Dreamweaver templates dwt - no css in browser
Should dwt's display css correctly when previewed in a browser?
Mine doesn't but the file created from the template displays fine
I've just gone back to using dw templates after many years away and I can't remember.

Dreamweaver template (.dwt) keeps reverting to old version after reopening CS3
I work locally on all files and upload as needed. After chaging template and applying it, I can upload all associated pages just fine. If I close DW and reopen, the old version of the template is there without any changes -- even though I saved the template.
Also, updating the template will change all other web pages except index.html.
Any ideas?
ThanksSure. No nested templates to my knowledge -- especially since I only have one template. Look like I have some regions in my index.html that don't match the .dwt -- even though the .dwt was created from the .html. When I tried to update the .html, it really screws up the content. Let's kill the 1st bird first -- why my ,dwt file keeps reverting to an old version. Here is the code for the template. Again, thank you!

NEW! Free Dreamweaver templates WITH Fireworks vector files
I just released some free Dreamweaver templates that include
not only the Dreamweaver template dwt file, but also the original
pre-sliced Fireworks file with all the template graphics.
The templates include the dwt, Fireworks file, pure CSS
menus, are AdSense-ready, XHTML 1.0 valid and are very customizable
through both the Fireworks file and the CSS.
If you use one, let me know so I can get a screenshot and
post a link to your site showing how the templates have been
customized by various designers.
Cheers!
BroditCan you post a link to the PHP page, please? This will allow
me to see the
HTML markup on it....

Hello,
I have been tasked with updating the navigation on a site that is using a Dreamweaver template (DWT) as the base file. The navigation was originally built using jQuery navigation UI, however this did not address all of our needs and I have updated it with another version of an accordion.
The .dwt file only is only controlling the navigation and the head of the site.
I have integrated the new xhtml structure and added/removed javascript/jquery into the .dwt file. I saved the file, therefore updating all of the relevant .html files, and verified that the accordion works.
However - the accordion does not work for all of the xhtml files. Some files, seemingly at random, are not pulling in the javascript.
When opening the relevant .html files, I can verify that they have all been updated with the new xhtml and the correct javasctipt. However, when viewing the .html files that are not displaying correctly with FireBug, I can see that none of the jquery/javascript is being applied to the navigation (classes are missing that are injected into the xhtml, but the structure and css is correct).
I've done some research and the only issues I've been able to find are related to .xhtml files not being updated with the correct code, but in my case all of the affected files have the correct xhtml and scripts in the head.
Does anyone have any light to shed on this subject? I am quite puzzled.While I understand that looking at code is the ultimate way to find a solution, the intent of my question was not "how do i fix this" or "what is wrong with my code" but rather "does anyone have any idea as to why this would be happening". Or even, "where would you start to troubleshoot this".
I made my question general as such because I intended on trying to troubleshoot on my own in order to better understand the issue.
Thank you for stating the obvious, not all first time forum posters are completely unaware of how to ask questions properly. -
Tutorial on Dreamweaver templates?
I am fairly new to Dreamweaver (cs6), having previously designed and maintained a few sites using Freeway. I purchased a template from TemplateMonster.com in the hope that this would simplify the creation of a new site. The template came without any instructions other than how to unzip the file. Their helpline really isn't helpful at all. Can anyone recommend an online tutorial on how to use a predesigned template? Lynda.com doesn't have one. Thanks!
Commercial Templates are often very different from Dreamweaver Templates (.dwt files) which are in fact a site management tool. This often confuses people.
A Dreamweaver Template is a common structure used for creating all the pages in your site. The template has Editable Regions which you define for content that will change from page to page. Everything outside Editable Regions like your header, footer & menus will remain consistent throughout the site.
http://www.smartwebby.com/web_site_design/dreamweaver_template.asp#1
Conversely, commercial templates from houses like Monster tend to be little more than a collection of CSS, HTML, JavaScript and image files which you must extract and save to your DW Local Site Folder. Once you define your local site in DW (Site > New Site), you can open the HTML files in Code or Split View to add your own content.

Highlight "current" page in CSS Dreamweaver TEMPLATE
I have created 2 navigation bars (in my header) using an unordered list styled with CSS in a Dreamweaver Template that I created. Here is that template (in the template- the "Beads" link is styled as the current page): http://www.bfranklincrafts.com/Templates/MainTemplateM.dwt
I don't want the navbars to be editable in the pages that will be created from this template, so I was NOT planning on putting the navbars in editable regions. But now I'm realizing that if I don't put the navbars in editable regions, I won't be able to go in each link in my navbars to put the "current" style for each page.
The idea of the template is wonderful because it allows us to create one template and from that template we can make changes that would be past down to all the pages that were created using this template. But if I have to put the navbars in editable regions, it means that if I have to make changes to the navbars, I'll have to go to each individual page to make those changes.
I really want to show the "current" page that visitors are on, can anyone help!!!
LioleeHi,
sorry to bring up an old post but I am having issues with this myself and hope you can help?
I have coded my site as per your example but still no luck.
It is an .asp site. and my menu looks like this:
<ul id="nav">
<li><a id="home" href="http://www.ampso.co.uk/index.asp"><img src="/images/nav1_gray.jpg" width="84" data-srcover="/images/nav1_full.jpg"></a></li>
<li><a id="tech" href="http://www.ampso.co.uk/page/88/Technical.asp#.USOIoqWduS0"><img src="/images/nav4_gray.jpg" width="102" data-srcover="/images/nav4_full.jpg" class="wrap_right"></a></li>
<li><a id="construction" href="http://www.ampso.co.uk/page/89/Construction.asp#.USOQLqWduS0"><img src="/images/nav5_gray.jpg" width="170" data-srcover="/images/nav5_full.jpg" class="wrap_right"></a></li>
<li><a id="medical" href="http://www.ampso.co.uk/page/87/Medical.asp#.USOUeaWduS0"><img src="/images/nav3_gray.jpg" width="88" data-srcover="/images/nav3_full.jpg" class="wrap_right"></a></li>
<li><a id="media" href="http://www.ampso.co.uk/page/90/Media.asp#.USOWQKWduS0"><img src="/images/nav6_gray.jpg" width="88" data-srcover="/images/nav6_full.jpg" class="wrap_right"></a></li>
<li><a id="logistics" href="http://www.ampso.co.uk/page/91/Logistics.asp#.USOXdqWduS0"><img src="/images/nav7_gray.jpg" width="100" data-srcover="/images/nav7_full.jpg" class="wrap_right"></a></li>
<li><a id="allsectors" href="http://www.paycoservices.co.uk/page/86/All-Sectors.htm"><img src="/images/nav2_gray.jpg" width="120" data-srcover="/images/nav2_full.jpg" class="wrap_right"></li>
<li><a id="contact" href="http://www.ampso.co.uk/page/205/Welcome-to-Payco.asp#.USObtaWduS0"><img src="/images/nav9_gray.jpg" width="120" data-srcover="/images/nav9_full.jpg" class="wrap_right"></a></li>
</ul>
Now the issue arises with adding the code to the pages themselves. For example, if I go to the 'tech' page. I have no editable regions like I would with a html template (even though my main menu is in a top menu template which applies to each page) so I'm not sure exactly where to put the css code.
Currently the top section of my 'tech' page looks like this:
<%
Bodystyle = "style='background:url(/images/bg-further-technical.jpg) center 0px no-repeat;'"
%>
<!-- #INCLUDE virtual= "/top.asp" -->
<div id="further-banner" style="background:url(/images/technical-icon.png) 811px 9px no-repeat; ">
<h1>Payco Technical <span>It's your industry so why not do it your way?</span></h1>
<p><b>You are here:</b>
<a href="/index.asp">Home</a> /
<a href='Payco-Technical.asp'>Payco Technical</a> /
</p>
</div>
Now do I paste the css code into here? Or would it help if you saw my whole 'tech' page so you can see the rest?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks -
Dreamweaver template file (.dwt) updates related files but not file time stamp
I updated a bunch of dreamweaver template files, and allowed dreamweaver to update the affected files in the site.
The file were all checked out, and they were updated.
However, the timestamp of the files did not update.
Now, when I synchronise with my server, it doesn't see these files as being "new".
Any way I can get these to update the timestamp without manually finding and pushing all of them?
Using Dreamweaver CS5 V. 11.0 Build 4993This is certainly an odd symptom, and one I have not heard of before. If you just create a new 'dummy' child page from this template and leave it local (i.e., don't check it in), when you do an update does that timestamp change?

Flash banner in a Dreamweaver Template
Hi all,
I am using one of the provided Dreamweaver Templates (CSS).
All is fine, except that for some reason it does not like Flash
imports. I can alter the template as much as I like and it will
always successfully change across the site, BUT if I try to insert
a Flash movie/banner into the template - then it does not appear of
ANY of the site files. The only way I can see the flash banner, is
if I open the template.php file in a browser - then you can see
that it is in fact there and working - but for some reason the
other pages refuse to acknolwegde it. Images / Tables / Text - all
work fine - just not flash banners. I even tried saving the banner
as a JPG file in Flash, then sticking the JPG file in the template
where the banner should - and it worked perfectly, but as a .swf
extension it fails.
Am I missing something?
Nathan> BUT if I try to insert a Flash movie/banner into the
template - then it
> does not appear of ANY of the site files.
Because of the active content .js fix, when you insert a .swf
file into a
template, you must use a Site Root relative path for it.
Open the .dwt template file.
Double-click on the .swf in design view- the "browse to file"
dialog box
should come up showing the currently selected file.
look in the bottom of that dialog box for the pulldown to
change from
document relative path to site root relative path. Change it
to site root.
click okay and save the file, and let changes propagate.
does it show in the child files now?
[note- It may still not show during local preview because
site root relative
paths in javascript will not make any sense during local
preview- they
should work fine on the remote host if the site has it's own
domain name
though]

Problem on editing template .dwt file
I have a problem with dreamweaver template.
When I edit a template in dreamweaver, and apply changes to all the pages , it propogates on all pages and .dwt file also ,
but all the design or layout or graphics of the pages are gone and everything gets messed up.
Why it happens when I am editing a tamplate ?The problem is your link to CSS file. Template is incorrectly pointing to files on your local hard drive.
<link rel="stylesheet" href="file:///C|/wamp/www/mm_health_nutr.css" type="text/css" />
The link must point to your site folder like this:
<link rel="stylesheet" href="../mm_health_nutr.css" type="text/css" />
Edit template. Save & populate changes to your child pages.

I created a webpage using the dreamweaver template when I
open it in the browser in a maximize screen its perfect but when I
adjust the size the content on the middle 'div' is going to the
bottom at the page. How can I do it like if I resize the page The
contents will not be affected? Thanks!!> Of course the image in the middle
> Section which is 3 inches wide will not fit. Right?
That's correct, although inches mean nothing on the screen of
a variety of
users. Pixels would be the more consistent and proper unit of
measure.
> In regards with the css,java, html,
It's javascript, not Java. The two are completely different
things.
> why did you say it?s advanced?
The layout method used on the page is a bit arcane and unlike
other 2/3
column layouts I have seen.
> I know that it?s just to make a template command
> so that you can edit a certain section by using css
> style sheets right?
Hmmm - I don't understand what you are saying. CSS would have
nothing to do
with whether or not you can edit a section.
> But isn?t dreamweaver will make the code for you?
DW will not prevent you from making a mess of those pages,
even though It's

all of those

Look - I don't want to discourage you from using this as an

There are much better free/commercial choices you can make -

Hello!
I am working on new website we are creating for our company. I have never really had any Dreamweaver template file errors before...so this one has me really stumped! We purchased the site files from Template Monster and I have contacted their tech support, but I have not had much luck with them.
I started out by creating the Dreamweaver template folder that includes the template files that I would like to use. I started creating some pages using the template. I placed all the html pages in the main folder of the website. When I go to update the template to those pages I get the following error: "Error reading file (Site Location\Folder name\Dreamweaver template name) returned incomplete data".
I am not sure what I am doing wrong. Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated!
The site is a CSS based site with a Flash navigation menu. Since it is in the production phase, I do not yet have it placed on a server so you can take a look at it at this time (although if really needed and we cannot find an answer, I may be able to get the test site on line - if someone thinks they can help me answer this problem by viewing the site). Right now the site is housed in the same place we house all of the other sites we have produced and all of our other templates on our other websites work just fine. The main difference with this site is that we did purchase files from Template Monster to help speed us along during the construction of the page structures and also this site has a Flash Navigation Menu and a few other Flash elements (something our other sites do not really have).
I am using Abobe Dreamweaver CS5 and Windows 7
Thanks again for taking the time to help find and answer to this problem!
-JI am curious as to why no one likes them around here.
They have spammed these forums in the past.
The code on their pages is rarely 'best-practice' code.
There are much better choices available.
My co-worker and I have to share the files, since we are editing the site together. The files are not local on our computers, but on the company's f drive that have Novell on it.
This arrangement is a recipe for disaster. The correct way to collaborate on a site with a colleague is with the following setup:
Each of you must have a LOCAL site (local to your workstation)
You would use a single remote location as a staging area, so each of you would have a site definition that specifies your own workstation for the local site, and the same network shared location as the Remote site
You will both need to enable Check In/ Check Out
You will both have to agree to PLAY BY THE RULES!
One (or both) of you will also need to have a second site defined that has the staging server as the local root folder, and would have the PRODUCTION server as the remote site. I'll explain how to use this site soon.
When you use CI/CO, your 'gold-standard files' are on the staging server. To begin working, you would connect to the staging server, and double click on a file, which will a) fetch the file from the staging server to your local site, and b) CHECK OUT the file to you. As long as you have the file checked out, it cannot be edited by your colleague. When you are done with your edit, you would CHECK IN the file (which uploads it to the staging server). It can now be edited by your colleague.
When you add templates to this scenario, things get even more complicated, although manageable. If you ever need to make a change to a template you must use the following procedure:
ALL FILES MUST BE CHECKED IN - this includes both you and your colleague.
One of you would connect with the SECOND SITE, open and edit the template, and save it propagating the changes to all "LOCAL" files (i.e., on the staging server).
Each of you would then need to return to the FIRST SITE, and again check out any files you want to work on.
When changes are done, and files are ready to publish, connect to the SECOND SITE, and upload the files from STAGING to PRODUCTION.
Does that make sense? It's important that it does.
I need to add in one more tab/link to the Flash nav bar.
Using Flash for navigation is a VERY POOR CHOICE, unless you also have redundant, text-based navigation on the pages. By using Flash to navigate, you guarantee: a) your pages will not be spiderable by search engines, b) your pages will not be navigable by iPlatforms, and c) your pages will be inaccessible to anyone browsing with screen assistive devices. Someone is making bad decisions about this site, in my opinion. -
Drop-down menu in Dreamweaver; template on top of template issue
Hello.
I've managed to create a drop-down menu in a dreamweaver
template by saving the .dwt file as an .html file, building the
menu, then resaving the file as the original .dwt. However, I have
another template that is based on this original template, and while
the drop-down menu appears when I preview the second template in my
browser, it refuses to apply to the pages upon which the second
template is based.
Is there a solution to this?You are completely hosed now.
When you save a template as HTML, you leave the Template
markup in the page.
When you then resave it as a template you duplicate that
markup. You will
never be able to use this properly now. And that is
especially true with
the AWFUL DW pop-up menus in it. You just must not use these
menus with
templates. Especially since there are much better ways that
don't have any
such restrictions -

Where can I find Professional Dreamweaver Templates?
Greetings.
In efforts to browse Dreamweaver templates for sale, I am bomboarded with many sites that seem to be flogging the same templates -- which raises some suspicions to begin with. I do not mind paying for a Dreamweaver template, but I'd like to buy from a reputable source.
Could anyone suggest such a place where I might brows and buy a Dreamweaver template (or more)? It doesn't need to be exclusive, but something not found on the many that are the same sort of site would be nice.
Thank you for your kind response.
Cheers.I typically build my own templates, but these sites have some good resources:

No sound in Dreamweaver template
Hi everyone, I'm brand new to Dreamweaver so please excuse
the stupidity of what I'm about to ask. My problem is this: I have
created a few templates that's been working just fine with text and
images but now I want to embed a sound file and can't for the life
of me get the sound to play. I've tried including the sound file in
the template but to no avail and have seen mention on various sites
of unlocking the header but haven't worked out how to do this. Can
anyone throw me a line on this? I'm midway through a majorly
important project and would really appreciate any advice.http://www.spentharvests.com/templates/school_chapter.dwt
This file is not found by the browser.
Even this file -
http://www.spentharvests.com/Templates/school_chapter.dwt
(the templates folder name should always have an initial cap)
The code on the child page appears nominal. But at the
bottom, you have
this -
<div id="copyright">© 2007
spentharvests.com</div>
<embed name="CS1195492309000" src="../bethelWAV.wav"
loop="false"
autostart="false" hidden="true" width="0" height="0"
enablejavascript="true"></embed>
<embed name="CS1195506747203" src="bethelWAV.wav"
loop="false"
autostart="false" hidden="true" width="0" height="0"
enablejavascript="true"></embed>
The sound file is linked TWICE, and only the second link is
correct. So in
the template, change it to this -
<div id="copyright">© 2007
spentharvests.com</div>
<embed name="CS1195506747203" src="/School/bethelWAV.wav"
loop="false"
autostart="false" hidden="true" width="0" height="0"
enablejavascript="true"></embed>
(i.e., a root relative link directly to the sound file)
and see if that helps.

when you download an adobe template you get the Design files which is where you find the PSD files
You also get the publish folder which is where you find your images, your css, spry assets, and you also get 3 templates
Ones of those templates is design from template. html
another template design html
and then another template which is the dreamweaver dwt template
which one of those three templates is the one that I have to use.
They confuse me .A file that ends in the extension .dwt is a dreamweaver template.
You can make any .html page into a Dreamweaver template. Simply go to File>Save as Template…
Dreamweaver will create a /Templates folder where you have defined your website locally and place the template there.
Dreamweaver will not allow you to save a template without editable regions. The way you create an editable region in a dreamweaver template is to select an area in design view and select Insert>Template Objects>Editable Region. A window will come up asking you to name the region and you should give the area a good name that you'll understand.
Dreamweaver will insert code necessary to manage the template.
Dreamweaver will allow you to nest templates. Don't do that.
Dreamweaver templates allow you to create areas that are updated automatically on your website (like navigation, for instance) all throughout your website whenever you make a change to your template. The only other way to do this is to use server side includes. Dreamweaver templates make website creation, extension and management a snap.
So, when you design a page for a website, make that page into a template, define the areas you want to be able to change on every page as editable regions and let Dreamweaver do the heavy lifting whenever you need to change something site-wide.
