Dual monitor (w/laptop): external monitor is blank.

Hi! just installed arch for the first time a day ago. Right now what I'm working on is on getting my second monitor running (mostly for development purposes... and movies ^__^).
I'm using Arch64 with the open ATI driver and KDE. Whenever I connect the external monitor, the monitor seems to detect a connection occurred (the "check video cable" message disappears when I connect it and comes back when I disconnect it), and so does KDE. When I open my display settings, it tells me a new monitor was connected and asks me if I want to configure it.
Then I choose to configure and use the two monitors giving the following screens (right now I'm at college testing with monitors in there, thus the low resolution, but behavior seems to be exactly the same):
(EDIT: resized. In case of wishing to read full images, just take the "resized/" out of the URI)
However pretty the full screenshot looks like (... I just mean that even if it looks like the second monitor is working), the monitor remains blank.
Using arandr (xrandr's gui), it is exactly the same result. I might be doing something wrong (almost certainly I am ) (EDIT: decided it was a good idea to show what I did with xrandr).
In /home/<myuser>/.xinitrc my file looks like this:
#!/bin/sh
# ~/.xinitrc
# Executed by startx (run your window manager from here)
xrandr --output VGA-0 --mode 1440x900 --pos 1600x0 --rotate normal --output LVDS --mode 1600x900 --pos 0x0 --rotate normal --output HDMI-0 --off
if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ]; then
for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/*; do
[ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
done
unset f
fi
exec ck-launch-session startkde
# exec gnome-session
# exec startkde
# exec startxfce4
# ...or the Window Manager of your choice
The laptop's model is Toshiba Satellite L775d. I'm not sure what other information should be required in this situation, but I will be loving to give anything that isn't compromising
Thank you!
(PS: so far Arch has treated me nicely let's see for how long)

I wondered the same. I initially only used KDE for it (that's how it worked in other distros, but I'm guessing Fedora and Kubuntu have way more stuff on top). I moved to xrandr later after searching for options and I did select "Ignore" when KDE asked me to configure and just went ahead with xrandr. The same still happens.
Thanks, I hope I gave the right information.
EDIT: Adding some extra information. I tried rebooting with the CRT cable connected. When the kernel initiated its loading, the messages only appeared on the external monitor. It was afterwards (it was pretty quick, but I will assume it was when radeon's modeset hit) that the external monitor went blank again and, in that situation, the laptop's monitor went blank (so none of the two monitors worked... and I was so hopeful!)

  • [W520] DisplayPort to dual outputs for 3 external monitors

I just discovered DisplayPort dual output adapters.  Example:
DisplayPort to dual DisplayPort, Lenovo brand.
DisplayPort to dual HDMI (currently out of stock).
Currently I'm using my laptop display plus two external monitors with one using VGA and the other using DisplayPort for three displays total.  Could I use one of these dual adapters to use three external monitors (plus laptop display) for four total displays?  All displays would be 1920x1080 or less.
    W520 i7-2720QM | 32 GB RAM 1333 MHz | FHD 1920x1080 | Quadro 1000M | Windows 7 & Ubuntu 14.04
    Crucial M500 480GB mSATA + 2 x 1 TB Hitachi Travelstar 7200 rpm | BIOS 1.38

Hi, just wanted to bump this thread because I have the same question (hope that's okay).
    I currently have:
    W520 screen
    External 1080p monitor
    External 1080p monitor
I'm hoping to keep those three displays but add a 1080p TV screen via an HDMI out. I would use the dual Displayport adapter noted above and a displayport-HDMi adapter I already have for the TV out.
If it is possible, would I be looking at a duplicate screen situation, or could I potentially extend my desktop past the three screens for totally new real estate?
    Thanks all!

  • Touch on non-primary external monitor controlling primary external monitor

SP3i5 connected to two external touch monitors (AcerT232HLs) via minidisplay on dock to hdmi on monitor2 and minidsply to hdmi on monitor3 and usb3s from dock to each monitor.  SP3 is monitor1. Displays work fine.  Touch works fine.
HOWEVER, touch on monitor2 control monitor3 display.  monitor3 is set as the primary monitor.  I get that this is NOT a bug since each monitor is in effect two device (display and touch) AND since most touch input devices WOULD want to control
    the primary display.
So either there is a setting somewhere to explicitly redirect the touch on monitor2 away from the primary and TO display of monitor2 or there is a driver issue.
In W8.1 I believe there was a setting as part of the 'touch tablet' settings where you would monitor by monitor go through a click process to say that the touch should control the display on its own monitor.  I can't find that in w10 (maybe it's all
supposed to happen automatically? or maybe it just hasn't been gotten to yet?)

Yesterday I found the same problem. I disconnected from a Dell Projector and then later that night I noticed that my computer still showed two monitors. I'm still able to connect to an external monitor and it will detect it. However, immediately after disconnect the phantom display is back.
A little annoying because I'm always having application windows open on that phantom display.
Also I noticed that when I plugged into the projector the color was off significantly, as if there was a bad connection. I tried a variety of connectors and connected my laptop to a variety of different external monitors and all of them work flawless except for the Dell Projector. (I didn't try it on another projector because I only have the one.)
My conclusion is somehow when I disconnected from the projector I hadn't fully shut down or gone to sleep or my computer was in the middle of a disconnect when I closed the lid and this interruption as my computer transitioned from 2 displays to 1 created the phantom display. Hope to see a solution to this.
    Thanks

  • Monitoring via 2nd / external monitor

Is there a way to have playback to a second / external monitor?
It seems like an obvious feature for an on-set tool, but I can't seem to find it. I have one monitor facing me with the main program controls, and a second monitor which would face the client / director and just show the video that is either being captured or played back. It would be similar in concept to the playback settings in Premiere, where you can have it use a video overlay to take over another monitor or external DV device to make it a fullscreen playback feed.
I also tried working around this by using Premiere's capture for the same effect. No dice. Premiere only allows it in timeline playback, not capture.
    Anyone?
    Thanks very much in advance.

OnLocation CS4 does not support sending video out to a second monitor. You're far from the first to request it, so rest assured that that capability is on our radar. I'll add a vote for you.

  • IMac bad monitor. Bought external monitor, how do you shut off main?

I am one of the poor unfortnuate masses that have a bad iMac monitor - the one with all the lines going down it. Bad pixels. Sheesh.
I bought a HP 20 external monitor and hooked it up, it's working fine.
QUESTION: Am I able to shut down the main monitor down without affecting the external monitor? If so, how?
No sense in having both monitors working.
    As always, thanks in advance!

There is no way to turn off the iMac's monitor, however there is a way to dim it to black like Dave suggests using Shades.

  • Mac Monitor settings, no external monitor

I'm a few months away from buying an external monitor and my videos are looking much different on a TV than on my 24" mac monitor. I have a NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT graphic cards. How would you all suggest I get as much color/ brightness accuracy as possible when editing with just a Mac monitor? Where should my brightness be?
    Thanks!

Your Mac's computer monitor will never be able to accurately reproduce NTSC colors and gamma.
However, you could use a Matrox MXO.

  • Can older dual core iMac be external monitor to new (lion) imac

If yes, how do they need to be connected and configured?

Thanks, classic II for the reply.  You are right--I should consider configuring my old Mac to be a wireless device if/when I get a new iMac, however I still would need my flash drive to have embroidery designs on it in order to get the designs into xp under bootcamp.
It was painful for me to get my dual core iMac upgraded to 1 meg for snow leopard.  I could drive 50 miles to an authorized apple person, leave my iMac and he would order and install the 2 gig memory and in addition charge me $300 to fix the cd drive that was barely off warranty or do what I did.  Local apple store would install a half Meg of memory but couldn't do the ordering.  So I ordered 500 meg memory from on line apple store, had it shipped to my house, and then had apple store install it--to get me to 1 Gig, so I could install snow leopard--I think the apple store installed it for no charge since I ordered the memory from on line apple store, and didn't have to drive 50 miles, one way--twice.
What I have is working for me, so I guess I'll just watch what happens with lion and icloudI and apple tv (and bernina v6 software which only runs under windows7 on macs) and move on to new iMac when things are settled.

  • MBP 15" 2007 with internal monitor off, main monitor signal on external monitor

My MBP 15" 2.2 2007 2 MB RAM NVIDIA GeForce 8600 internal monitor has no video after startup.  If I connect my Apple Cinema Display to it, the video of the main monitor is on it, and the internal screen stays off.  If I hit the "Detect displays" switch, nothing happens.  I have tried the following:  reset PRAM and NVRAM, reset SMC, repair permissions using Mac OS X Lion Disk Utilities, and Onyx software as well.  I have also formatted the MBP and reinstalled MAc OS, and the problem persists.  Can anybody help?  Many thanks in advance

  • Thinkpad T420 with Dock 4338 Dual External Monitors won't work

    Hey Everyone,
I recently purchased a T420 with Dock Model 4338 and am trying to connect two external monitors.  I want to have my desktop visible on my primary monitor with laptop closed and that desktop extended onto my second external monitors.  Both external monitors are Dell 19", one is being ran through the VGA port on the dock and the other is a VGA cord that I put a VGA to DVI-D adapter on to run off of one of the DVI Ports on the dock.  I can get my desktop to display on the main external monitor, and everything detects the other monitor fine, but the extended monitor remains black.  The screen is on, and recognized as the button light on the monitor is green not yellow and i can scroll my mouse over to that window and i lose the mouse so it's extending just not visible.  I have made sure that both monitors work by checking each individually in the VGA port and they are operational, but the DVI-D port doesn't seem to work on my second monitor.
I have done some pretty extensive searching and can't seem to get this to work.  At my job I have a T430 with the same dock and dual monitor setup that took no time and works great.  Does the T420 just not support this?
    All help is appreciated.
    Thank you all,
    NickG

DVI-D don't support passive dvi to VGA adapter. You are better off with a displayport to VGA adapter, as they are cheaper then a dvi-d to VGA converter.

  • If external monitor is placed above laptop screen, dock won't appear on external monitor

I've just migrated from PC to Mac and I've found something that drives me crazy.  The dock won't appear on my external monitor if the external monitor is placed directly above the MacBook Air built in display.  At home. I plug in my external monitor into my MacBook Air, place my laptop on my physical desktop just below my elevated external monitor.  My MacBook Air is open and I use its keyboard and its display, but my main display is my external monitor. I configured displays to match the physical arrangement:
Darn:  the DOCK REFUSES to appear on the "main screen"!!  This drives me crazy -- this did not happen in Windows!  The task bar obeyed my "main display" setting.
I can get the dock to appear on the main screen if I tell Mavericks of an arrangement that suits Mavericks -- somewhat side-by-side, as follows:
Now the dock shows up on my external monitor which I'd identified as my main screen before all these shenanigans.
The problem with the workaround is that the mouse does not track correctly between monitors so it's not an acceptable workaround.
Does anybody have any ideas on how to work around this for real?

Try booting your laptop normally, and then plug in the external monitor when the computer has fully logged in (or when it's waiting at the login screen). Does the problem still happen when you do that?

  • Yosemite dual external monitors not recognized?

I upgraded my Macbook Air this morning to Yosemite 10.10 from Mavericks.  Now, my Mac only recognizes one of my two external monitors. By this I mean that only one of my two external monitors appears in the Arrangement tab of the Display settings dialog box.  This setup worked previously under Mavericks though the mouse motion was jerky on the USB monitor.  Is this a bug or does Yosemite not support 2 external monitors?  The external monitor that works for Yosemite is connected through the DVI port.  The one that no longer works is connected through a USB port via an HDMI to USB adapter.  I've rebooted my Mac and the monitor several times and tried the second USB port on my Mac.  Both monitors are Samsung though they are different models. Suggestions?

Same issue - but I fixed it! I had the same issues with my MBP while running Mavericks. I tried updated to Yosemite (my co-worker runs Yosemite and has no monitor issues) to no avail. It still did not want to acknowledge any external monitors. Finally I did away with the HDMI connections altogether. I bought to DVI to Thunderbolt cords (Cable Matters, Gold Plated) from Amazon and BOOM! Fixed. Both monitors fire right up every time I plug it up.
I know its not a real fix...its still an issue that Apple needs to address, but it seems to be a great way to get around it until they do. Ive been using these cables for a couple of weeks now and still rocking. I hope this helps someone!

  • GS70 Stealth Pro Crashes when using external monitor..

    Hi Guys,
I just bought a GS70 ghost pro a few weeks ago and have been loving it, no problems, running Battlefield 3 and watchdogs..
However I just bought an external monitor, Asus VG248QE, when i connected it via display port and tried to play Battlefield 3 on the external monitor the laptop crashed - both screens blank- fan on- power button went orange- had to hold down the power button to reset.
Tried it again, opened Bf3 in window mode, put it on external monitor, went to full screen - it played ok for a few minutes then the laptop crashed again..
I had played bf3 no problems on the laptop screen previously.
Anyone got any ideas what might be going on? I'm new to gaming on pc so I'm a bit lost, any suggestions would be welcome.
    Thanks,
    Dan

  • T61 External Monitor Port Failure Question

I have a Lenovo T61 8897-cto (purchased 4/2008) with what I believe is a failing backlight.  In dim environments I can still see the screen.  I've  been temporarily using an external monitor, but the external monitor just went blank and I can't get it back, (the external monitor works fine with another laptop which I'm using now).  My question is, does this new fault point to a system board failure?   I suppose it could be a connector but I don't move the system often and not recently.  The only other things that comes to mind is that the battery is dying and only has 50% of its capacity left, (but I always run it with the AC cable plugged in).
I'm just wonder if it is worth putting any money into this laptop or to parts it out.  I've already ordered a replacement W510 which I should get in under 2 weeks. I was thinking about using the T61 as a backup or dedicated to Ubuntu, but I can buy a used one for under $600 so I don't want to dump $400 into to have it repaired.
Any suggestions/prior experience with failing LCD displays and external video port?

1400x1050 is the highest screen resolution, so I guess that is SXGA+ No, I've never spilled anything on the laptop. I'm running Windows Vista Pro latest Service Pack. I rebooted the system this morning and the external display was detected and used during the boot process. It started to work again under Windows. I'm starting to think that it was some sort of power saving mode that failed to re-initialize. The main laptop screen is still dim, but readable in a dark room. It does have a bit of a tint to it, which I've read is an indicator of a failing backlight. I've checked the warranty on the Lenovo website and they've indicated that it has expired.

  • External Monitor Shows Only Black Screen ??

Recently, my PowerBook G4 12" stopped working properly with my external monitor. My external monitor is a Dell 2005FPW that is connected to my laptop via a mini-DVI adapter, a VGA cable to the VGA port on the 2005FPW. When connected to the laptop, the 2005FPW goes black; otherwise, the monitor shows it's "rest" screen which is a bouncing color bar.
This system has worked without problems for years. I changed nothing in the configuration and (possible red herring) the only "event" prior to the problem developing was that I installed the "Security Update 2008-005 (PowerPC) v 1.0".
I have confirmed that the monitor and VGA cable are working with my wife's laptop.
Today, I replaced the mini-DVI to VGA adapter, and the problem hasn't gone away.
    Any suggestions?
    Michael

Did it develop around the same time, after you downloaded the security update?
