Dropdown list in BEx report

Hi Experts,
I am a portal consultant and working on presenting BI reports in Portal. While running my BI reports in portal i have encountered an error.
Whenever I try selecting the drop down list for a field (which is set as default and mandatory) in the variable screen of the BEx report, it is throwing an error. Where as for other fields, the drop down is working fine. This is happening for many reports which have the fields which are set to be default and mandatory
The error that is being shown is as follows:
The initial exception that caused the request to fail was:
java.lang.NullPointerException
Full Exception Chain:
com.sap.ip.bi.webapplications.runtime.DialogException: Error in rendering root for dialog "SELECTOR"
at com.sap.engine.core.thread.impl3.SingleThread.execute(SingleThread.java:102) at com.sap.engine.core.thread.impl3.SingleThread.run(SingleThread.java:172)
Caused by: java.lang.NullPointerException
Hope I am clear in explaining the problem.
Can anyone help me resolving the issue?
Thank You.

Murthy J N.

• Creating a Month dropdown list for a report with multiple datasets

I am currently working on a report that contains many charts that rely on multiple datasets. Currently, I have parameters @StartDate and @EndDate to display the information of the previous month across all the charts as my default value. Now, I would like
to create a dropdown list so that the user can pick any month, and have the report display the data across all the charts for that particular month, while keeping the display of the previous month as the default value. Can anyone help as to how I can approach
this. Would I have to use an expression when I specify my available values, or would I have to create a dataset to get the value of all 12 months? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This is essentially where I am having some trouble, as in creating the dataset that returns the individual months of the year as I am relatively to the use of SSRS. Could you possibly elaborate on how I can do so? Thank you in advance!
Create a dataset in SSRS
Inside dataset properties map datasource and then inside give command like
DECLARE @Month int = 5 --example value
SELECT ...
FROM Table
WHERE datefield >= DATEADD(mm,DATEDIFF(yy,0,GETDATE())*12 +(@Month-2),0)
AND datefield < DATEADD(mm,DATEDIFF(yy,0,GETDATE())*12 +(@Month-1),0)
then on refresh it will take field information and parameter information by itself.

• Dropdown lists appearing behind report regions

Has anyone encountered their dropdown lists disappearing behind page items. I have a report which sits just under the dropdown menus(lists). In the report I'm using HTMLDB_ITEM.SELECT_LIST_FROM_QUERY items. It displays fine but when I drop down a list, they disappear behind these items on the report.
Am I doing something really dumb?
Many thanks for any help.
Mary

Hi Mary,
Welcome to the wonderful world of IE and SELECT tags!
I think that there's nothing for it but to extend your javascript to make all of the select items invisible whilst a menu is open. How you do this depends on how smart you want the page to be. The idea is to set the SELECT objects style.visibility value to either "visible" or "hidden".
Something like:
<script type="text/javascript">
function showHide(sVisibility)
var xx = document.getElementsByTagName("SELECT");
var i;
for (i = 0; i < xx.length; i++)
xx[i].style.visibility = sVisibility;
</script>
Call this function as either "showHide('hidden');" or "showHide("visible");" as appropriate within the code that opens or closes the menu.
You could extend this to only show/hide those select elements that would actually be covered by the menu - this is doable but a bit of a pain as you have to identify the x and y co-ordinates of the select object and the menu div. Only do this if you really need to.

• SSRS report - A single selection dropdown list converted to text box

Hello everyone,
We created a single selection dropdown parameter (City parameter) on a report. The data in this parameter is populated using MDX query. Also, it is filtered based on selection of another single selection dropdown list (Country parameter) of a report.
The problem is when there is no cities for the selected country the dropdown list is gets converted to free type text box and user can insert city data in it. Why SSRS is not keeping it as empty dropdown list with no data?
Any help would be much appreciated.

Hello Charlie,
We developed a fresh report only with two parameters but still the dropdown control gets converted to text box in our case. We have two single selection parameters, Location and Customers. Based on selected Location the customer
dropdown gets populated.
Location Parameter Query
WITH MEMBER [Measures].[ParameterCaption] AS [Location].[Location Name].CURRENTMEMBER.MEMBER_CAPTION MEMBER [Measures].[ParameterValue] AS [Location].[Location Name].CURRENTMEMBER.UNIQUENAME MEMBER
[Measures].[ParameterLevel] AS [Location].[Location Name].CURRENTMEMBER.LEVEL.ORDINAL
SELECT {[Measures].[ParameterCaption], [Measures].[ParameterValue], [Measures].[ParameterLevel]} ON COLUMNS , [Location].[Location Name].ALLMEMBERS ON ROWS FROM [Model]
Customer Query
WITH MEMBER [Measures].[ParameterCaption] AS
[Customer].[Customer Name].CURRENTMEMBER.MEMBER_CAPTION
MEMBER [Measures].[ParameterValue] AS
[Customer].[Customer Name].CURRENTMEMBER.UNIQUENAME
MEMBER [Measures].[ParameterLevel] AS [Customer].[Customer Name].CURRENTMEMBER.LEVEL.ORDINAL
SELECT {[Measures].[ParameterCaption], [Measures].[ParameterValue], [Measures].[ParameterLevel],[Measures].[Amt]} ON COLUMNS,
nonempty([Customer].[Customer Name].ALLMEMBERS,[Measures].[Amt]) ON ROWS FROM ( SELECT ( STRTOSET(@LocationName, CONSTRAINED) ) ON COLUMNS FROM [Model])
Regarding parameter settings on General tab for both the above parameters we did not select any of the following values, all these checkboxes are empty:
Allow Blank Value ("") , Allow null value, Allow multiple values.
I think it has something related to [Measures].[Amt] that we used in customer parameter. We are now trying to take other two parameters where we would be not using the [Measures].[Amt] to filter the data. Will update you soon.
Thanks, Ankit Shah

• Customizing MSS reporting selection period dropdown list

We have diffrent ABAP programs that uses the PNP logical database and we want to customize the period selection dropdown list on the MSS reporting iview. In same scenarios we want to display only 'Today'. In these scenarios we use the report together with a variant.
When the user execute the report, the selection period on the variant is used and that is 100% correct. The problem is that the user change the selection period on the frontend (on the Iview) and this is not what is reflected on the output of the report, becasue the report uses a variant.
Therefore we want to customize the period selection dropdown list on the Iviewin the scenarios where a report uses a variant.
I know that we cannot customize the perido selction on the Iview, beacue we cannot set the properties on the Iview.
Is anybody familiar with how we can accomplish this.

Hi Darren,
We do have a property in the iview for which you can set the period. You need to know the name of the property. Give us the iview name so that we can have a look.

• Custom drop down list for the filter for BEX report

Hi, all:
I am writing a query for a BEX report that prompts the user to enter a value for a field "GL account". I would like to have the user select from a limited number of GL options rather than have the whole Chart of accounts show up. Is there a way to make a "custom" drop down list for the filter?
Thanks!
Jenny

You need to make your GL account info object as an authorization object. And in the info object ,for BEx you need to select the option "only authorized values".
Create an analyis authorization on gl account and assign the restricted set of GL accounts to the user. Asign this analysis authorization to the user.In the query restrict this infoobject with an authorization variable. This would solve your purpose.user would be able to see only a selected set of GL accounts for which he is authorized.

• Crystal Reports and values list of BEx variables

Hello.
I read this - http://wiki.sdn.sap.com/wiki/display/BOBJ/CrystalReportsandBWquery+elements
And there are writed in wiki:
"List of values for SAP variables are created automatically by Crystal Reports only when you use SAP Toolbar to create the report:
The list of values for a variable in Crystal Reports will be static, but the list will be always dymanic in InfoView as long as you use BW Publisher (save reports to BW, publish to BOE)and you logon to BOE using SAP Authentication."
I have two link to BEx queries from my CR report - and my variables have not values. I think that I don't use "SAP" menu when created the report.
But... what I can doing now? Is way transform "simple" report into "SAP" report?
May be is way create "SAP" report and after it copy all content of old report into new "SAP" report including all objects, formats, formulas, connections?
May be is way load values list from BEx query with "simple" reports?
And another question - I see that in list I get texts and codes but showing only texts in run-time. Can I tune CR for show codes too?

• Bex Report Designer: Error while loading metadata

hi experts,
I am working with BI7 Bex Report Designer and we are using SP9. when i tried to load the Query in Report Designer its giving below error.
Error while loading metadata.
Check the Query and portal settings.(but the query is working fine in Analyzer).
and its giving message class RSBOLAP, message number 018 and Description is java system error: incoming call is not authorized.
when i double click the error its giving below error details.
Diagnosis
An error occurred in the BI components on the SAP J2EE Engine.
System Response
Procedure
Contact your system administrator to have the error analyzed in detail.
Procedure for System Administration
Start the Visual Administrator, log on to the SAP J2EE Engine and choose "<J2EE_SID>" ->"Server" -> "Services" -> "Log Viewer".
The file "defaultTrace.trc" includes detailed information about the error that occurred. In Windows, you can find this file in the Log Viewer under "Cluster <computer name>" -> "Server <server number>" -> "<drive>:\usr\sap\<SID>\JC<INSTANCE>\j2ee\cluster\server<NUMBER>\log". ". In Unix, the file is located under "/usr/sap/<SID>/JC<INSTANCE>/j2ee/cluster/server<NUMBER>/log".
If the file does not include enough detail about the error, you can increase the log level to obtain more information. To do this, choose "<J2EE_SID>" -> "Server" -> "Services" -> "Log Configurator". On the "Locations" tab page, choose "com" -> "sap" -> "ip" -> "bi" -> "webapplications". Using the selection list on the right side of the screen, you can increase the log level, whereby "DEBUG" represents the log level with the most information. You can save your settings by choosing the "Save" icon. The change to the log level is active immediately. Once you have successfully analyzed the error, you should set the log level back to its default value using the appropriate pushbutton; continuous writing to the log file negatively affects the overall performance of the system.
could you plz suggest me how to rectify the problem.
regards
vadlamudi

Hi vadlamudi
The error message RSBOLAP 018 means, that the ABAP stack can't communicate with the Java Stack.
1) Please ensure, that the user, used for the Report Designer, is valid in the Portal too. Depending on the user management setup this means that there either needs to be the same user or an assigned user in the Portal.
2) In case the user is valid, it means a basic misconfiguration according to note 937697. In this case please run the Support Desk Tool and ensure, that all checks are green. Please ensure, that the latest version of the Support Desk Tool is used.
Regards,
Janine

• CPU usage while running Bex report

Hello,
Sometimes, when I run a Bex report with many lines the computer CPU Usage is 100% (=full ) for a long time. In some cases i need to do restart again for the computer.
In the WAD it doesn’t happened...
Did anybody have the same problem? Is there a way to reduce the CPU usage?
Please Advice,
Amir

Amir,
This is "normal" behaviour in Bex with query's which return very long lists. The client computer already received all data, but is formatting the layout.
Solutions:
1) a faster pc with enough memory (512 mb) and win200 or >.
2) a query with less return rows.
The reason that in wad (web reporting) this is not experienced is because the formatting (rendering html) from the result table is done within the WAS (application server, which is hopefully faster then your PC...). Your browser only receives the html page..no exotic hardware needed for that..
Any questions left: please ask; if you're satisfied please grant with rewards.
Kind regards Patrick Rieken.

• Need suggestion for designing a BEx report

Hi,
I need suggestions for designing a BEx report.
Iu2019ve a DSO with below structure:
1. Functional Location u2013 Key
2. Maintenance Plan u2013 Key
3. Maintenance Item u2013 Key
4. Call # - Key
5. Cycle u2013 Data Field
6. Planned Date u2013 Data Field
7. Completion Date u2013 Data Field
This DSO contains data like:
Functional -
Plan --- Item -
Call# --- Cycle -
Planned Dt -
Completion Dt
Location
11177 -
134 -
20 -
1 -
T1 -
02-Jan-2011 -
10-Jan-2011
11177 -
134 -
20 -
2 -
T2 -
15-Feb-2011 -
11177 -
134 -
20 -
3 -
T1 -
15-Mar-2011 -
11177 -
134 -
20 -
4 -
M1 -
30-Mar-2011 -
25000 -
170 -
145 -
1 -
T1 -
19-Jan-2011 -
19-Jan-2011
25000 -
134 -
145 -
2 -
T2 -
20-Feb-2011 -
25-Feb-2011
25000 -
134 -
145 -
3 -
T1 -
14-Mar-2011 -
Now Iu2019ve to create a report which will be executed at the end of every month and should display the list of Functional Locations whose Cycles were planned in that particular month, along with the last completed Cycle/Date.
Thus based upon above data, if I execute report at the end of (say) March then report must display:
Functional --- Curr. Cycle --- Planned Date --- Prev. completed Cycle --- Prev Completed Date
Location
11177 -
T1 -
15-Mar-2011 -
--- T1 -
-- 10-Jan-2011
11177 -
M1 -
30-Mar-2011 -
--- T1 -
-- 10-Jan-2011
25000 -
T1 -
14-Mar-2011 -
--- T2 -
-- 25-Feb-2011
Any idea how can I display Previous Completed Cycle and Completion Date (i.e. the last two columns)?
Regards,
Vikrant.

hi vikrant,
You can a Cube at the reporting layer which gets data from DSO and which has these 2 extra characteristics completion date and previous cycle along with other chars and keyfigures from DSO.
You can populate these based on your logic in the field routine.
Hope it helps.
Regards
Dev

• How to create dropdown or checkbox in report painter?

hi experts,
I would like to ask on how to create a dropdown / checkbox in my report painter's selection
screen.
thanks,

Hi,
For check box and list box look at the below example,
TYPE-POOLS: vrm.
DATA: w_param TYPE vrm_id,
it_values TYPE vrm_values,
wa_value LIKE LINE OF it_values.
PARAMETERS: p_rec_ty AS LISTBOX VISIBLE LENGTH 10,
p_check AS CHECKBOX.
AT SELECTION-SCREEN OUTPUT.
w_param = 'P_REC_TY'.
wa_value-key = '1'.
wa_value-text = 'AAAAA'.
APPEND wa_value TO it_values. "Add values like this for the list box
wa_value-key = '2'.
wa_value-text = 'BBBBB'.
APPEND wa_value TO it_values.
CALL FUNCTION 'VRM_SET_VALUES'
EXPORTING
id     = w_param
values = it_values.
START-OF-SELECTION.
READ TABLE it_values INTO wa_value INDEX p_rec_ty. "Get the value for the particular key
WRITE: wa_value-text , p_check.

• Is it possible to change fonts in dropdown lists for question screens?

I'm using Captivate 7, and creating training modules for a client with it. In these training modules, there are random quiz questions throughout. Some of these contain dropdown lists where the user will have to select choices A-D, etc. For some reason, after publishing, the fonts are all different within the dropdown list (Option A is in Times New Roman, Option B-D in Arial). I can't seem to find any option to edit these - does anyone have any insight on how to set these fonts?

Figured this one out. Using the P1_ROWS item, added a static LOV with the correct values to override the one APEX was providing. The P1_ROWS item goes in the Number of Rows (Item) field in the layout and pagination section of the report.
