forward and song titles in it, plus 2 buttons at the bottom: one says Close, the other says Music. The Close closes the dialog box and the Music opens the Music app) and you should be able to play your music. If it doesn't play, then the app doesn't support background music.
Try to go into the settings on the apps. Some of them let you turn off the sounds and then let you play your own music.

Now, for playing music when the iPod is locked. Make sure that you press the home button twice in maybe half a second. Think of the home button as a mouse and you're trying to double click a folder to open it. If you double press the home button, it should work. I tend to double click at a normal, if not fast pace, but try it. Also make sure that, when you go into Settings >> General >> Home, the double click home is set to "iPod" and the slider switch for "iPod controls" is set to ON. If that doesn't work, then I'm not entirely sure what to say. I'll probably try fiddling around in the menus of my iPod a little bit more. Also, you don't have to be in the app to lock the iPod and use the controls that way. You can lock it before you start the app and then start the music.

Hello, I currently have duplicates of all the recordings in my iTunes. Why is this and how do I get rid of them?

If they were taken by the iPod's Voce Memos app the in iTunes right click on them and select Get Info. Go to the Options tab anbd change the media kind to something that will sync to the iPod like music or audio book. Then movethem to that part of the your iTunes library if they do not move themselves. Then sync.
If not initiall made with that app I need more information.

HT1204 This isn't working - I am using iTunes 11.0.4 and an iPod Classic 120 GB. I have double the amount of music. I hate manually picking songs, so I want iTunes to randomly pick. Does this not work anymore?

Help please! I just want to be able to sync my iPod without having to manage. My playlists have also gotten too big! I don't have time to edit, and I don't see my iTunes can't just fill with random songs.

If the playlist you selected contains more music than iPod shuffle can hold, Autofill will sync a subset of the music. How can I add music from my voice recorder to music player

Connecting via USB is the easiest way to get files onto your device (unless you have an SD card reader), and you can just drag and drop into a music file on your phone. If you want to go the card reader route, unmount the card (menu>settings>storage>unmount SD card), insert it into the reader, and drag and drop. Other wise, you would have to email the file to yourself, save it, and use a file explorer app to move it to the appropriate place.
There are some WiFi solutions, but I have no experience with those.

How to get my data (voice memos, pic, music, video, books, etc.) back to itunes as my harddrive crashed?

My PC hard drive crashed and I had to format my PC. I do not have a back up for my itunes data. How could sync my phone to itunes without loosing my data?

iDevices are not backup devices, never have been.
If there is no backup, there is a good chance that data will be lost.
iTunes purchases can be transfered from the device.
Connect the device, stop the sync if it starts.
Select File > Transfer purchases. This will only transfer purchases made via the iTunes store.
Once complete, right click on the device and choose Backup... this should change the library association.
There are 3rd party applications that can extract media not purchased via iTunes and pictures previously synced from the old computer, search google or these forums and you'll find them.
Whatever happens, once the media is recovered, make a backup!!!!

Voice rather than Music recording

Back again for a new lesson on Mac stuff. I would like to record a Pastoral Sermon and put it on a CD for use by shut-ins and house bound members. The only method available at the moment is from a fixed audio output on the Master Amplifier. Is it possible to pick up audio off of a fixed audio output directly into a laptop running OS10.4.11 using iTunes as the recording software?

iTunes is not a recording tool. It does not have the features you need.
QuickTime Pro will let you record audio and there are other products you can buy.
You can also use GarageBand if you have it.
