Dual Radeon video card -- Second card Unknown/4th monitor

My initial plan was to use four monitors on my Radeon HD 6790 as follows:
1 Single-link DVI-D = monitor1 dvi
1 Dual-link DVI-I = monitor2 dvi
1 Display Port = monitor3 dvi with adapter
1 HDMI = new monitor
This did not work as I could not use the hdmi port with the second dvi plugged in so I decided to buy a second cheaper ati card (the 6450) to power the fourth monitor. Well of course that did not work as well since the 2nd video card was identified as UNKNOWN via the Ctalyst control Center(amdcccle).
This is how I currently have my monitors plugged in:
6790 (Main card):
  1x dvi
  1x dvi via DisplayPort
  1x hdmi
6450 (Secondary card):
  1x dvi
I tried for two days to get the second card identified by the Catalyst driver and I ended up borking my system in the process. So now I am on week two of getting this setup to work with no avail so I decided to post a new thread.
Here is some relevant information that may help:

Notice the fourth monitor is labeled as "1-Default monitor" instead of hdmi (or whatever) and the second card is not listed.
I am literally at my wit's end trying to figure this out. So basically I am wondering if anyone has a clue where to begin trying to get the 2nd video card identified or is it even possible with the current Catalyst driver? I know my hardware can power it fine as it works perfectly on my Windows gaming partition.
Thanks in advance

I have it working now using catalyst-total but with separate X sessions on each monitor. Not the ideal setup but it works for now.

I had to manually edit my xorg.conf and add the values for the second video card/fourth monitor. I cannot figure out how to take a screenshot of all 4 X sessions so here is a picture of the setup:

  • X800 XT Radeon video card artifact

    Hi,
I just purchased a used radeon X800 XT card, and when I installed it, there was all kinds of screen artifact.
It's version 1.09, and the PN is 109-A35803-00.
I read about the problems with these cards, but this wasn't the part number listed.
Any ideas on how this may be fixed, or do I need to return the card?
The light in the bottom corner is just my table lamp!

    Thanks for the info!
Here's something funny that happened this morning.
I fix up PC's and donate them when I have time.  I've had this particular Dell XPS sitting in my front room for about 2 years.  I wasn't sure if I was going to donate it or fix it up and keep it.  It had a note on it about the video card fan being bad - it still spins, but it howls while doing it.  I pulled the card and here's what I found: "Radeon X850 PRO 256MB".  If I decide to forefit the ADC port, or if I can find an adaptor for a reasonable price, is this card flashable to work on my Mac?
Second question - I have been looking with no success for a temp monitor for ATI Mac cards.  Anything that I have tried does not register the GPU fan or temp.
Thanks for all of the help and ideas so far!

  • How do I replace an ATI Radeon video card on my MacPro?

The ATI Radeon x1900 video card on my MacPro is failing. I need to replace it with a new/used model. Has anyone ever done this and if so, can you recommend a reliable source for a replacement card, AND, do you know where I can find instructions on how to replace the card? Thank you.

Happy to hear that. Good luck!

  • Best dual DVI video card for 2009 MP running Windows

Sorry if this question has been posted before, or if I'm in the wrong forum. I searched the Windows Compatibility forum and didn't find the answer.
I have a 2009 Mac Pro (8 core) running Windows Server 2008 64 bit. I would like to upgrade the stock GT120 video card. I don't play games on it, but I do need to drive a pair of 24" widescreen LCD monitors at 1920x1200 or higher and extend the desktop onto the second monitor.
I see that the 8800GT (Apple part MB137Z/A) is still available, although Apple is pushing the ATI 4870. Does anyone know which of these cards would work the best with Windows?
    Thanks!

Thanks Hatter. I thought the video card had to have special EFI firmware in order for the Mac Pro to even recognize it as a video card (regardless of which OS's are installed).
Are you saying that if I'm only running Windows, I can use ANY PCI-Express video card? Sweeeeeet!
Now, for cards that ARE available in a specific Mac version (such as the GTX285 and ATI 4870), are they as well supported in Windows as they are in Mac OS (from a driver point of view)? I suppose other than the MAC-specific firmware, the graphics chipset for both versions of the card are the same, therefore the drivers should be the same.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Which dual DVI video card for Mac Pro?

We just got a Mac Pro at work with a single DVI port video card. Want to use 2 monitors, but don't want to order an incompatible card. Don't need screaming performance, just a stable setup for a sprawling desktop with some applications running low-res/low-frame-rate animation.
One Evga card that looked like about the right specs was shown on MacMall's site as 'platform: universal' but the manufacturer's site specifed Windows and Vista. Called MacMall and tech support said it wasn't supported. So, now I'm suspicious.
Anyone have a list of decent cards that will work? Would like to keep it at or under $100.

You could just add an adapter, though not everyone is happy with that, for your 2nd port on the GT120.
Could wait for Nvidia eVGA GTX 285 Mac Edition next month.

Hi everybody and thanks for your very useful suggestions!
I have the following hw configuration:

     - 700 Mhz AMD Athlon Thunderbird processor
     - S3 Savage4 AGP Video card with 32 Mb RAM
     - 256 Mb PC133 RAM
I'd like to buy an ATI Radeon 9200 (or ATI Radeon 9600) AGP 8x video card with 128 Mb RAM. Now, I know that my MoBo can support only 4x AGP video cards, but I read somewhere that, in any case, it works properly.
    Is it right?
I looked for this question in the forum but nothing found.
    Thanks a lot
    Bye

    Thanks Grayone.
Well I still don't know which card to buy, basically because I was not so sure if there is hardware compatibility between video-card and MoBo.
I will keep in mind your driver suggestions.
Did you hear about someone that have already installed one of the two cards (ATI Radeon 9200 or ATI Radeon 9600) on a K7T-PRO MSI-6330 Mother board?

  • Multiple Video Cards for 3 Monitor Display

I'm in the process of creating a large multiscreen presentation (3 screens). I need an application (will probably be authored in Director or Flash) to span all three screens. Each screen will have a resolution of 1280 x 720. I am looking into what the best solution is for this.
    One Quad head card?
Two video cards, one dual head, one normal?
    Three video cards?
I've heard with PCs that if you have multiple video cards, you can't run a fullscreen application across video cards. Does the same hold true for Macs?
    Any suggestions?

I'm having a hard time figuring this out. It seems as though people on this forum have been playing games across all three monitors. However, I just went to the big glass Mac store in NYC and asked a few people at the "genius bar." The guy I talked to was very skeptical of running a fullscreen application across video cards. Another guy I talked to said it was application dependent. They had no MacPros with dual head cards, so I couldn't check its settings.
If anyone can out genius the genius bar and give me a solid answer, I'd be greatly indebted. I'd like to get an answer before spending 5 grand on a system.

  • 128MB vs. 256MB Video Card for External Monitor?

I may want to run an external monitor for Final Cut Pro HD. Will getting the 2.16 Processor with its 256MB Video Card drive an external monitor any better than the 1.83 w/ 128MB Video Card? TIA
BTW, I won't be "gaming" at all. Just doing a little FCP HD...
    20 G5 iMac/2 GB RAM/250 GB HD   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

Randy, I believe you have great technical knowledge
(much more than me) and your math is unobjectionable.
But in my opinion 16% of the graphic card's capacity
just to light up the monitors is not a low figure.
Actually, for generic 2D stuff that doesn't involve OpenGL, Randy has it correct. You'll find that VRAM makes absolutely no difference to Photoshop, for instance. A couple of big screens will happily run on 64MB VRAM.
Once you start running pro applications on those
monitors, and expect real-time responsiveness and
lower and lower rendering times; you might come to
realize that 128MB of VRAM is enough, it's a lot...
    but not excessive.
You only need the extra VRAM for apps that specifically use the graphic card, through OpenGL, Core Image, Core Video or similar. Of course, there are more and more apps which leverage the graphics card this way, so 256MB is going to be more future-proof, and is what I went for.

  • PowerMac G5 2.0 dual processor video Card installation

I installed a Radeon7000 64M DDR AGP VGA/TVO/DVI-I card in my powerMac G5 2.0 dual processor.  I starts up with both screens fine, but freezes immediatley on startup.  I started up in Safe Mode and it was fine.  I repaired my permissions then Zapped the pram and it will start up fine and even got to adjust dual displays before it froze.  It will not start up and operate correctly.  I know Mac has the drive in its operating system. I am just frustrated because all I wanted to do was used an extra VGA screen that I have and the installed card only had one DVI and an Apple screen conector that I cannot get an adapter to VGA for.

Hello, are you sure that card can support 2 monitors your size?
I don't think that card suports core video or maybe even quartz, both essential for 10.5.x, but disabled in Safe Mode.
BTW, not sure what adapter is...

  • Inexpensive Dual-DVI video card for Cubase 6.5 & Adobe Premiere CS6, on Win7x64

I need a card for both and I can't find one that is "approved" for both. Is anyone using these two programs together? I'm currently using a pair of ATI FireGL V3350 cards that, so far, play video fine in Premiere (haven't done any editing or AE yet) but not in Cubase 6. I'm not a pro so a high end card would be lost on me. An inexpensive card that can handle standard editing in Premiere with some AE, no advanced 3-D (titles only?), and will also play video in Cubase 6.5 is what I'm looking for.
    Thanks in advance

hello, @ MD:  this should be fun:  i use Reason7
in the general forum there is a thread about mulitple monitors
some of the PPRO users here might get a kick out of this as well and/or have comments/advice
    here is most of it:
    CELTICDALE:
Hi! I`ve been using 3 screens for 7-8 years on 4 different systems.
This solution works on any system I can think of, laptop or desktop.
    Matrox TripleHead2Go (Digital Edition) (TH2Go)
It works by splitting the signal from 1 DVI or VGA port to 3 screens.
I just bougt a GTX690 which have 3 DVI ports, but I only use 1 with
the TH2Go because it works perfect without any hassle. The beauty
of it, compared to what others are suggesting, is that you can use
this whith whatever system you have, and you don`t have to by a new
solution (graphics card) if you upgrade. It`s external, so you can
easily move it to another computer. There are no fans and it gets
power from a USB port and use almost no power compared to an extra
gfx card. I also still have to free ports from my GTX690, allowing
me to add 2 more screens if I want.
If you hook it up to a laptop, you can use the laptop screen + up to 3
extra screens. I can run this on an 8 year old laptop I have, with no problems..
People who are suggesting that DVI is getting phased out, are wrong.
The worlds newest and fastest single GPU highend card comes with
2 DVI ports (GTX780, and is released tomorrow)
When I travel, it fits easily inside my laptop bag. Only thing I need
extra is the cables and adapters to hook up to different types of ports.

    Good luck!
PS. There are different models, with HDMI also, but I reccommend the
model I linked to, as you can just go with adapter if you want to
connect to HDMI and don`t need to send sound to the screen. In the
rare cases I connect sound to the screen, I just use a minijack cable.
But of cource, you know best what you need..
hope this helps in some way, cheers, j

  • Dual DVI video card

    Have a P7-1280t - i5-2320 QUAD 3.0GHZ 6GB
Would like to have a dual DVI setup since I have two monitors.  I had a Nvidia Qaudro card laying around...tried it but it's looking for that additional power source for the card and the powersupply doesn't have it.
What card is compatible with my new Desktop
    Thanks

You could just add an adapter, though not everyone is happy with that, for your 2nd port on the GT120.
Could wait for Nvidia eVGA GTX 285 Mac Edition next month.

There is/was and should be 8800GT with nice specs and dual monitor support.
Barefeats is a great resource of tests and benchmarks.
This gives a good idea of what cards and what to expect:

  • P55 GD65 support dual slot video cards?

    can anyone confirm this?

Yep, just make sure that you do not have any PCI cards on the next slot and you will have no problems fitting it in.

  • What is the best PC platform for LR 4? Especially optimum video card and amount of RAM?

I have a high end i7 Windows 7 64bit PC with 12GB ram and 3TB disks - some in RAID 0, yet LR sliders lag and image scrolling/rendering can take up to 5 seconds, which makes editing hundreds of images in a session a pain.
I am using an ATI Radeon video card and 27" monitor (2560x1440). I am prepared to buy any graphics card or even switch to an iMac, but want snappy LR performance.
What is the recommended setup, please?

Running LR in a window, approx 1400 x 900 made the sliders responsive and smooth!
My system drive, which is also the LR Catalog is RAID 0 and is 250MB/sec access, which is as good as I can get with SSD
I have an AT Radeon HD4800 video with latest driver
    I am running LR 4.1 RC2
I have tried exiting all non-essential programs, including AV (with internet disconnected) - made no difference
How much would I spend on a video card upgrade? Up to $750, however from what I am reading, LR doesn't use GPU acceleration so this is a waste of time and money.
I am going to try my i-7 MacBook Pro, driving the 27" monitor, as a comparison, and report back.
Thanks for all the responses so far. If you can add anything, please do so.
Are there any configuration guidlines to make LR quicker, anywhere?
My other band-aid is to manually transfer my project's raw files to the HDD, and then pre-view them with a fast browser, to weed out the rejects, before importing the rest into LR for editing and filing.
I looked some good programs, for this:
    PhotoMechanic ($150)
Seems to be the ultimate, and is both Mac and Windows, however price is difficult to justify.
    Breeze Browser Pro ($70)
Fast but pricy compared to LR with all its features, but may be a goer, considering the time it saves.
Fast Picture Viewer ($40 + $10 for code pack)
Also very fast, but no tree folder view, which I find limiting. Price is getting better.
    XNView (Free)
Good option. Bit slower than the paid apps, but still quite good.
    FastStone Image Vewer (Free)
Comparable to XNView, just a tad slower, but seems that development has been suspended. I did see a 64bit codepac though, which I hadn't look ed at.
There are too many more to list. Do any of you guys use anything like this?
