Dropped frames - iMovie vs FCE only from Canon, not Sony

I have tapes shot on my new Canon Elura 100, SD, that import without complaint into iMovie but show lots of dropped frames in Final Cut Express. Imports from by onld Sony TRV never have a problem. Any idea what is going on?
Note - I used a Sony TRV-30 for years without a problem. I just picked up a Canon Elura 100. Now I get dropped frames all over the place on FCE import for tapes shot with the Canon. Out of interest I tried importing the tape shot on the Canon using my old Sony and I get the same problem. Tapes shot on the Sony have no problem. So evidently there is something on the Canon recorded tapes FCE does not like. The playback appears fine. iMovie import goes without a hitch. FCE I get a dropped frames notice and there are pauses in the playback of the imported video.

I rechecked and saw I was also starting to get dropped frames with the Sony, something I had not seen in years. Evidently there is something in my system now (perhaps 10.4.9?) that FCE2 does not like. I rebooted to an older installatioin of 10.3.9 and now both cameras are coming in without dropped frames.
Note: there were other Firewire devices connected, but not powered up.
I did not try changing the setup. Once I was in 10.3.9 everything came in.

  • Satellite A105 boot up only from HDD not from Floppy or CD-ROM

Even after C-MOS Set up, system is booting only from HDD not from Floppy or CD-ROM.
Is there any sepcific setting to set these controls in Satellite A-105 Model ?

    Hi
Do you mean an external floppy drive and external CD-ROM drive or a one which is built-in?
If you want to boot from the internal CD-rom drive so you have 3 possibilities.
    1. Changing the booting order in the BIOS to CD drive
    2. pressing the C button immediately after notebook starting
    3. pressing the F12 button immediately after notebook starting and choosing the CD drive
I think you should also be sure that you want to boot from the bootable CD.
If the CD is not bootable you will be not able to boot from the drive.
PS: If you want to boot from the floppy drive you can press instead of C button the U button

  • Dropping frames on my software only

Final Cut Pro X 10.8, on my laptop, keeps dropping frames from the footage imported from my hardrive. When I tried other computers with fcpx 10.8, same footage from same hardrive, no frames were dropped and worked perfectly. BUT I have to work from my laptop. I need to find out the cause! I have never had any issues before with my software.

Final Cut Pro X 10.8, on my laptop, keeps dropping frames from the footage imported from my hardrive.
Many laptops use a 5400 rpm disc which can choke video especially HD content or your drive may be more than 80% used.

  • IMovie 08 import problem from Canon ZR500 via Firewire DV cable

I have the device hooked up. The import window can control the camcorder (play, stop, rew, etc.). But, when I do PLAY, no image displays on the iMovie import screen. So, it is not importing anything. Why is this? Connectivity is good, but no image transfer. I can see the image on the screen of the camcorder, but not on my iMac. What's up? Any ideas?

    Hi Bruce
There can be so many things to this: Most common to omitt.
    • Camera defective - test on another Mac (when the A/D-chip is blown it behaves exactly as You describe)
    • FireWire Cable faulthy - most common origin to this (can't figure why there are so many bad cables out there)
    • Test Your Mac with another Camera - eventually re-set the FW-port (on big Macs by disconnecting
    mains for 10 - 30 minutes on PBs I don't know)
I've got an old killingly long list if this doesn't help.

  • Good HD camera for FCE - Sanyo? Canon? Sony?

I'm looking for a good HD camera for FCE (1920 × 1080 pixels; no tape, no HDD--just Memory).
Is anyone here using the Sanyo Xacti VPC-HD1010?
I could only find sample videos of the older HD1000 here:
    http://www.sanyo-dsc.com/products/lineup/dmx_hd1000/feature/02/index.html
Is the quality of the HD1010 better?
Or can someone recommend Canon (HF100?) or Sony?
    Thanks!

Please have a look at these cutouts of your examples:

During horizontal movements it doesn't look very good too. Why...?
I looked for other 1920 x 1080 sample movies on Vimeo, and most of them looked MUCH better than yours:
(I could only watch the MOVs and MP4s -- no MPGs, AVIs and WMVs -- where can I find the right plugins for QT...?)

  • Serial number from Canon not valid.

Hi - I have just purchased a Canon 6D in the UK, and it came with a Lightroom 5 license and CD.
Because my laptop doesn't have a disk drive, I have installed Lightroom 5 via the Creative Cloud installer - however when entering the license I've been provided, I am told the serial number is not valid.
What can I do to get this working?
    Thanks
    Josh

The Creative Cloud installer may be installing the CC version not the standalone version, so download LR 5.6 from the Adobe Updates page and it should work with your serial number, unless that CD has a special version on it, in which case you’ll need to copy the contents of the CD to a flash drive using another computer and install from the flash drive:

  • Dropping Frames in FCE 3

Im using FCE 3 and have a G5 tower running OSX 10.4.11. I import from a JVC GR-DV800U and a Canon XL-2 with a firewire cable. I haven't had any trouble, and after doing no video work for a couple of months, I suddenly am dropping frames when trying to capture from either device. It always happens right around 5 and a half minutes, and then Final Cut freezes up another five minutes as it works out the Dropped Frame message. Is this the result of a software update I have done?

Thank you very much. I tried looking in the forums for the answer originally, but if you don't know the cause, you don't really know what to look for. I've found it, with your help. Thanks so much!

  • Dropped frames from XDCAM EX HD (1080/24p) - Seems like a bug in FCP 6.

We're editing XDCAM EX HD (1080/24p) using the built in easy setup and dedicated built in drives as scratch disks. We have run all software updates and have the latest builds of final cut...
We keep on experiencing dropped frames on playback, but only on our NEW 8 core Mac Pro not on any of our other Mac's including our MacBook's.
Through a painful process of elimination, we found out that if you go to System Settings/Playback Control and you switch Gamma Correction from Accurate to Approximate it solves the problem. We have no idea why and would love an answer from Apple on this.
Moreover is this a bug or do we need to amend something on our system. As a note we've already matched pairs on the RAM and done all the other obvious stuff.
    Regards
    Daniel

Having the same issue with same format footage (1080/24p), the proposed solution works (a little). I can definitely playback a longer duration but it still drops frames. Even when putting a filter on and rendering it still drops frames.

  • What are highest quality export settings from iMovie to FCE 4.0?

I am using iMovie '08 to create Ken Burns effect movies from iPhoto photos to import into FCE. I want the least amount of loss from iMovie to FCE.
What are the highest quality settings for exporting from iMovie to FCE.
I do not care about size of file etc. Highest quality is all that matters to me.
    Cheers,
    Chuck

    Well here are the facts.
My original question rephrased: "I want to know what are the settings to export Ken Burns created movies (therefore using photos) from iMovie (in this case iMovie '08) with the least loss and regardless of file size for importation into Final Cut Express".
I went to the local Apple store and some of the users (employees) of Final Cut Pro mentioned appropriately they thought .DV would be the best. However when we played some created videos they looked horrible when compared to .MOV with H.264. This just did not make sense, but we went by what we were seeing. Not being able to think with this I did more research and found this article which explained why .DV lookes like pooh pooh compared to H.264 video.
The article http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93002 explains a setting in Quicktime preferences that if not selected some videos appear pixelated.
So, when this preference in Quicktime is selected (never thought to try playing on VLC) the .DV movies look better than those using H.264. So with this resolved then my trial and error testing was realistic. That is I could try different export settings and see which ones looked better to determine the best export setting.
I tried what I thought was everything as far as "Export using Quicktime..." settings. Then I read in "iMovie '08 & iDVD: The Missing Manuals" under "The Video Codecs: A Catalog" an explanation of every type of compression when using the settings under "Movie to QuickTime Movie". Finally someone wrote more data on the codecs. I never found such explanation on the apple website (discussions etc). I really got tired of reading how H.264 is the better than sliced bread "greatest quality for the file size" which I think is true but did nothing to answer my original question. The book then mentioned the option "none". I was like I don't remember this option for "Compression Type". (BTW this all applies to iPhoto '08, Final Cut Express 4, and QuickTime Pro). So I tried "None".
Wow! Zero pixelation! Vivid colors! So I created three videos. One using H.264, DV/DVCPRO - NTSC and None (I had already tried many others but for this last experiment just these three). I also maxed out the Quality for each compressor. Results:
    - H.264 colors looked a little faded from the original photos and minor minor fuzziness, file size about 6 MB
    - DV/DVCPRO - NTSC colors a little more vivid and less fuzziness, file size about 60 MB
    - None...Bam! absolutely photo quality resolution and color, file size about 600 MB. I didn't care about the size.
So, bingo "None" as as the compressor settings in Quicktime to export iMovie '08 Ken Burns effect slide shows for importation into Final Cut Express (FCE) with minimal loss and who cares about the file size. Yeah, this is mammoth file but this allows me to make snappy Extremely High Quality Ken Burns effect videos in iMovie for FCE. Then when I export from FCE I don't make a copy of a copy but make my first compression of the video.
    That is my answer!
I consider this thread closed and will only open if I find any of this is incorrect. BTW I already imported the iMovie '08 video with compression "None" into FCE and after rendering it looks awesome and plays well.
    Cheers,
    Chuck

  • Dropped frames on Xserve RAID upgraded w/750GB drives.

I'm capturing in 10-bit uncompressed standard definition 720x480. I just upgraded one side of my Apple XRAID, (connected directly via fibre channel) with seven, 750GB hard drives from Apple, drives designed for the XRAID, (came with there own sleds.)
Current Xserve RAID firmware version is at version 1.5.1/1.51c
Before the upgraded drives, no issues with dropped frames, (drives 1-7) the other side of the same RAID has no problems, (currently running 250GB drives, drives 8-14.) All sleds are populated with drives of the same capacity, (respective to each side.)
The drives were formated using the Xserve RAID Admin software and mounted using Apples Disk Utilities, Journaling turned off. The final formated capacity of the RAID on drives 1-7 is 4.1TB.
When I capture to the drives on the upgrade side, I get dropped frames. When capturing to the other side, no issues, works great. I checked the settings for performance and they are the same for both sides, as follows:
Use Controller Write Cashe - ON
Allow Host Cashe Flushing - OFF
Use Drive Write Cashe - ON
Use Steady Streaming Mode - OFF
    Read Prefetch: 128 stripes (8 MB/disk)
My capture box is an AJA I/o and has never given me dropped frames till now, but only on the side of the RAID that has the new 750GB drives. I also have another RAID that uses 500GB drives on both sides and it work just fine as well, (no dropped frames) using the same performance settings in XRAID utilities.
Any suggestion on why these new Apple drives modules are dropping frame would be very much appreciate. Again 7 new 750GB drives from Apple w/sleds having dropped frame issues.

I'm capturing in 10-bit to avoid loss of quality from analog sources like BetaCam SP as well as line 21 must be part of the captured file, because it contains line 21 for captioning. Eight bit has a banding issue that I can't have in the final product and 10-bit doesn't have this issue.
Source quality is maintained completely when working in 10-bit uncompressed, as well as the captioning data that I need, which is stripped out of the captured video latter. Captioning software can read line 21 of the raster area, of the captured file.
Source video is from BetaCam SP, DVC Pro and DVCam.
The RAID is an Apple Xserve RAID, connected via Fibre channel directly, (no xsan.)
I also create high quality QuickTime Streaming files from these source files, the higher the quality of the source video the the better the streaming files look when created.
I have never had any problem capturing till I installed these new drives from Apple.
The RAID is as stated above, is an Apple Xserve RAID, connect via a fibre channel card in a Mac Pro 3.0GHz tower, (no xsan is used, due to connecting directly to the XRAID.)

  • Multicam with dropped frames

    Hi,
I have a few clips with some dropped frames that I need to sync for multicam, but
    I cannot recapture the footage.
The only thing I can do is export a 'repaired clip' and sync that.
I have marked the 'long frames'
Can anybody tell me how to 'repair' the clips so that when I export the 'repaired' clip and reimport them, they will stay in sync? (hope i've made sense)

I just finished a multicam project which had a ton of dropped frames over 8 cameras, and I didn't set it to start a new clip on dropped frames. It was a live concert.
What I did was, once I got the audio mix from the band, I laid it out on the timeline and locked those tracks. Then I dropped the first camera onto it, synced it up at the beginning, and hit play. When I saw a dropped frame, I sliced the video track and slid it down the timeline until the remaining footage was in sync. I inserted color bars instead of the slugs Randy recommended. That way it's easier to see in the multiclip 9-up view when a dropped frame area comes up, and I knew not to use that angle. But I'm getting ahead of myself. Once I went all the way through an angle, I would export a new self-contained QT movie of that angle and import it into the project. Then I'd duplicate that sequence, remove the video, and bring in the next camera. Shampoo rinse repeat.
Once I had all the angles done, I created a mutliclip with all my new clips. By locking the audio and duplicating those clips, each new QT movie had the same timecode, and I was able to sync by timecode, instead of in point on my multiclip.

  • Dropped Frames & Firewire Busses - A Discussion

A side discussion broke out on this recent thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=231733&tstart=0
and because this discussion is OT to the thread, I thought it might be helpful to start a new on-topic thread.
A number of FCP users have experienced dropped frames when capturing or outputting to tape while using a DV VCR/camcorder and a firewire drive for media on the same FW bus. There are many causes for dropped frames, but this discussion centers on the relationship between FW drives, DV devices, and using a single firewire bus.
Some say that having the DV device and the firewire media drive on the same bus can be a cause of dropped frames with some systems. Others disagree. I'm in the first camp, so I'll leave it to others to explain the other side.
I'm starting this thread to pick up where the side discussion on the thread linked above left off.
    In response to Hughes Video:
If I'm reading your post correctly, my opinion is that your testing doesn't adequately address the real world situation. In practice, the FW port on the DV device is receiving data at 3.6MB/sec and buffering. Then it sends a data stream to the FW bus at about 12MB/sec, where is again buffered before being sent to the destination drive.
The benchmark test results you noted don't predict what happens in the real world when capturing a DV stream from a VCR/camcorder to a FW drive. To do that, you need to be able to report in a time graph what the throughput is for every 1/30 of a second while capturing.
I'm not sure that's what Adam Wilt has done, but he's told me that he's done thorough testing that proves the points he's made. I don't know what testing that entails.
I do know, as I posted in the other thread, that when those who are having dropped frames separate the DV device from the FW drive on separate busses, their problems resolve. I don't know the technical reason for that, but I theorize that it has to do with the data moving and buffering in both directions on the same bus simulteneously. If the bus speed is decreased when both devices are on the same bus (whether daisy-chained or on separate ports), I don't know. But I know the problem resolves when you separate them.

this begs the question though: how do users of an
imac or a mini get around the limitations of one
internal harddrive and one firewire bus?
    zeb
They can't. iMac's are a consumer (and terribly sexy) computer. Make no mistake, if you are doing this for a living you need a PowerMac. Want less headaches with dropped frames and FW? Then take a closer look at better drives. G-Raid, Weibetech, and Granite Digital make the best out there, and invest in another FW 800 card for 'em. End of story.
Want to avoid dropped frames forever and ever with any video format? Forsake FW drives for fibre. SCSI is dying a slow but steady death IMHO.
Yeah, it all costs more, but you GET more (speed). Faster drives don't drop frames. Nothin' new there...
There is a tendancy with new users of NLE's to cut corners. Don't do that, because it results in unhappy NLEing.
Do I use FW drives? Of course I do, and use exclusively the above brands, I've clients who want to keep all media ever captured. (also a good idea) but I include in my invoices the cost of buying more FW drives to do the job. It works, I don't drop frames, have happy clients, and drop frame free system. I'm using the G-Raids for uncompressed storage and FW 800 Weibetech and Granite digital rigs for DV res storage. It works beautifully.

  • XF Utility drops frames in playback on my Mac Book Air

    Hello,
I recently purchased a C300 and I am using a 2013 Mac Book Air to transfer media from the camera to external hard drives.
All works well except XF Utility drops frames when playing back footage from media that has been transferred to the laptops hard drive and also my external hard drives.  I am using the latest version of XF Utility (1.3.0) and here are the tech specs for my Mac Book Air:
Processor  1.7 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory  8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics  Intel HD Graphics 5000 1024 MB
My iMac desktop from 2007 plays the footage back with no dropped frames, no hiccupps.  I have a hard time beleiving that the latest the processor and graphics components on a 2013 MacBook Air cannot play back the footage without dropping frames.  Anyone have any ideas what might be my problem?
    Thank you.

    Hello jdbrunet,
We are not aware that this is a common issue with the footage shot with the EOS C300.  Since XF Utility seems to drop frames, the next thing to try would be another program to see if the footage drops frames there as well.  This would give us an idea if the issue is solely within XF Utility or the computer as a whole.
Desktops are generally more stable with regards to video processing because most Mac systems that are built for editing have more RAM and would handle the flow of video better.  You do not list the spec's for the iMac, so we cannot say this for certain.

  • DROP FRAME MINIDV TAPES

Hey guys, I've got some MiniDV tapes that a client gave me that seem to all have a glitch where the tapes won't play audio and are skipping frames continuosly. The tapes are all labelled "drop frame" and "avid output". They are not playing in the DV deck (JVC) so it's actually not a FCP question. Does anyone know what this is?

As Wes said, it could very well be a dirty head(s) or misalignment problem. But are you certain the material on the tape is actually DV and not some other format? I've seen DVCam and DVCPro recorded onto MiniDV tapes in a pinch and while some DV VTRs will play DVCam footage, they don't always playback other formats.

  • Dropped frames importing HDV from Canon HV20

    Hi all,
I have a strange problem. When I capture a HDV tape with my Canon HV20 camera it runs ok for some time but starts dropping frames after a random time. It shows a yellow triangle in the capture screen. Sometimes it stops the capture half way by it self before the end of the tape is reached.
I can see that the memory is then full and the swap is +-1.2 Gig.
I disconnected all other firewire / USB stuff from the mac.
    320G of free Disks pace.
Capture in FCE works ok but when importing it in to imovie the timestamp is not there.
    Any idea's?
    Cheers,
    Jeroen

I tried reinstalling Quicktime, trashing my preferences, and repairing permissions, but the problem still persists. I think this problem may be different in nature from the communications problems that article is designed to address. When I try to import HD video it fails, but I can capture standard definition video recorded on the same tape without even having to disconnect my camera. I just close the capture window, find a section of tape with standard def video on it, and it captures without a hitch. I may be completely wrong about this, but it seems like Final Cut is just not able to recognize the HD video that has been captured on the tape. If anyone has experienced a similar problem or knows of a solution, help would be greatly appreciated.
