Draw a smooth shape out of point array where points are in arbitrary order

hi folks,
I got a little problem I just can't get figured out:
- there's an array of points (x,y)
- the points inside this array are arbitrary
- now I need to find out which points define the outermost shape
- all other points that are inside this outermost shape may not be used
- and finally the shape should be smooth...
a picture of what I mean is to see here:
http://www.student-zw.fh-kl.de/~chgr0001/tmp/shape.htm
I wonder if there's a method in Java2D to do this?!
thanks for your help!

well,
it's about a class that draws an area based on coordinates out of a database.
These coordinates are originally from a GPS device and hold information about public WLANs. If someone walked around with his GPS and found WLAN data, this data together with the according GPS coordinates is stored in certain fractions of time.
Now my problem is that I want to present the areas, where you can get a WLAN link, on a map. To do so, I want to draw the outermost shape of a "walkaround with my GPS" session and colorize it with the average link quality.
Furthermore I like to have that shape smooth.
I would appreciate any hints on how to proceed and which methods of which classes are useful to do so.

  • Using pen tool to draw a particular shape...

    Hi all,
I'm pretty new to Illustrator and just wanted some advice.
I'm using the pen tool to try and draw a specific shape () but finding it hard trying to 'smooth' out the points where I connect my lines.
The pen tool can't draw this all in one go, so when I try to do it in several stages, the lines don't connect up smoothly so it looks a bit... rubbish.
Anyone got any tips or how to do this simply? Sorry if this is a total idiotic question but, I'm trying...!
    Cheers

    Somehow your picture won't show.

  • Trying to draw a diamond shape from a shape - Please help !!!

    Hi,
I am trying to draw a diamond shape from a custom shapes library but having a hard time getting it to shape accurately, the shape I am trying to draw should look like this :
If someone can teach me some photoshop techniques as to how to get all the angles reshaped accurately using some photoshop tools that will be great or if you can do it in my project file that will help too, the project psd file can be downloaded from here : http://tonyalepski.heliohost.org/Diamond.psd
Your help would be really really appreciated.
    Thank you very much !!
    Tonya.

Your diamond looked like it was square to me. So I centered your diamond over your canvas add a vertical  guide at 50%. Measured your square to be 190 PX  Dragged out a 190 PX square shape no fill 1 px red stroke.  Transformed the shape rotating it 45 degrees and moved it up to align with your diamond.   Dragged out a horizontal guide to match your diamond cut. Used the Pen tool to add two control points the square shape. and then use the pen tool to delete the top control point then convert control point tool to convert the two added control points.

  • AE CS5 - Shape Layer - Anchor point moves after position keyframe

I am experiencing unintuitive (to me) behaviour with a brand new shape layer. Here are the steps to reproduce the issue. I have made a screen cap of the problem but can't figure out how to upload it to this forum.
    1. In an existing composition, I create a new Shape Layer
    2. By default the anchor point (center point) is in the dead center of the shape layer. Perfect.
    3. I turn on Position keyframing, and add a position keyframe at my current time
    4. Instantly the anchor point now jumps to the center of the composition, and so now when I scale my shape layer it doesn't scale properly
If I try to use the Pan Behind tool, I get position keyframing. Besides, I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO DO THIS, since the anchor point was in the correct spot to start with, and it's only because of this keyframing "bug" that the anchor point jumps.
What am I missing or doing wrong? How can I add a position keyframe to a BRAND NEW LAYER that has no other animation on it, and still keep the anchor point in the dead center of my shape?
    Thanks for your advice,
    Tom

Thanks to Rick and Mylenium for your helpful answers. Rick, I'd prefer not to have to manually reposition, because I'm never going to be as mathematically precise as the software for positioning the Anchor Point dead center.
Using the transform controls on the shape rather than the global container certainly did the trick! You guys are great. Thanks.
    [rant]
In my defense as far as the constant exhortations to "RTFM", we all know that most veteran software users only go to the manual when there's a problem. You also know that Adobe's help system (particluarly in regards to search) has gotten worse over the years, not better. So when I run into a situation like this, I'm going to search through the help for what I believe the problem is: namely "anchor points", "transformations" and "keyframes", and maybe "shape layers". This is a fair amount of research, and it's exactly what I do as my first line of defense.
The second line of defense that most tech savvy folk do, is a Google search; for example: "anchor point moves after position keyframe" or "After Effects shapes layer anchor point moves keyframe" etc. And you spend your time sifting through forums trying to find the relevant answers. I feel that THAT is my true due diligence, rather than reading the F'n Adobe manual that is so very very sparse.
So after my due diligence, I turn to the experts communities, because there I know I will get educated, reliable help within a reasonable turnaround time. And because I myself contribute to these same forums in areas where I have higher than average expertise. The Adobe Forums have proven to be one of the great online resources.
Finally, now that I have a great answer from two knowledgeable experts (thanks again!), I've also enriched the community, because of the way I have crafted my post title, hopefully the next poor ******* who has a similar problem and a similar methodology to finding resolution will stubmle upon my post because I've tried to overload the title with relevant keywords that will generate hits in google.
Through my question, and your accurate answers, the global knowledgebase has improved.
So forgive me for not memorizing the F'n Adobe online help. I go to the resources that are the most useful, expedient, and provide the greatest value as a whole.

    Peace,
    Tom

  • How do I cut a circle shape out of a block of text in  Illustrator?

I don't like the effect area type tool gives so I want to do it manually i.e. have a box filled with my text then put a circle over it and cut everything except what's in the circle. I don't want a mask though, I want it permanently cropped.

Yes to end up with partials. I'm wanting to making the word "worlds" into a circle, that is an eillipse filled with instances of "worlds" text in it with no outline in the ellipse. It doesn't matter that parts of characters will be lost.
Similarly, I want to do the opposite, have a page filled with text and cut a shape out so the emphasis is on the cut shape (in this instance it's a palm tree shape) again it matters not that parts of some of the characters in the text will be cut.

Yes.  First click on this icon:

These instructions are for Windows system so you need to adapt the method for Macs.  I can't afford to by an Apple Mac!!!!!

    Hey everyone.
I have a question. I need to draw an arrow. The only thing that I have are two points with certain coordinates. It would not be so hard if I did not have to worry about the angle but what if the line is not horizontal? How do I draw it? Thanks!

  • How to clip shapes out of outlines

Hey guys, so, I have a stroke of a circle, and I want to clip a shape out of the edge:
When I use the parallelogram as the mask, I get this:
When in fact, I want the inversion of that:
I mimicked that by just making the parallelogram white, but how would I do that using clipping masks?

    theorange,
To do it with a Clipping Mask, you will have to do it in reverse; you may:
    1) Create an object at least as large as the object to be clipped (a large rectangle will do);
    2) Select the large object from 1) and the shape you showed in the OP image, then Object>Compound Path>Make;
    3) Use 2) as the Clipping Path for the Clipping Mask.
The Opacity Mask is somewhat easier for a case like this.
This is because the Clipping Mask can only show what is masked, whereas the Opacity Mask can both hide and show, and even make transitions in between the two.

  • Visio Cisco Equipment Shapes out of Proportion and others Missing

    Hello Everyone,
Have any of you noticed that the shapes of line cards and port cards are out of proportion with the chassis Visio shape in which you place them.  The ones below leave gaps not representative of the actual physical equipment.  Also, it seems not all the shapes are included with the VSS files.
    WS-X45-Sup6-E Supervisor Engine 6-E
    WS-X4548-GB-RJ45
    WS-X4648-RJ45V+E
    WS-X4306-GB
The attached image provides and excellent example of the issue with the current Cisco Visio Shapes.
    Thanks,
    C. Z.

    Hi CZ,
You are correct that some of the line cards on that stencil do not fit properly into the chassis.  Those icons/shapes were produced by the previous vendor prior to 2009 when we took this over. The shapes produced by my group do fit correctly, for example the WS-X4748-RJ45-E. The product group did not authorize us to go back to retrofit the older shapes and that's why they do not fit as expected.
Regarding missing shapes, we produce what the product group orders from us but I can often ask them to fund additional shapes when there is a forum request. Please understand that they will not accept requests for end of life products.

  • Slowing down clip has a strobing effect(choppy)? How can I smooth it out?

    Hi guys,
When I slow down the clip, it plays back choppy or with a strobing effect.
How can I smooth it out in FCP5?
    Anyone please,
    Many thanks in advance,
    Zia

    Zia,
I would double check that the 'frame blending' option is selected. Otherwise, is the original footage interlaced or progressive? If you shot progressive and only have 29.97 frames (or less) to work with, you might want to try a plug-in. If the frames do not exist, it will probably be difficult to get a really smooth look.
Should you have shot at 30i (aka 60i), you can do some high tech stuff with a playback deck and your original tape- set the deck to progressive and the 60 fields will be tranformed into 60 frames (per second), hence giving a slow motion feel that rivals that of film. (this depends on your original media and what deck you can get your hands on)
I just did this for a music video and even the best DPs that I know thought it was film.

    1. The Shapes menu is on the toolbar.
Pull down the menu and choose the pentagon shape. That has a sliding controller that lets you choose the number of sides.
