Driving me nuts - browser keeps timing out despite fixes

I have read through this and other forums in the hopes of finding a solution to my problem.  I am running Windows XP SP3, and with either Firefox or IE8 after 5-10 minutes my browser times out and won’t load any pages.  The only ways I can restore connectivity to the browser is to reboot or run the VPN software I use for work – once I establish a VPN connection there are no more time outs.  I thought that it might be a router or firewall problem, so I am now using opendns.org (both router and Windows fixes) and Malwarebytes for my protection software.  However, none of these changes has fixed the problem!  Is it possible that the Windows firewall is causing this?  I have been hesitant to turn it off.  I am hoping someone else has had this same problem and has a great solution they can suggest.
My thanks in advance for your help.

P.S. In the time it took me to write this post the server had timed out.  I rebooted any typed this is Word so I wouldn’t lose it…

Okay, I have a partial solution but one remaining question.
I am now convinced that the problem is my ethernet card is falling asleep and not waking up.  Searching the web revelaed that this is not an uncommon problem.  I received a response email from Actiontec, the maker of my FiOS router.  It indicated that the reason I was able to establish a VPN connection after my web browser had lost internet connectivity was that VPN acts as a pass through on their router.  However, the VPN software is clearly "waking up the ethernet card, because even after I disconnect the VPN connection my browser continues to work.  The Actiontec email suggested I take a look at the Windows and Ethernet card power management features, as they are notoriously flaky.  Here is what I have done to date:
Removed all traces of the McAfee anti-virus software.  Just running the Windows de-install won't remove all parts of this program.  Do a Google search and you will find a program from McAfee that removes the rest.
I went into Control panel to Power Options and switched to "always on".  Make sure hibernation is not activated.
I went into Control panel to Network connections to check the configuration of my ethernet card (Intel(R) PRO/1000 GT Desktop Adapter).  Under the Power Management tab I turned off "reduce link speed during standby" and under Wake on LAN checked "wake on directed packet."  At first I turned everything off, but with some experiementation found that checking the "directed packet" option seemed to help with losing connectivity.  However, this may be incorrect.
I updated my BIOS from version A07 to A09.  Under Power Management the choices were S1 and S3.  S3 was active, so I switched to S1, and that seemed to help.  I could not find a way to turn off power management altogether or an "always on" option.  After reading a little on the internet S3 appears to be hibernation, whereas S1 is just the CPU powering down.  Again, I have no idea if this is correct or not.
I updated the drivers on my ethernet card.  This had no effect i could detect.
After all of that, my internet conection still times out after 10 minutes unless I establish a VPN connection and then disconnect it.  Once I do that the ethernet card stays awake and I have no other issues. So, can anyone tell me what setting I need to change or what else I can do to keep my ethernet card awake?  All suggestions are welcome.  Thanks.

  • Can anyone help me!!! i have an i pod touch and the 4 digit passcode has been forgotten. i have tried a number of times to restore the factory settings on i tunes and have put the i pod into recovery mode, but attempts keep timing out

my son has forgotten his 4 digit pass code for hios i pod touch. i have been instructed to disable it and connect to i tunes to restore factory settings. when I do this the download time is anything up to 20 hours and it keeps timing out. it is now saying that i tunes cannot connect to the i pod because it is locked with a passcode and saying that i must enter the passcode - can anyone help?

    - To get around the passcode issue, place the iPod in recovery mode. For how to see:
iPhone and iPod touch: Unable to update or restore
    - If you are getting a network timeout error during the restore, disable the computer's security software during the restore.

  • Using Home Sharing to transfer itunes library from old computer to new but connection keeps timing out...anyone have a solution?

    Hello everyone,
I am attempting to use Home Sharing to import my itunes library from my old computer to new (as per instructions on this site), but the connection keeps "timing out" and so the import gets cut short.
Both computers have the new itunes (I updated them last night), but only seem to get about 5 minutes (or 100 songs in) before the connection error occurs.
I have an external hard drive and would use it to transfer my library (which is ~45GB) however my old computer isn't recognizing the hard drive so I thought Home Sharing was a good option...perhaps I was wrong?
    Help Please!
    Thanks

You might need to make sure neither is going to sleep (System Prefs > Energy Saver)
Also check your settings under System Prefs > Security. My sisters new laptop kept logging off due to some setting there.

  • Hi there can anyone help. I am connected to the internet by ethernet but my connection keeps timing out and my network diagnostics shows all green and network connection ok but still no internet connection. the other wireless laptop in my flat works well.

Hi there can anyone help. I am connected to the Internet by Ethernet but my connection keeps timing out and my network diagnostics shows all green and network connection ok but still no Internet connection. the other wireless laptop in my flat works well. Could the other wireless laptops being used in my flat be affecting my connection. what can I do to get connected, keep connected. Thanks for any ideas out there.

My network connected for a few hours then went back to timing out. I have not changed anything. However there four additional laptop users in my family who do not seem to be having any problems using their wireless connection. Could their film and music downloads be causing the timing out of my connection and if so is there a way I could prioritizes my computer or limit their use?

  • I can't connect to Wi-Fi - keeps timing out. No problem connecting from other laptops / phones. Stopped working after I did a system upgrade. What can I do?

I can't connect to Wi-Fi - keeps timing out. No problem connecting from other laptops / phones. Stopped working after I did a system upgrade. What can I do? I am on OS X Yosemite.

Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried, until the problem is resolved. Some of these steps are only possible if you have control over the wireless router.
    Step 1
Turn Wi-Fi off and back on.
    Step 2
Restart the router and the computer. Many problems are solved that way.
    Step 3
Change the name of the wireless network, if applicable, to eliminate any characters other than letters and digits. You do that on your router via its web page, if it's not an Apple device, or via AirPort Utility, if it is an Apple device.
    Step 4
    Run the Network Diagnostics assistant.
    Step 5
In OS X 10.8.4 or later, run Wireless Diagnostics and fix the issues listed in the Summary, if any.
    Step 6
Back up all data before proceeding.
Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Enter the name of your wireless network in the search box. You should have one or more "AirPort network password" items with that name. Make a note of the name and password, then delete all the items. Quit Keychain Access. Turn Wi-Fi off and then back on. Reconnect to the network.
    Step 7
You may need to change other settings on the router. See the guidelines linked below:
Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    Potential sources of interference
    Step 8
Make a note of all your settings for Wi-Fi in the Network preference pane, then delete the connection from the connection list and recreate it with the same settings. You do this by clicking the plus-sign icon below the connection list, and selecting Wi-Fi as the interface in the sheet that opens. Select Join other network from the Network Name menu, then select your network. Enter the password when prompted and save it in the keychain.
    Step 9
Reset the System Management Controller (SMC).

You did backup the iPad before you decided to update the iPad correct?
And you did transfer all of your apps and other purchases  into iTunes before you decided to update correct?
If you did, just restore the iPad and then restore from the backup at the end of fhe process and follow that with a sync with iTunes and you will lose nothing,
Now if you didn't do any of the precautionary steps ....

I am having trouble with my iPod 5th gen after iOS update. It's in recovery mode and iTunes keeps timing out when I try to restore it. What should I do??? If possible, I would also like to keep all of my data.

    Troubleshooting
As with all clickwheel iPods, you can reset this iPod by first toggling the hold switch on and off and then simultaneously pressing the select (center) and menu buttons for approximately 5-10 seconds. This is a common fix should your iPod behave unexpectedly or lock up. Once reset, the iPod should display an Apple logo for a few seconds before showing the main menu. This procedure is similar to rebooting a computer and damages none of your music or data.

If you are doing it via your computer's iTunes then try temporarily turning off all your firewall and antivirus software on your computer until the download/restore has completed.
