Dual display preferences

I have an 23" aluminum Apple display attached to my iMac. I do not have a way to control the brightness or on/off button like I did with my old G5 tower, either on the monitor or within the preferences. Is there any way to get these buttons back?

Hi marconi de baloni,
Thanks for the question. Based on what you stated, it seems like the computer is not recognizing a second display. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help you resolve or isolate the issue.
OS X Yosemite: Connect multiple displays to your Mac
If a display is not recognized, choose Apple menu > System Preferences on the primary Mac, click Displays, then click Display.
Open the Display pane for me
Then click the Detect Displays button.
You can also try putting your Mac to sleep and then waking it.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
Cheers,
Mario

Display Preferences does not detect dual monitors.
    There is no workaround here.
Only a prompt update from apple will solve this.
Any level 5 geniuses I welcome your guidance... please prove me otherwise.

  • My monitor's resolution not available in display preferences

    Hi:
I upgraded our Dual 1.0 Ghz G4 to OS 10.4.8 this afternoon. We use a ViewSonic VG150 LCD monitor on this computer, and the native resolution of the monitor is 1024x768.
Unfortunately, after updating, the only resolution available in the display preferences is 1280x768, so everything is tall and squished.
Is there any way to make that correct resolution available in the Display preferences panel?
I used to have some problems with this monitor while running OS 10.3.7. When first starting the computer the monitor would look like it was at the wrong resolution, even though the resolution was set to 1024x768 in the menu bar. I'd have to switch it to a wrong resolution, then back to 1024x768 to get the monitor to look right.
    Thank you.

    Hi:
Thanks for the info. It looks like either of those apps should fix the problem, though I was hoping there was a solution within the OS which would fix it (without having to buy something). I'm not trying to do anything out of the ordinary, just trying to get the monitor to run at the resolution it was designed for.

  • Display Preferences refuse to stay set.

Brand new 2010 8Core 2.4Ghz MacPro. ATI 5870 video card. Running 3 displays - 2-24" Dell UltraSharps and a 30" Apple Cinema Display.
Using 2 Dual Link DVI to Mini Display Adapters in order to drive all 3 displays.
    Card ports =
    MiniDisplay #1 - Apple 30"
    MiniDisplay #2 - 24" Dell
    DVI Port - 24" Dell
The Dells have a max resolution of 1920x1200. I have them rotated to portrait (90°) via Display Preferences.
I HAD to set the Apple 30" in Mini Display port #1 so it would be seen as the primary monitor at all times. Simply dragging the menu bar in Displays > Arrange works for a while.. but read on....
System runs and operates fine overall. I set the Display Preferences, arrange the three monitors (24 - 30 -24) and set the rotation for the Dells. All works and is great while I'm sitting there.
I leave the system for 15 minutes or more and come back to it sleeping. When I hit the spacebar to wake, the Dell displays reset to either 1200x1600 resolution (stretching the picture), lose the 90° rotation, or both. If the Apple 30" isn't plugged into MiniDisplay Port #1, then whatever monitor IS plugged into that port becomes the primary. If I reset things, via Display Preferences, it's all great again until the system sleeps for more the 15 minutes again.
I've tried everything I can think of - zapping PRAM - reinstall the OS - trashing com.apple.windowserver.plist - locking com.apple.windowserver.plist (well setting permissions to read only, you can't lock that file).
Nothing I do will allow the monitors to retain their settings. Am I missing some trick somewhere?
Long time Mac User, previous MacPro with two nVidia cards didn't have this issue.
In addition.. not display related, but I'm finding disk access on the new MacPro horribly slow. Initial disk access takes 3-5 seconds every time. This is exceptionally abnormal for me. I'm not certain if it's an issue with the machine or the OS. This new system purchased last month is my first real exposure to OS10.6.4 on a regular basis. I did completely erase and install the OS when the system arrived as I always do.
    Any ideas?

Wasn't due to a bad machine.
I have had 2 machine swaps since my October purchase of a 2010 MacPro. First system had a hard freeze at ~80% load and Apple requested a swap. Second system shorted out after 44 days of use. Short was not in the power supply ro logic board, it was deeper. I requested a new machine at that point.
So I'm on my 3rd new MacPro since October.... display issues have been the same on all three systems. It's obviously a firmware/video driver issue.
Let's hope this third system actually lasts longer than 45 days. So far, I'm swapping machines due to bad hardware every month and a half.

  • Dual Display - help with Cinema Display for MacBook Pro where MB won't detect displays.

I just got a Cinema Display (a1081 20") ("CD") off eBay to use as a dual screen with my Macbook Pro OS X 10.6.8 ("MB"). However, I can't get MB to recognize CD! I've tried power cycling both the MB and the CD with and without USB cord connected. MB won't recognize CD display in any situation. However, it is recognized in some capacity although I can't use dual display because the CD power button triggers MB to ask me if I want to restart, shutdown, or cancel.
    Any help is appreciated!!

Have you tried smc and pram resets?
Try Detect Displays in the Displays preference pane.
Does the Displays preference pane Arrangement show two screens?  If so do click gather windows and check the resolution setting of the new screen.

  • Dual displays

i have a sharp 19" tv that I have connected to my mac mini using the mini display port to vga on the sharp with no problems.  my mac sees it.  I just connected a samsung 37" to my mini via straight HDMI, no problems there either, my mac sees both.  I went into Preferences/displays and arrange.  I can mirror without problems.  the problem comes in when i want to extend my desktop.  I uncheck mirror display and one screen has the menu bar and the other does not... as it should but I can 't move my mouse (or any apps) from one screen to the other.  what am i doing wrong?

In Arrangements, not only can you move the Menu Bar from one display to the other, but you can also move the display orientation, so that they coincide with the true location of each monitor.
Hopefully > Using Dual Displays on Mac OS X will help.

  • Dual displays, mac screen broken?

I have a mac os x 5.8, and I bought it new about a month ago.
I have been using a dual monitor, and had no problems.
I Turned it off the other night, and in the morning when i tried turning it back on, the screen on the macbook is not visible. It will not light up at all, but if you look hard enough, you can see the faintness of the programs open. I was able to get the displays preference up on the dual monitor, and when hitting Mirror Displays, I am now able to use the mac on the dual monitor.
Does anyone know how to fix this problem?
I have turned off the mac, unplugged the dual monitor cable, and rebooted, and that did not fix it.
    Thanks-Dan

It might be that the actual backlight has gone out on your display. If you bought it new just a month ago, I would highly suggest taking it by an Apple Store to get it repaired for free. It should be covered under Applecare.

  • Dual displays ("extended desktop") on the iBook

This is in response to a previous query that was strangely archived despite the original poster receiving no definitive answer.
The iBook G4 (and various other iBooks) does not support "spanning" dual displays (I believe Apple calls this feature "extended desktop") with Leopard. Evidence of this is the missing "Arrangement" tab in the Display system preference pane.
The Tiger version of Spanning Screen Doctor (http://www.rutemoeller.com/mp/ibook/ibook_e.html) does, indeed, work correctly on an iBook G4 running 10.5.4. After rebooting, the "Arrangement" tab will now appear in the Display pane.
Hopefully this saves some iBook users some time and effort in resolving this issue.

    Thank you for yor help.
I have one more question to ask? If I use the LCD TV like Sony or Samsung with the New i-Mac will I loose deskspace on the LCD TV due to the low resolution on the LCD TV? I thought the LCD TV was a good idea since it has all the input for all my DVD player, TV box?, Nintendo, and the VHS?, but I was told that LCD TV might not be too compatible for use with a computer.
How do I put all my stuff on a Apple 23" LCD display I only can find adapters that can only take one peripheral at a time, and I don't want to re plug a TV box each time I want to watch TV. It looks like I need a box for use with Apple display with 3~4 input and S video, and HDMI input for the HD stuff?
Again thank you for all your help.

  • Dual Displays (Fooling Keynote)

I read something online and I can't find it anymore. What I'm looking for is how to "fool" my Powerbook and Keynote into thinking I have dual displays so I can test out my presentation's presenter options.
I know it had something to do with attaching the dongle, changing the System Preferences and Keynote Preferences. I also remember that things had to be done in a specific order. I have tried a few combinations, but none of them work. I've also searched the web with not luck.
Does this ring a bell with anyone?
I'll be presenting Monday morning at a convention from my laptop with a projector that will be set up in my classroom. Unfortunately, I won't be able to practice until 1 hour before my presentation.
    Thanks!

Do you have Keynote 3? If so, simply go to the View menu and choose "Rehearse Slideshow". That view will let you see the show as if you are viewing the Presenter Display.

  • Display preferences/calibration

20 inch i mac (alum). Went to display preferences and went to calibrate a profile(expert mode). I could not get the sliders to hide the apple at all. Seemed the sliders were all out of sync, one slider was off the page and moving it back to hide the apple did not help? It says move sliders so the apple blends (not seen) in background. Well it would not work or do it( could not blend the apple? why is that? Now it seems they are all off. Except the imac one which is good and left as is. Seems RGB is off etc. Is there a way to get those back?

    Thanks for your reply!
I found and tried SuperCal and got a very nice result, with one problem: SuperCal does not allow a wide enough range of color temperature adjustment. The least blue result I could get was still too blue.
After extensive experimentation I got somewhat better results with the Apple tool, by carefully choosing values and then setting the color temperature to about 6200 K instead of D65. Whites and dark colors are now fine. The midrange is still too blue, but much less so. At this point I can live with it.
It still seems bizarre to me that the default values are out of the range of the Apple tool, though. This is only one of a few signs I've found that these machines were rushed out the door...

  • G4 Extended Desktop via 'dual display'

My G4 has two outputs from the Nvidia Card, a standard vga and the
'rounded edge' style AppleDisplay output. Two part question here:
    1) may I simply use an appledisplay connector-to-vga converter dongle,
in order to send through that second output to a standard vga (non apple)
    monitor?
    2) Would using these outputs simultaniously render the 'extended desktop',
or are they just a duplicate of the same output?
Thank you kindly for any info on this.

It depends on which NVIDIA card you have. Anything older then the GeForce4 MX won't run two VGA displays. The GeForce2 MX TwinView can run two displays, but the ADC to VGA adapter won't work with this card, so only one can be VGA.
If your card does support dual displays, you can choose mirrored or extended desktop in the "Arrangement" tab of "Displays" system preference.

  • HT5019 No arrangement tab in my Display Preferences! Help!

I have a rocketfish Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter hooked up to an Apple DVI to video adapter, hooked up to an S-cable & Video Cable to the TV. When I hook everything up, the macbook screen momentarily turns blue but then the desktop comes back on.  I tried the Detect Displays button under Display Preferences but nothing happened.
Everyone has been saying to "click the arrangement tab and then mirroring option under display preferences"... but that option isn't available!
Any help would be much appreciated!

    Thanks for your reply!!
I have a MBP 13" early 2011: this is what my manual says:
DVI output using Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter (optional)
VGA output using Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter (optional)
Dual-link DVI output using Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter supports 30-inch Apple Cinema HD Display (optional)
HDMI audio and video output using a third-party Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter
And yes, an s-video cable. (Is that bad?) I managed to hook up my dad's laptop with the S-video cable and it worked fine. (His laptop has an s-video output port). But with these cords something doesn't want to work. The person at Future Shop told me it should work.. :/
My TV has no HDMI port. This is similar to what my TV looks like in the back:
The following two images are basically what I'm using to connect to the macbook.

  • Missing "Arrangement" tab in Display preferences

Hi all, I hope this topic hasn't been discussed before, but I did search fo it and didn't find anything. I'm trying to display my "presenter display" content on my MBP (15") screen when using Keynote, and I take it the way to do that is to have the display set to "dual display" mode using the arrangement tab in display preferences. Problem is, I DON'T have any arrangements tab in my disp. preferenecs, I have just two tabs, Display, and Color.. I have the ATI Radion X1600 chip with 128MB VRAM if that's any use. thanks in advance....

    Hi,
You need to have the external display connected for the "Arrangements" tab to appear. You then, simply, drag the red strip to the left, right or top if you are in extended mode to arrange the displays.

  • Displays preference pane not working?

I am on a new MacPro 2.66 Dual running 10.4.8 with a brand spankin' new
20" NEC MultiSync LCD 2070NX display. I am trying to calibrate my monitor so I can get back to one of my daily duties - color correction. I have the NEC display software installed which is very limited. I can adjust brightness, contrast, or use an already predetermined color profile. Not acceptable in my
professional opinion so I would love to use Apples display preferences to fine-tune my own profile.
When I click on the displays pane I get the following message - "You cannot open Displays preferences pane on this computer. Contact the developer of this software for a newer version."
I find this ironic because I am on the newest OS, I tried NEC support and they told me it's an Apple issue. I know I should have purchased an Apple LCD but at the deal I got on the NEC I couldn't pass it up. The reviews in MacWorld for the NEC were great as well as Amazon. Been through the forumns and googled what I could but to no avail my displays pane is still inoperable.
    Ideas anyone?

You can try reinstalling the Displays preference pane. Download the shareware utility Pacifist and use it to extract a fresh copy from the file archives on the Tiger DVD. The archives are in the /System/Installations/ folder.
I would also suggest the following:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
