DW CC - Fluid grid & media query questions

Hi.
I'm delving into the fluid grid section in DW CC as I'd like to target most screen sizes. Just a couple of questions:
1) Is it possible to create a template (designed for mobile, tablet, desktop) and reuse it for other projects?  If so, are there any tuts out there that provides guidance?
2) Important - Whilst I'm creating the layouts in fluid grid & using mobile queries, I'm having a hard time targeting the css for a particular screen size.
For example, In both mobile & tablet I'll float an image to the left, but float right in desktop. So under @Media I'll select desktop (min-width: 769px) and then float right said img. But when I check the other screen sizes, the float right has been used globally. I usually have to manually input the css myself to make it work. Am I missing something?
Thanks.

Frustrated: Nancy O. said: "Sure.  After you're done creating the basic layout and everything works as it should, go to File >  SaveAs Template.dwt. Thoroughly read the F1 Help articles on DW Templates.  They can be a bit tricky for first-time users. "
Fine. I've been using templates for over ten years through all the iterations andincarnations of DW since before MX. Now with CC and FGlayout, after I get everything working and I "SaveAs Template, all the editablility of the template goes away and even the Template Editable regions do not work. What am I doing wrong?
Also I tried creating the FGlayout in a blank template, which logically should work, but the same things happen.  It's almost as if it were engineered that way on purpose.  LOL What gives?

  • Fluid grid Media Queries

    Hi, how are you all this weekend?
    I am getting more comfortable with the DW CC Fluid Grid Layout. I really like it! I just am a bit confused with the media queries. It, by default has two. One set for min-width 481px and one set for 769px. That seems fine to me. I noticed though, when you come down to the icons of smartphone, tablet, and desktop. I click smartphone first and notice that it is set to smart phone 480px, so it will not display min-width 481px and when I click the 481px media query to begin work, I naturally will click the smart phone icon again and it displays 480, not showing me my completed work because it is not reaching the min-width of 481. Same thing occurs with the 768px.
    Should I change the media queries to 480px and 769px? Or should I change the icon sizes to match the media queries. Just a bit off that it is one pixel larger than the default icons.
    Thanks.

    FGL is a mobile first framework. Everything that you place in the general section of the stylesheet will apply to all screen sizes ranging from mobile through to large screens.
    If you want to change the look of the page in larger than mobile phone screens, you start using media queries. In FGL, the first larger screen size takes effect at a minimum width of 481px (tablets), the next takes effect at a minimum width of 769px (desktops). This is exactly what the icons depict, hence no adjustment is required.

  • Responsive Design media query question

    Hello all, please forgive the elementary question. If I have the following css, are both of the images loaded on the smaller device or only the background image for the appropriate media query?
    @media only screen and (min-width: 960px) {
        bk-head {
         background-image: background-image: url(../images/BIGGER-IMAGE.png);
    @media only screen and (min-width: 768px) and (max-width: 959px) {
        bk-head {
         background-image: background-image: url(../images/SMALLER-IMAGE.png);

    They're all loaded.  The ones that get displayed depend on the user's viewport width.

  • Media query does not work on my iPad (Was: media query question)

    I am coding a site for mobile/tablet/desktop and while my desktop and iphone respond to the CSS, my ipad does not. The changes I make to the tablet in dreamweaver take, but when they go live the ipad does not respond. Obviously my media query must be incorrect but I cannot figure out the issue. Any help is much appreciated.

    Thank you.

    Yes.  That's inevitable because smart phones are getting bigger while tablets are getting smaller & bigger.  There is always going to be some crossover.   Think of it this way, when a tablet behaves like a mobile device, it takes on the mobile layout.  When tablet behaves more like a desktop, it takes the desktop layout.
    Similarly, a wide smartphone in landscape mode is apt to look like your tablet layout.
    See FluidGrid Example below:
    http://alt-web.com/FluidGrid/Fluid2.html
    Desktop = 4-col layout
    Tablet = 2-col layout
    Mobile = 1-col layout
    For illustration purposes, I added a thick gold border to the Tablet layout only.
    /* Tablet Layout: 481px to 768px. Inherits styles from: Mobile Layout. */
    @media only screen and (min-width: 481px) and (max-width:768px) {
    .gridContainer {width: 92%; border: 16px solid gold}

  • Default screen sizes for fuid grid & media query

    Is there a way to change the default sizes in the fluid grid dialog for new pages. I would like to start with a 320px mobile size not 480. (since there are hardly any devices that are 480 as far as I can tell. Changing the tablet size would also be useful.

    If you're talking about the preview screens in DW, click on the values and select or edit new ones.  See screenshots.

  • Media query issues in fluid grid layout (take a look at this code)

    how to make adjustments in specific device views without screwing everything up in other views. I know in the css designer when I click global it makes changes to all views which is great. But when I click one of the little icons at the button of the screen (like the smartphone icon or tabet etc) the changes I make in the view dont stay in that view but affect all views. So I'm coming to understand ( maybe wrongly) that those icon have no design power other than to show you what thing look like in that view. I'm starting to focus on clicking the stlye sheet dreamweaver cc created (not the boilerplate one) clicking the media query for the screen size I want to adjust and finding the selector I want to tweek (ITS RIGHT HERE THE HICKUP I'M HAVING IS AT - i CANT ADJUST  IMAGES THAT I HAVE SPECIFICALLY IN THE CORRESPONDING VIEW WITHOUT SCREWING EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE UP IN THE OTHER VIEWS) Can anybody invision what I'm trying to do and what happening and give me a fix????
    Idealy I would like to simply click the view icon of the screen size I want to tweak and drag handle bars to resize images and the adjustment stay only in that sceen size range, but this is not happening. This why I say that those (may wrongly I might be doing something wrong) icons have no design power other than to give you a view of things. But either way whether I can click icons and rag handle handle bars or in I have to use css designer I cant specifically work in one view without affecting all the others.
    Below is css code for media queries that are in my style sheet. It might not be the cleanest bit I want you to focus on two main aspsects of the code
         1) The media queries, particularly the smartphone 480 and below. ( but all media queries if need be)
         2) In the header and in the list iteams I have images. Its these images that I'm trying to resize - but only specific changes in specific views
    Take a look:

    By default, image height and width are 100% in FluidGrid Layouts.  You'll find it near the top of your CSS code.
    @charset "utf-8";
    img, object, embed, video {
    max-width: 100%;
    .ie6 img {
    width:100%;
    That's so they can re-scale to fit the various layouts.  If you need to assign explicit height & width values to certain elements, you can override that CSS rule by using the height & width attributes in your HTML code like this.
    <img src="some_image.jpg" height="xxx"  width="xxx">
    Or, you can give your image a class name and target that class with CSS Media Queries.  For an example, copy & paste this code into a new, blank document.  SaveAs test.hml and preview in browsers at different screen widths.
    <!doctype html>
    <html>
    <head>
    <meta charset="utf-8">
    <title>Untitled Document</title>
    <style>
    /**FLUID GRID DEFAULT**/
    img, object, embed, video{
    max-width: 100%;
    .ie6 img {
    width:100%;
    /* Special Rules for mobiles */
    @media only screen and (max-width: 480px) {
    .nav {width:320px; height:74px; }
    /* Special Rules for Tablets */
    @media only screen and (min-width: 482px) and (max-width: 1024px) {
    .nav {width: 480px; height: 148px;}
    /* Special Rules for Desktops */
    @media only screen and (min-width: 1025px) and (max-width: 1230px) {
    .nav {width: 1000px; height: 225px;}
    </style>
    </head>
    <body>
    <h3>This image naturally rescales to layout</h3>
    <img src="http://placehold.it/1000x225" alt="some description">
    <h3>This image has a .nav class &amp; rescales to set media query break points.</h3>
    <img class="nav" src="http://placehold.it/1000x225" alt="some description">
    </body>

    Does this make sense now?

  • Fluid Grid Layout - Beginner's Questions

    First, let me explain once again that I can't reply to my own threads because the "Reply" function isn't working in my browsers for some reason. (Thanks for your tips on my other questions, Ben Pleysier and Nancy O.)
    Anyway, I want to modify my websites so they work in mobile devices, and I now have my first Fluid Grid Layout up and running. However, there are some bugs I need to work out.
    I experimented with two or three fluid grids and just realized that they're very different for some reason. I think I inserted the wrong elements or inserted them in the wrong location.
    Does the HTML code below look OK? I understand that everything is supposed to be inside div.gridContainer, which begs the question why are the last two divs (div.fluid and div#div1) OUTSIDE div.gridContainer? Are these extraneous divs that I can delete?
    Am I supposed to have a div#page and div data-role="header"?
    It looks like all my actual content - including the footer? - should go inside div data-role="content", right? And am I going to have to apply class="fluid Paragraph" to every paragraph in my database tables?
    Some of the confusion may be because some of these unfamiliar elements (e.g. "data-role") may be HTML5, which I'm also just learning about.
    If anyone could post a link to a web page(s) using Dreamweaver's Fluid Grid Layout, so I can examine the source code, it would be really helpful. Thanks!
    <body>
    <div class="gridContainer clearfix">
      <div data-role="page" id="page">
        <div data-role="header">
        <?php require_once($BaseINC."/$MyPHP/inc/D/Shared/Body/Header.php"); ?>
        </div>
        <div data-role="content">CONTENT </div>
        <!--This clearing element should immediately follow the #mainContent div in order to force the #container div to contain all child floats--><br class="clearfloat">
        <header class="fluid Header">This is the content for Layout Header Tag "Header"</header>
        <p class="fluid Paragraph">This is the content for Layout P Tag "Paragraph"</p>
        <footer class="fluid Footer"><?php require_once($BaseINC."/$MyPHP/inc/D/Shared/Footer.php"); ?></footer>
      </div>
    </div>
    <!--Are div.fluid/DivBase and div#div1 supposed to be here, outside div.gradContainer? Can I delete them, or do they serve some purpose other than relaying information for getting started?-->
    <div class="fluid DivBase">This is the content for Layout Div Tag "DivBase"</div>
    <div id="div1" class="fluid">Use Insert Panel for additional Fluid Grid Layout Elements. Note: All Fluid Layout tags must be contained within the "gridContainer" div tag.</div>
    <!--I included some files that will be absolutely positioned near the top here.-->
    </body>
    </html>

    #1  Success with FGLayouts comes from experience.  I built 9 test layouts before I got an acceptable one.  A few tips.  Build Mobile first because that is what everything else is based on.  Then build Tablet & finally Desktop.  Do not tamper with code in FluidGrid.css or Boilerplate.css files.  Use a separate, external style sheet for your content styles.
    #2  Depends on whether or not you want the divs to fall outside your #gridContainer.  For example, let's say you want a 100% width header & footer that stretches the entire width of your page in all devices.  In that scenario, you would have to move <header> and <footer> tags above and below gridContainer div.  Otherwise, everything else needs to be inside the gridContainer in order to respond to the media queries.
    #3  APDivs will not work right in FluidGrid Layouts -- or any RWD for that matter -- so don't even go there.

  • Fluid grid with added media queries not working with {display: none}

    Fluid grid layout using added media queries to fix break points will not use {display:none} properly. When I try to hide a div in moble view it hides the div in all views. I was able to hide the div using width: 0% which works in all browsers except for Safari.
    Here is the css

  • I'm designing my first website using Fluid Grid Layouts. CSS question

    I'm designing my first website using CS6 and Fluid Grid Layouts so I need a lot of help. I realize CS6 creates something called a boilerplate css file. However, in addition to that file, do I have to create an individual external style sheet for my desktop, ipad, and smart phone pages (3 separate style sheets) or should I have only one external style sheet for everything?
    Or this is there another recommended way to use Fluid Grid Layouts?

    FluidGrid Layouts creates a boilerplate.css file, a respond.js file & a Fluid.css file for you -- you name it whatever you like.  I like to call mine Fluid.css so I remember what it is.
    Fluid.css contains mobile first -- upon which all others are based.  Inside, CSS Media queries, you'll find code for tablet and later on desktop.  So one stylesheet generated by DW covers all 3.
    TIPS:
    FluidGrids are very temperamental.  Do not tamper with boilerplate.css or Fluid.css files.  Instead create a separate external style sheet for your typography & other custom content styles.
    Build mobile first, then tablet and finally desktop.
    Keep your designs simple and uncluttered.
    Don't worry about content until you get the layout perfected.
    Have fun with it .  You'll probably have to start over a few times before you get what you want.

  • Building fluid grid site - what's the best way to add a page?

    I've got  a one page fluid grid site going and I think I've learned enough to start adding pages. Do I use my primary css file as the file to be associated with subsequent pages? I tried to use a new css in a second page, and perhaps my mistake was that I used some classes and id's from the home page on the second page (which is to be expected as it inherits some of the design). For whatever reason, that led to the second page 'breaking' in a couple of places and I couldn't find the problem.
    So I deleted it!
    I'd like to begin again and start adding pages. In the creation stage, right after page definition, where it asks about css and copying over the two files (boilerplate and the js script), should I just use my existing css? When I copied over the two files, I was able to delete them and repoint the new page to the moved files (in a scripts folder and css folder).
    OR
    Should I create the page along with new css and just NOT use the same-named classes and id's?
    Last question, when bringing up code navigator on a design page, are the css pages listed in alphabetical order or by cascade? The new page seemed to have them in alpha order rather than cascade order. They were listed in alpha, despite the fact that they were defined in the page in order of cascade.
    Thanks all.

    Hi Toskey,
    My feelings about the Fluid Grid feature in Dreamweaver is far more
    negative than David's. First, let's look at the response.js script that
    simulates responsive behavior in old browsers. It can be destabilizing
    in IE8 and under (causing lockups) and is, in my opinion, a waste of
    time. Each month that goes by, IE8 and under become less and less
    relevant and giving them a traditional fixed-width or mini-width look is
    all one needs to do.
    The grid approach itself, at the core of the system, is flawed and, at
    best, a transitional approach as CSS has added a columns module. In
    about 2 years time, the concept of grids will be native to most browsers
    and how you deal with older browsers will become a matter of progressive
    enhancement. That is, allow older browsers to display a conventional
    type of layout while newer browsers use the newer features.
    Responsive design depends on designers being able to react and change as
    the CSS brainiacs of the world have regularly scheduled eureka moments
    about better ways to deploy media queries. So Adobe would need to be
    ready and willing (and able) to issue updates to the Fluid Grid system
    on a need-to-update basis. This will never happen.
    As for flexibility and practicality, and real-world application, get a
    Tablet, Smartphone, and desktop computer cranked up. Now load Adobe's
    home page and tell me how it reacts/responds:
    1. Smartphone portrait mode
    2. Smartphone landscape mode
    3. Tablet portrait mode
    4. Tablet landscape mode
    5. In a desktop browser as you make window narrow and wide
    Now load up the PVII home page (www.projectseven.com) and perform the
    same tests in the same devices. How much importance you place on certain
    things will dictate to you what kind of approach to take.
    We think our approach is currently the most bulletproof in the world and
    if something comes to our attention 2 weeks from now that indicates
    there is an even better way, or if another device takes the world by
    storm and needs a new query, we will issue an update ASAP.
    Good luck and happy hunting.

  • Fluid grid for Wordpress: insert PHP code into DW or DW code into Wordpress?

    This may be a stupid question but it's a dilemma for me. Here's the problem. I want to create a mobile first, fluid grid Wordpress website in Dreamweaver CS6 based on an existing Wordpress theme. I can see two ways of doing that:
    1) Create a fluid grid layout in DW, then insert the Wordpress PHP code into the right places in DW
    Pro: the fluid grid layout is set up by DW and therefore can be easily edited with DW (I imagine)
    Con: It is beyond my coding skills to make a fully functional WP template
    2) Take an existing responsive Wordpress template with media queries and edit that in Dreamweaver
    Pro: I start with a fully functional WP template and only have to make changes (mostly in CSS) to customise it
    Con: When I start with an existing template (like Skeleton) I run into trouble using DW
    For example: I click a navigation button to get at the CSS but it's not clear to me from DW's interface in which media query I have to make changes. I did a tutorial on creating a fluid grid layout with DW so I can do that. But DW doesn't work the same way with an existing WP template like Skeleton. I searched the web but all I can find is help on creating a fluid layout with DW, not editing an existing one.
    By the way, I am experienced with HTML/CSS but not PHP and I have a local Wordpress server running on my Mac so I can work in Dreamweaver's Live View.
    The problem may be that I am only just starting with responsive web design and need some more experience with media queries, css rules and DW CS6. Could anyone comment on this problem or point me towards more information on the subject?
    TIA!

    You can certainly use DW to customize a 3rd party WP Theme.  However, you must be throughly familliar with how WordPress Themes work and have a good working knowledge of  HTML, CSS and PHP code.  Design View will not be much help to you.
    WP Themes are a sum of their various parts:  header.php, footer,php, sidebar.php, page.php, index.php, archive.php, etc...  The web server parses code from the various parts and creates whole pages on the fly.  Once WP is deployed on your server, you cannot use DW to edit content.  You must use the WP Admin Panel (CMS) to manage content, Themes, plugins and backup data.
    For simple static sites, the FluidGrid Layout feature in DW is a nice starting point.  But these layouts have definite  limitations which, IMO would not be a good fit with WordPress.

  • How do I get my Fluid Grid Layout page to resizes from portrait to landscape for iPhones?

    Starting in portrait on my iPhone 4, the fluid grid layout page does not resize when I turn to landscape.  After I refresh / resize to fit the page on landscape and then turn the iPhone to portrait, the page resizes just fine.  Everything seems to be working just fine on the desktop, ignoring IE.  Could it be my media query tags?
    If anyone knows a solution, it would be much appreciated.  Thanks.
    Here is my test page: http://www.bedroomandmore.com/1_b_fluidGrid.html

  • How can I convert my web page from a fixed width layout to a fluid grid layout?

    I'm taking a web design class (I'm using Dreamweaver CS6, btw)  wherein the professor started us out building our websites in a fixed width layout but now I want to change my site into a fluid grid layout. My "site" so far is just one long page, and I've already designed it with fluid grid adjustments in mind (most things are centered  in the layout) so it shouldn't need excessive tweaking.
    Is there a way to duplicate the site folder that holds my first page, re-open a new document in fluid, then copy the code in and tweak the width parameters for the different layouts?
    Did I just answer my own question? Help - I am new at this!!
    Thanks all,
    KC

    A bit off-topic, but Osgood: have you ever used SASS or LESS? When you are building your own grid systems it can save you a tremendous amount of time, and it's a lot of fun.
    Take the following simple example - it generates all the 23 css classes automatically for a 12 grid system. And simply changing one variable allows you to create and calculate any number of columns!
    //variables
    $desktop: 1025px;
    $large-columns: 12;
    @media only screen and (min-width: $desktop) {
         //regular grid span classes
        @for $i from 1 through $large-columns {
            .span-large-#{$i} {
                width: percentage($i/$large-columns);
         // push classes
        @for $i from 1 through (($large-columns)-1) {
            .push-large-#{$i} {
                margin-left: percentage($i/$large-columns);
    No, not explored it yet, and may never....I don't know. I don't really make much money out of web design. It's becoming more and more difficult to find the desire to learn new techniques when the opportunities aren't really there to put them into practice on as regular basis as I would like.  I've got  a very good handle on css, php, html, jQuery - I'm not sure I want to add another layer at the moment, given I'm never quite sure how long I will continue to 'bang my head against the wall' . I'm getting to the stage where I keep asking myself do I really need the problems associated with learning new stuff to the point of being comfortable with it if the financial rewards at the end don't equate to the efforts of learning it.
    I don't really enjoy web development if truth is known. I come from a Graphic Design background which I much prefer but somehow got side tracked and pushed in this direction and there's no way back now, lol. Whilst I concede Web Development is much more exciting its also 100 times more complex/difficult and the skills needed are considerably more.
    Your example looks interesting and I should think I could pick it up reasonably easily given I work with php which uses variables on a similar basis.

  • More insight on divs with fluid grids please!

    Help me come further up the CS6 fluid grid learning curve, please!
    I'm adapting an exiting site to fluid grids. After creating the template for the primary pages, I have two major issues at this point(yeah, only two, SO FAR).
    1- I have a vertically expanding menu in the first layout div. For tablets, I want to preserve the left grid column space for the menu, regardless of its length, and all other content would use just the right gid columns. But when the menu happens to be short, the "excess" content floats left under the menu grid columns. How can I force main page content to only occupy the right grid columns, regardless of the length of the menu?
    As a side point to the menu, what happens when I try to put this (or the footer) all back in an SSI, as it originally was?
    2 - I've seen the note about no support for nested layout divs. Thru trial and error, I'm still trying to figure out just what this means. Pragmatically, what is the greater implication of this?  Can format be controlled only on fluid grid layout divs? Can't I have divs inside of a grid layout div to control image palcement around the text for instance? I've had hit=n-miss experience with this so far.
    Can anybody point me to a more in-depth discussion on this topic?
    Sorry if this ol' dog seems like he's learning div layout all over again. But hey! That IS how it feels!
    Thanks for any education, or pointers to such, that you can provide.

    Not sure I completely understand what you want. But in this example, I have set nav and LayoutDivs 5, 6, 7 to display:none  in smaller devices.
    http://alt-web.com/FluidGrid/Fluid2.html
    I did this inside a media query within my Content.css file:
    /* Special Rules for Mobiles. */
    @media only screen and (max-width: 480px) {
         /**hide some divs**/
         nav, #LayoutDiv5, #LayoutDiv6, #LayoutDiv7 { display: none }
         /**show jQuery buttons**/
         #togglenav { display: block }
         #showDivs { display: block }
    Then I used a simple jQuery toggle to show/hide divs.

  • Dreamweaver CC fluid grid controls disappearing and other info

    Hi All,
    I have finally completed my first commercial fluid grid design in Dreamweaver CC and it was a bit of a mission.
    One disconcerting thing about the program is that the fluid grid controls keep disappearing. You know, the ones where you can hide the div, duplicate it, move it up or down, or delete it.
    I have found that when this happens, I need to close the html file I am working on in DW CC and then open it again. The controls then appear again, so you can rearrange your various layouts as demonstrated in those breezy demo videos about DW CC fluid grid layouts.
    So don't just conclude you have broken the code when these controls disappear, try closing and opening the file again first.
    Also you need to insert all the divs you need for all layouts in the mobile phone layout, as that is the main layout, governing all the others because of the way the media queries are set up in the CSS file that is created when you start your fluid grid layout.
    I could not work out how to reorder divs in the different layouts, this may not be possible at the moment. Instead I created divs in the phone layout to cover all of the divs needed in the three layout sizes and switched them off and on in the various layouts. This works really well, but I found that DW behaved strangely if I switched a div off in the mobile layout and then tried to style it in one of the other layouts. So I suggest styling all of the divs first for all the layouts before switching any of them off in the mobile layout.
    Also you can't copy the contents of one div and put them in another without freaking the program out, especially if you are working in a div that is hidden in the mobile layout.
    I suggest saving regularly as you add new divs and style them and view live in a browser immediately, as the preview in DW CC is not reliable. It can't show rounded div corners or shadows for example.
    Keep an eye on the code as it is built by your use of the CSS Properties panel. If it starts going wrong, close the html file without saving it or the attached CSS file. Then go back in and try what you want to do again.
    If you save weird code errors, your work could be so compromised that you need to start all over again. So quit out without saving if you notice this.
    After much experimentation I now insert images into a div, rather than make them a background image, as the background image will not completely show if the content of the div is not long enough. This may require a rethink of your design.
    Doing any absolute sizes in a div will make the responsive design very hard to style and possibly break the code, so I don't suggest it.
    Adding padding to a div can make it stick out of right edge of the design, I am not sure why this is the case and could not work out how to stop it. So use low pixel numbers in the padding of a div.
    Also control z seems to be a sudden death move, so I stopped doing that.
    So my first job has been a bit of a ride, but I seem to be nearly there on my first design.
    I think DW CC is still a work in progress and I look forward to further updates of the software.

    Hi Top Ten,
    You can't get them back once they go. You now need to edit the css code manually to do the same thing.
    For instance if you want divs to sit beside each other you put this in the css for that div:
    clear: none;
    This css means that div will allow other divs to sit beside it.
    Then put in a width in percentages. For example if you have three divs that need to sit beside each other put:
    width: 33%;
    in each of them. Or maybe:
    width: 31%;
    margin-right: 2%;
    Fortunately in DWCC it is now robust enough for you to do those code changes by hand. My original question in this thread was posed when DW CC fluid grid had just come out and crashed easily. A year later all is well, so you can do those changes in the css code without problems now.
    Regards,
    Mary
