Drive not mounting on 2 of my Macs

Not sure what caused my problems, but this is when it started. Last week I updated to iPhone 3Gs from 3G. The Calendar app did not install on my new iPhone...strange. I reran the sync through iTunes and it appeared. Then I started having probs with my G5, so I checked console and logs for info. It listed calendar in many areas. Then my second drive (My BACKUP!) did not mount. Still need to start troubleshooting. Next my kids MacBook was having probs, so I decided to update software. It froze while trying to update to 10.5.8 and got the Kernel Panic screen and would not startup. I tried repairing permissions and such using the DVD in Disk Utility. It failed, so I decided to reformat and reinstall...except it does not mount the drive. Now my PBG4 is acting up and I am scared to run any tests. Two drives failing all within a couple of days.
Coincidence? Time for some research. Feel like I am a Microsoft owner again!

If you buy it from the Mac App Store, it will show up in the "Purchases" tab on the Mac App Store. You can download it for free from all of your other Macs by going to the "Purchases" tab on the Mac App Store after you have bought it.
I hope I answered your question.

  • USB Drive not mounting on Mac Pro, mounts on other Macs?

    Hello.
I have a USB drive that mounts on just about every Mac (just about because I haven't tried on them all) in our studio. Intel & PPC, 10.5.6 and 10.4.11. But, when I try and mount it on my Mac Pro, it won't mount. The only difference (other than it being a Mac Pro) is that it's running 10.5.7 — though, I have an iMac at home running 10.5.7 and it mounts there no problem as well?
I've confirmed the USB ports working (all of them), but for some reason, this drive doesn't mount (can't see it in Disk Utility or other 3rd party drive utilities)?
    Anyone have any suggestions?
    Regards,
    Kristin.

Yea, I've already tried both of those things and neither have worked.
So weird. I've read a lot of reports on these boards about 10.5.7 and USB not playing well together, but the fat that I've been able to get it to mount on a 10.5.7 machine...?

  • 10.4.7 & FireWire drives not mounting

    Hi everyone,
since this morning my trusted LaCie FW HDs won't mount, are not seen in System Profiler and Disk Utility.
I tried almost every thing I could find, resetting vram, pram, powering everything down, waiting, disconnecting all the cables, powering back up, connecting one after another, etc. - no changes.
Every application runs fine. Except, of course, Logic because I have all my sounds and song projects on these drives.
My system.log continues to say every second again:
...-Computer kernel[0]: AppleFWOHCI_AsyncTransmit::waitForDMA - context not going inactive.
    The console.log repeats:
-Computer root[175]: [MAFL] attempt to make FSSpec for "121-210.cypress" failed -120\n
-Computer root[175]: [MAFL] attempt to make FSSpec for "210.cypress" failed -120\n
-Computer root[175]: [MAFL] found no firmware to load for 210\n
Does anybody know what these logs mean?
Is anybody else having this problem with 10.4.7?
I started a similar thread on A-S-D- Installation and Setup, only to find out, that a lot of people there are experiencing the same issue (FW drives not mounting, not showing).
    Would resetting the PMU help?
    Please help, I can't work

Back from the mysterious world of HDs, so easy to solve..., sometimes...
I tried the HDs on my friends older PB and all was fine.
Resetting my computers PMU did not solve the problem, after I tried everything else.
    I refrained from reinstalling 10.4.7.
All other applications (but Logic, because I could not access my files) were running smooth.
Going back to 10 a.m. yesterday, basically starting over, there was one thing I missed checking (being human): the AC to DC converters supplied by LaCie for their drives.
See, they are under my desk, like out of sight...
Voilá! Individual testing revealed, that the AC/DC converter for the first LaCie drive in my chain did not spin up any of my other six LaCie drives, which I never run all at the same time, but they still have their own power supply.
Changed power supply on the first HD and now I am back to the fast speed and glitch free system I love. Back to enjoying work as well
What a day. And I am very sorry, that I was implying to blame 10.4.7 for this. My PB has never been faster

  • SOLUTION - USB 3.0 External Drives Not Mounting on MBP Retinas - SOLUTION

So I have been having the same problem as everyone else who has issues with USB 3 external hard drives not mounting on their MBP Retinas. My friend told me to try unplugging the USB cord and plugging it back in instantly (like in half a second, so as to not let the power turn off on the drive).  I had my doubts but then I tried it just now, and MY DRIVE MOUNTED.
GO TRY IT AND SEE IF IT WORKS FOR YOU!
UPDATE: I am using a powered external drive (Seagate Backup Pro 3TB).  Not sure if this will work with bus powered drives, but I think it might, as my friend might have been using a bus powered drive.
Also, I just bought two Hitachi TOURO 750GB bus powered portable drives (7200rpm/USB 3.0) and they mounted perfectly without problem as soon as I plugged it in for the first time.

Did you unplug the USB cable from the computer or from the external drive? This fix has been posted here previously but it was reported that the cable had to be unplugged from the device, not the computer. If the cable was unplugged from the computer instead, the fix didn't work.

  • External hard drive NOT mounting to mac

I have never had problems with my external hard drive (I just bought it a few months ago), but suddenly it is not mounting on the iMacs at my work or my Macbook pro at home.  The drive does NOT show up in Disc Utility, but when the drive is connected via USB, the light on the drive comes on and it is clearly operating.  It will not mount on any mac product all of a sudden.  I have no idea why this is happening someone PLEASE HELP thanks

you have a MacBook Pro, we are Mac Pro users.
It uses bus-power? has its own power brick?
Formatted for Mac (HFS)? Used on PC Windows and Mac?
Do you have it backed up?
Has there been an inadvertent outage or crash?

  • Lacie firewire 800 external hard drive not mounting in mac os 10.4.8

I have a pm g5 Dual 2ghz system ,i have connected an firewire 800 lacie 1tb external hard drive to the system, now the problem is it is not mounting on the desktop shows in the diskutility repaired the disk say's disk volume ok any way to mount the external hd on the desktop

Hi Veena, Welcome to Apple Discussions.
And you've tried choosing the volume and pressing the "Mount " icon on the tool bar of Disk Utility?
Have you shut down your Mac and disconnected your firewire cable from both ends and let it sit about ten minutes then reconnect and try. Also, it is important to disconnect the AC power to your Mac, this helps to reset the FireWire port(s).
Do you have TTP or DW, both of which you could use to try to mount it.
It is also possible that you have a bad cable or a bad port, do other FW devices work?

  • Internal boot drive not mounted -- Mac does not restart

    Hi everyone,
    I've got a problem with my  2013 MacBookPro 13" with OS X 10.10 Yosemite.
It seems that somethings wrong with my internal boot drive. I wanted to start my Mac but the grey progress line stopped at about the half and didn't continue. I tried to boot in secured mode --> not possible. I loaded recovery mode and wanted to check and repair disk utilities but I cannot hit those buttons because my drive is not mounted and cannot be mounted. I also tried to connect my Mac via Firewire with another Mac in Target Disk Mode --> Drive could not be mounted. Finally I tried to mount my drive on a Windows and Linux computer --> not mounted :-(
Is there another possibility to mount my drive or to access my data somehow? The thing is that I do not have a backup and that is why I need to access my data and store them somewhere prior being able to do a clean reinstall of my Mac.
    Thank you for your support.
    Markus

Boot into the Recovery volume (boot with the Command + R keys held down), select Disk Utility and try to repair the disk and disk permissions. If you're able to reboot normally and see that works.
If not reboot into the Recovery volume and reinstall the system.
If you can't boot into the Recovery volume mamau08 may be right in that the drive has failed.

  • Hard Drive Not Mounting NTFS Tried MacFuse and NTFS-3G

    Issue:
    Mac OS X Tiger
    - External HD NTFS Formatted (Win XP)
    - Does not mount, but shows in Disk Utility (running on USB2.0)
    Ran Disk Utility's Verify Disk:
    Invalid B-tree node size
The volume needs to be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1HFS volume checked
    Volume needs repair
    Repair Disk:
    same errors above
but under HFS volume check shows 1 volume could not be repaired because of an error
I've tried installing Macfuse and NTFS-3G and FinkCommander. I've tried running terminal commands offered on various sites.
    I don't have Bootcamp.
I believe this hard drive was connected to my pc (win xp) when it may have crashed on me. I think its a recovery issue because I run a 4 bay usb hd box that probably wasnt plugged in when this happened, and those hard drives can be seen my this mac. The crashed computer's hard drive and this external hard drive are the only ones not being read. Can somebody help me? Thanks.
PS- I ran a demo of Boomerang and showed all my files on this external hard drive. It was all under the Regular tab, not the Lost tab.
I have techtool pro as well. I just got it yesterday, and I'm not sure if it's supposed to fix this stuff.
Do I need one of the recovery programs out there like Diskwarrior, DataRescue, Boomerang, etc etc?

Is it possible that your hard drive is full enough that there was not enough space on it to complete the reinstall of OS X 10.4?
You may have partial installs of the OS on the hard drive which have totally filled the drive. This is not a certainty, just a possibility, but it could explain why there is no error report on the drive.
Do you have access to another Mac with FireWire? If so, you can try to use FireWire Target Disk Mode with your iBook as the Target Disk to see if you can retrieve your data to the other Mac's hard drive.
Instructions on recovering from the flashing question mark folder can be found in this Apple Knowledge Base article:

  • Hard Drives Not Mounting - Help!

    Hello,
This is my first post, so please forgive me if I leave anything out....
I recently had to replace my hard drive. Got it all going, then I noticed when I went to put a music CD in, that it would not show up. I tried others with no luck....then I put in a cd with data, and it showed up on the desktop....
While trying to mess around, I made my 2 LaCie external hard drives go away! I have tried checking cables, and they come on when the computer does, they don't show up in system profiler....
Please let me know what information you might need to help me diagnose these problems....my computer has been so good to me, I want it back up and running...
    Powerbook G4 Ti 667 MHz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   512 Ram

Hi, mcholley, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
I can't suggest any remedy for your optical drive not reading audio CDs but having no trouble with data CDs, except to say it's apparently a software problem, not hardware-based.
After replacing your hard drive, did you reinstall your operating system from scratch on it, or did you restore your OS from a backup you had made?
The disappearance of your external drives (are they USB or FireWire?) may be power-related. Are they externally powered, or are you powering them from the USB or FireWire bus? If they're bus-powered, are you connecting both of them at once? That won't work: together they demand more power from the bus than it can supply, and while they may spin, they won't mount. Connect only one of them at a time. Is either of them detected by Apple System Profiler when just one is connected to the Powerbook? Does it mount on the desktop then?
If you've been able to connect both drives to the Powerbook at the same time in the past, and both have mounted OK, then there's been some hardware change recently, other than your hard drive replacement, that has caused the loss of external drive detection. Is it possible that during your recent operations you've turned off one or both of the external drives, or disconnected it/them from the Powerbook, without dismounting it from the desktop first? Depending on what, if anything, the drive was doing at the time, that can make a FireWire drive unmountable and all the data on it inaccessible. In that case it may be necessary to erase and reformat the drive. I don't know whether the same is true of USB drives.
Do you have another Mac to which you can connect the drives, to see whether they show up on it? If they do, you might have to consider the possibility that the port(s) to which you've been connecting them on your Powerbook is bad.

  • Hard drives not mounting on xserve

I have had this dilemna for quite some time on one computer, then yesterday I went to work on another computer with a different operating system and it had the same sympton.
Both of these computers after running for a time will not show that the hard drives mounted.
One of the computers is running Leopard on a 20"iMac with 2 GB of RAM. The other computer is an xserve running xserver software Tiger 10.4.11.
If I restart the computers, then the drives will mount. I can restart the computers if I have access through ARD, if not then I have to hard crash the computers. When running programs on these computers, File--> quit is not an option for any open software packages.
On the xserve, I have used permissions repair and this did not help.
Very puzzling and not sure why this has shown up on two different Mac OS's.
Has anyone else come across anything like this?
Thanks in advance for any help.

    Hi
On the 10.5 client select the Finder Menu, select Preferences. Where it says "Show these items on the Desktop" enable Connected Servers. If you're new to 10.5 this can catch you out and make it seem as if there is no connected share point.
If the option is enabled and you're still having the problem double-check network settings first. What you could try for both affected clients is create a new admin user. Log in with it and see if the problem goes away.
If it does then you know its at least one or more corrupted/damaged preference or .plist in the Users Home Library Preferences folder.

  • Internal hard drives not mounting on startup

Problem: I recently did a clean install of Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion on my Early 2008 Mac Pro. Since then, one or more of my four internal hard drives will not mount at startup, and it's seemingly random which ones will or won't mount; it differs from one startup to the next. Obviously, the boot drive starts up, but the remaining three drives are hit-or-miss.
Troubleshooting So Far: I can open Disk Utility and mount the disk(s) manually, and when I click Verify Disk, the hardware checks out okay. After my most recent startup, I brought up the System Log in Terminal (sudo syslog -B) and found this entry for one disk ("Media 1") that did not mount:
    Apr 25 10:40:09 new-host-2.home fseventsd[48] <Critical>: event logs in /Volumes/Media 1/.fseventsd out of sync with volume.  destroying old logs. (454 0 68038)

There were no entries for the disks that mounted correctly. Can anyone make sense of this for me? The system jargon is a little beyond me.
    Thanks for your help!

Is "Media 1" the name of the volume, or is it just "Media"?

I am running an emac 1ghz powerpc G4 with 768MB sdram and version 10.4.9
I have an external hard drive that up to a few days ago ran smoothly. It contains all my itunes, iphoto, and imovie libraries.
Now it will not mount. It lights up, it runs, etc but I can't use it. I tried restarting machine etc. No avail.
it is a usb drive. Today I took it downstairs and plugged it into my daughter's windows xp machine. It recognized it right away (I was shocked too) and everything is there good as before.
I plugged it into every usb port in the emac and nothing. I am using the same cord on the xp and it works fine.
Any idea what it could be and how to fix it. I read on hear a lot to use disk utility. However when I run it it just freezes. When I turn that external drive off disk utility runs fine.

Your external drive is formatted FAT32 or FAT, or the Windows box would have a problem seeing it. (Unless you have MacDrive on that box, that is.)
If it is formatted FAT32 or FAT, you are NOT going to be able to use Disk Utility (or any other Mac utility) on that drive. Disk Utility doesn't do FAT.
I'd copy the contents of the drive elsewhere then start up Disk Utility first and then plug the drive into the Mac and format it FAT32 from Disk Utility. If that doesn't work, format it FAT32 on the Windows machine. Note: if this drive is larger than 32 GB, you're going to need to generate two or more partitions, as while WinXP can read FAT32 partitions larger than 32 GB, it can't create them. Macs and Linux boxes can create large FAT32 partitions. Second note: if the drive is smaller than 4 GB, you might want to think about formatting it FAT instead of FAT32. Indeed, Windows may insist. Do not let Windows format it NTFS; Macs can read NTFS volumes, but can't write to them.

  • External hard drive not mounting - what's happening?

All of a sudden one of my external firewire drives is not mounting, but that's not all....
it's not showing up in disk utility, not showing up in system profiler, not showing up on desktop, not showing up in finder, not showing up in Disk Warrior, and not showing up in TechTool.
When I turn on the power, it seems to spin up but doesn't mount. No usual noises either.
Could it be a faulty controller board on the enclosure?
    Any suggestions?
Really hope to figure this out, cause it has my entire itunes collection (500gb) on it.
    Thanks in advance.

First, try another FW drive or device in your computer to be sure that FW is working.
If you have more than one FW port, try the drive in it.
    Change FW cable.
Try the external HD on another Mac (do not use a PC!!!)
If none of above works, it's most likely the logic card in the enclosure, and not the external HD. I believe your data are OK.
