Dual Netboot Server

I have two identical servers with the following hardware specs that will be used as Netboot servers to support about 100 clients concurrently, and I want to know what my options are to make it as fast and reliable as possible. Any suggestions would be highly appreciated.
Xserve (2009)
OS: 10.6.8
CPU: 2.93GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
RAM: 6GB
Storage: One 160GB and two 1TBs
RAID Card: Yes
Ethernet Interface: 2
Network: Cisco Catalyst 2900 series switches
Questions:
Can I have both servers run netboot on the same subnet?
What are my options for load balancing?
Which RAID Set is better?
Thank you in advance!

Hi
"Can I have both servers run netboot on the same subnet?"
Yes.
"What are my options for load balancing?"
Assuming I've understood you correctly and if you're only referring to the NetBoot Service, you have to create nbis with the 'image will be served from more than one server' option enabled. If you already have nbis created and you did not enable the option you'd have to re-create them again. I could be wrong but I don't think you can enable that option retrospectively?
In my experience NetBoot works 'best' if the NetBootSP0 folder is stored on a non system drive.
"Which RAID Set is better?"
RAID 1 - Mirror is one option assuming you want redudancy?  There's no real performance 'hit' with NeBoot as apart from storing nbis, you're not really doing much else. For performance RAID 0 - Stripe. There'd be no redundancy and if a drive was to fail there's a real risk of losing all the data. You'd have to factor in a backup strategy which would involve extra hardware. You should be thinking about doing this anyway as a RAID is not a backup. If you want a blend of Performance and Redundancy, RAID 5 would be the other option given the hardware you have. You would lose - with the drive capacities listed - capacity if you chose this option.
Create Virtual Bonds on both XServes if the Switch supports Port Aggregation/Trunking.
Gigabit to Desktop is preferred as 10/100 struggles once you get beyond 24 clients in my experience.

  • Dual-homed server to two Cat4948 switches

    Hello everyone,
I have a picture above which I want to realize. The main point is a dual-homed server connected to two switches.
At server OS needed to configure NIC teaming which uses LACP. But how I can do it at Catalyst 4948?
Which technology I able to use to multi-switch etherchannel?
If I need one more link between Cat4948, then I can do.

The exact load sharing options available to you will probably depend on the server type / vendor. The settings are applicable to the Network Adapters but you usually use the configuration utility provided by the respective vendor. I would suggest you do a quick google search on your particular server model. An example is:

  • Two NetInstall/NetBoot Server

    Hello,
i have a NetBoot Server for diagnostic purpose in my network, works great. Now i would like to setup a MacMini with two ethernet interfaces (built-in and USB-Interface) to use it for NetInstall and make a own subnet.
    The Setup looks like this.
en0 (bulit in) has got a static IP Adress in the network and can access the internet (192.168.80.11)
en4 (USB-Ethernet) is running DHCP Server and Netinstall (192.168.70.0/24) -> Netboot works but Clients have no internet acces (tried different DNS settings)
If i turn on Internet sharing, the second interface is not available anymore for NetInstall so that is no solution?
Anyone got a setup like this and knows how to get it running?

The problem is the MTU. The MTU must be 1500 to works with Intel. Whe? Not having Idea.....

  • ACE: Problem dual proccesor server predisctor least-load and 2 oids

    Hello,
I have a problem, I have configured predictor least-loaded and probe snmp in ACE, My Servers are dual core proccesor. the oids are:
    oid .1.3.6.1.2.1.25.3.3.1.2.1 and oid .1.3.6.1.2.1.25.3.3.1.2.2
In 1 context (integracion1) I configured oid .1.3.6.1.2.1.25.3.3.1.2.1 and the other context (integracion2) I configured oid .1.3.6.1.2.1.25.3.3.1.2.2 and the results was positive, but when I configure 2 oid in integracion2 the output says FAILED, I need sense 2 proccesors to balance. how can do it? when I configure .1.3.6.1.2.1.25.3.3.1.2 (2 proccesors) the output says FAILED
    I attachment 3 configurations
    Best Regards

when you use multiple oid's on a probe , you need to manually configure the weight and make sure weights add up to 16000 so your probe should be configured as follows:
    probe snmp test-server
    interval 4
    faildetect 2
    passdetect interval 10
    receive 2
    community public
    oid .1.3.6.1.2.1.25.3.3.1.2.1
    threshold 75
    weight 8000
    oid .1.3.6.1.2.1.25.3.3.1.2.2
    threshold 75
    weight 8000

  • Dual homed server to dual homed Nexus fabric extenders

I don't see anything in Cisco docs that explicitly say that this is a supported setup so I just wanted to see if anyone here has any insight on this.
Is it supported to dual home a server via etherchannel to a pair of Nexus fabric extenders that are themselves dual homed two a pair of Nexus 5Ks?
    Thanks!

If i understand correctly i think what you are referring to is Enhanced vPC. See this link for details -

  • No Checkboxes  Under Netboot (Server Admin)

After doing a server restore, the Netboot pane in Server Admin (on 10.5.8) no longer displays *any* checkboxes, either for ports, or for locations.
What config files can Imodify to repair this?
Some config file must be corrupt, and if I knew what to change, I could fix it, but I cannot find this problem elsewhere.
Ethernet is working everywhere else, so it isn't that.
My Other 10.5 server displays Eth0, Eth1, and FireWire.

That was one of the first things that I tried to do. I tried it again today, just to be certain, and all it did was entirely frag my network.
I have tried three different boot volumes, removed the PCI-X FC card (as apple sayd 'Do Not Use' for Intel XServes: I'm not sure why), tried installing Server Admin v10.5.7 (individual download), which only caused SA to crash constantly, re-applied the 10.5.8 v1.1 update, that seemingly fragged other prefs, and now am re-cloning the main boot volume from the backup I made prior to messing with it today, as I can now no longer even load localhost. :/
Thank goodness for routine system imaging.
    **None of this did anything.**
My PPC G5 XServe Netboot works, but the Netboot optipons on the 2008 Intel are still MIA.
I also tried to rempte view the server via SA on the G5, and the ports aren't visible from there either.
I ran a drive with a much older backup, from when I am certain that NetBoot was working. I zapped the Pram six more times, and I'm at a loss here to explain the cause. I thought it could have been due to instal;ling the PCI-X FC card, but that doesn't seem to be true. For the record, I think that the FC card (PCI-X version) *was* working, although I can't prove that, and I don't know why Apple says not to use it on Intel models with a PCI-X slot.
No install that I have, current or backup, will shpw any ports or discs for Netboot, at all. My last resort wi;ll be to try a cleanm install on anopther volume, after I finish restoring this disc image, and see if that shpws the ports. If a clean install does not show ports for NB, than I am totally lost on what else I could do, as it will have to be some kind of bizarre HW problem.
I will have to verify if I have any FW devices plugged into the system. I believe I unplugged them, but I've done so much on this one problem that it's making my head spin.

  • Dual Screen // Server 2012 rdp // wyse

New server installed with 2012 and hyper-v on it. On our old server SBS 2011 (2008r2) our wyse terminals with dual screen worked allright. But now on the new server the rdp connection sees the dual screened wyse as on big screen. Which is pretty annoying.
What did I do wrong? Do you have some suggestions. (Wyse V10L 2 dvi)

    Hi,
Which version of client RDP and OS you are using for thin clients?
Did you found any particular Event ID during this issue?
This issue might occurs if the vendors cannot able to support RDP client which you are using with server 2012. As OS in the VM combined with the RDP version on your thin client together will determine the capabilities.
I can suggest you to use RDP client v 8.0 to connect from wyse thin client. In addition you can check whether it’s not restricted by number of monitors. You can refer below link and snapshot for more information.
Using Multiple Monitors in Remote Desktop Session (applies to Windows Server 2012 & 2012 R2)
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/rds/archive/2009/07/01/using-multiple-monitors-in-remote-desktop-session.aspx
    Hope it helps!

  • GLBP and dual NIC server

Hi, I'm testing GLBP across a VLAN on a pair of layer 3 6500 server farm collapsed access/distribution switches. ie the VLAN is routed locally and via dual L3 uplinks to the core. The server is a dual NIC compaq server in active/active mode. Seems to work fine, can anyone see any potential issues? rgds

GLBP is a stable feature and you should not have any problems inplementing it. As long as the configuration is correct and the design has been properly understood the GLBP implementation will work fine.

  • Define Primary IP on dual homed server

    Hi
    I have a server with 2 NIC i different VLAN's, lets say:
    Hostname: Server1
    Domain: domain.local
    NIC1 IP: 10.10.10.1 (Domain VLAN)
    NIC2 IP: 10.10.11.1 (DMZ VLAN)
When I'm logged on this server and I do "ping server1.domain.local -4" the answer comes from IP 10.10.11.1 But I need the answer to come from 10.10.10.1
I have disabled that NIC2 registres in DNS, and disabled LMHOSTS and NetBIOS over TCP.
I have been to the advanced menu in "network connections" and arranged so the domain net NIC is on top, and I have restarted.
How can I define IP 10.10.10.1 to be the IP address it answers on, when server1.domain.local is trying to be reached, from the server itself?
    Regards Lars

    Hi Lars,
According to your description, the goal is when we use ping server1.domain.local command in the server, we can receive the responses from 10.10.10.1.
In order to achieve this goal, we could add a entry (10.10.10.1    server1.domain.local) in the hosts file.
Host name resolution generally uses the following sequence:
The client checks to see if the name queried is its own.
The client then searches a local Hosts file, a list of IP address and names stored on the local computer.
Domain Name System (DNS) servers are queried.
If the name is still not resolved, NetBIOS name resolution sequence is used as a backup. This order can be changed by configuring the NetBIOS node type of the client.
So if there is an entry for a domain name in the Hosts file, then the server will not attempt to query DNS servers for that name. Instead, the IP address that is configured in the Hosts file will be used.
In addition, if we ping server1 from the other client in the domain vlan, we will receive response from the 10.10.10.1. And if we ping server1 from the 10.10.11.x network segment, we will receive response from the 10.10.11.1.
    Best Regards,
    Tina

  • Problem with a dual Identity Server

    Hi!
We are currently deploying MS 6.0p1. We have two servers for Identity Server and Directory Server is replicating its database on both machines. Problem that we have is that on second Identity Server we can not log on with simple user name but with this "uid=admin, ou=people, dc=domain, dc=com". On first server we can log on with simple user name.
    Any ideas?

Found the log, but the log does not tell much!

  • Intel PRO/1000 Pt Dual Port Server Adapter (EXPI9402PT) on TS140

    Hello,
Recently, I purchased TS140 server (Xeon) and tried to install Intel EXPI9402PT adapter into the system.  When I installed the card, the system just hung on "ThinkServer" logo.  I first thought that the card was bad so I tested on my other desktop and I verified that the card was recognized and working properly.
I was searching my issue on the Internet and I found that there are subjects regarding "BIOS whitelist" which limits only to Lenovo brand devices.  Is it true to TS140 server also?  And, the server only supports I350-T2 or T4 ethernet cards?
    Thanks,
    Solved!

That is potentially bogus claim. Non-validated doesn't mean not working, just Lenovo didn't test them. BTW if that was true, cheap realtek NIC should lock up server too, but it does not ...

  • Snow Leopard Server Netboot not working

    Hello all,
I have been trying to build a Netboot server for a week now and it seems that I am doing something wrong. I have a MacPro tower running Snow Leopard Server 10.6.8. It seems all of my services are running correctly. I Installed Snow Leopard 10.6.8 on a client computer and configured it the way I need it. for testing purposes it is connect directly to the Server computer via Eehternet. I created the netboot image using the server image tool from the client hardrive in multiple ways
-from the cleint using the server tools and Server Image untility
-from the server using the Server Image Utility and the client in target mode.
I move the image into /Library/Netboot/NetBootSP0 ( this path was created by the server )
I can see my Netboot image on the client as a bootable disk, I select it and it just hangs on the silver Apple and spinny wheel. Below are the logs it generated. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

  • No Entry Sign when trying to netboot new MacMini to Mountain Lion Server

My company just purchased a new MacMini i5 2.5 GHz and I am trying to netboot it to my Mountain Lion Server 10.8.2 but I am getting the No Entry sign when it tries to boot to the server.  I tested my other Mac computers that are in my environment and they are able to netboot to the server fine.  It just seems to be an issue with this latest Mac Mini.
As part of my troubleshooting, I created a new netrestore image from the new Mac Mini using System Image Utility on the Mountain Lion Server.  The server successfully created it and I set it as the new default image in the NetBoot server.  After taking these steps, I am still getting a No Entry sign.
I checked the log on the server to see what is happening when it tries to boot and this is what is displays:

    I'm seeing the same behavior with a new Late 2012 Macmini6,2 (2.3GHz quadcore i7).
I have a lab with several variants of minis up through the last generation.  One of those minis is a NetBoot/DeployStudio server.  I have it hosting a 10.8.2 NetBoot image, which works for all of the other lab minis but this new one.
I have tried 3 different methods for NetBoot:
Holding the 'N' key at boot
Holding option and seeing my NetBoot disk in the selectable options
Booting into the restore partition and selecting my NetBook disk from the Startup Disk preference pane
All 3 options result in what is described above - the Ghostbusters (minus the ghost) no entry sign.  My particular mini then shuts itself down shortly thereafter.
My NetBoot server log looks similar to the above, where my BSD INFORM messages have sysid=Macmini6,2.
I have confirmed that - on the restore partition at least - the shipping OS on the new mini 6,2 is 10.8.1.  It's likely a custom edition for this new hardware.  It's possible that a component of a 10.8.3 update would fix it, but I'm unfortunately leaning toward this being an EFI firmware issue.  I've noted on another site that these minis seem to have issues with VMware's ESXi, where the suggested course of action will be an Apple firmware update: http://communities.vmware.com/thread/423099
As the lab is hoping to purchase 40 of these systems, NetBoot support is rather critical.

  • Using iPhoto to make books with NetBoot on an apple server in computer la

I teach an artist book course at NKU. We have an intel imac lab that serves up the software over a NetBoot system on the network from an xServe. We are using iPhoto to make our books. Our problem is that students cannot save their books to work on for more than one class period because they cannot write back to the server and each time the computer restarts, a pristine set of software is loaded onto each computer. I discovered there is no way to save a book. We can drag the library off and save it but we cannot do that with the book which makes is virtually impossible for my students to do their assignment. In iMovie, you can save your project onto an external drive. With Keynote, you can save your project onto an external drive, but with iPhoto, you cannot save your book onto an external drive to complete as time permits. Do you have any help for me? iMac Intel Mac OS X (10.4.8) netBoot serves programs onto lab computers over the network

    Barbara:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. What if the student has a USB flash drive with his library folder on it. Could he run that library with the iPhoto application that's on the server? Each student would have to import the photos from the main library to his flash library and run it from there. To get iPhoto to switch libraries you launch it with the Option key depressed and, when asked, navigate to the library you want to use and select it. As long as the libraries don't have many, many photos a 1 or 2 G flash drive would work. If a student had their own portable FW or USB hard drive they could use that also. Unfortunately that involves additional hardware. Might not be that big an issue for today's students as they are much more technologically advanced that we are in so many ways.
Not familiar with servers that's the only way I can think of for each student to have their own library, pictures and keep it for him/herself. Good luck.
