DVD Problems on Mac Mini Server

I am installing a Mac Mini Server box and have two problems with the External MacAir DVD drive.
1. It won't boot the install DVD - Yes I held down the 'C' key through the boot sequence.
2. I have changed all disk insertion events (in System Preferences - CDs & DVDs) to ignore but if I insert a blank DVD (to do an unattended backup), it spits it out again if I am not logged in. If I am logged in, the DVD stays put but I need to have the console logged out.

  • FileMaker Server problem on Mac Mini Server - Mac Mini won't boot

I just installed a brand new Mac Mini Server today, and also FileMaker Server 11. A first-timer for both Mac OS X Server and FileMaker Server, I made an error as explained below, and right now I don't know how to get back on track with the system. It won't boot.
    So, how did this happen?
At first everything was proceeding according to plan. I configured the pre-installed Mac OS X Server on the Mac Mini with users, groups and services. This was tested from clients and this seemed to work just fine. Then I installed and configured FileMaker Server. This was also tested from a client, and the example database that came with FMS was served up just fine.
The problem arose when I tried to install my existing FileMaker databases. I simply checked to see where in the file system the example database was located, and then copied my old databases to that location (I think it was Library > FileMaker Server > Data > Databases or something close to it - can't check it now...). I had the FileMaker Server Admin Console running, and hit the Refresh button hoping that this would make FileMaker Server find the databases.
This was my first error. I should have read ahead in the instructions to see that one is supposed to use an Upload Database assistant instead...
What happened when I hit refresh was that the FileMaker Server Admin Console became completely unresponsive with a spinning ball as cursor. I left it for about an hour hoping it would terminate, but gave up and tried to shut it down. It wouldn't close, so I force quit it from the Finder. Then I tried to shut down FileMaker Server, but I needed to force quit this as well. After this I thought it would be best to reboot the Mac Mini, so I shut it down, but now it won't even boot, it just stays on the screen with the spinning wheel for ever!
I have tried all the keyboard options while booting, but nothing seems to help. In safe mode, the grey progress bar just grows to about one third, then disappears and leaves the eternally spinning wheel.
The server version of the Mac Mini doesn't have an optical drive, only two internal hard drives. I tried to reinstall from scratch using the optical drive on another Mac on the network. The startup disk appeared when I tried to boot the Mac Mini holding down the option key, and after about 20 minutes or so of the spinning wheel I could actually access the discs. I started by running Disk Utility to check disk permissions. There were a lot of repairs concerning permissions and groups, especially on "Library". It said "ACL differs on Library", I don't know what this is but this was repaired. I then ran Repair Disk. The volume appeared to be OK.
When I tried to reinstall Mac OS X Server however, this failed with the message
"You can't upgrade this version of Mac OS X because a newer version is installed. Mac OS X Server couldn't be installed on this disk." I don't know how this can be, but I may have run software update earlier today.
What should I try next? Should I erase the primary HD and try to install again? Or should I install the system software on the secondary HD? Or should I just try to reboot as is in the hope that the disk permission repairs did the trick...?
Any helpful pointers would be greatly appreciated!

Hello there, I came across your post when browsing the forum for passive advice. I am in the same boat as you and am a first timer for both of these tools. I work for a company who now needs to expand its network and database capabilities. I have been assigned this task and these are the tools i have opted for. I have not yet purchased them and i am pleased to find someone who has my desired setup. Could you please advise on the simplicity of the setup and whether an advanced knowledge is required.
I want to use it in a mixed operating system environment. Is this possible?
    Regards
    Matthew

  • Mac Mini Server not seeming to connect with local computers

Anyone have a problem with Mac Mini Server? I had a Mac Mini Server set up with my network but I am only able to sporadically access files on the server from a local computer via Spotlight search.

    Might try this...
In Finder's Menu, select Go menu>Go to Folder, and go to "/volumes". (no quotes)
Volumes is where an alias to your hard drive ("/" at boot) is placed at startup, and where all the "mount points" for auxiliary drives are created for you to access them. This folder is normally hidden from view.
Drives with an extra 1 on the end have a side-effect of mounting a drive with the same name as the system already think exists. Try trashing the duplicates with a 1 or 2 if there are no real files in them, and reboot.

  • Mac mini server + SANLink adapter Thunderbolt  to Fibre ..long Delay to connect to fiber xsan

We replace the old Xseve with new Mac mini server (10.8.2 ) with PROMISE SANLink adapter " Thunderbolt  to Fibre Channel)
we have 2 mac pro machines ( 10.7.5) with Apple fiber channel card in both machine (firmware 1.3 ) and 2 active storage (12x2TB ) , Qlogic 1400 fibe switch 8 Ports
our xsan system was runing with xserve as MDC from long time
Now we replace the xserve with new mac mini + SANLink adapter  and recreate the new XSAN Volume again as clean installation and mounted it on the server and on both machines
But unfortunately we found many problems
1- Mac mini server with PROMISE SANLink adapter takes about 20 Min to detect the fiber connection with LUNs we got LUNs not found message on xsan admin for about 20 Min , and then he found it and mounted on mac mini desktop
2-All mac pro ( 10.7.5 ) take about 20 min to detect the fiber channel ( get red and not connected for about 20 min after booting ) this happen only when I update the OSX from 10.6.8 to 10.7.5 ..!!!!
3-All client can not mount the xsan volume and computers did not authenticate .
4- I deleted the computers and can't add it again to computers list ..always can't authenticate
So what can it to to solve this problem  ???  , Is ther any firmware update for Apple fiber channel card for 10.7.5 , why
PROMISE SANLink adapter " Thunderbolt  to Fibre Channel)  takes 20 min to detect the fiber ???

Some of this is heavy opinion and some is experience.  First, 10.7 was a terrible OS for Xsan support.  Some of the issues you may be experiencing may be due to 10.7.  I for one, avoided it like the plague.
Next, the issues you are describing sound like they could be DNS related or possibly related to how you defined your zones and your ports (target vs initiator).  The place to look is your system log on these units.  You should be seeing SCSI initialization errors from the FC cards.  You may have loop arbitration issues or something else related to the way the FC ports are configured.
Any reason why 10.7.x was selected?

  • I am having keyboard problems when trying to boot up an OS (bootcamp on Mac Mini Server)

I recently tried using bootcamp on my new Mac Mini Server.
I uploaded a windows ISO Image perfectly the way it asked, Windows 7, I followed the correct steps, euqally divided one of the hard drives, and I was ready to actually set up the new Windows section of my computer. During this booting session, my dog came in the room with her ball and knocked the computer plug out of the socket. Now when I turn on the mac, the fan still works, the same Macintosh sound comes up, the screen turns that usual very bright gray, but it stays on that gray. After a minute or two, the screen turns black, with a blinking underline, as if it were confused to choose which operating system it has to boot.
My problem here is that I use a wireless keyboard (not by Apple) -- and I suppose that bluetooth syncronizes with the OS and not the computer system itself -- so my keyboard commands do not get recognized in order for me to navigate into Windows 7 or OS X Mountain Lion. I tried solving this problem by purchasing a brand-new USB keyboard (since Mac Mini Servers do not have the PS/2 entrance). I guess this new USB keyboard didn't work, I imagine, either because the USB slots on the machine are not recognized by the computer's internal system, only by the Operating Sysytems (which I hope isn't true), or that the mac had never used that USB Keyboard and wasn't going to be capable of using it until it had installed the necessary drivers, but without the OS running that would become impossible.
So my question is: Is there a way that I can connect a keyboard to the mac so I can continue installing my alternate Operating System? Is it maybe another problem all together?

It is starting to sound more like Bootcamp failed to install properly.
Have a look at > Boot Camp 5: Frequently asked questions
then perhaps > Failed bootcamp instlation - Google Search

  • Mac mini server install DVD - install on a different computer

I bought a Mac mini server (= a Mac mini with a Mac OS X Snow Leopard Server pre-installed) a while ago. I am planning to install Lion Server on the same Mac Mini and get rid of the Snow Leopard installation DVD. My question is, can the DVD that came with the Mac mini be used to install the server OS on a different computer (another Mac mini or iMac etc.)? or is it somehow tied to the original Mac mini?
    Thanks!

Install discs included with a Mac are only able to install on the same model Mac. However historically Mac OS X Server install discs are not limited in the same way. (Remember there is no such thing as a Lion install disc.)
The server install disc is more typically limited in being an older version of Mac OS X e.g. 10.6.3 and thus not able to boot and install on the latest model Macs. It is however possible to boot and install on an older Mac e.g. an older Mac mini but install on to an external hard disk which might even be the internal hard disk of another Mac connected via FireWire Target Disk Mode. You can then run the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Server Combo update to update it to the latest Snow Leopard Server version which will then boot successfully on all the current Macs including those that have only ever shipped with Lion.
Since a DVD disk takes very little space I would suggest you don't throw it away.

  • Mac Mini Server mid 2010 problems

I have a Mac Mini server mid 2010 model, running Mountain Lion server.
It reported a fault with the HDD in the lower drive bay some months ago, so I changed the disk. It still reports a fault with a new disk and the original disk works perfectly in a portable enclosure, so it cannot be a disk problem but something more serious.
I have now discovered that bank 1 ram slot has failed. I have two 2GB ram modules, and whichever way I insert them bank 1 claims to have no ram.
Are these two problems related, and what is the fix. I'm just hoping there is something simple and that I don't need to replace the logic board.

Run Apple Hardware Test to try and pin down where issue is.
However, it does sound like it is a logic board issue.  These
days, since pretty much all the ICs on the board are BGA
(ball grid array), even the best electronics hobbyist can't
    replace them.
I just did a quick Google of logic boards for 2010 Mini and
they are pretty pricey ($500-$600 range).  If you have Applecare,
    however, you should be covered.
At that price for logic boards, you may be better off looking for
someone selling a 2010 Mini and just replace yours.

  • Mac Mini Server RAID 1 Disc Problem

I tried configuring my new Mac Mini Server (with the help of my MacBook Pro's superdrive) in RAID 1 as outlined in previous discussions by:
Step 1: Start the Mini in Target Mode. Press the T during start. In a few seconds the firewire logo will appear on your screen.
Step 2: Go to your second Mac. Connect the firewire cable between second Mac and Mini.
Step 3: On the second Mac start the disc utility. The two identical drives on your mini will show. Create a new Raid set (mirrored = Raid 1). Include both drives. Confirm the warning that all data on the mini will be lost.
Step 4: Make sure your second Mac has CD/ DVD sharing option installed. This is to use the superdrive to install OS X Server on the mini.
    Step 5: Shutdown both Macs
Step 6: Start your second Mac in target mode. Make sure the firewire cable is still connected.
Step 7: Start the Mini with the option key pressed.
Step 8: Insert the OS X Server install disc in your second Mac.
Step 9: wait till the drive logo apears om the Mini. Continue the install. Will take about an hour.
But when I get to Step 9 the mini's drive logo does not appear. I tried reformatting the mini's drives again in Disc Utility but still the same outcome. What did I do wrong? How can I fix it?
    Thanks!!

Never mind, was able to do the install with the Remote Install Mac OS X utility.

Later, with administrator user, I can not login the server application, I put the user name and password but it refuses it (user name and passowrd are correct)
In the end I also can not login the computer.
I reinstalled the Lion Server 2 times but nothing change, after 2 days it doesn't work like before.

  • Problem migrating to new Mac mini Server from Time Machine Backup

I sell my old Mac mini Server and after I purchase the new one (unibody). I had the Time Machine Backup but I'm not able to restore it to the new mac mini. I started it with the Server Install DVD into it and I went to Utility menu to choose "*Restore from Time Machine backup*" but it said that *it was not possible to restore the backup to this machine because its a different hardware, and suggested to use Migration*. So I restarted it and when it asked me to choose between "setting up a new server" or "transfer information from an existing server" I chose this last. In the next menu didn't appear any Time Machine backups so I mounted the time machine backup and copied the Latest hd backup to an external firewire hd and I connected it to the new one. In the migration menu list appeared my backup but there was a *yellow triangle icon* over it and the message "*Migration is not supported from servers which are configured to use dynamic network addresses. Configure the source system to have a manual network address and try again*". But how can I config a static address into my backup if I can't restore it into a machine? I don't have anymore the old mac mini to restore the backup and make any change in the configuration!
Any one can please help or give me suggestions?
    Many thanks

    I solved it!
I changed the network settings by editing /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist
So I successfully restored my SL server installation, but now I have an issue with Ethernet and SD reader. See this post if you are interested:

  • I'm unable to connect to my mac mini server remotely since the upgrade to OSX 10.8.5. I was able to connect without problem (from an Ipad and a Mac Pro workstation)before the upgrade which I applied last week.

I installed an update to OSX 10.8.5 last week. I've been unable to use Remote Desktop VNC from my Mac Pro working station or use Mocha Vnc Lite from my Ipad to gain access to my mac mini server since I applied the update. Any help would be appreciated!

    Hi David,
thank you. I tried all the steps and the thing different is that now with my usual user the CC app crashes silently, but Photoshop and Illustrator generate a crash report with this message:
    /Applications/Adobe Photoshop CC/Adobe Photoshop CC.app/Contents/MacOS/../Frameworks/amtlib.framework/Versions/A/amtlib
    abort() called
    terminate called throwing an exception
With the Adobe user it runs with no problems, I even tried to do a "diff" of running user processes between the two users and remove all launchers and extensions but it's still the same.
I am a developer so I use XCode and other "dotfiles" and dirs within my home directory, I'm also using Ruby/RVM, NodeJS and some other. Can some of this stuff cause conflicts?
    Thank you
    Vito

  • Mac mini server problems

okay I purchased a mac mini server MC408LL/A Serial YM943035B9X off ebay
which is probably my first problem.
It says its new and its in the box and all. I turn it on, it needed a wired keyboard and mouse. well I've borrowed them. So then it cycles me through installation. Asked for a product serial number, so I input the osx 10.6 server unlimited client that is the only product code in the package. I put it in, it restarted and then put me to a screen that says mac osx server v10.6 and asks me for a name and password. I don't know what to do from this point at all. I never set an admin name and password. It asked me for my name and my company name and that isn't working for a name and password. help

well, for a few mins I got confused on the raid set. I now see that I was seeing things wrong, or it was wrong and then was fixed by disk utility perhaps. it seems that disk utility helped a lot more in this situation than I've ever seen on older macs.
so, i did achieve a very very slow network boot. but the air drive seems to work well. too bad I'll only use it once in my life. i rarely use cds. the one issue that I have right now, after doing the wipe and reinstall, was the fear that I did something wrong to the raids. and fear of setting up the server aspect wrong. it looks like 200 different drives or folders on the network, and I have to keep my keychain handy. I don't think i could have done this without the macbookpro, especially for emergency advice in the forums. Thank you forum gawds
But JJ, you probably know more than me on the subject. I wasn't able to migrate. It kept giving me grief about accounts having the same name. So everything I'm doing by hand, except my acrobat won't work without the box serial. I certainly don't know where that is, and I use my acrobat every day. So now its all about updates for me. Hope your set up went well Hope you had a wired keyboard in the place where all unused equipment lives.

  • Mac Mini Server Mid 2011 i7 problems

I have a Mac Mini Server with an i7 Mid 2011 that had a lot of issues with memory because we were running so many services with 4GB of memory and would have 4 pages of usage in activity monitor after the 4GB of memory was full. It wouldn't restart on us or crash when running just really slow down due to usage of RAM. We just bought new RAM to bring it up to 8GB (2 x 4GB). It's the right memory for the computer. And now Lion crashes and restarts on us and even becomes way unresponsive too. Is there a way to check RAM to make sure it isn't bad without install a program. I recall someone once saying you could hold some buttons down at start up to do a RAM check.

I think verbose mode runs a simple check,
Starting up in single-user or verbose mode
    1. Shut down your Mac if it is on.
    2. Press the power button to start the computer.
    3. Immediately press and hold the Command (Apple) key and
    one
    of the following:
    the "s" key for single-user mode.  (Command-S)
the "v" key for verbose mode.  (Command-V)

  • MAC Mini Server Startup Problems

    Help!
MAC newbee. Just bought a new MAC Mini Server, got monitor connections in place; have wireless keyboard and trackpad; at startup I get the white screen with apple background then followed by a screen with a graphic with some rounded-corners rectangle; it just sits there with the rotating gear, rotating forever.
SUpports says I need a wired, USB, keyboard to get it started. Makes no sense to me. Help anyone? I am about to return the product--with disgust.

Below is my the answer to a previous helper. Yes, you need to start with USB before setting your devices to work with bluetooth. Thank you jut the same. Best, Larry
    ----------------my response-----------
Thanks. You are right. I bought a cheap USB keyboard and mouse and have been doing fine ever since. All's well and working.
There is a rather subdued mention of the need for an initial USB connection in the documentation, however, you'd think that sales--that department is a bit on the weak side--would have said something to me while putting my order together for bluetooth devices only.
Oh well....have been doing fine ever since...all set up. Again, sincere thanks.
