Downgraded to Snow Leopard.. password doesn't work

Hello everyone. I've been having a rash of computer problems lately.  My Hard Drive (internal 1tb) in my iMac (2.8 Intel Core i7) has been shown as damaged and unable to be repaired via Hard Disk Utility. Thankfully I was able to boot off my Mac Snow Leopard DVD and install a new operating system on my 500k Firewire Disk.  However, when I tried to use the Migration Assistant to move over my applications and home folder from my iMac to my temporary hard drive, it copied over the apps and my old login, but now I can't get the old login to work. I log out, try the password I've been using for many years, and I now can't log in under that password. I've tried changing the password in System Preferences > Accounts, and despite trying it a few times, even closing the lock after changing it, I can't seem to get the password to change to anything that works. 
As a result I'm unable to start up some of my Applications (Adobe Creative Suite 3 and Vectorworks). I'm also unable to get a workable version of Safari to work as well. I've tried installing fresh copies of Safari for Snow Leopard and for Lion, both no dice. My previous system was using Lion, a copy that I downloaded online. My computer no longer recognizes the 1tb internal as a bootable system in Startup Disk.
I was glad that i backed up all my old hard disk info from my 1tb onto my 2tb external WD drive, but now it seems I can't access the data i need to work.  I'm not sure where my old DVDs are located for the software, so I fear I might not be able to get any of it working now.
Honestly I think it's upsetting that i even have to have all these **** passwords for a system that only I use.  I miss the good old days when you didn't have to add a thousand passwords.

What programs?  Your topic only mentions Photobooth. 
What exactly do you mean Photobooth does not work?  Please describe in detail all you have attempted to do in order to resolve the issues.

    So I've had huge nightmares over the past few days over Time Machine.
    So I've always been a big proponent of Time Machine. I always tell everyone that you NEED a backup solution, and while Time Machine may not be the be all and end all, it's a great starter solution for those that don't want any fuss.
    But perhaps not anymore.
    It just works, right? Well apparently not.
    So a little while ago I performed a Time Machine-assisted hard drive swap for a MacBook (not mine). That is, I install a new drive, boot from SL DVD, perform a HD wipe, then restore from Time Machine. It seemed to go well.
    Fast forward to more recently, I went on a trip overseas (Taiwan). While there, I obviously took a lot of photos, and it became that time again - purchase a new hard drive with more capacity for my MacBook Pro! HD were a little cheaper where I visited, so I not only bought a new drive for my MBP, but also a new drive for my wife's MB, as well as new external drives to upgrade our Time Machine drives.
    While I was there, I decided to update my own Time Machine first - following the instructions from Apple's own knowledge base on the matter:

    I transferred my existing backups to the new drive to continue my Time Machine. I didn't notice any problem at the time.
    Then I returned to my home country (New Zealand). First thing I did when I got back was to perform the Time Machine-assisted HD swap after making sure the OS were up-to-date as were their respective backups, on both my own MBP and my wife's MacBook.
    That's when the troubles started.
    First off, I noticed that a few images from my Aperture Library were missing. The album data and everything were there, but the actual files were not. They also did not exist anywhere on the Time Machine drive and as such never made it over to the new HD. Weird, I thought. They were there, clear as day on my original drive. They simply weren't backed up.
    Now I'm aware of a few TM niggles, such as the false backups after verifying a disk, but I hadn't done that.
    The second issue was much more major. My Wife's MB would be endlessly stuck on the white boot screen with the grey Apple logo. As it turns out, it's exactly this issue here:

    In short, the fresh Time Machine backups I made before transferring to the new HD showed no sign of updating the /System/Library/Framework/Security.framework/Versions/A/Security package, which is REQUIRED for the Mac to boot into 10.6.7 (it had an old one from before).
    Great, I thought, but maybe I can fix that by installing a fresh 10.6.7 combo update on the MB via target disk mode.
    No dice. On trying, it goes all the way to the end, and then fails installation. I had to resort to copying over the correct, more recent security package just to get it to boot.
    After booting, what to do? Who knows what other files Time Machine failed to update, and what consequences they would have. After putting back the original security package, I tried updating 10.6.7 again. Nope, no dmgs would open - i HAD to use the new Security package for anything to open. Fair enough, but even with that, the installation would inevitably fail.
    Problem with the package? Nope. Tried a fresh download, and checked the SHA and everything.
    Time to do some blitzing. I pulled out my trusty Snow Leopard DVD and did a reinstall on top. That's gotta get my problem, right? Well, nope. After resetting to 10.6.0, the 10.6.7 combo updater STILL failed on installation. Furthermore, the updater no longer worked on MY MBP either.
    What gives?

    In short, some files had the user immutable flag switched on, preventing changes from being made to those files (manifests as a little lock icon on the file icon). They included (and I'm sure not limited to) the Acknowledgement.rtfs in /Library/Documentation/, as well as a majority of the fonts in /Library/Fonts.
    Checking back in the backup drives, it was clear that Time Machine was the culprit - instances of those files in the backups were also locked. When did that happen? Looking back, it looks like it happened when I transferred the backups from one Time Machine drive to another. But it wasn't all at once - in the first backup on one drive, one of the Acknowledgement.rtf files was locked, and the other one wasn't, but in the second onwards, both were. It was clear that Time Machine seemed to be doing it to those files. Which files and why? I have no idea.
    So removing the uchg flag with "sudo chflags -R nouchg /" in terminal finally allowed me to apply the 10.6.7 combo update without failure.
    So were the troubles over then?
    Nope.
    While checking if everything was fine, I noticed iPhoto on the MB had all the thumbs missing - after rebuilding, they weren't back, and only a .plist trashing fixed it (I consider this pretty normal - probably looking for the files on the old UUID drive or something).
    But what gives? ALL the photos taken on the trip were gone! Not just the thumbs - the actual files were missing from the iPhoto Library! The data in the albums existed, just the actual files, just like my instance in Aperture on my own MBP.
    Checked the Time Machine - again, it was clear Time Machine had completely stuffed up - the files were nowhere to be found on the Time Machine drive.
    So currently, I've returned the original internal drive to the MacBook, performing a FRESH on new reformatted disk Time MAchine, and will use THAT to restore.
    Nightmares, indeed. It's several days of work doing all the restores, considering I have limited drives to work with. And yes, rest-assured, I was doing enough permission repairs, and PRAM resets to ensure they weren't issues.
    It occurs to me there are several faults with the most recent version of Time Machine (maybe 10.6.6 or something as that's when people had some of the issues above):
    1) At some point in time, Time Machine may not update a necessary Security package (and probably other files too - I believe the files around it were also not updated), meaning that if you use that Time Machine to restore, the outdated package will cause your computer to fail to boot.
    2) Transferring your backups to a new destination Time Machine drive may cause certain files to become user immutable or 'locked', with one consequence being you cannot update the OS.
    3) Time Machine may fail to backup image files with the Aperture or iPhoto Library. Trying to remember back, I *think* this may be related to the fact that we changed time zones, as the unupdated image files were after the zones were changed. Strangely, every other file within the Library packages were updated, as album data was updated - just not the actual image files and folders.
    Conclusion? I no longer trust Time Machine. The basic foundation of a backup service is that you trust it to do what it's supposed to do. After all this, how can I?
    You might think they are isolated incidents, but they were occurring on two Macs that I have, and they same errors can be found in others.I think I have detailed some root causes, but who really knows.
    At any rate you should keep an eye on at least these files I have detailed. Would love to hear Pondini on the matter, as I know he knows a lot about Time Machine.

    Someone has suggested just installing Snow Leopard on the machine. Will that work?
    If you can find a copy of the workstation version of Snow Leopard shipped with the same model of Mac mini, yes. Apple has not, to my knowledge, shipped a retail version of Snow Leopard new enough to boot your mini.
    I've also heard there is a way to install SL while connected to my old Powerbook in order to suck the entire old drive onto the new machine in an operable manner. Is this accurate, and can this be done if my old machine is the Powerbook on the old apple chip when the new machine is intel based
    No, it's not accurate. The OS on your PowerBook will not boot your mini.
    what are the differences between the single pack and the family pack?
    If you mean single and family pack of Mac OS X, the single pack is licensed for installation on one computer only, while the family pack is licensed for installation on up to five Macs.

  • Snow leopard dvd doesn't work

    I bought snow leopard DVD but it seems corrupted. I put inside the Mac and it spit it out immediately. (I tried both sides ... :-) ... many times).
    Other CDs and DVDs works fine.
    My question is: since I have an original version and a serial number printed somewhere (I hope) on the Disk or on the package, is there a place where download the Mac OS Snow Leopard from?

    No, you can't download Snow Leopard.  You'll need to contact Apple and they will replace the disk.

  • How to Downgrade to Snow Leopard from Retail disk

    Hi there
    We have a new iMac at work bought through Apple's refurb site. It is running the latest version of Lion with all firmware updates, etc. It is replacing a G5 running Tiger.
    The problem is this – it is supposed to be running Adobe CS5, but also CS4 (and Office would be handly also)
    We have other macs here, some running Leopard, some Snow Leopard, but the Adobe apps are not happy at all in Lion, and InDesign CS4 crashes all the time and won't even print without jumping through a million hoops (obviously the Office 2004 app won't run at all).
    Due to the level of issues we are having with Lion (and the reliability of the all the software under Snow Leopard) I am looking to downgrade to Snow Leopard.
    I have a full retail version of Snow Leopard (10.6.3), but the Lion system won't boot from the disk, it just gets to the grey screen, and beeps three times. I presume this means that there isn't the required drivers on the disk to run the hardware, or there's a firmware update that doesn't allow installation.
    Am i totally stuck with this OS? I was looking to install Snow Leopard on a partiton, but when i run the install disk from the Lion desktop, it reports that I can't run it because 'I have Install Mac OS X 23.1.1.'
    I would really like to just have Snow Leopard on my iMac, or failing that, Lion on a small partition, and Snow Leopard and all the programs on the larger partition that I would boot from.
    Any ideas how I can get this done? Adobe CS suite is just rubbish on Lion macs, and runs worse than on my old Tiger mac.

Unless I missed it, we don't really know which iMac you have since it's a refurb. According to Mactracker, only the Late 2011 21.5" comes only with Lion and might not accept Snow Leopard at all. At the same time, it has the same Model Identifier as the Mid 2011, which came with 10.6.6 or 10.6.7 so it might work.
    If at that point Mac A does boot in Snow Leopard, I'd advise running the 10.6.8 Combo updater again while booting from Mac A just to be safe.

    What was this program for, or did you just assume it's something you shouldn't have and therefore arbitrarily decide to "throw it away"? Exactly how did you supposedly throw it away?
    If you didn't change your administrator password, there's no reason it shouldn't work now, so that suggests you did something else, or changed it and then forgot what it was.
    You can't recover that password; you can only change it. To do that, you would need to boot from your Snow Leopard DVD, choose your language, then choose Reset Password from the Utilities menu in the top menu bar.

    I like Lion in many ways and it has some nice features, but I have been having wifi trouble, programs not working, safari acting wonky, etc. since installing Lion. Can someone give the tips, etc needed to downgrade to Snow Leopard until Lion's bugs are ironed out? Is it doable? Will it cause other problem? Is it very time consuming? Thanks!
    I got into Mac's in 2006 to escape all the Windows troubles... Lion so far is giving me flashbacks. Whew!

    P.S. BTW, my iPhone 4 has no wifi since uprading. I did the Lion upgrade and the iPhone 4.3.4 upgrade on the same day.

    Backup ALL your Users folders manually to a external drive and disconnect, your going to be wiping the entire disk (Windows files too)
    Hold c and boot off the 10.6 installer disk that comes with your computer and second screen in just STOP.
    Look at the Utilities Menu for Disk Utility.
    On the left is the name of your hard drive maker, click it and Erase (format HFS+ Journaled), give it the same name as before, and click Erase...
    This should wipe the drive of all three partitions (GUID, OS X and 10.7 Recovery)
    When it's done, quit and install OS X 10.6. Then install all your programs from fresh sources and validate/update.
    Update OS X to 10.6.8 using the Combo Update for best results.

    When you setup a account, use the same user name as before, this way you can simply drag and drop your Users folders right back in and everything should work peachy.
    If your original machine had 10.5 and you want the free iLife that comes with the disks with the computer, then you'll have to install 10.5 first, then 10.6, then Combo Update.
    A lot of people use a Carbon Copy Clone of their boot drive to a HFS+Journaled external drive as a "hold the option key" bootable backup in case something goes bad.  (in addition to TimeMachine for more immediate backups.)
    If the above doesn't work, then I would suggest trying to restore your machine to a TimeMachine saved time without Lion. If that doesn't work then I would try doing what the above directions state, but going to the Apple Icon and selecting StartUp then choosing your bootable disk.

    Well, you can try easing the shift key up with something thin but flexible (credit card sort of thing) but if the contacts below are stuck you may need to get it seen to by an authorised repairer.
    If you can borrow a keyboard (a PC one will probably work as long as the password is alpha-numeric with no special characters) you can at least get in to backup your HD before going for repair.

Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
    This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.4.1.
    If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups, do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion files.

    Can someone please tell me how I can downgrade from OSX Lion to Snow Leopard on my brand new 27" iMac.
    I spoke to Apple over a week ago on the phone and explained that I wanted to downgrade to Snow Leopard and the chap I spoke to sold me the Snow Leopard upgrade disk and not the full installion DVD, I already own the Snow Leopard upgrade disk so now I have two copies and I can't use them to downgrade.
    All I get when I insert the DVD is a message saying "you can't use this version of the application Install Mac Os X with this version of Mac OS X"...
    Could someone please tell me exactly what Snow Leopard disks/ DVD I need to purchase (and where) for me to install Snow Leopard on my iMac. I have seen lots of different "versions" on eBay & Amazon with vastly differing prices but how do I know which disks I need to buy as I don't want to end up purchasing a third "Upgrade only" versionof Snow Leopard.

    I've already tried all of those methods using the 10.6.3 disks I bought, they simply don't work as I posted earlier.
    All that happens is the machine constantly bleeps 3 times in a row and the DVD drive stops spinning. I know booting from a DVD install disk is a slow process but no matter how long I leave it nothing happens except for the 3 bleeping sounds.
    Having scoured the net and spoken to Apple themselves all information tells me these 10.6.3 disks are actually for someone upgrading from Leopard to Snow Leopard.
    I have no idea why Apple sold me this version as before I ordered it I explained fully to the sales person what I was wanting to do and they had all the details of this mid 2011 iMac I have bought. So unless the sales person didn't have a clue what they were talking about then I should be able to "downgrade" to Snow Leopard on this iMac as even the specs for this model clearly state on everymac.com that it originaly shipped with OS 10.6.6 (Snow Leapard)

    So there must be somewhere I can purchase these 10.6.6 install disks to "downgrade". Trouble is on Ebay or Amazon where you can buy Snow Leopard most of them are 10.6.3 or "retail" versions with no actual version numbers to let me know I'm buying the correct disk.
    Who would have thought setting up your computer could be a mission impossible task and why Apple don't help is simply a disgrace to be honest.

I would like to be able to downgrade to Snow Leopard using the discs that came with my computer. This is mainly so that I can use the Bootcamp version which supports Windows XP. I was wondering if I can downgrade without losing any of my data, and if I will lose certain apps, settings, etc. currently on my Mac. I DO NOT own an external hard drive or any backups(I know I should, but I never got around to it). So what will happen if I try to downgrade, and is it possible?

    Hi, I'm in the same trouble as lots of others after upgrading to Liion. I have one Buffalo Terastation Life (works obviously fine 'til now) and two Raidsonic ICY-Box IB-4210-B I can see the shared folders but didn't manage to get access to them.

  • Help Downgrade to Snow Leopard due to Constant Freezing from YouTube and Update Failures?

    I love the new OSX Lion, however due to youtube being my most visited site, the widespread issue between new iMacs with Lion and Flash Player is bad enough that I would like to return to Snow Leopard. My computer has already frozen and needed to be restarted upwards of 15 times. If I no longer posses the Snow Leopard install disc (never thought I'd need it since I upgraded), is there any way for me to revert to Snow Leopard? I just can't stand the freezing, as well as how long it takes to restart following said crashes, it has rendered my mac nearly unusable. Also, when I run the Software update application, updates keep finishing downloading and then telling me that the download "Can not be saved" which forced me to move my music library to Spotify. Although after 3 days the iTunes update did finish however i did not want to go back to iTunes for fear of future problems. Help?

    I've already tried all of those methods using the 10.6.3 disks I bought, they simply don't work as I posted earlier.
    All that happens is the machine constantly bleeps 3 times in a row and the DVD drive stops spinning. I know booting from a DVD install disk is a slow process but no matter how long I leave it nothing happens except for the 3 bleeping sounds.
    Having scoured the net and spoken to Apple themselves all information tells me these 10.6.3 disks are actually for someone upgrading from Leopard to Snow Leopard.
    I have no idea why Apple sold me this version as before I ordered it I explained fully to the sales person what I was wanting to do and they had all the details of this mid 2011 iMac I have bought. So unless the sales person didn't have a clue what they were talking about then I should be able to "downgrade" to Snow Leopard on this iMac as even the specs for this model clearly state on everymac.com that it originaly shipped with OS 10.6.6 (Snow Leapard)

    So there must be somewhere I can purchase these 10.6.6 install disks to "downgrade". Trouble is on Ebay or Amazon where you can buy Snow Leopard most of them are 10.6.3 or "retail" versions with no actual version numbers to let me know I'm buying the correct disk.
    Who would have thought setting up your computer could be a mission impossible task and why Apple don't help is simply a disgrace to be honest.
