Downloaded text files open in TextEdit. I need them to open in Word.

Hello,
I have to download some word documents from an online class and the way it's set up in the class is that i just click on the link and it automatically downloads it to Text Edit and doesn't let me choose which program to save it to. Is there somewhere I can change the settings on my Mac so that it either uses Word as the default program automatically or lets me choose the program.
Thanks.

the reason I need it to save to Word, is because it seems to change the table settings in the template when it saves it in text edit, which i don't want.

    Hi,
    If we want to upload file data from the application server to the internal table, there is no function module or class static method which we can use, we must wirte the code by ourselves.
    1. For the file data which has no seperator between field columns.
    PARAMETERS p_file  TYPE dxfile-filename.
    START-OF-SELECTION.
    OPEN DATASET p_file IN TEXT MODE ENCODING DEFAULT FOR INPUT.
      DO.
        READ DATASET p_file INTO gds_data.
        IF sy-subrc <> 0.
          EXIT.
        ENDIF.
        APPEND gds_data TO gdt_data.
      ENDDO.
    CLOSE DATASET p_file.2. For the file data which has tab separator between field columns.
    DATA: gds_field_split type gts_data.
    FIELD-SYMBOLS: <fs_field> TYPE gts_data.
    PARAMETERS p_file  TYPE dxfile-filename.

  • Launching Microsoft Access from Internet Explorer to view a downloaded MDB file opens the wrong file (not a problem if I use Firefox)

    When clicking on a link (in Internet Explorer 9) to download an Access MDB file and then choosing to open the file directly in Microsoft Access (2007) instead of saving it, the file is copied to Temporary Internet Files but Microsoft Access tries to open
    a different file and displays an (Unrecognized database format) error.
    When I click on the option to open the file, the MDB file is copied to Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5 but instead of that file, Access tries to open a different (incorrect) file located in Temporary Internet Files\Content.MSO (e.g. in the above error
    message, NativeView.do is an XML file containing an error message).
    I don't see this problem with Word, Excel or PowerPoint files. When opening a Word file (without saving) the Word file is copied to Content.IE5 but an identical .tmp file is created in Content.MSO which when opened in Microsoft Word displayed the required file
    correctly. The same happens for Excel files. PowerPoint appears to be handled a little differently (no .tmp file created in Content.MSO but the required file is still copied to Content.IE5) but the PPT file is still opened correctly in Microsoft PowerPoint.
    I think the Content-Type "application/msaccess" is fine because Internet Explorer does launch Microsoft Access. It just tries to open the wrong file (or so I think). However, it looks like the file type is not being determined. Here is what I noticed
    when trying to open different Microsoft Office files using Internet Explorer:
    The last one is the MDB file. As you can see, only for this type of file, the "Type" (Microsoft Office Access 2007?) is not displayed in this Open/Save dialog box.
    On Firefox, I don't see this problem. When I tried clicking on the link to the MDB file in Firefox, Microsoft Access was launched and the file was opened correctly. Is there something I can do so the MDB file is opened properly using IE? I can add/change headers
    in the HTTP response that writes this file to the output stream (on disk) if that helps.
    Thanks for your time!

    Sounds like a problem symptom to be discussed in either an IE forum or an Access forum, not here.  How did you come to post here?  ForumsRedesign.  That might be an on-topic issue for this forum.  <eg>
    Can you find your way to either of those other forums easily from here?  Another on-topic question for here I think.   ; )

  • Downloadable .tiff files open in quicktime, not as an image file: using mac

    I am using a Mac 10.6.3 and
    Ffirefox ver: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10.6; en-US; rv:1.9.2) Gecko/20100115 Firefox/3.6
    downloadable .tiff files open in firefox quicktime, not as image files, nor do they let me choose how to download or where to save or as what type of file.

    Hello andrea,
    You can tell Firefox to ask you where to store your download files by changing the Firefox "Preferences". You can get the instructions on how to do it in this article: [[Downloads window]].
    I would advise you to download tiff files as tiff files only otherwise they may become unviewable.
    Now, to open your tiff files as images, you can change the settings on your Mac computer as follows:
    #Select the tiff image that you downloaded.
    #Right click on it and select "Get info"
    #A windows will pop up. In this window, select the "Open with" item. Under this item, select "Preview" or any other image viewer application that you want to use.
    #Next, click on the "Change All.." button. Click "Continue" in the message that is shown.
    That's all. Now, your tiff files will open as images in the application that you just selected
    Hope this solves your problem !

  • Text File opened in Wordpad cannot be parsed on OBPM 10GR3

    Hi all,
    Text File opened in Wordpad cannot be parsed on OBPM 10GR3
    Why is that?
    I use the following code to parse a file:-
    textFile = TextFile();
    textFile.open(name : "C:\testFile.txt");
    logMessage("---Does file exist?--> " + textFile.exists);
    foreach (line in textFile.lines) {
    logMessage("-- The LINE is-->" + line);
    pinBlockProcessing.linesCount = pinBlockProcessing.linesCount + 1;
    pinBlockProcessing.deviceIdentifierArray[] = line;
    textFile.close();

    Hi all,
    I also used other two methods to parse such a file which can be opened in Wordpad but not in Notepad.
    1) I used Java.Util.Scanner
    2) I also created and compiled a program/package/class which gets a file and parses it using Java.Util.Scanner using Java in Eclipse.
    I created a JAR out of it and tried to use this JAR in my process by introspecting it and then passing the file to be parsed to the methods in this JAR file.
    But this did not work either. Although the program does work in plain Java in Eclipse. It compiles and parses a a file which can be opened in Wordpad but not in Notepad.
    My program for both these methods was :-
    import java.io.FileReader;
    import java.io.FileWriter;
    import java.io.IOException;
    import java.util.Scanner;
    public class Test{
    public static void main(String args[]) throws IOException {
    FileReader fin = new FileReader("./testFile.txt");
    Scanner src = new Scanner(fin);
    src.useDelimiter("\n");
    while (src.hasNext()) {
    System.out.println(src.next());
    fin.close();
    This does not work either.
    All programs and methods work when a text file can be opened in NotePad.
    What could be possible solution in OBPM 10GR3?
    It is something to do with Carriage Return and generating a file in UNIX which when opened in Notepad shows one straight horizontal line and when opened in Wordpad shows vertical lines.

    Hi,
    Wordpad can't open pdf files properly, you need pdf reader and the most popular is Adobe reader. Please download from the following link and install to your computer:
        http://get.adobe.com/reader/
    (Please don't tick add-in).
    Windows 8.1 actually comes with a reader but it's not good enough.

  • When downloading a file, "open" option does not appears, only "save" does

    Before updating to 5.0, when downloading a file, I could select between "Open" and "save". Now I don't have the "Open" option. I need it because of my work and is a must have or it will take to much time to save and then opening them. In normal morning with "open" option took me like 30 minutes. Now it took me 1.5 hours and can't afford to loose that much time.

    Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
    *Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.
    *https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Safe+Mode
    A possible cause is that the server sends a wrong response header.
    The server may not comply to RFC 5987 and sends a wrong Content-Disposition:attachment; filename header.

  • Downloading Text file over http

    Hi,
    I am trying to display some plain text files over http to the client using a web browser. Everything works fine till the time the file size is small, but for the files of over 1MB the frontend just dies. Probably the display happens only after the complete transfer of the file.
    Does any one have the solution by which the text files can also be downloaded similar to the html files i.e. incrementaly. I have the code of transferring the html file over http as it happens in the explorer. But the same does not seem to work on the plain text files.
    Please help
    Sachin

    I do not have any Remote server written for this. What i am doing is, the directory in which the files are stored is exposed as a virtual directory through a web server(Apache) and then from client i am just placing a http request to open this file.
    So what i can do under this situations to handle the large files.

  • Browser can't find a text file opened via the save as dialogue box

    Hi there,
    I have a servlet which outputs a file using the servlet output stream, with the following lines set:
    response.setContentType("application/msword");
    response.setHeader("Content-Disposition", "attachement; filename="+ fileName);
    servletOutStream.write(myBytes);
    servletOutStream.flush();
    It works fine for .doc files and it seems the mechanism is that it is saved to the Temporary Internet Folder and delivered from there when the user clicks on the 'open' or 'save' option in the browser popup dialogue box. However... when I try this with text files, (setting the content type to "text/plain") I get the open/save dialogue box up correctly but if I try to open the file it says it cannot find the file, and gives the path under the Temporary Interenet Folder. If I look in there the text file isn't present - though the .doc files are.
    So... it looks as if the problem is that for some reason it doesn't save the text files correctly to the Temporary Internet Folder.
    I can't deliver the text files inline as a solution as the filename is lost and it thinks it's an html file (which the client doesn't want).
    Any ideas?
    Alison

    At least also set the content length. Your browser may be configured be the default application to open textfiles. If the contentlength is not set, then most applications would refuse to open the file without choosing for 'Save' first and manually open it.

  • Downloading text file to ftp location

    Hi Everyone,
    Could you please guide me for the following query:
    I am trying to send the output of a sap program in a text file to ftp location. In that, while passing the following parameter the program is allowing me to download the file to ftp location:
    CALL FUNCTION 'FTP_CONNECT'
           EXPORTING
             user            = userid
             password        = password
             host            = 'IPADDRESS'
             rfc_destination = 'SAPFTP'
           IMPORTING
             handle          = mi_handle
           EXCEPTIONS
             not_connected   = 1
             OTHERS          = 2.
    Through this way i am able to download the file to ftp location(as per ipaddress).
    But when trying to download the file in a folder on the same ftp location it is not doing that.
    The parameters, which i am passing are described below:
    CALL FUNCTION 'FTP_CONNECT'
           EXPORTING
             user            = userid
             password        = password
             host            = 'IPADDRESS/Folder_Name'
             rfc_destination = 'SAPFTP'
           IMPORTING
             handle          = mi_handle
           EXCEPTIONS
             not_connected   = 1
             OTHERS          = 2.
    Please guide.
    Thanks and Regards

    Hi,
    While using CONNECT, we do not have to give the folder. It should only be the server / ip address.
    While using FTP_COPY, we can give the folder name in parameter FILE_DESTINATION.
    regards,
    amit m.

  • Quick Question : Upload/Download text files

    Hi,
    can I use interMedia to upload text files on the Database. I don't need to query them for size or
    whatever metadata but I'd like to retrieve them without any harm done :-)
    I don't expect any problems but would still like to confirm.
    Thanks,
    Steve

    Which interMedia object are you using to store the content?
    No we don't do anyting to the content. You won't be able to use it easily within the database. You won't have any character set support. You will need to specify the mimetype yourself.
    But it should work for raw storage and retrieval.
