DSC Package resource handling EXE (not MSI)

I am working through using the built-in Package resource provider for Desired State Configuration and I am having issues with using .EXE files with it (not MSI).
I see no failures in Trace-xDscOperation and I also don't see any attempt at processing the package, nor any errors with the attempt.
.EXE don't have 'ProductId' as a property (not the GUID that an MSI has) so I am a little confused as to how to set this up properly.
All of the documented examples are with MSI packages, not EXE.

Disclaimer: Attempting change is of your own free will.

If you use the Start-DscConfiguration with the -debug switch the script file has very comprehensive debugging enabled. It *should* tell you where things are going wrong.
having read through the script a little (you'll find it at C:\Windows\system32\WindowsPowershell\v1.0\Modules\PSDesiredStateConfiguration\DSCResources\MSFT_PackageResource\MSFT_PackageResource.psm1 ) Might help you identify what's going on.
But it seems that for an exe the ProductId is used as the identifier for the uninstall directory. so you should be able to use [guid]::NewGuid() to create a new random one and pass that into it.
Hope this helps! Let us know how it goes - we're all still learning the quirks of this!

  • Exporting document as print PDF having custom Links not raising "CreateResourceStream" on custom Links Resource Handler.

Print PDF export not raising any callBack(CanCreateResourceStream, CreateResourceStream) on my custom resource handler (ILinkresourceHandler) this lead to Low resolution images on PDF on other hand all Other export like Interactive PDF, PNG, JPEG even Print are working fine .CustomDataLink Sample also have same problem .

Print PDF Export & IDML Export work on background thread means only model plugin get callbacks related to PDF export but my LinkResourceHandle Implemented in UI Plugin so I fix my problem by moving LinkResourceHandler implementation to new model plugin.if you want it to be in UI pligon only than put an empty text file name "DisableAsyncExport" in macos content folder inside app on mac, this will disable background export of PDF & IDML .

  • EXE to MSI convert issue

    Hello All,
How do i convert exe to msi. i used 3rd party tools but nit work. Can anyone please suggest
    Thanks

    Hello,
There is no feature in Windows that can handle this request. As you already mentioned you need to use third party tools but they are not tested and in most cases they do not appear to work. Either you have to use a product like SCCM in order to deploy Exe
files or consider deploy it using ZAP files.
    Publish no-MSI packages using Zap
Another option is to check software if it is capable of command line silent installation and make it happen using start-up scripts.
    Regards.

  • Make a DSC Script resource execute with elevated privileges

    Hello Everyone,
Is there a built-in way into DSC to make it execute certain resources as administrator with elevated privileges on Windows 8.1?
What's i'm trying to achieve for example is install SQL Express 2012 in a Script DSC resource, but it keeps telling me that i'm not admin with and fails. If i run the same command from command prompts ("As administrator") it succeeds.
    C:\downloads\SQLEXPR_x64_ENU.exe /Action=Install /qs /IAcceptSQLServerLicenseTerms /InstanceName=sqlexpress /ROLE=AllFeatures_WithDefaults /SQLSYSADMINACCOUNTS="BUILTIN\Administrators"
A similar situation is when I want to disable Windows Firewall in a WindowsProcess resource:
powershell.exe "netsh firewall set opmode disable"
That would also blow up because i'm not admin.
I've tried to give the admin credentials to the DSC resources but it seems on windows 8.1, it's different from "Run as Administrator"
So far I've managed to achieve some of this by running it from a PSExec session to the same machine which i'm currently configuring, but this seems like a hack to me.
Please let me know if there is a way around this.
    Thanks in advance!

in all three methods you can use the above command to install the package.
And you can create you .msi package out of the Administration tool.

  • Convert EXE to MSI

can we convert the exe to msi using the tool which is given in windows server 2000 under 3rd party tool(veritas).if it is possible how to do it.or else do we hv a tool in sccm to convert to exe to msi.either of way pls tell me the process.

You can't use a .exe as a package definition. Sometimes the program manufacturers will create a package definition file (formerly .pdf, and now .sms for obvious reasons :-) .msi files can be imported as package definition files as well.
However, you can still just create a package (not from definition), and then create your own program to call setup.exe with whatever command line parameters you want. A package definition file just pre-creates the package and programs for you, but you can easily create them on your own also.

This is a new one on me.
It's a server program to interface with QuickTime and some other problematic services.
If you use video or 3D in Photoshop Extended, you probably need it.
Sounds like you are correct in that it has to do wtih Quicktime.  Do you have PS extended?

I have a problem getting "File Server Resource Manager" to start properly because WMI objects are not loading??? I don't understand this at all because I am able to access them with other Apps, etc. I have been over my Services list as well but
have not yet discovered which Service turns on/off "File Server Resource Manager". I have looked in Windows\System32\ and I can not find SrmSvc. I found other Srm's there though. I also found the FSRM Snapin which generates the Figure below but I
can not find it in the WMI Browser. I believe the Firewall is OKAY since I have been over that thoroughly. I do have the Server Tools Installed for Windows 8.0 or Windows 8.1 Clients as well as the Windows Updates applied, which is where I got "File Server
Resource Manager" in the first place. I have had WMI and Powershell 3.0 Package, installed since Windows 7 but I run a repair on them anyway.
I have read through "File Server Resource Manager could not load WMI objects on Windows Server 2012
Article ID: 2831687" but since I don't seem to have SrmSvc the solution doesn't help me. I haven't been able to find a similar one for the Windows Client.
If there is anything you could share on this problem I would be much obliged.
    Thanks again,
    Crysta

    Hello,
The Windows Desktop Perfmon and Diagnostic tools forum is to discuss performance monitor (perfmon), resource monitor (resmon), and task manager, focusing on HOW-TO, Errors/Problems, and usage scenarios.

    Hi,
Your Tomcat is running also in port 8080.
    Change Tomcat or EPG port
This might help change XE EPG port

another questions: in general, would you suggest to use a controller.jsp instead of the servlet?

    hi
    1) i compiled the .java by using eclipse and did not get any error message
    2) my directory structure:
    webapp\test\form.jsp
    webapp\test\WEB-INF\web.xml
    webapp\test\WEB-INF\classes\coreservlets\ShowParamaters.class
    webapp\test\WEB-INF\classes\coreservlets\ServletUtitlities.class
do i have to add the ServletUtilities.class also in the web.xml?
thanks for helping cannot find any error :(
