"DVD quality" rentals really DVD quality?

During the "Stevenote" yesterday, Mr. Jobs indicated movie rentals would be DVD quality. Of course, some titles will be in HD, but for this question I am not concerned about that.
For those of you who have been able to rent movies, in your opinion are the movies true DVD quality? Or did he leave out the "near" prefix?
I bought a couple movies quite a while ago on iTunes, but there were noticeable artifacts, so I haven't purchased any since.

Well, I'll be. You are exactly right John. I just saw the Macworld article:
http://www.macworld.com/article/131580/2008/01/itunesmovierentals.html
The article quotes Apple VP Greg Joswiak (the obvious love child of Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak) as saying the standard definition movies downloaded on the AppleTV are actually better than those downloaded onto computers (DVD quality versus near-DVD quality).

  • Really poor image quality when watching DVDs

    Hi,
I was just wondering whether anybody else has experienced really poor image quality whilst watching DVDs on their MacBook? For me, the image is really grainy or blurry. I am pretty sure it cannot be the DVDs as this problem is happening with every film I watch!
Is this a common problem? What can be done (if anything) to resolve this?
    Many thanks,
    John

    Hi John,
open system preference>display, and check if your color depth is in millions color.
try other dvd player like VLC for mac:

    Good Luck.

  • When I burn a dvd, it's really bad quality in black & white

When I burn a dvd, it's really bad quality in black & white.

What program are you using to burn the DVD? What is the original DVD content (another DVD disk or movie files -- what's their format?)?

  • DVD quality is really poor.

I am new in FCPX. I finished my project and export it as DVD. I also export it as H.264 and even Uncompress then Burn it as DVD. In all cases the quality of DVD is really poor. what should I do for better quality?

Are you editing in Proxy mode by any chance?
If you are, then unless you change to "Optimised or Original" in the dropdown menu at the top right of the Viewer, then Proxy quality is what will be exported.

  • Really poor quality final DVD output

    Hi there,
I am about to pull my hair out because I am so frustrated.  I hope someone can help.
    The goal:
-Trying to make a DVD of family videos using premiere elements.  Basically I'm just taking the long videos we shot, editing them down to a reasonable time, then putting them in chronological order w/ a simple title.  Very simple stuff.
    The problem:
-I have successfully made a DVD of our 2010 family videos, but the quality is HORRIBLE when played back on the DVD player.
    Important background information:
-We have a mac (Mac OS X 10.6.8; processor 3.06 Ghz Intel Core i3; memory 4GB)
-I have adobe premiere elements 10
-The videos were shot from a Sony DVD 850 standard definition camera.  Originally (as in 3 years ago), I wanted to use iMovie to make a DVD.  Found out that because the video camera had muxed format and everything was interlaced, that the mac did not like it.  Basically just upon import or when importing to imovie, there was video footage with no audio.  After hours of phone support w/ apple, I was instructed to convert the files to a different format (I did this 3 years ago, at this point I have no idea what or how I did this other than I used an application I had to download).  This was successful and I was able to upload to imovie, but I hated doing this conversion process as it took too long.  Also the quality of the video wasn't so great (probably b/c of all of the conversion going on).
-So I purchased premiere elements and organizer to hopefully skip that need for conversion.
-At some point in the last 3 years I uploaded the files to premiere elements organizer (whatever format they were in at that point - I believe I was dumb enough to convert the originals but not sure, the mac is such a mess right now I have no idea what files are original vs not)
-Last week started making the DVD in premiere elements.
-Have tried burning AVCHD 1080i 30 - then burning to Dolby DVD (this seems to be the best quality)
-Have tried burning NTSC DV Standard - then burning to Dolby DVD
-Have tried burning AVCHD 1080i 30 - then burning to widescreen
-Have tried burning NTSC DV Standard - then burning to widescreen
    The Problem:
-the quality of the video is very very poor.  I can see "lines" running horizontally across the picture that kind of bounce around, esp. bouncing when there is any sound.  It is so bad it looks worse than my parents old VHS tapes.
-The menus are hard to read (only readable w/ the Dolby DVD format when burning) and then the titles for each segment of movie are very very blurry.
-I've tried to render - it is taking forever (like 2 days) and stops a lot.  Not sure what is going on there?
    What I need:
    -any suggestions
    -what am I doing wrong?
-how to I find the original files if they even exist?
-what should I do at this point to try to get the best quality?
(We bought a new camera 1.5 years ago - a Canon that is HD and will work much better w/ the software - but I still need to save these 2 years worth of videos!

    Tarheelmommy,
    Welcome to the forum.
Unfortunately, you have posted to the Premiere Elements Tips & Tricks sub-forum, which is basically a repository for articles on how to do things in Premiere. Few ever even drop by. I will Move your post out to the main Premiere Elements Forum, where you will get quick assistance, and many more "eyes," than back here.
Thank for a compresensive post too, one with a lot of useful detail. There might be a few more questions that get asked, but we could use your post as an example of how to ask a question.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Can't get table to display correctly

Revising a site built with tables. Home page uses nested tables and I know that's the problem but I can't seem to figure out why the one table shifts to the right. I bolded the section below where I think the problem is.
You can't see the problem in wysiwyg, you only see it after it's on the server. See www.speedzonenj.com

  • Help with getting high quality DVDs from AVCHD footage

    Hello,
I know enough about video editing with PE7 to be dangerous, and was hoping someone could help me out.
My question is regarding getting the highest quality standard DVD from AVCHD footage. I have a Sony HDR-SR12 camcorder recording in AVCHD. I am editing footage natively in AVCHD with PE7 on a quad core system. No problem with that. However, when I export to standard DVD the quality of the video goes down drastically. (Yes, I know burning to Blu-ray would give me higher quality, but I am giving this DVD to a friend who doesn't have Blu-ray).
So far I have tried starting my project in both HD 1080i 30 5.1 channel:
    General
    Editing mode: HDV 1080i
    Timebase: 29.97 fps
    Video Settings
    Frame size: 1440h 1080v (1.333)
    Frame rate: 29.97 frames/second
Pixel Aspect Ratio: HD Anamorphic 1080 (1.333)
    and Full HD 1080i 30 5.1 channel:
    General
    Editing mode: HD 1080i
    Timebase: 29.97 fps
    Video Settings
    Frame size: 1920h 1080v (1.000)
    Frame rate: 29.97 frames/second
Pixel Aspect Ratio: Square Pixels (1.0)
But I see no discernable difference in the quality of my output onto DVD.
This is where my knowledge is lacking...how can I get the best quality output from my AVCHD onto a standard DVD? Is there some format I can convert to first, and then burn to DVD? Also, I am willing to break the footage into a couple of DVDs to improve the quality, but I don't know how or what to do for that.
My footage looks REALLY great when viewing from the HDR-SR12 direct to HD TV with HDMI cable, but not very good on the DVD. My footage is of a ballet recital, and I lose definition in the faces, costumes, etc on the DVD output.
    Any help is appreciated! Thanks!
    Gina

    Hey Gina,
This may be a year late, but as I have been pulling my hair out trying to solve this problem for the last 48 hours I finally did find somewhat of a work around, but it requires Adobe PP CS4.2.
    There is a plug-in here:
    http://www.mainconcept.com/site/prosumer-products-4/mpeg-pro-hd-7850/features-7861.html
Which will actually output your edit as an AVCHD file. You can then burn this straight to an AVCHD using Nero 9 and keep the highquality level of your clips and not need Blu-Ray. The DVD player will need to be AVCHD capable, but I just bought one of those for $40 as compared to the $200+ of most Blu-Ray players.
    Hope that helps.
    Regards,
    DSW

  • Best quality HDV to DVD using Premier Pro CC to Media Encoder CC and Encore

I have been struggeling to create a decent looking DVD from my HD video.  I am a newbe.  And I have read many, many forum posts trying to learn the best practice and have come out even more confused.  Many posts are back in 2009 and I don't think they apply.  Some recommend dynamic link which does not appear to be an option for me.  So I am hoping to get a clear answer to my problems.  I am including alot of info because I don't know what is really important.
I have 2 types of video that I am merging into my sequences.
    Sony:
    Format                                   : AVC
    Bit rate                                 : 11.5 Mbps
Maximum bit rate                         : 16.0 Mbps
    Width                                    : 1 440 pixels
    Height                                   : 1 080 pixels
    Display aspect ratio                     : 16:9
    Frame rate                               : 29.970 fps
    Scan type                                : Interlaced
Scan order                               : Top Field First
    JVC:
    Format                                   : AVC
    Bit rate                                 : 16.3 Mbps
Maximum bit rate                         : 17.0 Mbps
    Width                                    : 1 920 pixels
    Height                                   : 1 080 pixels
    Display aspect ratio                     : 16:9
    Frame rate                               : 29.970 fps
    Scan type                                : Interlaced
Scan order                               : Top Field First
I set my sequence in Premier Pro CC to
    AVC-Intra 50 1080i
    29.97 fps
    1440 x 1080
    HD Anamorphic 1080 (1.3333)
    30fps Drop-Frame Timecode
Hopefully I set up my sequence correctly???
Dynamic Link is not available to me, so I export the sequence.  This is where i get confused.
I export to MPEG2-DVD.  Preset NTSC DV Wide
Some forum posts say to tweek the video setting for better quality, this is what I have read:
    quality to 100
    minimum bit rate  4
    target bitrate 6
    maximum bitrate 7
    click maximum render quality
Since my source has upper field order but PP defaults to lower field order, should I switch to upper?
    I encode in Media Encoder.
In Encore, I have my dvd settings:
    MPEG-2
    720x480
    29.97 fps
Lower fields first  (should this be upper??)
I have an i5 processor, 8G ram, I am using Mecury GPU accelerator.
I listed a lot of stuff and I appologize.  I just think the quallity I am getting isn't there.  With these setting and what I am doing, is this as good as the quality gets?
    Help

    Use a 1920 x 1080, 30i sequence for the editing, not 1440 x 1080.
Start with the MPEG2-DVD option and the NTSC DV Widescreen preset.  Change the Quality to 100.  Change the Field Order from Lower to Upper.  Change the Min, Target and Max bitrates to 5, 7 and 9 respectively.  If you have hardware acceleration turned on, export away.  If you're running in Software Only mode, check the Maximum Render Quality box and then export.
Bring the resulting video and audio files into Encore for authoring.

  • Why is the resolution of my DVD poor quality?

    Hello All,
I am creating a DVD with several menus. The menus have images accompanied by large bodies of text. I made all my menus in Photoshop as 1280x720. I've set up all my menus, and they look great in the preview, but when I author it to a DVD I can barely read any of my text, and the images look like they are a really poor resolution.
Is there a way to get better quality?
    I'm using a basic DVD-R 16x 4.7GB
    Please Help!

  • DVD quality lower than expected

I’m trialling Premiere Elements 11 with a view to purchasing it to allow my Dad to easily edit video from his new camcorder.  The importing and editing work great.  (We are importing .m2ts in full HD from a Panasonic camcorder.)
However when we come to burn the DVD the quality is very poor, pretty much looks like a VHS!
We have got better quality by burning the same footage to DVD using the Panasonic own software (but it is difficult for my dad to use).
    I have checked:
    Project settings are correct (1920x1080)
We have rendered it with the preview render button before burning
We’re in the UK so selecting PAL-widescreen output on the DVD burning stage
We were only testing it with 10 mins footage, so no problem with length reducing quality
Would love to be able to fix this as the Premiere Elements 11 would be great for my dad in all other respects!  Any ideas? Thanks!

I have the same software and a Panasonic camcorder.
To get high picture quality you have to stop making DVDs.
The very best quality will come from setting the camcorder to 1080p50.  The files will be big.  Both HDWriter (that comes with Panasonic camcorders) and PrE11 can use that level.  It is also the best setting for action sports.
You did not say what you are using for a DVD player or what sort of TV or other viewing device you want to use.
If you want to play it in high definition you need to get it to a high definition screen some way without degrading it in a DVD player.  Get a Blu-Ray Player, a media player like a WD TV Live or plug your computer into your HD TV with an HDMI cord.
With a Blu-Ray player you can have both of your editors make a thing called an AVCHD disk.  It looks like a DVD, uses DVD disks, but it is not a DVD.  It makes a 1080i version of your footage on an ordinary, cheap DVD in and ordinary DVD burner.  The disk will play on most Blu-Ray players as it is part of the Sony/Panasonic AVCHD standard.  Because you can only put about 4 GB on a DVD, your videos are limited to no more than 20 or 30 minutes.  If you want more, move up to a Blu-Ray burner and use the more expensive disks.  Most current BD players have a USB port.  Panasonics have a SD card reader.  Use either editor and make high definition "computer" files and get them on a memory stick or SD card and they should play.  I have a Sony BD player that will even play high def video files directly off of a DVD, but only if the DVD was used as a data disk.  The idea is that you copy your video to the DVD like you were backing up data files.  The Sony BD player recognizes it as a playable file and sends it to the TV.
The WD TV Live media player is a small box that costs about $90 in the US.  It is famous for being really good at playing every video file format, has a remote and a menu system.  It will play anything you make with either editor.
The last way is to connect your laptop to your TV or monitor with an HDMI cable. I have a cheap 15 footer.  Anything I play on my laptop is duplicated on my 55 inch TV.
There is one other alternative is to use the Panasonic camcorder as media player.  You have to use HDWriter to move files to your computer for this.  One of it's odd benefits is being able to move file, include edited ones, BACK to the camcorder so you can us it as a HD media player.
This stuff is confusing and it took me six months to figure it out after I bought my Panasonic camcorder.  If I can help further, please ask.

  • Inferior quality when viewing a built DVD in on a computer

I've seen a few postings with similar problems but have yet to find any good solutions. I'm creating a DVD and many of my client's clients will be viewing it on computers instead of NTSC monitors.
No matter how high I set the encoding bitrate in DVDSP (they say to never go above 8Mpbs - and that's pushing it), the menu screens and text in particular look really crappy when viewed on a computer. I've tried having the text be part of the background instead of a separate graphic, as well as using the text feature in DVDSP. I've run NTSC color filters in Photoshop and the font I'm using is thick and sans serif; but no matter what I do, once the DVD project is built and viewed via the Apple DVD Player (or any player on the computer) it just looks too compressed and not good. I've saved my menu graphics from Photoshop in a variety of formats (ended up using TIFFs), and tried a variety of text colors.
Unchecking "Deinterlace" in the Apple DVD Player makes it look a little better when viewing, but there's no way to automatically force a users computer to change this default setting, so no real help there.
Even further, if I export one of the files as an m2v in a separate app like QuickTime or Compressor and view it in QuickTime, it doesn't look nearly as bad as after DVDSP builds the project and does its encoding. I've tried 2 pass VBR, 1 pass, etc. Pretty much every possible setting/preference.
There has to be some way to improve the quality of still menus and text so that it looks decent on a computer monitor as well as on a TV when building a project with DVDSP.
Does anyone have any tips or suggestions?
    Thanks!

Thanks for following up Chris - I apologize for any lack of detail in my posting.
Yes, I am mostly talking about quality concerns with menus though this is not specified in the title of the post. I understand that there is always loss in general quality when compressing as mpeg2, but to be more specific than before, text quality in the menus looks too artifacted around the edges. My client has described it as being "not sharp" and/or blurry.
I have used the proper resolution for the stills in Photoshop, and have experimented with using both 720x480 and 720x534. The problem is not with highlights, as the selected/activated states are separate elements from the text itself (rectangles that appear below the text).
In terms of viewing, I'm aware that scaling up to full screen will degrade the quality. It certainly looks better when viewed at normal size but it would still be nice to be able to control the compression on the still menus so that everything didn't appear as artifacted.
The eye is more forgiving when watching video because of the movement, but on the still menus the loss of quality is much more apparent.
Perhaps (as suggested) encoding the m2vs in Compressor first and then bringing them into DVDSP would yield better results than having the built-in encoder do the job (though my understanding was that it is essentially the same encoder).
My reference to viewing the m2vs in QuickTime was simply to point out the difference in apparent quality when viewing the m2v before DVDSP builds the project - when looking at the m2v in QuickTime the quality appears much better than when you view the DVD project in the Apple DVD Player after the project is built (even though DVDSP is using the same m2v). My concern/question with that issue is just to wonder if DVDSP does some kind of extra compression/encoding on an m2v when it builds the project, and if this can be controlled.
Thanks again for your comments and suggestions.

  • Quality of dvd on a computer monitor

Is there any way to use idvd to author a dvd that will look good played on a computer monitor? All other projects I have done look pretty good on the TV but when I put my disk into computer to play with the dvd player it looks really bad.Can anyone explain why? The reason I ask is because I am videotaping a wedding for some friends, will be editing in FC express, then authoring dvd in idvd. This couple does not own a TV (they watch movies on a wide screen computer monitor) and want to watch the wedding video the same way. Any suggestions?
    macpro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   2.66 ghz dual-core Intel, 2gb ram

You can use iDVD6 to create a DVD from FCE but eventually you will need to compress into mpeg 2. (unfortunately all compression involves some loss of quality).

  • Bad DVD quality. Camera or Settings?

    Hello.
I've recently finished a DVD for my high school's drama department. I'll fess up right away and say my camera (a Sony HDR-HC3 HDV minidv... 5 years old) isn't the best to film in extremely low light conditions. It doesn't look ungodly on my computer however (im sure the macbook pro's glossy screen helps this).
When put onto a DVD and played back onto the 46 in HD TV, it looks pretty bad.. i guess its passible for a high school show DVD, but im hoping to get into more professional settings (school for video production), and this would be mocked and i'd never have a job again.
The project, was quite long (about 136 minutes) so when i was finished editing within FCP (and color correcting the footage to reduce graininess with an external monitor) I rendered, then exported as a reference file. Imported to Compressor, applied the 150 DVD Best. I upped the bitrate to around 5mbps (just enough to fit the video onto a 4.7 gb DVD) and set the deinterlace filter to Best.
So camera quality, bad/dark lighting, inconsistent lighting vs. DVD compressor settings?
I would like to lean towards the camera/environment. I'm saving for the Canon XA10 AVCHD HD Pro Camcorder which has great low light picture quality.. im hoping this will help the quality of my DVD's.
    Any insight?
    Thanks!

    That was harsh..
Okay, there's obviously things I could have done differently. I wasn't really aware of being able to rent equipment (for cheap) in my area. I've seen stuff advertised online for lower end professional cameras but those still run around more than a $100.00 per day, and my budget isn't what I would consider to be flexible. Also, I was literally asked by the director to film the show the day of the performance. There wasn't much room for obtaining better equipment, BUT I will keep that in mind for the next time.
The tapes, okay I was idiotic. But I think its best to know you did that was stupid in order to never do it again.
As far as the video that was shot, i'm not sure how I could have made it look better given my lighting conditions. I used what manual controls I had, and it made the scenes with the lighting scheme I was adjusted to look good, but it had issues adjust to rest. My biggest problem was artifacts and graininess in the black areas. Im not saying there isn't much i have to learn about getting the shot, but i feel like the camera was limiting in its low light capabilities. Of course, I should have rented something better.
As far as the editing portion of it goes, that is my strongest point and the area I want to focus on in college. I filmed the show on 2 nights and combined footage/audio bits from both nights. This included cross dissolve shots between near and far shots (from 2 different nights) and matching them so they appear to have been from the same show. This also involved mixing the audio in a way that one couldn't tell when the "transition" from audio night 1 and audio night 2 took place. During the orchestra bits there were parts where they messed up on one night, and played it perfectly the next night, so I combined orchestra audio and had them fade into eachother. The end product makes it seems like the orchestra played perfectly. So in some ways i don't lack the creative ability to work with what i have.
I burned a couple more test copies and it looks fine on a standard def TV, and the sound is the best i've ever had. It doesn't look the way i would love it too on the 46 inch, but its better than previous theatre projects since i went through and color corrected all the clips.
Like i said, its a learning experience.. sometimes being harsh is what gets one to learn.

  • Poor image quality when played from dvd just burned

I exported a FCP file from FCP using Compressor using several variations: uncompressed, compressed MPEG2 etc... brought the file into DVDSP and burned it to a DVD. when i play it from the dvd on my computer monitor it has these terrible lines and there are dropped frames occassionally. It doesnt look that way when I play it directly from DVDSP or from FCP only from the dvd. What is the problem here and how do I get a dvd whose quality matches the original?

All video brought into DVDSP for authoring is converted to the same format for DVDs, MPEG2.
Your "terrible lines" are probably interlacing artifacts. Look up interlacing in the manual. they always look worse on a computer monitor since that's a progressive display.
Stuttering can be caused by tons of oddball glitches, no way ot even start guessing from where I'm sitting.
but the whole process of going form FCP to DVDSP successfully is clearly and exhaustively explained in about 100 pages of the manuals and, yes, it really can be that complicated.
