Duplicate iCal Items after 10.6.3 Update

After the latest software update to Mac OS X (10.6.3), I get duplicate items for everything in iCal (birthdays, holidays, events, etc). Anyone else having this problem and how do I delete all of the duplicates?

Days like this really make me question whether the Mac is indeed superior to Windows.
I've spent the last 4 hours recovering my calendars from this sync catastrophe. I keep about a dozen calendars in iCal (some are my own, others are subscriptions, a couple are CalDAV two-way links with Google Calendar). All of the calendars were replicated multiple times in iCal and on MobileMe - I had in excess of 150 items in my calendars list.
Some comments on how I've restored things so that hopefully others will not waste as much time as I have.
* First, shut off MobileMe sync. I don't plan on ever synchronizing my calendars through Apple services again. After previous troubles culminating in the current disaster, I don't believe this product is salvageable.
* Might be wise to disconnect from the Internet entirely while conducting surgery on your calendars. Several times, iCal somehow reconstructed files that I had explicitly deleted.
* Quit out of iCal before doing anything.
iCal files are in ~/Library/Calendars.
Delete the cache file in ~/Library/Calendars/Calendar Cache; also ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.iCal.
You need to use the command line for this.
Make a backup copy of your Calendars folder before following any of these instructions.
Each calendar is stored in a subfolder under ~/Library/Calendars. These folders are named with unique identifiers, like "F16776B1-14B9-428C-B6C9-4D240D894B3B.calendar". CalDAV subscriptions end with .caldav.
In each calendar folder there is an Info.plist file. Look at one of these files, towards the bottom you'll see: will include:
<key>Title</key>
<string>[CALENDAR TITLE HERE]</string>
Since we have replicated calendars, there will be many folders for calendars with the same title. So, given a calendar that you want to recover...
$ cd ~/Library/Calendars
$ CALS=`grep "CALENDAR TITLE" *.calendar/Info.plist|sed 's/\/.*//'|sort|uniq`
$ for x in $CALS; do echo $x; ls -l $x/Events | wc; done
You'll get a list of calendar folders with the number of events in each calendar.
One of these folders is the one you want to keep. Probably the one that has the most events. If there are several with the same number of events, they are probably all identical copies, so just pick one.
DELETE all the other folders except the one you want to keep.
Repeat the process for every other unique calendar.
When you're done, the number of .calendar folders in ~/Library/Calendars should be reasonable (in my case).
Check again that there are no cache files left in the ~/Library/Calendars folder.
Your calendars should now be repaired. Make another backup copy of the entire Calendars folder - because iCal has a tendency to "fix" things of its own accord, so the pollution could magically reappear later.
Start iCal. Things should be back to normal.
Watch out for mysterious processes called iCalExternalSync and Mingler consuming lots of CPU. I suspect that these are responsible for some of the calendar destruction insanity but I haven't caught them red-handed yet.
Good luck!

  • Weird file got added in Login Items after 10.5.8 Update

    Hi,
I finally got a chance to apply Leopard 10.5.8 combo update to my MacBook. After the update was done, the system was restarted, and I saw Safari was bouncing at startup. The page Safari opened was one of the help file pages in iTunes with Russian. I immediately opened the System Preferences and check Login Items in Accounts, and I found the a new entry in the list (I don't remember the exact path, but it should be pretty close):
    local://Applications/iTunes/contents/resources/ru_proj/help/pgs/15375.html
I was afraid that my machine might be infected by some virus or malware, of course I removed the entry right away, and wipe out the disk and restore my backup.
Has anyone seen this weird problem after applying the combo update? Your help is appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Don

    Thanks for the response!
I am sure I did not put it in there, so why the installer put that page in the list is a mystery then (especially a Russian page, and I don't use iTunes on this machine either). I am still worried if there was a virus on my machine.

  • Calendars in ical disappeared after 10.5.6 update

my calendars (4 calendars) and all my to-do item have disappeared from ical after I updated to 10.5.6. Not only that, but most of the items in the menu bar are grayed out so I can not create new events or new to do's. I deleted the com.apple.ical plist and I restored the calendar folder in user>library from time machine and it didn't work. I have added a new calendar item on my iphone and ical asked me to sync it on my macbook pro, but nothing is showing. Also, ical freeze every time I try to close it and I have to force quit.
    Thanks for any help.

No, at the time I am writing this the topic is not answered. Simply applying the 10.5.6 combo update did not work for me when I had this problem.
This did NOT work either - http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1906?viewlocale=en_US.
    This is what worked:
    0) make sure both iCal and Mail are closed, and it might not be a bad idea to temporarily shut off any syncing software you may have active
    1) start with the calendar folders from Tiger that are located in Users/{yourusername}/Library/Application Support/iCal/Sources, the ones with crazy names like "2E28E612-467E-4981-975E-D07A31AC39C4.calendar" which contain files" called "corestorage.ics," "Index," and "info.plist"; if "all" you have is an iCal backup library (.icbu file), then you can go to a Tiger machine, restore to that iCal, and then take the above calendar folders from it
    2) copy the calendar folders to the desktop of your Leopard machine
    3) read this thread (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1196389&tstart=0) down to the posts by Thierry Girard
    4) do what he says with the text editor, but you can use TextEdit, and look for either the SEQUENCE:-1 or the PRIORITY:-1. Set either one to just 1 (remove the negative sign); I had some value related to a MICROSOFT this or that, and I did not change it at all.
    5) take the edited calendar folders from your desktop and move them into /Users/{yourusername}/Library/Calendars
    6) start up iCal; at this point, I was in business
    I hope this is helpful.

  • Mail and iCal hang after 10.7.4. update

    Hi there,
I've update to 10.7.4, and ever since my iCal and Mail get the beach cursor - I've waited an hour and longer and then forced quit them, after that they work for a few minutes (Mail longer, iCal until you create or change an item). I realise that Spotlight is reindexing (since this morning, and still saying "estimating indexing time". Any suggestions for a cure?
    Thanks,
    Emanuel

Well I would recommend this solution if you have the following enabled.
As I had this issue with a client of mine.
The situation was the same as described, upon opening mail it took a long time for the program to respond and the colored wheel span for a while and then after a few moments the mail app started to responed.
    Solution:
If you use iCloud and you have backed up data, backed to icloud you will need to disable it.
after canceling icloud from the system mail started to respond right away upon launch.
If you find this helpful please replay.
    Thanks hope this helps.

  • Weird iCal bug after 10.4.8 update

After updating to Mac OS X 10.4.8 I get the following display bug with my iCal reminders, i.e. the reminder appears way off to the side of the screen. This happens on both of my machines:
    http://web.mac.com/csearles/iWeb/Site%202/Photos%202.html
    G 4 Cube   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Hello Chris.
Apparently noone at Apple cares enough to
    respond to this issue...
Sorry you and at least one other person are experiencing this problem but FYI - this is a user to user help forum only that is provided and moderated by Apple so it is a very rare when an Apple employee responds direct to a post or thread here.
Since I haven't experienced the same and this is the first I've seen such a problem reported, this issue may be caused by a problem with the iCal preference file.
Quit the iCal.app first and locate the iCal preference file in your Preferences folder at Home > Library > Preferences. Move the iCal preference file to the Desktop.
Launch iCal and check your iCal settings since all settings are stored in the preference file for the application.
If this resolves it, you can delete the old iCal preference file from the Desktop. If you can determine this doesn't resolve it before updating any preference settings, you can replace the new preference file created with the old preference file placed on the Desktop with the application quit before doing so.

  • Serious ical problems after 10.6.3 update

    dear forum,
since my update to 10.6.3 ical has serious problems.
right after the update ical reported that it had not the rights to access to the calendar cash file.
after some days this problem fixed itself. but since then ical has a very strange behavior:
the last event pops up at least every hour and i cannot make any changes in the calendar. e.g. when i delete an event it reappears a second later. despite of this the system update starts every day and i cannot change the frequency of updates in the system preferences.
    does somebody know any help?
    best wishes
    hans

    p.s.:
i just recognized that things are even worth. in addition to the ical problems safari does not remember any bookmark i made. after relaunch the new ones are gone, only the bookmarks i made before the 10.6.3 update remain there.
    spooky, isn't it?

  • Duplicate ical entries after upgrade to icloud

    Hi,
Have no idea why this has happened, but basically I have been syncing using itunes manually via a cable, got the email from Apple to upgrade, went through the process, now its all on icloud, but I have noticed I have dupliate ical entries.
what is the best way to sort this out now?

ok, I just used the app iCal Dupe Deletor and it found 500 dupes, went through and deleted them all
BUT.... when iCal updated to icloud, it just brought them all back from what I can see and they are all there again
whats the best fool-proof way of sorting this?
pleeeease there, so close but yet so far.....

  • Duplicate iCal entries after sync

My sister just bought a Verizon iPhone, and did a sync using iTunes. Her iPhone is fine. But her iCal now has duplicate entries for every date. First off, how do i clear all those out, and second, what do you think went wrong?

How long has she had the iPhone?
Did she sync the iPhone with iTunes right away before manually entering any calendar events on her iPhone, or did she manually enter a number of calendar events on her iPhone before syncing? If the latter, are only the calendar events she manually entered on her iPhone duplicated in iCal on her Mac? If so, how many calendar events was she able to manually enter on her iPhone before syncing with iTunes and iCal since she purchased the iPhone?
If iCal is used - iCal includes calendar events and so does the iPhone before the first sync for this data, a merge prompt should be provided with the first sync for this data. The other option is replacing whatever calendar events are available on the iPhone with what is available in iCal.
First step, reset the sync history on her Mac, which is done via iSync preferences with the iSync application.
Next, remove all duplicate calendar entries in iCal on her Mac. Certainly there can't be that many calendar entries that were manually entered on her iPhone before the first sync with iCal.
When iCal is cleaned up - all duplicates removed, under the Info tab for her iPhone sync preferences with iTunes below the Advanced section at the bottom, select Calendars for replace info on this iPhone. Select Apply followed by a sync.

  • ICal crashes after 10.6.3 update

When I open iCal, it says updating calendars. Then hangs. Shows as "not responding" and I have to force quit. I've tried repairing permissions, trashing plist files for iCal, and reinstalling iCal. Nothing has worked.

    Hi Al,
Well, it seems that at least one of my calendars is corrupted and if you attempt a normal “automatic” updating process, the whole thing fails. ICal quits (I have saved the report, but it didn’t help me).
I was able to get all of my calendars but one corrupted calendar over to the new iCal in 10.6.3 by reverting to my backup system, booting from 10.6.2 and exporting each calendar. They all appear to be OK on export.
Then I boot from 10.6.3, and first throw away all files that have to do with iCal found in the Library, Preferences, and Application Support folders. When you launch iCal it’s a fresh start. I could then import the calendars, and when importing into new iCal each is updated. It’s during that process that one of my calendars fails.
I’d love to know how I might “fix” that calendar, or what is wrong from the export, but all I know is that the error states: Import Failed: Multiple Validation errors occurred.
    So I too need help.
In your case, if you have a bootable system backup, and if all your calendars export and are not corrupted, you might be back on track in an hour or so.
    Good luck.
    So long for now, TOM

  • 4g ipod touch screen selects random items after 6.1.6 update

HELP!! Immediately after updating 4g ipod to 6.1.6- if i hold my finger on screen like you would to delete an app or to slide a list-- it randomly selects objects. So basically if my finger stays on the screen for longer than i millisecond to move object or something, random objects are selected. And the things selected are never in same area of screen. Example: So if i was to hold my finger on a letter on the keyboard to access a special character: the typing line would be something like "cc tskh   js" then it might hit enter then clear. So basically as long as a hold my finger on the screen it will just randomly do things. Hope that makes sense.

Make sure the screen is clean with no screen protector.
    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

Re: Macbook Pro 10.6.8 RAM Upgarde to 8 GB
The amount of RAM is not dependant on the operating system. It is all about the model of you Mac.
10.6.8 is the version of OS X that is installed on your system. It has no real baring on the amount of RAM that CAN be installed.
Personally I have never had good luck with Corsair RAM. I have always had good luck with Crucial and Kingston.

  • Update a list item after a task is completed

    Hi,
I have a sharepoint workflow, where I am creating a workflow and the workflow steps involves assigning a task. How do I Update a list item after the task is completed? So after the task assignment step, how do I check that the task is completed so I can
    update a list item?
    Please help.
    techie

    Hi,
According to your description, you might want to update a list item after a task is completed in SharePoint Designer workflow.
By default, the workflow will stuck at a “Assign a task” action. When the “Task Status” become “Completed”, other actions afterwards will go on.
Here is a demo about how to update a list item after a task is completed in my environment:
You can follow the steps above to make a test in your environment to see if this is what you want.

  • ICal quits unexpectedly after 10.4.3 update

Updated to OS 10.4.3 and now my iCal won't stay open. It stays open for a couple of minutes and then I get the dreaded "quit unexpectedly" message.
This happened earlier in the year after an earlier software update and strangely I was able to resolve it by putting the system to sleep and then waking it up again. Odd.
    Ideas?

Yes,,, how did you solve the problem specifically from all the suggestions you got?
I got a whole new powermac and used the migration assistant, but that didnt bring the information over for some reason (regarding iCal atleast, and some small unimportant pref files).
I tried faking a 'subscribe' situation, a drag and drop, emailing the ics file, manually inputting them into the new machine's folder and so on but no go. And I dont have a .mac account to try pushing them over...

  • Duplicate Outlook Calendar Items after upgrade to os5

    Hi,
I upgraded to os 5 the other day on my Iphone 4. I have an MSN email account with an MSN calendar. I have a lot of daily calendar items which are like reminders. I usually delete that days recurring reminder each day or 2 to keep a clean calendar. After I upgraded I switched to the Cloud. After that sync, I have duplicate calendar items for EVERY item on my calendar back years ago. This includes both  onetime items and recurring (daily ,weekly, yearly) items.
I found an old post that said to turn off sync calendar and deletethe items off the phone then turn back on. Well, I went into setting>mail>cloud and turned off calendar sync and waited 10 minutes. It deleted the duplicates but kept all the rest. I then went and turned calendar syncback on and all the duplicates showed up again.
Any ideas on how to get rid of the duplicates?

    I found the answer.
    1. plug the phone in to your computer or wall plug or this does not work!
    2. Go to settings>Icloud> and turn off calander sync. Then delete all items. Now your iphone calendar should be blank.
    3. Now got to Icloud.com and log in using apple ID.
    4. Look at your calendar. On the left edit your calendars and remove all of them. Now your cloud calendar should be blank.
    5. Now go back to your Iphone cloud setting and turn calandar sync on. After awhile your Iphone calander should match your Outlook calnder and your Icloud calander should too.

If I change the colour of the On My Mac Calendars, right click on calendar, select Get Info, I can identify those entries, all single.
Do the same on the iCloud Calendars, and the second and third entries on the day (Month View) change colour.
So, the iCloud entries on the iMac are duplicated...
iCal on my iPhone is OK, only a single entry...
Where do I go from here...
I suspect the first thing I should do is back up On My Mac Calendars.

Backup the On My Mac calendars (in iCal, File>Export>iCal Archive) and then delete them from iCal
